ALE HOUSE MERCS
The Fall (and Rise) of Indimar
"Father... what happened?" asked Pauly.
Indimar stood, but hunched over as if carrying weights on his shoulders. His
voice was a hoarse whisper.
"Business was booming. Scrodbucks and the Scrod Shop had never been more
profitable, so I retired from the fight game, ending my career as a manager. I put all
my resources into expanding the stores to new cities. It went well, at first. Then,
about 10 years ago, the scrod supply started to dry up. I had to close stores left
and right as there simply wasn't enough scrod to go around. Quickly, I was down to two
locations. Here in Shadowspire and the original in Aradi. I had settled here in
Shadowspire, because it's a calmer city, with less livestock roaming the streets.
With the two locations, I was doing just fine, and was enjoying semi retirement, when
the scrod supply completely dried up. News from Aradi was that they were extinct. So
that was the end of Scrodbucks and the Scrod Shop. Although I began to have severe
withdrawls once my personal supply of scrodbucks double shots ran out, I should have
been ok to live out my days on my substantial savings. Should have being the key
words. Without getting into the details, I lost all my savings in a Ponzi scheme.
Damn that Barnabas! I'm sure he's still out there somewhere in Scrodplant Slough,
laughing his head off. Ever since then, I've been living on the streets, growing
weaker and weaker without any scrodbucks to drink. My drive and motivation have left
me. I'm just plain tired, son. Just forget you saw me and move on with your life."
"Wow," said Pauly, "That's rough, but I might have something that will help."
tHoN (the Hand of Nuln) crawled down from Pauly's shoulder and into his satchel.
He soon popped out holding a scrodbucks doubleshot. Indimar's eyes widened, but his
head dropped in defeat. "That's gotta be over a decade old. No way it's still
drinkable."
"It is over a decade old," said Pauly, "but this isn't a satchel. It's a
Stablized Atomic Tote Containing a Hermetically Enveloped Location. Basically I can
put anything in this S.A.T.C.H.E.L. and when it comes out, it's as fresh as the day it
went in. I won it years ago at a Consortium sponsored Bingo Night in Aradi."
Indimar lunged at tHoN and ripped the can away from his clutch. He popped it
open and chugged it in one gulp. He crumpled the can and threw it down, reaching back
towards Pauly, eyes wild, "More!"
Pauly reached into the S.A.T.C.H.E.L. and pulled out two more. Indimar grabbed
both, downing them together in an instant, throwing them to the ground.
Indimar just stood there, breathing heavily, head bowed. Slowly, he raised his
head, tilting it all the way back, eyes closed. It was a cloudy day, but directly
above him, the clouds parted and a beam of sunlight shot down onto Indimar. He raised
his arms out to the sides as he slowly began to rise into the air. He was nearly
eight feet in the air when he stopped rising, and levitated there like some sort of
angelic hobo. Then Indimar himself began to glow, brighter and brighter. The light
became so blindingly brilliant that Pauly had to turn away. He could even feel the
heat of the light. Just as the heat seemed to become too much to bear, it receded and
the light faded. Pauly turned and looked up. The dirty street rat was gone, but
floating gently down to the alley floor was the still slightly glowing figure of Sir
Indimar Fallon. His salt and pepper (mostly salt) hair and beard were neatly trimmed
and he wore one of the finest suits of studded leather armor Pauly had ever seen. He
had a full quiver of arrows on his back, a sword on his hip, and in his hand he held
his fabled Dragon Bow. He strode over to Pauly, who stood there dumbfounded.
"Close your mouth, son, you'll catch flies," said Indimar, "Got any more?"
"Uh, yeah, should last even you a few more months," said Pauly.
"That'll have to do," said Indimar, "Let's go, we haven't any time to waste."
"Go where?" asked Pauly.
"The only place where we can both get the answers we need. Aradi." In the
distance, Pauly heard a goat bleat. He just shook his head. It had already begun.

SPY REPORT
Welcome back to The Spire, ya big lugs! Tis good to see you once again in the most
exciting no-tourney arena in the land. We had a great day on the sands of the arena,
and I'm confident from the cheers that the fans enjoyed it, too. We had a total of 38
fights with 4 deaths. We had two new teams join us and only one chartered team was
missing from today's action. Let's take a look at all the relevant news for turn 454.
Bavil entered our turn as Duelmaster and had the opportunity to defend the title.
Would he challenge or be challenged? Could he stand the test from one of our stalwart
Challenger Champions? Your guess was as good as mine, but this is why I love coming to
the arena - to answer such questions. Well, it was a random match-up between Bavil
and Tankera that decided our championship match. Bavil came out on top, once again,
and will now enjoy all the accolades that come from being a repeat champion! Congrats
to Bavil, who is managed by Visionist.
From the looks of things, I will say that Inebriation is the most avoided team for the
turn. It looks as if NBA Legends ran away the most. Is there some history here?
Trading down challenges, perhaps? Ah, who knows? The most challenged warrior is none
other than Killian from the Far Travelers guild. All those challenges were for naught
since Killian bloodfeuded Reika. Killian was overcome by Reika, so taking a challenge
from the field might have been a better option. Once again, who knows?
I said in the beginning that there were four deaths today. We had five last turn, but
three of them were by torchlight. Today, the big news is that only one of them came
via the Dark Arena. Arduin continues to purge their ranks, but it appears to be paying
off as their only loss this turn came from the Dark Arena loss. As an aside, they also
racked up 70 points to snag the Top Team on the Move award. The other deaths happened
to low-level Initiates. I'm sure there will be some bloodfeuds, but managers rarely
get worked up over such losses.
Time for me to go . . . to a bar. It is looking really thirsty out there right now. I
have worked up a sweat by watching all this work. Yeah, spy reporting is easy, which
is why I picked it as a career. I can't imagine going a whole day without a drink
because I was stuck in the arena pits. I can't imagine getting stabbed with a
longsword either, but I think the no-alcohol rule in the pit is worse. Anyway, I'll
see you next turn. I once again welcome the new teams and hope you make yourselves at
home. These brutes aren't so bad once you get to know them. Eh, most of them anyway.
