TEAM SPOTLIGHT
It's Always Something
The Arcane Kid leaned back in his well-padded desk chair. Small stacks of paper
shivered into unruly piles; a few smaller pieces of parchment floated off the desk.
Grimacing, The Kid rolled his eerily glowing eyes and frowned up into Havoc's stern
face.
"What do you mean, 'it's missing!'?"
"Kid, that porcelain pig ya use for stashing our spare coin--"
"Okay, okay..." Arcane placed a slim hand atop one of the piles of paper that had
managed to stay intact. "I get it. The pig is missing. So what? Somebody's probably
cleaning it. Is that any reason to throw open my door and interrupt me while I'm
trying to get some work done here?!"
"Yeah, well, Aqua Malleo's gone. Don't know where. And so's one of the new
guys."
Arcane froze; his eyes cast an unearthly light that easily matched the flickering
lamps hanging overhead.
"Aqua's too smart to steal from me," Arcane murmured to himself.
"He wouldn't dare -- would he?"
The Kid looked up; for a few moments he studied the oil lamps that were suspended
over his desk. With a startled expression, he began rustling through the piles of
paper on his desk.
"Whatta ya lookin' for, Kid?"
"Oh great! That's just wonderful!" The Kid crumpled up a scrap of parchment
that he had pulled out from one of the stacks. He threw it across the cramped office,
completely missing the small barrel that was used as a waste receptacle. Before the
crushed paper ball had bounced twice on the floor Arcane had risen with a smooth,
quick motion. He came around the desk; Havoc hopped to the side to let him by. The
Kid's soft chamois doublet, embossed with brass buttons and glittery gemstones, left a
fluttering trace of cinnamon and musk in his wake as he glided out the door.
Havoc sniffed, smirked, and shook his head, then sprinted after The Kid.
Arcane called over his shoulder as he headed for the barracks.
"Which 'new guy' was it?"
"I dunno his name... the dreamy-eyed one."
"Our Striker?"
"Our slow, weak Striker, yeah," Havoc acknowledged.
Arcane threw open the barracks door and entered the main hall without breaking
stride; Havoc was close on his heels. He stopped a meter inside; he stood facing a
small, empty curio cabinet of glass and mirrors.
"It's really gone," muttered The Kid. "I don't believe it. When I find him--"
"Not likely," growled Havoc. "Ya gotta know he's long gone by now, right?"
Arcane gave a curt nod while frowning at the empty cabinet. "Yes he is, and no
he's not."
"Whatta ya mean?"
"I had seen some paperwork Aqua had submitted earlier this week. He wanted a
small 'payday' loan. I thought it odd, but went ahead and authorized it... Now I know
why he needed the money."
"Yeah, but he's gonna need a lot more than that! All the money in yer little
piggy bank isn't enough for a D.A. bribe, right?"
The Arcane Kid glowered at the empty cabinet.
"That pig is somewhat rare, Havoc. I picked it up at an estate sale several
years ago when I was running a team out of Osksi."
Havoc whistled. "That must have been a long time ago! That place is a ghost
town, now."
"Yes, I know. But that pig's value has only gone up. Right now it's worth more
silver coins than it can hold."
"No kiddin'? Wow. We've had it kickin' around here for years!"
"Yes," agreed The Kid. "I know. I thought it would be safe here."
"Ya got careless," Havoc pointed out. "But I still don't get it. Why take it?
Aqua's gotta know yer comin' after him, right? He can't get away."
"He's heading for the Dark Arena, Havoc. That pig, his loan, and the money
within it, is about enough for a decent bribe..."
The Kid crossed his arms and stared at the blank mirrored shelf that had once
held his ornamental pig. Havoc nodded to himself.
"Oh, I get it! He buys a fake death, right? That way he don't have to fight
Darque's Ripper, and he gets a fake ID and a ride outta town." Havoc chuckled to
himself. "Smart boy, that Aqua."
"Yes he is," nodded Arcane. "He managed to talk that new striker into going with
him. Good cover, if he still needs a body to leave behind to throw us off his scent."
"Huh, I wouldn't have thought he was that smart," Havoc growled.
"He's not," said Arcane with a smirk. "He didn't have any paperwork to turn in
with his bribe. Paperwork stamped with the team's seal, that is."
"Oh yeah," Havoc scratched the top of his bristly head. "But so what? Money is
money."
The Arcane Kid sighed and dropped his arms to his sides. He turned to leave, but
found Havoc standing in his way. His glowing eyes glared into Havoc's face. Havoc
suddenly found it prudent to step aside. The Kid moved ahead toward the door with
deliberate steps, purposely slowing down as he talked over his shoulder.
