Don't Tempt Fate
In the city of Shadowspire at the foothills of the mountains and known for its arena,
the Clan Longbeard guild thrived. Managed by the shrewd and calculating Visionist,
Clan Longbeard had carved out a formidable reputation in the gladiatorial world. The
guild's warriors: Gayne, Bavil, Meade, Ahrog and Kohlbe were seasoned fighters, each
trying to master their style.
Visionist, a man whose ambition knew no bounds, always sought ways to strengthen his
guild's position in the arena. However, his methods were not always above board.
Behind the scenes, he orchestrated schemes and made deals, all in the name of
maintaining the clan's reputation.
Ahrog, one of the guild's gladiators, had begun to show signs of decline. His once
fearsome prowess had dulled and Visionist knew that Ahrog's continued participation
was becoming a liability. Pragmatic as he is, he decided it was time for Ahrog to meet
an untimely end. Approaching the head of the arena infirmary, Dr. Thalos, Visionist
proposed a clandestine deal.
"Dr. Thalos," Visionist said in a hushed tone, "Ensure that Ahrog is reported to the
commission that he has died from his wounds. I will take care of having him disappear
from the city and you shall be rewarded."
Thalos, swayed by the promise of a reward, agreed to the arrangement. When the day of
the match arrived, Ahrog fought valiantly against Saucy Sheriff, but suffered
injuries. As he was carried to the infirmary, Visionist smiled with satisfaction,
believing his plan was set in motion. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Through a
series of blunders, the infirmary staff managed to report to the commission that Ahrog
had emerged from their care, battered but alive.
Visionist seethed with frustration but kept his composure, unwilling to reveal his
machinations and he could fix the mistake next time. Two weeks later, the Arena roared
with anticipation as the next round of fights commenced. This time Gayne, a veteran
warrior approaching his invite to the Isle, took to the sands. He fought with ferocity
against his opponent Wonder Woman, but the brutal contest left him severely injured.
Once again, the manager's thoughts turned to the infirmary.
In a cruel twist of fate, the infirmary staff, still grappling with their previous
mistake, confused their orders. Believing they were fulfilling Visionist's original
command, they actually allowed Gayne to die from his injuries. When the news reached
the Longbeard manager, he was consumed by a mix of horror and fury. Gayne's death had
been a tragic mistake.
Yet, Visionist found himself trapped. He could not voice his outrage or seek
retribution, for the entire arrangement had been shrouded in secrecy. Any attempt to
complain would expose his own nefarious dealings, potentially causing unknown
complications.
As Shadowspire's night cloaked the city in darkness, the manager sat alone in his
office, grappling with the consequences of his actions. The death of Gayne weighed
heavily on him, a grim reminder that even the most carefully laid plans could unravel
in the shadows of deceit. From that day forward, he vowed to be more cautious, knowing
that in the ruthless world of gladiatorial combat, every secret deal could carry a
perilous cost.

Welcome again to our glorious stands to watch these warriors battle for their lives on
the sands. No, your eyes do not deceive you! It is me, Huard DePriest, present and
accounted for to deliver you all The Spire news you need. Sit back and enjoy the show,
or don't enjoy the show, I don't care. Just sit back and be quiet while I get through
this report.
As happens often, our former Duelmaster was leaving for the Isle, so we needed to
select a new one. The first possible title fight was between two newly minted Lord
Protectors. Sir Charles challenged Aleksandr, the reigning Duelmaster, for a no-holds-
barred match of immortals. It is easy to go all-out when you have nothing to lose but
a fight. Aleksandr was victorious, but he was leaving. So, we move to the next title
fight, or what becomes the title fight in hindsight.
After Aleksandr, Wonder Woman was our most recognized warrior and a prime candidate to
take the throne. She matched up with Hana from the Far Travelers stable and made short
work of her to take the throne. Congrats to WW on her achievement! She was doubly
blessed by receiving a graduation notice. So, you know the drill? We will have a new
Duelmaster next turn. Everyone start jockeying for position now!
The ladies and gents over at Big Lake Solution are the most avoided for turn 451. It
appears Dragonbane Guild was not interested in facing them on the sands. The warrior
with the largest target on his or her back today is Ahna Misstep from Big Lake
Solution. She was bloodfeuded by the Cult of Bacchus's warrior, Ottobot. A bold
challenge but unfruitful as Ahna won. Ahna Misstep also got an invite from the
Gladiatorial Commission, and she will be leaving next turn too. It is nice to have
double graduates on consecutive turns. It has been a while since we have seen such
movement at the top.
Death was confined to the Dark Arena today, so there is not much to report in that
department. Den and his Big Lake Solution crew retain the top spot for the last 3-
turns. Far Travelers made a giant leap into 2nd place, while NBA Legends fell from 3rd
into 9th. We want to welcome the new team, Raven's Nest. Feel free to introduce
yourself in the personal ads. We want you to make yourself at home, and you will
hopefully come to enjoy our little slice of paradise in The Spire!
I better be moving along. Novgorodny Vir, who does the general report that goes back
to the Isle said a woman of good breeding scorns the warriors of Shadowspire. I want
to remind him that even women of good breeding dig scars! Now one is allowed to insult
you bums but me! So, come back next time you smelly, half-wits. Show off your scars

Dago Dracospear -- Looks like the erudite ol' Master Darque is enjoying having one
over on you from an etymology standpoint, thinking he can get you to believe anything
and then giggling about it when you do. You see, Spargle actually means "Asparagus"
in Low-, Med- and High- and any other "ieval" language all throughout Europe. From
15th-century Middle High German sparge, spargen, sparges, from Medieval Latin
asparagus, it's a really big deal with some folks. Every year, the appearance of white
asparagus in the markets and supermarkets heralds the arrival of spring in Germany. An
entire asparagus-eating etiquette has been developed for Spargelzeit, or asparagus
season. Spargelzeit is a compound word built from the roots for Asparagus and Time. It
is, quite literally, Asparagus-Time: each Asparagus-Time, with the pleasure of the
first jacket-less days and special asparagus menus posted outside every restaurant, is
more like the other Asparagus-Times than the Times Without Asparagus by which they are
framed. To celebrate, each village with a significant asparagus-growing apparatus
crowns its own Queen of Asparagus, who serves as the ambassador for her town and its
crop. The Queen of Asparagus appears at street fairs in towns and cities, she
distributes signed photographs in which she poses: sometimes clutching the stalks in
her hands, sometimes distributing them from a basket, sometimes lying in the fields in
her sash and gesticulating wildly, as if at the very fecundity of the Earth. This
latter, of course, reminds one of Dense. But, in any event, it's a sad state of
affairs when good Master Darque tries to sell you on Spargle meaning, in some faraway
place and time, effectively, the common rhetorical tool of "whataboutism". He's
probably secretly bitter about losing his Asparagus warrior and, regrettably, sought
to lash out as he is sometimes wont to do. Chins up, Dago and your fellow Dragonbane
