Death Aftermath
The Arcane Kid ruffled and aligned a thick sheaf of lambskin pages, each one
smothered with scribbled notes and comments, and tossed them onto the desk. He
exhaled and shrank into the thick upholstery of his high-backed chair. His narrow
face was twisted into a pout; his luminous eyes were dimmed.
From across the wide desk, Havoc took a few gulps of dark ale and belched. When
Arcane remained quiet, he cocked his head and frowned.
"Whatta ya so upset about?" Havoc roughly demanded. "Those two fighters were on
borrowed time; we both knew it."
The Kid shook his head and grunted. Havoc grinned over the edge of his tankard
and took another swallow. He smacked his lips while he dropped it onto the desk; some
of the contents slopped out. The Kid looked up from his musing and watched droplets
of amber liquid dribble with erratic, steadfast purpose down through the grooves of
the engraving carved into the flagon's side.
"Star Streak was too fragile to last, I concede that," murmured Arcane.
"However, I had hoped that Eclipse would last long enough to retire to Xochithlan and
open that petting zoo that he was always talking about."
"Yeah, yeah," muttered Havoc as he looked out the window of their office. The
afternoon sun cast a narrow beam of hot light through the lower corner of one of the
primitive glass panes. "Well Kid, he was a nice guy, sure, but he wanted to be a
gladiator. His choice."
"Yes, but he wasn't that bright, even as giants go... and his nature was so
peaceful." The Kid shook his head. "Remember his first day, Havoc? He begged us to
let him train as a Total Parry. Big as he was, he didn't really want to strike
out..."
"Yeah, sure," growled Havoc. "I told ya we shoulda made him a Basher."
Arcane shrugged and took a deep sigh. "No, I think he just would have died
sooner."
"C'mon," said Havoc, rising smoothly. "Let's check out the new recruits. They
shoulda arrived at the barracks by now."
With an easy, fluid stride, Havoc stepped toward the door. He paused, his
calloused hand on the latch, and looked back over his broad shoulder. "Aw, c'mon, Kid!
Don't let it eat ya up like that!"
"It's not so easy when they've managed to hang around this long," replied Arcane.
He waved a slender hand at the stack of paperwork on the desk. "Add to that the fact
that we've nobody capable of pulling off a successful bloodfeud!"
Havoc released the latch and turned to face the Kid squarely. "So whatta ya
sayin'? We're just gonna roll over for these bums?!"
"No! We'll bloodfeud with rookies if we must!" Arcane pulled himself to his
feet. Havoc noted that the Kid's usual gracefulness seemed a bit strained. "It serves
much the same purpose as the Dark Arena, and meanwhile our other fighters are gaining
experience and skills."
"Ya don't seem too confident 'bout that strategy, Kid. Also, throwin' away men
just to keep a grudge goin'?" Havoc shook his blocky head; the afternoon light
glistened off the scattered silver tips of his fresh, bristle-top haircut. "That just
don't seem like yer style."
Arcane stepped to the window, crossed his arms, and peered out over the training
yard. "I don't believe Clara D'Anduza killed on purpose. Eclipse couldn't manage to
pass the first stage toward mastering the Parry tactic-"
"Yeah, right!" Havoc bellowed. "That guy didn't have prospects for gettin' even
an 'Expert'!"
"Yes," nodded Arcane. "I know that. My point is, it was probably an accident.
I've seen her fights; she's armored up heavily and she doesn't seem very
accomplished."
"Well, against an over-sized doofus like Eclipse... Why'd ya let him challenge
her, anyway?"
"Never mind," muttered Arcane with a narrow look. "The point is, I don't believe
it was purposeful." He shook his head. "Still, we have to bloodfeud."
"We'll lose, of course," Havoc pointed out.
"C'est la vie," replied Arcane. "It'll buy us time while our other fighters
learn more skills."
"Yeah, but I got high hopes for 'em," frowned Havoc. "I don't wanna throw 'em
away too!"
"Unwind yourself, will you?"
"Hey, I gotta walk through this town, okay? I saw Master Darque after the
fights, and he gave me a little nod." Havoc glared out the window. "I don't know what
that meant, but I don't much like that cold, 'holier than thou' look."
"You continually surprise me," The Kid chuckled softly. "What about that other
manager? The one for Wicked Martyrs?"
