DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
How many years has it been? How many Challenger tournaments have I participated in?
Time all seems to be jumbled together in my non-ending quest to satisfy Noble's wanton
desire to achieve a Challenger tournament champion. One hint to how long it's
been...though my recent win in the arena (my 13th) was my 19th fight officially, if
you add up my total career now including tournaments, I have fought over 150 fights
total. When Noble activated me for last turn, he was certain I would get the call to
the Isle, but for whatever reason, the commission did not bestow an invite upon me.
Maybe they were absent for the turn...maybe they had developed a virus who kept them
home for the week...who knows?! All I know is that Noble was NOT happy when they
passed me over. To him, the confidence that would've given me was a key to my
victory. Instead, before the tourney had even started it seemed like I had "strike
one" against me...
Still, I was buoyed by my long experience, knowledge of many of the warriors I would
face, and my trusty longsword. Though I have experimented with many weapons along the
way, none feel quite as good as that trusty sword. I have tried using off-hand
weapons to increase my parrying ability, and allow me to attack from different angles,
but it never felt right holding two weapons so I decided to go with just the longsword
against every opponent this time out and focus more on attacking and dodging vs.
trying to parry or attack with the off hand. Despite not being immortal I was ready
for the challenge. That is, until the first fight began...
It was announced that I would face a small warrior named Whispy Lib in round 1. Not
particularly experienced, and fighting with a style that I am usually able to control
easily, I figured this would be an easy way to start 1-0, versus getting a tougher
matchup early on. The padded leather he wore should be easily pierced by a lunge from
my sword, and since I figured he was more of a defensive-minded warrior I went ahead
and started hot figuring I would finish him off quickly. My first attack was a
beauty, but he skillfully deflected it with his dagger making my body lurch forward
and he wacked me in my sword arm with his scimitar. Though it was a vicious shot I
parried his next attack, threw him off guard, and attacked again. This time he dodged
my shot again, getting me out of position, and hit me right on the side of the head.
Though the helmet I wore took the brunt of the shot it did "ring my bell" and the next
shot he delivered, again to my sword arm, finished me off. So there I was...not
immortal, in what was likely my career-defining moment, and 0-1. Not the start I had
hoped for.
Still, I was resolute. If I could win my next fight I would stay in the "general
pool" versus going to the fools tournament. It was announced I'd be fighting another
less experienced warrior named Maggot Souffle, who was also another defensive-minded
warrior. This fight started out a bit better. I ran hot again, and though he wore
scale, I was certain I could place my longsword blows in ways to exploit his armor.
Unlike the Whispy Lib fight, I started this one with two shots to his "middle," one
hitting his right thigh, and the next catching him in the lower back as I had him
slightly turned. Then, as I launched what would be the final shot, he quickly spun to
the side avoiding my blow, then used his scimitar to deliver blows to my right knee,
and ribs. Like Whispy, he hit hard for a little guy, and my scale had not held up
well to his attack. I could feel a cut just below my ribcage, and my sword arm was
still sore from the first fight. Then...something clicked.
Thinking back on the fight, I don't remember if the memories that came flooding back
were of the long arduous training I had undertaken over the years, or of the scoldings
I had received from Noble when not living up to my expectations, or the dreams of
taking my place alongside Noble's other TC winning warriors and finishing my career on
a high note. The one thing that WAS clear though, is that, to coin a phrase, "I ain't
going out like that"! I dodged his next attack (which was aimed for my head -- coup
de grace style) then pretty much put my sword half-way through his left leg to finish
him off.
Though I had some "close calls" in the next few rounds, especially round 4 vs. a
warrior named Argon Elite (another tiny guy who also likes the longsword) who hit me
six times in the first minute and another EIGHT times in the next two minutes before
finally fading out. One thing is for sure...when skill fails you, platemail can be
your best friend! Though most of the warriors I faced in the first nine rounds were
not contenders to win as they did not quite have the experience under their belts,
many of them are fighters to watch in the future including Bronzeville from Howlin
Chi, and Uber from It's Newark, both of whom gave me a good run. Turn 10 is where
things got interesting....
I was matched against Moses of Shepherds in round 10, a mean aimed blow who I thought
was going to give me my second loss when he actually got the jump on me and swung with
his scimitar seemingly at my head. Though startled that he actually got the first
swing, I was able to dodge that attack, take the initiative back and end him quickly
putting him out at 7-3. Rounds 11 and 12 led to relatively easy wins (though
Quicksand! of Bad Spots showed me that platemail works against you as well -- it took
FOREVER to put that guy away)! Round 13, I was matched against a warrior new to me
named Limper of House of Cards. I had not seen her before, and her arena record was
not too impressive. Nonetheless she was all over me in minute 1 and I was close to
being beat by her, but thankfully she was not able to get me on the ground and I
finally put her away in minute two after exhaustion from beating on me had set in.
Round 14 was a matchup with January O. Irontail. Yet another tiny opponent, this one
wore plate armor and wielded a longsword, with a tourney record of 11-2. Though I
dodged blows for most of minute 1, he caught me with three successive blows to my
abdomen, ribs, then my left leg causing me to go to the ground. Though it took 11
more shots to put me away, he finally did before falling over from exhaustion himself.