"Without that seal, the silly priests and special effects people will simply take
his money, assure him that everything is taken care of, and then let nature take its
course."
"That sounds harsh," Havoc replied, following The Kid. "They're gettin' paid,
after all."
"They get paid more if they do it my way," Arcane said with a dry chuckle. "I
automatically double the bribe if someone shows up for a 'special death' but doesn't
have the requisite form from either me or you. I thought you knew that."
"Uh, NOW I know that," Havoc affirmed. He sped up a little to keep up with The
Kid as he made his way back to the office.
"You're SUPPOSED to know that. It's in the manual I gave you," chided Arcane. "I
thought you wanted more responsibilities around here? You wanted full co-managerial
rights and privileges, right? Well, my expectation was that you would read the manual
carefully and learn something of the policies that affect this team."
"The people in hell want ice water, too," Havoc muttered to himself as The Arcane
Kid re-entered his office and slammed the door shut behind himself. Havoc shook his
head and looked up into the star-studded night sky.
"C'mon, Kid. It's only a pig, after all," he whispered.
SPY REPORT
Here we are on a sunny afternoon in Shadowspire! I want to welcome all of the
faithful duel fans that have made it out to the arena today. I particularly want to
thank you for taking the time to listen to this humble, but talented spy reporter,
Huard DePriest. Did I mention how humble I am? I try to work that into every
conversation and spy report. You can never be too humble, and I like to remind myself
to strive for such excellence by reminding you of how excellent I am. Enough about my
humility for the time being, let's get to the fights.
Jet-Boot Jack bids us farewell, so we had an open seat in the arena. It just
happened to be the best seat in the house, the Duelmaster's chair! Since JBJ was
inactive on his final turn in the arena, the championship match came down to two top
ranked Challenger Champions! In one corner, you have the arena's top ranked Aimed
Blow, Misfortune Cookie of Otto's Diner. In the other corner, you will find the top
ranked Parry Riposte, Clara D'Anduza. The bookies didn't care for this match up as
much as Misfortune Cookie did, but what do bookies know? Cookie beats Clara and takes
the Shadowspire title! Congrats to Misfortune Cookie, who is manager by Otto X.
The most avoided team for the turn was Cult of Bacchus. The wine-bibbers were
most avoided by Kill 'Em All. Perhaps these two teams could join forces with one
another. Excessive alcohol consumption can destroy the liver, and in effect kill 'em
all! Albeit, it is a slow process, but Mordant wasn't built in a day! Dragon Scarred
was the most challenged warrior for the turn, which is interesting because DS has a
pretty impressive W/L record. Targets for this award are typically struggling. Were
there an excessive number of Aimers around our top ranked Wall of Steel? Though
challenged from all sides, Dragon Scarred was able to get his own challenge through to
Plug-In Car. Dragon Scarred overcame Plug-In Car in 2 minutes.
Big Lake Solution loses the top spot after a 2-3 turn and slips to 2nd. Wicked
Martyrs simply trades places with Big Lake Solution and take over the number 1
position. Monster Manual had a monster leap in the rankings after they climbed a
turn-high 13 ranks to sit comfortably at 3rd. Shanghaied moved slightly up 2 spots to
4th, while Dragonbane Guild had an impressive turn with a 7 place gain into 5th. The
biggest drop among active teams happened to Search the Sky. They did send a few
warriors to the Dark Arena this round, so this drop isn't a big surprise to those
paying attention. There were a number of inactive teams including regulars such as
Hombre, Vlad, and Visionist. Hombre has indicated his team is on hiatus for the
foreseeable future, while Visionist announced to the masses at the local tavern that
he would be absent this turn. Vlad is... no one is sure or even looking for him.
There were minimal deaths this turn outside of the Dark Arena. Seven deaths
total in Shadowspire for turn 277, and 6 of those came by torchlight. The lone kill
on the regular arena sands belongs to Ferdowsi of Darque Ages. He challenged Orc of
Monster Manual, and let's just say it was a bloody affair. Only one of those warriors
emerged from the arena. I am keeping my ear close to the sands to discover if this
was merely a dueling mishap or if there is some bad blood between these squads.
Actually, I just want to ask people uncomfortable questions at inconvenient times so
the boss thinks I'm doing my due diligence. It is a game we like to play. I pretend
to work; he pretends to pay me.
It is time for me to get out of Shadowspire. I'm heading to Seam for a few weeks
to help out with spy reporting duties there. I wasn't asked to help, but it is
obvious they need me there! I mean where else are you going to find a spy reporter
this humble and talented? I might see you next time or the old man might take care of
it for me. We shall see! We will also see if Misfortune Cookie can hang on to the
throne. I'll see you next time in Shadowspire... maybe.
