TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Misfits All Around
Shelada Ventisa worried about many things, but chief among her responsibilities and,
therefore, her worries was making sure the arena officials were notified of the
weapons and armor for the Misfit Toys brand in Dwes Eg. The job opened up a short time
ago and she had done some similar work for another Manager; at least, that's what her
bona fides claimed. In truth, she had worked in one of the other manager's
organizations for a few weeks a few years ago and had only been responsible for the
occasional equipment notice. Fortunately for her, these Misfits didn't seen nearly the
volume that some managers sent.
Her work lay in front of her. Qwerty's weapons and armor request hardly needed
completion, but she checked it twice before shaking some sand on the words and setting
it aside to dry. Taking up the next page, she wrote her customary greeting, "To the
esteemed members of the Dwes Eg Gaming Commission, for the 632nd games, the management
of Misfit Toys has appointed me, Shelada Ventisa, authority and responsibility to
petition the board for the following items for on 'Undead Barbie, commission #82-
47584'... She checked her notes. Many notes this time. The boss had several of them
going to fight by candle light as well as numerous others who needed to apply what
they had been learning. Several had just enough time to qualify if they started now.
As yes, here were her notes about Undead Barbie...
Her hand dipped the quill in the ink well and was starting the second letter of the
weapon designation when the door to Shelada's office slammed open. She jumped in her
seat bumping the desk and causing some of the papers to shift.
"Madam! Master Beru was spotted entering the city! He'll be here in minutes!"
The excited servant girl should have knocked and waited, but Shelada couldn't blame
her. The entire staff remained so new and so confused about what should or shouldn't
be done. Sticking her quill back in its place, she quickly corked the ink and wiped
the nib of the quill. Her attention completely on the proper protocols for receiving
her new employer; a task her bona fides prominently and accurately related her
extensive experience in.
Later that night, when her assistant, an eager man who wanted to be around the new
master, was sent to finish what Shelada started, he would only notice the information
that was missing. He wouldn't check the information that was there. He wouldn't even
notice that the ink had dried without sand. How would he notice the extra curve on a
single weapon designation?
In short, he wouldn't.

Demitridov liked working for the commission. Mere days after his manager disappeared,
the dwarf had approached the commission and asked for a job. Given his background as a
Striker and an opening in their weapons preparations team, there hardly needed to be
any discussion. Even the money question was simple: he had none, so they offered the
barest minimum they needed. That had been nearly two decades ago. Now Demitridov
pretty much ran the weapons preparations team. A well balanced individual, his
intelligence allowed just enough wisdom and insight to allow him to notice glaring
deficiencies while allowing him to set aside the niggling worries some others
struggled with. Besides, Demitridov liked the routine. Day one was clean up. All the
weapons were gathered, inspected, cleaned and oiled OR set aside for repairs.
Depending on the extent of the fighting, this could take an extra day, but generally a
single long one was enough. The only part of this task he still hated was "retrieval".
But he was high enough up the food chain now that he only had to do it occasionally to
make sure his boss knew he was willing. "Retrieval" happened when a weapon was not
removed from a warrior. Usually this was due to them dying which was creepy enough;
but there were times when the weapon was left in a wounded warrior and a member of the
team would have to go to the healers to recover it. This could particular stink
(literally!) if the healers were still working on the warrior.
Day two through four were all about repairs and preparation. A trip to the diviners
early in the second day gave them an indication of the number and types of weapons
that would be necessary. But otherwise, these days were spent at the forges. Fix this,
melt down that to make something new, sharpen these, hammer those straight, that sort
of stuff.
Day five the early birds would start sending in their notices. The notices had to
adhere to a specific format, per commission regulations. Deviate from this format and
warriors could find themselves with incorrect items, incorrect match-up, or left off
the fight list entirely! In certain extreme cases, warriors even ended up fighting at
night despite other intentions by their manager!
The notices began the primary task Demitridov held responsibility over: compliance.
Every team at some point or another claimed a weapon, a piece of armor, or some other
detail of the arena had been tampered with. Sometimes they claimed it was to their
detriment like a cursed or broken weapon. Other times they claimed the other party had
magically enhanced or superior made weapons. Heck, he even dealt with one situation
where managers claimed another manager was shaving down the size of weapon grips so
their warriors had an unfair advantage in the colder months.
To combat this, Demitridov and many others throughout the land would set aside the
needed number of weapons as the notices arrived. These were inspected again and
anything not meeting his standards was set aside for the next preparation cycle. For
the next seven or eight days, notices trickled in and the weapons storage area grew.
Finally, the morning of the fights, Demitridov pulled out the device which indicated a
magic item and ran it over every weapon individually before lining them up on tables
in a separate room where two members of the team stood watch. After every weapon was
confirmed, Demitridov and his team pulled the warriors' requested weapons at random
and then went to the leftmost weapons in the line and gathering those needed for the
notice and then taking them to the warrior's designated ready area. Once there, the
secured chest was unlocked, the weapons (and later armor) added to the chest, and the
key returned to the Commission Check-in department. Long experience had taught
Demitridov where to find the secret of each of the warrior's fighting style and he had
long learned the typical weapons of each style. So it didn't escape his notice when
one Undead Barbie asked to use a weapon which was fairly uncommon for one of her
style. But by that time, the last minute notices were arriving and it was too late to
track it down...