We both left round 14 12-2 -- and my dream was only one thin loss from slipping
between my fingers. My next match was announced and my stomach sank... it was Can't
Beat Tum.
I'm still not sure if he was the pre-tournament favorite, but he must've been right up
there. Standing at 6', I knew my platemail would not be as effective against him
because of the power he can generate. Still, minute 1 was going great! He couldn't
seem to hit me, and I had sprayed him with shots to both legs and his stomach, but
couldn't knock him down. I got confident...I got careless. He dodged my next blow,
and caught me on my off-arm. Not sure if he hit my funny bone, or just hit the armor
that hard, but the pain was crippling and drove me to my knees. At that point, I'm
pretty sure we both thought it was over. I remember looking into his eyes, and saw
the yearning to win that I was so familiar with. I lost track of how many times, and
where he hit me. The shots came like lightning, and felt about the same. Finally
towards the end of minute 2, I felt his shots becoming less and less painful. He WAS
WEARING DOWN!!! By the end of minute 2 I was back on my feet wit a new lease on life.
I timed his next two shots parrying both, then sidestepped and put him down with one
final blow to his gut. I was now one step away from destiny. Who was in my way??
The second matchup with January was for the title this time. We both were adorned the
same as we were in the previous fight (per tournament rules) and right out of the gate
it didn't look good for your boy. Once again he started the action hitting me in the
chest so hard it caused me to miss a breath. I felt it slipping away, but then
something miraculous happened. Though my mind was focused on his longsword, my ears
were taking in all the sounds. After the hit to the chest, when I was starting to
doubt myself, one of the spectators cried out to me, "Come on Icky Beats, you can do
it!". Though I had heard that before from fans seemingly countless times -- this time
I took it to heart. I COULD do it!! After dodging his next shot, then parrying the
third I was able to take the initiative and never look back. He never swung again,
and though it took 13 more shots to get through his plate and finally put him down I
did it, and thus achieved the goal!
Today, I am here to once more fight in my home arena. I figure I have two fights left
to my career so I might as well enjoy them. Thanks to all who cheered me on along the
way, and special thanks to those who doubted me. Your skepticism fueled me while time
was sapping me of the fire to go on. Satisfaction is a great outcome. See 'ya on the
sands!!

clash and bustle of the weekly DWES EG games. Notice that because of tied records,
there are no top team honors this turn. Come on you guys, shake it up out there! I
have begun to suspect trickery on the part of ROOKIE ARMADA 25. How else weeks like
this one's 1-0-0? How else the sudden move to 8th team? The proverbial rising comet
can only hope to compare with ROOKIE ARMADA 50's team record! A 1-1-0 week and now a
firm grasp on a 11th place ranking. I have begun to suspect trickery on the part of
MEDAL OF HONOR 21. How else weeks like this one's 1-0-0? How else the sudden move
to 12th team? The proverbial rising comet can only hope to compare with MEDAL OF
HONOR 31's team record! A 1-0-0 week and now a firm grasp on a 13th place ranking.
My tutors were fond of telling me that the higher you rise the harder you fall. This
week DECEIVERZ went 0-1-0 and fell 13 notches into 20th! 2 ALL BEEF BUNNIES bore the
brunt of major assault on their standings this week as they dropped to 22nd position
as the result of going 0-1-0! I have begun to suspect trickery on the part of
THIRSTY THUGS. How else weeks like this one's 1-0-0? How else the sudden move to
36th team? The proverbial rising comet can only hope to compare with GUYS?'s team
record! A 1-0-0 week and now a firm grasp on a 38th place ranking. My tutors were
fond of telling me that the higher you rise the harder you fall. This week G FORCER
went 0-1-0 and fell 22 notches into 39th! CHAOS REVENANTS bore the brunt of major
assault on their standings this week as they dropped to 42nd position as the result
of going 0-1-0! My tutors were fond of telling me that the higher you rise the
harder you fall. This week ROOKIE ARMADA 52 went 0-1-0 and fell 22 notches into
45th! MOONLIGHT MILE caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he
skillfully bested LURK and was awarded 35 points in recognition. In one of the
week's more notable duels, EMFLOYDJI put down STINKY, causing it to lose 13 points of
recognition in the process. Although SWIFTEMBER made a valiant effort, it did not
suffice to topple the reign of victorious ICKY BEATS. Heed this! A seer has warned
that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just
remember...5 or 7!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city DWES EG. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in DWES EG
these days is SQUARE DANCE RAP. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid
them. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any
of POWER PLAY last week. Busy avoiding SQUARE DANCE RAP? Loose talk at the arena
has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after
BLACK RUSSIAN. Watch your back! Give HOOKS IN YOU credit for his courage. Did you
note how he challenged FORD despite the 29 point difference in their rankings? Do
not the gods reward courage? HOOKS IN YOU it was that claimed victory in the bout,
while also rising 15 points in recognition.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins.
In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
The girls are as pretty in DWES EG as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed
a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