"What about him?" Havoc scratched the top of his grizzled head. "Come to think of
it, I don't even know his name."
"Me either," admitted Arcane, "but it doesn't matter. I've decided I don't like
him much right now."
"Yeah, I'll bet he's losin' sleep over that!" Havoc snickered. "Just ensure that
you submit the bloodfeud paperwork CORRECTLY this time."
Arcane twisted his narrow lips in concentration. "I doubt if we'll have much to
work with, but let's go see what sort of scum and villainy the Commission has tossed
into our laps."
"Ha!" Havoc pivoted and opened the door in one free-flowing movement. He called
over his shoulder as he stepped out onto the rough hewn porch. "So it's okay to throw
out the new talent, is that it? No tears? No sad goodbyes?"
The Kid materialized at Havoc's side; one second he was standing in front of the
window, inside the office, the next he was standing on the porch. Havoc felt a slight
wind push against him from Arcane's wake. He also felt the gooseflesh rise at the
back of his neck. "This is a house of gladiators, after all," muttered Arcane. His
eyes were glowing brightly again. "We don't wander from door to door to sell cookies;
we step out onto the sands; we sell our skills and our steel." Havoc grunted and
nodded. "And we honor our dead," Arcane continued, "but we don't dwell on them."
"What's that gotta do with throwin' the new guys into the grinder?"
"Hey, they're the ones that signed up for this, right? They wanted to be
gladiators..." The Arcane Kid glided off the porch and moved towards the barracks
with a purposeful air.
Havoc shook his head; a sardonic smile flitted briefly across his face before he
followed the Kid.
SPY REPORT
Greetings to everyone in Shadowspire! Welcome to the original no-tourney arena
in the land, and after 275 turns, she is still going strong. I gave Huard the week
off so that he could catch a breather before the... oh, who am I kidding, I gave Huard
the week off so that I can have a week off! I get twice the work done when he is not
here being a distraction. Let's get right into the turn's action because I still have
a few things to check off my to-do list while that nitwit is out of my ever-receding
hair!
Jet-Boot Jack was still on the throne when they closed the arena doors last
cycle. He has had an impressive career here in Shadowspire with lots of wins and few
losses. This turn he defends the championship against Plug-In Car. My favorite thing
about JBJ is he doesn't sit idly on the throne, but issues those challenges to the
whippersnappers below him! It was a 4 minute bout, but JBJ comes out as the victor
once again. With that win and yet another throne, JBJ caught the eye of enough people
to be invited to the Isle of the Eye. Also, with 3 turns on the throne and an
impressive win/loss record, Jack will be inducted in the Shadowspire Hall of Fame.
Congrats to JBJ who is managed by Hombre.
The most avoided team for the turn is Cult of Bacchus. They were avoided most by
Kill Em All. Plug-In Car, who lost the Title fight was the most challenged warrior.
There were a few other fights of note this turn. Quick (4-1-1) of Big Lake Solution
challenged the much more experienced Choke (11-13-0) of Kill Em All. Usually when I
write about these types of challenges, it is a eulogy for the inexperienced
challenger. However, Quick overcame Choke in a 2 minute fight. There was one other
head-scratcher bout between Search the Sky and Darque Ages. This particular fight was
a blood feud. Those types of fights will typically produce some lopsided challenges,
yet in another bizarro turn of events, we have the blood feud challenge coming from
103 points below in the rankings. Aqua Malleo (1-3-0) tried to feud veteran Clara
D'Anduza (17-6-1). This one actually went to form as Clara overcame Aqua Malleo.
All deaths came via the Dark Arena, so there is little to discuss in that
department. I will note that Den has completely avenged his awful turn from 272 by
successfully feuding 3 separate teams over the course of 4 turns. Big Lake Solution
remains the top team in the land after a 4-1-0 turn. The Commodores and Pray the Gods
each move up one spot to 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Wicked Martyrs jumps from 7th to
4th, while Kill Em All has the largest gain for the turn at 6 spots to close out the
top 5. The biggest loss for the turn goes to Shanghaied who fell from 2nd to 6th.
The Mothership 011 landed last turn, but apparently took off again as Floyd's team is
the only one missing for turn 276.
Before I close, I also want to congratulate Horrid of Wicked Martyrs for
receiving his graduation notice as well. Horrid and JBJ will fight their last in
Shadowspire next turn. Kudos to both of you! Who is going to step into the throne?