Larinia hated her arena name. "Undead Barbie"? Really? And why did that mean she had
to wear a pink top and short dress which had been decoratively torn? And the make-up!?
Oh gosh! The make-up! She complained about the shoes as well at times, but those were
actually her favorite part of the routine. Some of them made her wonder if there was
some wizard who just focused on making shoes! How cool would that be?!
"Undead Barbie" returned for the first time in far too many years and it meant that
everything had to be perfect. Make-up took longer, they changed her outfit four times,
finally deciding on a salmon shade of pink which was agreed upon to "make her look
more powerful". By the time she was sent to the arena, she was fighting to remind
herself that killing could happen in the arena, but was not the Master's desired
outcome. It was her only consolation for the fact that she was fairly sure the Master
also didn't want her killing the prep team!
And to top it all off, two members of the prep team were at the arena when she
arrived. Both leapt into action reapplying make-up to spots she suspected were fine.
She literally had to push them away when she was called to final preparations.
Grabbing her belt, she ran her hands across the hilt of the weapon there. Putting it
on, she drew and sheathed the weapon again. She reached over to her primary weapon,
the one she would walk into the arena with. Her trusted... What was this thing?!

From the stands, Master Beru waved amiably at others he knew. His tasks for the day
were done. Now he could sit back and evaluate and enjoy the spectacle. Some of today's
warriors held high prospects ahead of them. The thrill of it all still sent a jolt
through him at times.
One such warrior was "Undead Barbie." Her name was getting announced as well as her
opponent, one "Raging Rooster". Undead Barbie wasn't what some managers would call a
promising candidate. Master Beru thought the young woman had talent and way of
carrying herself which might go far. Her forays into tournaments had met some limited
success. Perhaps it just required the right tournament environment to give her a joly.
But the jolt he felt had nothing to do with her prospect when he saw her hesitantly
walk into the arena. She nearly tripped as she stared at the weapon in her hand.
Knowing he would see her fight, Master Beru shared her confusion. But that would have
to wait. What would she do now?!

What am I going to do now? I don't know how to use this thing? I mean we tried
everything back in the beginning, but I clearly was not best suited for these things.
It was in this moment that "Undead Barbie" decided it was time to own it. It was her
character. Bad things happened? Okay, fix my hair and lipstick and lets keep going!
She walked to the starting places. When the fight began, she ran forward and then
circled her opponent. And then she tried something new. Something unusual. Something
marginally suited. And she made it work.

OOC: I had a shock when I got UB's fight for 632. Not surprising to those who've
attempted to read my hand-writing, apparently I wrote a letter which looked like
another letter and got a different weapon. Fortunately for me, UB was marginally
suited at least and managed to win the fight despite my poor penmanship. But as I
thought about it, it made me think about how that would play out in the "real world"
and so you have this little something. First and Final draft combined, so don't bark

SPY REPORT
Greetings, Warriors of DWES EG. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to
give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. Perhaps it is
ANGRY CHICKEN members' intannibility that enabled them to move from 37th to 4th last
week... (Less time in the sun...) Like a chunk of francium heaved into a wet pond,
BLUE TIME JEWELS blew up the rankings to 30! Managers were muttering after BASES
LOADED, BABY! showed DWES EG what they could do: 2-0-1 to move up by 20. Perhaps it
is FALLEN HEROES members' intannibility that enabled them to move from 25th to 9th
last week... (Less time in the sun...) Like a chunk of francium heaved into a wet
pond, MISFIT TOYS R blew up the rankings to 18! Rumor has it an incurable disease
has swept the stable of FALLEN MASTERS. Note their drop in the rankings from 6th to
21st. Watch out!!! Perhaps it is END OF THE LINE members' intannibility that
enabled them to move from 34th to 22nd last week... (Less time in the sun...) The
boys at STONED ROOKIES 2 aren't the happy-go-lucky bunch we all know and love, after
suffering a 11 drop last week. Thinking about sending their team manager to the Dark
Arena is ALTERED STATES, after suffering a 11 drop in ranking. Say what you will
about blind luck and dirty fighting, but FAMOUS GOLFERS will tell you 20-17-1 is
nothing to laugh at... Practice pays for PISSED PULLET, who pummelled PERSISTANT
BEGGAR, to pocket 21 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, FRENCH PEA 2
was winsome, after beating GREY INIQUITY and seeing him lose 17 points. Well,
Duelmaster ONLY ROCK 'N ROLL Dark Arena Challenged DARK ARENA's HIGH ELF. Is a
24-8-1 good enough? Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by HIGH
ELF, of DARK ARENA, who despite a 0-0-0 couldn't overcome DWES EG's Number 1. So
who's the team that's been walking into taverns last week and ordering milk? Sounds
like a PR stunt to me.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like a horde of jackals fleeing from
the lion, so did the "warriors" in DWES EG avoid END OF THE LINE. As a woman of good
breeding scorns the "warriors" of BOOKIE'S APOTHECARY, so did that sorry team shy
from END OF THE LINE Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and FRESHMAN HERO is it
right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't BLUE TIME JEWELS proud!
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Those who owe
ONLY ROCK 'N ROLL of STONED ROOKIES 55 money and had written him off, take note:
he'S BACK FROM THE DARK ARENA!!! AND he'S MAD!!! THE SLAMMER of BASES LOADED, BABY!
sends NUMBER ONE of ROOKIE MAIDEN 32 goes to the Weary Warrior's Retirement Home.
DWES EG has no place for weaklings! The audience gave a nice round of rasberries to
DELERIUM of ALTERED STATES, for expiring in such an ungraceful fashion. 6-6-0,
indeed! Ask not for whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee.
Leave me now, you base fools! More important duties call me. Can anything
compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for DWES EG? On that giddy note I take
