Tidbits and miscellaneous comments the boss remembers from his high school days and
times (1959-1963) in very Southern Indiana on the Ohio River. (By the way, parts of
Southern Indiana and very "hillbilly" like, hence the character Smitty and his
lingo.)
- 81 started in the Freshman class; 42 graduated
- Mrs. Vaughn (English, Lit, & Latin) made us memorize--can still quote
Macbeth (mostly Lady Macbeth)

- My home town--Cannelton--was County Seat; population 1800 and a few
- Until Sophomore year (moved to the outskirts) I walked 4-5 blocks to HS
- Pep Rallies included player and cheerleader rides on the fire trucks
- There were 4 sports--football, basketball, baseball, and track (no girls)
- I was considered a "country boy" from the Catholic grade school
- "Mamie start packin', the Kennedy's are comin" was a common pin worn.
- It was a nearly one mile swim across the Ohio river to KY
Only a few of us could make up--you end up 3 miles down river!
- Celebrated the sesquicentennial (150) age of the town my junior year
- Churches and bars were the substantial town businesses
- Western Auto was the preferred store to shop.
- A popsicle (two sticks) cost a nickel
- Serials and cartoons were as important as the movie

- A 5:05 won the mile race in track; 5'7" the high jump.
- We played the same teams as "Hickory" (actually Milan) from "Hoosiers"
- There really were town car caravans to basketball games
- The PAC (Packet Athletic Conference) played 8-man football
- Interesting team names were Owensville Kickapoos and Ft Branch Twigs
- There was no three-point line or shot-clock.
- Our greatest "rival" was the dreaded Tell City Marksmen
- My cousin, John Arnold--Tell City--struck me out every time I faced him
- Homecoming Queen--Flo Ann Chenault
- Black and white TV's were common. (so was no TV)
- Interesting nicknames of classmates (ours--Smitty)

"I just think I should get more recognition," Karintol said. He was Ferencian,
which the Gladiatorial Commission for their own inscrutable reasons named Karnhorn,
and he had fought last turn under the title of "Osksi Noble." None of the local
people was really clear on what or where "Osksi" was, but many of the titles bestowed
on the standby fighters were obscure.
Arenamaster Salgreid raised one eyebrow, which made him look even more
villainous than usual. "Why?"
Nervously, Karintol reminded himself that Salgreid was a reasonable man, even if
he was half orcish, and that he was not given to berserk furies for no reason.
"Well...it's this 'osksi' name," he said. "It sounds like some kind of fish sauce!
You know, the kind they make on Giduina and export--"
Salgreid grimaced, curling his lips away from his tusks in scorn and disgust.
"Rotten fish," he muttered. "That's the kind of depravity that you get on islands."
"Well...I don't know about islands," Karintol muttered. "Some people on the
coast use it, too."
The arenamaster snorted.
"Yeah, well, anyway. I just figure, well, I was in a TITLE match last time.
That's an honor, but not one that FISH SAUCE deserves." The Ferencian shuddered.
"Could you, well, petition the Commission to give that position a REAL name, one that
actually MEANS something here in Telorinthe?"
Salgreid shrugged. "I can ask, but I make no promises. The Commission does
what it wants, regardless." He paused, studying the smaller man. "You're from
Carloi, aren't you? I'll ask 'em to make it the Carloi Noble, then."
SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of TELORINTHE! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Fortune did not smile upon DARK
CARNIVAL this time out who this turn suffered a fall into 9th position in the wake of
a 0-0-0 round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner!
Witness how this week REJECTS went 2-3-0 to move up 7 in the rankings. My praise to
OLDIES for their 4-1-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought round
deserving of notice! SHU caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he
skillfully bested LETTER SWEATER and was awarded 21 points in recognition. In one of
the week's more notable duels, ISHTAR put down KNOW AND DESPAIR, causing her to lose
10 points of recognition in the process. Due to his absence and inability to defend
the throne, ROID FLOYD has lost the title of Duelmaster. The city has turned out in
honor of PEP RALLY, for with his arena victory he may now lay claim to the highest
position in the city! Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he
never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city TELORINTHE. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in
TELORINTHE these days is PUNY ORC PELOTON. At least, most blades in town are looking
to avoid them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent
the better part of last week avoiding PUNY ORC PELOTON. Indeed it was CIXELSID
HEROES. Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. MR.
ELBIDERCNI take warning! You have more than a few enemies in TELORINTHE. A match
that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that TOA JALLER posted a
challenge against the more highly recognized 3RD AND 98. The results, you ask?
Well, the firebrand TOA JALLER was overcame by 3RD AND 98. Remember warriors, this
is the discipline of steel.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers
the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
The girls are as pretty in TELORINTHE as ever I remembered them....and the
fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari

15 managers have announced for the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse!!!!!! There is still
time to join and make a name for yourself in one of Alastari's fiercest contests! I
must correct a mistake in the previous announcement. I incorrectly called it the
Slaughterhouse 2, but in reality, this will be the third installment of the
Slaughterhouse!
HOW TO JOIN
*Find a Partner
*Declare your intentions in the Stormcrowe newsletter to enter before the first turn
of the contest. You may also email or diplo Master Darque.
*Each manager entering the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse must submit one (1) Team Roll-Up
Certificate. Only certificates will be accepted for entry. All certificates
submitted will be used during the course of the contest as prizes.
*RU certificates must be received on or before the first turn of the contest which is
Stormcrowe Turn 263 (running approximately November 27, 2007).
RULES and SCORING
Rules and Scoring information for the Slaughterhouse will be posted every turn in the
Stormcrowe newsletter beginning with Turn 260 and in a final all arena ad in
November.
PRIZES
ENDURANCE AWARD: One (1) +1 Bonus Potion will be given to every team that competes
in 60 of the 65 contest fights.
KILL MASTER AWARD: The individual manager with the most kills will receive a Limited
Immortality Potion. This potion may be applied to one (1) warrior. He/she will be
resurrected ONE-TIME if they are killed in Basic D2.
TOP TEAM AWARD: Each manager on the winning team will receive the following prize
pack for their Slaughterhouse Dominance:
*One (1) +1 Bonus Potion
*Favorites Knowledge for one (1) Warrior
*Undisclosed amount of Team RU Certificates
Special note from RSI on prizes: All contest prizes must be used within three
months. All contest prizes may only be used on a living warrior on the participating
contest team in DM 45. The immortality potion may resurrect a warrior one time,
after a death in DM 45 only, after which time the potion disappears.
