TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Another Power Lunch
The Arcane Kid sat back in his high-backed chair and allowed his slim frame to
relax and sink into the thick leather padding. As his narrow head lolled against the
sweeping curve that cradled his skull, he held his arm up. Between his index finger
and thumb he dangled a small vial by its slender silver chain. The liquid inside the
vial gave off a green, effervescent radiance that was mirrored in The Kid's glowing
eyes.
The door to the small office opened with a sudden, silent jerk. Havoc slipped in
without a sound; a thick folder bulging with papers peered out from under his brawny
arm. He slammed the door closed with a hard shove and seated himself in one of the
two leather-padded chairs opposite Arcane.
The Kid took his eyes from the vial and frowned at Havoc. Ignoring Arcane's
stern gaze, Havoc tossed the heavy folder onto the desk between them and took a deep
breath.
"Something on your mind, Havoc?"
"Well, I wanna know how much longer ya wanna keep doin' these silly 'power'
meetin's."
"As long as it takes, of course. I wish to see an enormous improvement in our
rankings and our roster!"
Havoc chuckled. "And I wanna see a raise!" He made a rude gesture at the folder
laying on the desk. "Or at least a few sandwiches!"
Havoc shook his head in defeat, then he leaned forward and tapped the folder with
a thick, calloused finger. "I been runnin' those new guys through their paces. I
ain't impressed."
Arcane sighed and returned to studying the dangling vial. "The important thing
is to keep trying," muttered The Kid. "The only way to lose is to quit trying."
"Ya get that from the back of one of those fancy napkins at The Acropolis?"
In a dry voice, The Kid replied: "Unlike Otto's, The Acropolis doesn't feel the
need to write an advertisement or cute motto on every scrap of spare space it can
find."
Havoc grimaced and shrugged his broad shoulders, then settled back in his chair.
"Whatever. If ya don't want all that, that data stuff, then why'd ya make me get it?
I got better things to do than count how many pushups these idiots can do, right?"
"Getting a clear picture of their overall health and abilities is important,
Havoc. We can't begin to administer the correct supplements and enhancements without
that data. Without that information we'd just be shooting those boys up with serum and
wild hope."
"Uh huh," Havoc muttered to himself. "Like usual." He scratched the top of his
bristle-brush haircut. "I guess that makes sense."
Havoc tilted his broad head and studied The Kid as he, in turn, continued staring
at the dangling vial.
"Uh, Kid? Did ya get the word? We kinda lost our chance to bloodfeud Master
Darque's ripper."
"Did we?" Arcane's narrow face twisted into a wry smirk. "Clara D'Anduza is
dead, is she not?"
"Y..e..a..h..." muttered Havoc slowly. "But it means we can't bloodfeud, right?"
"Isn't it more important that justice was meted out?"
"Well--I guess." Havoc shook his blocky head. "I wish I coulda seen that fight!
It was over too fast! I was gettin' me one of those sausage plates that Bobbi and I
like and-"
"Please spare me the details," interjected The Kid.
"Yeah, okay." Havoc sighed. "Anyways, it was a big upset, and it happened on
the ripper's challenge, so-"
"Most fortuitous, don't you agree?"
The Kid's eyes glowed with an eerie radiance that seemed to reach across the
desk. Havoc frowned.
"Uh huh." He glanced at the dangling vial that twisted in the air a few dozen
centimeters from The Kid's nose. "I kinda hate to ask, but what's that?"
"This?" Arcane made an elaborate, slow shrug before slipping the vial into an
inner pocket of his gambeson. He met Havoc's suspicious expression with an innocent
mien.
"This is merely a sample of an experimental drug I came across in the
marketplace," The Kid said. "To be frank, it's nothing exceptional."
"Uh huh." Havoc leaned forward a little. "What does it do, Kid?"
"Nothing much," replied Arcane with a smug smile. "It temporarily, and mildly,
inhibits the central nervous system."
"Uh huh. Whatta ya mean?"
"I mean what I said. It causes a brief, feeble interruption of normal messages
from the brain through the spinal cord. Barely noticeable, really."
"Uh huh. Really... What does it DO?"
Arcane frowned and tapped a brief staccato on the desktop with his slender
fingers.
"I told you, Havoc. Nothing much. It causes a faint slowing of bio-electric
impulses from the brain to the body, that's all. The effect doesn't linger; it lasts
perhaps a minute or two. And it's not paralysis; it doesn't noticeably slow down
one's reflexes or reactions. In fact, it doesn't seem to have much of an effect, as
far as any observer would detect."
Havoc's eyes widened, then narrowed.
"Uh huh. But if a gladiator happened to have a little of this juice inside 'em
before a match..."
"Yes," nodded Arcane. "Although it would be difficult to appreciate the effect
from the stands, the results would be obvious to the fighters involved."
"Yeah," mused Havoc. "Fer example, maybe little things like parryin' or
ripostin' would be a little slow, I guess?"
"Exactly," sighed The Kid as he settled back into the luxurious padding again.
"Just a brief pause; just a slight hesitation."
"Uh huh. In a match at the Champion level or above, that's all it takes to lose
a match."
"Or worse," acknowledged Arcane in a barely audible voice.
"Yeah," Havoc grunted. "Or worse." He too leaned back and settled into his
chair, eyeing Arcane through narrow slits. "Whatta ya think Darque will do about it?"
"About what?" Arcane shrugged. "He has too many enemies to count; and let's not
forget about all the managers that have mysteriously chosen this time to take a brief
holiday."
"That's our excuse?"
"Easy there, Havoc. If you think about it, you'd realize that we don't need an
excuse. Anyway, Vlad and Den both make better suspects than us--and I'm not saying we
DID anything wrong, to begin with."
