Ahhh, Shadowspire. Such rich history. Such gravitas! Much like
today, it was the dawn of a new year when Shadowspire finally opened
for gladiatorial business, on the 16th day of the Month of Blizzards.
I was not here for much of it, but looking back over the annals and
anals of history gives me a sense of vicarious pride, at least in the
former instance.
In the case of the former, we have a magnificent Clan Longbeard
striding in to the very first fights through the not-quite-finished
arena gates b good help is SO hard to find b onto the brand new sand
just to walk out again, undefeated, at 5-0. Others I recognize and
admire have also shown up for the inaugural. Inebriation managed a
3-2 while Darque Ages and Cult of Bacchus matched them stride for
stride. I see the Street Walkers slinking away with a 1-4 but we all
know them capable of much more. We miss you, Roadkill! Literate
Loons was also present on Opening Day as was the recently-returned
manager Hammer. Forty-four teams planted flags in the ground to honor
the city.
In the latter case, well, we have b well, more accurately had b Big

better than they got for an amazing 3-2 inaugural outing. Sadly, the
Outcasts, being managed by Dense, were not to maintain their winning
ways. Fast forward over ten yearsb&. TEN years! and we find Big Lake
Outcasts wallowing in second-from-last place at just above a 40% win /

THIS time, they would have a winning turn. Yes siree. But it never
happened, to the absolute shock of us all. This is my shocked face:

But even sadder than Densebs manhood was the day that he, in his
infinitesimal wisdom, decided to bury that rich Shadowspire history,
however sordid, and retire a founding team. A founding team! A piece
of Shadowspire history snuffed out forever like the cheap candles he
lights to impress the ungulates on date night.
bFor what?!b, cried the Furies. Some crappy new team amongst the

up a little of the autoformatting:]
Ahhh, Shadowspire. Such rich history. Such gravitas! Much like
today, it was the dawn of a new year when Shadowspire finally opened
for gladiatorial business, on the 16th day of the Month of Blizzards.
I was not there, but, looking back over both the annals and
anals of history gives me a sense of vicarious pride, at least in the
former instance.
In the case of the former, we have a magnificent Clan Longbeard
striding in to the very first fights through the not-quite-finished
arena gates -- good help is SO hard to find -- onto the brand new,
freshly-raked sand
just to walk out again, undefeated, at 5-0. Others I recognize and,
in some instances,
admire have also shown up for the inaugural.
Forty-four teams planted flags in the ground to honor
the city as the team names were etched onto the arena walls..
In the latter case, well, we have -- well, more accurately had -- Big
Lake Outcasts. As Proud Shadowspire's 19th registered team, they gave
better than they got for an amazing 3-2 inaugural outing. Sadly, the
Outcasts, being managed by Dense, were not to maintain their winning
ways. Fast forward over ten years --. TEN years! -- and we find Big Lake
Outcasts wallowing in second-from-last place at just above a 40% win /
loss ratio. You know, how sad. But everyone knew that this time,
THIS time, they would have a winning turn. Yes siree. But it never
happened, to the absolute shock of us all. This is my shocked face:

But even sadder than Dense's manhood was the day that he, in his
infinitesimal wisdom, decided to bury that rich Shadowspire history,
however sordid, and retire a founding team. A founding team! A piece
of Shadowspire history snuffed out forever like the cheap candles he
lights to impress the ungulates on date night.
"For what?!", cried the Furies. Some crappy new team amongst the
horde, 178th team to be registered in Shadowspire. Big effin whoopdee
doo. As Furies are wont to do, they looked askew of Dense's new team,
Big Lake Not-Good-At-Duelmasters (tm) doing business as "Big Lake
Solution" . Almost four years later, here we are, with them -- the
Solution, not the Furies -- languishing at not two this time but a
whopping FOUR teams from last place. Woo HOO, progress!
Sounds like it's time to pack up the Big Lake Solution and introduce
Big Lake Still-Not-Good-At-Duelmasters (tm) doing business as "Big Lake
Posers", as I suggested years ago! THAT should fix that tricky win /
loss record. Darn tootin. Until next month, of course.
Dense, should you dare to lift your face out of the pillow you
habitually clutch as you are thrust to and fro while sanguinely
servicing your betters, I urge you to humbly approach the Gladiatorial
Commission in general and Green Eyes in specific and, hat in hand,
acknowledge your
mistake and ask for both forgiveness and the Big Lake Outcasts back.
For once, look past
yourself and your pathetic ego and do a solid for the city of
Shadowspire.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Well, I woke up this morning and got myself an ale
Had to defend my title, so I got myself an ale
Croquette strode through the sands, his destiny to fail
Heads will roll, baby, roll
Heads will roll, baby, roll
Heads will roll, baby, roll
Heads will roll all night long
A fine effort, Gemini Croquette. Was shocked and awed that you got the jump on my
boy, Mim. But he was able to gut it out for the W. No rematch, you get my avoid.
Still trying to give Wrothgarr a shot at the bloodfeud.