"C'mon, son! Don'tcha think that Darque's gonna wonder 'bout us?"
"Hey, isn't it a strange coincidence that D'Anduza gets killed on the same turn
that Blackhart got Powder Monkey to the DM's throne? He wasn't all that tough when he
fought Eclipse, remember?"
Havoc crossed his arms and grit his teeth. The Kid smiled at him. Havoc
gestured with his strong, scarred chin toward the folder lying on the desk between
them.
"Okay, Kid. We'll see how it plays out. Now, whatta ya wanna do 'bout these
bozos?"
Arcane closed his eyes; his nostrils flared as he inhaled deeply. "It is what it
is, Havoc. Throw them out there full-force and let's see what happens."
"What??" Havoc leaned forward again and slapped the thick folder with his beefy
palm. "Kid, ya didn't even read my reports!"
"I've done my own research and made my own observations," replied Arcane. He
eyes remained closed. "Don't worry about it. There's plenty more where they came
from. Run 'em hard!"
Havoc's lips twisted into a silent snarl. He rose and left, as quiet as a ghost.
Only the heavy THUD of the slamming door marked his departure.
Arcane, his eyes still closed, allowed a small smile to flit across his narrow
face.
SPY REPORT
Good afternoon, duel fans, it is your favorite spy reporter with you today!
Whoever shouted Debby Tonte is off of my Dead Tourney Card List! No, no, no! It is
not Debby Tonte, it is me -- Huard DePriest! I am here to give you another action-
packed and fun-filled spy report on all that is happening in Shadowspire, the jewel of
the No-Tourney Arenas! Now that all the introductory fluff is out of the way, let's
get down to brass tacks and other pointy things!
We are going to focus on the fights in this spy report. From the title fight to
a few of the stylemasters and the popular warriors from the turn, we are going to put
the spotlight on the famous (and infamous) warriors of Shadowspire. The best place to
start is going to be with our title fight.
Powder Monkey took the throne last turn and was surrounded by a relatively stout
selection of Challenger Champions. Whether by luck or through apathy from the
Duelmaster, Vidhi was able to post a challenge for the title. When the dust settled,
VIDHI slimly won victory over POWDER MONKEY in a 4 minute Challenge Title brawl.
Congrats to Vidhi for the victory and the title of Duelmaster. Vidhi, as part of the
Pray the Gods stable, is managed by Vlad.
The most avoided team for the turn was Kill Em All and they were most avoided by
Cult of Bacchus. The most challenged warrior was Martial Slaw from Otto's Diner.
Perhaps Martial should have allowed one of those challenges to make it through because
Martial was able to challenge Boalzebul of Monster Manual, and it did not turn out so
great for Martial Slaw. MARTIAL SLAW was overpowered by BOALZEBUL in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge melee. Maybe Boalzebul is more of a salad guy.
There were a few Dark Arena deaths this turn, and only 1 death upon the regular
sands. Sower Mood from Big Lake Solution challenged Chicken Hawk of Kill Em All.
Sower came into the fray with a 1-5-0 record and Chicken Hawk sat at 2-4-0, so it
wasn't exactly a match of arena powerhouses. However, someone has to win, and Sower
Mood did just that! And, with pizzazz! SOWER MOOD murdered CHICKEN HAWK in a 1
minute bloody one-sided Challenge brawl. It wasn't even close according to my
sources!
Janna continues to be the fan favorite in Shadowspire. She has been the talk of
the town for many cycles now and it does not appear that the fervor is going to die
down anytime soon. This turn the fan darling fought fellow arena veteran Sphinx.
Luckily for the fans, Janna was able to come out victorious. They are always so much
more agreeable when their favorites win! JANNA handily defeated SPHINX in a 1 minute
uneven bout. Also popular this turn was Cult of Bacchus' warrior Blythe. Blythe is a
former Duelmaster, so he is no stranger to the spotlight. He was challenged by Mellow
Jello from Otto's Diner. MELLOW JELLO unbelievably bested BLYTHE in a action packed 2
minute Challenge fight. Even though he lost, Blythe caught the crowd's heart. As for
Mellow Jello, well, the crowd didn't hate him, but their love for Blythe seems to keep
growing.
The biggest up challenge of the turn was a bloodfeud between Darque Ages and Cult
of Bacchus. Ferdowsi, who has an impressive kill count, but not an impressive
win/loss record tried to avenge his fallen teammate. On the receiving end of that
feud was Slaycia, who is sitting pretty as the arena's top chartered recognition
leader. FERDOWSI slimly lost to SLAYCIA in a 2 minute bloody Bloodfeud brawl. No one
was shocked by the outcome of this one. The biggest down challenge of the turn was
also a bloodfeud. Most people, myself included, do not count feuds as official down
challenges, but I'm doing this one by the numbers, so it is relevant for this turn.
From the Left's warrior, Fear Monger, challenged the lesser experienced Morwulf of
Bloodhammer Clan, a mere 41 points below. FEAR MONGER viciously subdued MORWULF in a
2 minute gory Bloodfeud match. Once again, no big news on the outcome of this fight.
Fear Monger was perhaps trying to return the favor of killing a warrior to Bloodhammer
Clan.
Well, that is it from me, duel fans! I will probably see you next turn too since
Phineas is traveling for the Tournament of the Dead. I have no idea when he is going
to be returning. This is both good and bad. Good because his cigar isn't filling the
newsroom with a wall of smoke. Bad because I have no idea when I'm going to be paid!
Oh well, I'm sure there is a place to sleep and some food around here somewhere.
I'll see you ladies and gents next turn!