SPY REPORT
Here we are once again in The Spire! Every arena day, I sit here with a steaming cup
of black coffee and a stale bagel from Otto's Diner, flipping through last week's news
and reports. Political unrest here, social upheaval there, and sprinkle in a few
over-active Chaos Gates to cap off the week in true Alastarian style. The comments
are always the same, "It was a great shock!" and "We never saw it coming!" Blah!
This is why I love the arena spy reporter life. I want the fights, divisions, and
overall bad blood to reach a boiling point! Conflict is the natural state here on the
sands and I LOVE IT! There is little diplomacy, tons of strategy, and always the
threat of death! Ah, give me the simplicity of the arena life any day!
Mim Jorrison, The Spire's resident (and self-proclaimed) Lizard King . . . truly, I
was disappointed we got no Kizard Ling title, but that is another spy reporter column.
Anyway, where was I? I don't even know, ah yes, the Duelmaster! Mim Jorrison
defended the throne this turn against Wrothgarr. Our Duelmaster sent the challenge,
which was a bit bold in the first place. Wicked Martyrs have an active bloodfeud
against Mim, but it appears he wants to take the fight to them rather than waiting
around! I like the gusto, just not sure Mim is as happy with it after losing the
throne to Wrothgarr. Congrats go to DMobster for his management of Wrothgarr.
The most avoided team is once again Kill Em All. They were mostly avoided by Pray the
Gods. It seems to have worked out well for Pray the Gods who enjoyed a nice 5-0 turn.
As for Kill Em All, they went 3-2-1. The most challenged warrior was Cutthroat Kate
from the Shanghaied guild. Gazdon of Memory was able to convince the Commission to
give him a shot against Kate. It did not end well for him though as Cutthroat Kate
surely earned her name. Kat wins in a one-minute, one-sided fight.
Someone old and someone new . . . makes it sound like a strange wedding tradition, but
it is just our arena death cycle. Terminator challenged down, I'll pause and wait for
the *SHOCK* to settle over everyone before continuing. Are we good? Okay, Terminator
down challenged and killed Zhuric. I'm sure his mama is proud, but it only took a 29
FE advantage for him to look competent on the sands. The other death came when a
random match up brought Hotter Pocket and Samuel Beckett together. I think Hotter
Pocket was a bit miffed when he realized he was fighting Samuel Beckett, the writer
and not Samuel Adams the beverage. Sorry, I should start such lines with ALLEGEDLY
because legal is so touchy these days. Samuel BECKETT leaves us with 46 arena fights.
Condolences to the dead!
I better get out of here before sunset. I hear that is when the crazies come out in
Shadowspire. Who would have thought a place with such a wholesome name and collection
of managers would develop such a reputation? Oh, everybody? Really? Okay, maybe I
should pay more attention to my surroundings. Alright, ya bums, I'll see you next
turn!

tough. I am not sure you are up to a partial, let alone a full, compliment. A full
compliment takes forethought. Planning. It is not to be rushed. Maybe you stick to
words you know, like "squaler" from a few cycles back. Consider upping your game to
phrases like "holler squaler". But, if you are insistent upon tackling a full
compliment, I encourage you to start with something basic and, from there, add on
something you know for devastating effect. Like, in your instance, a full compliment
might look something like this: "The way you thrust my face repeatedly into this
pillow, I feel completed. Thank you." Before long, we will all be in awe of your
indelible je ne sais quoi. -- Your buddy Vlad

WINTER BLOODGAMES 2021
Back by popular demand, we will be hosting a new round of Bloodgames beginning at the
Winter Mail-in! For those of you who always wanted the chance to manage the last
warrior standing alive upon the arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten
turns, even though several warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will
be crowned Champion of the Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for
little. A great general once said, "The object of battle is not to die for your
cause, but to make your enemy die for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed
the Duelmasters Bloodgames. We will hold three different arenas:
Mail-in-Style (DM 97): One strategy for all ten rounds, due January 16.
This arena will process along with the winter mail-in.
Regular Speed (DM 96): Strategy changes allowed; bloodfeud challenges only.
Turn 1 is due February 2 and turns process every 14 days.
Slow (DM 95): Strategy changes allowed; bloodfeud challenges only.
Turn 1 is due May 10 and turns process every 28 days.
Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions:
BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting
style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All are 84 points, 3-21, as usual.)
To submit your rollup, just write/type them up and send them in. We'll mail or email
your overviews and you can write up your strategies.
DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat
darker before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and
spirited. The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying
warrior. Even at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur.
REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters.
CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In the turn-based bloodgames (DM 96 and DM 95), there are
no regular challenges, only bloodfeuds. For the Mail-in style arena (DM 97), each
warrior will have a single strategy for all ten rounds. There will be no DA
challenges in either arena.
TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- DM 97 is due January 16, DM 96 is due February 2, and
DM 95 is due May 10. DM 97 will process along with the winter mail-in and the other
two are turn-based and will process on a 14- and 28-day schedule respectively.
MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.
ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.
NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of
Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.
FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than
one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49.
AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of
Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames
T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills.
The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion.
Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th
through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number
of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these
six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if
necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie.
A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills.
The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and
Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn
with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the
Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts.
AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila
Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three gladiators in
each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters games. Any special training
required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters combat will be
conducted before transfer into ADM. Astute managers will note that this means that
three warriors that are designed from scratch will survive the Bloodgames, win one of
the top three places, and go on to immortal glory! One of those warriors could be
yours!
The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
