Hosted by Rockport, way down in Southern Indiana on the Ohio River, the gym was packed this Saturday night between Christmas and New Year. Most of the eight or nine hundred fans (big gym, huh?) were Rockport Zebra supporters, but Cannelton had a healthy backing, as the towns were only 20 miles apart separated by one great big corn field along the Ohio River. (Well, Tell City was there in between, but since no Bulldog would recognize a Kraut from Tell City, let's just play like it wasn't there.) The Bulldogs had scraped by the Dale Golden Aces in the first afternoon game by a score of 42-40 when Cannelton's star, Tom Taylor, hit a jumper at the buzzer. The Zebras, on the other hand, had pounded the Owensville Kickapoos 66-39. perhaps kicked some poo is a better description? There was no question that the home team was favored to win its own Holiday Tournament. The Zebras hit the floor first to the burst of the pep band. The black and white uniforms were the talk of the tournament! They had the tallest player in this event at 6'5", and he was a bruiser. The Bulldogs followed shortly, ensconced in their normal old gold outfits. (Rumor has it, they were called old gold because this was the 10th year they were worn.) The starters for the Cannelton team were all players on the football team which coach wrote about in a previous article. (In those small schools either you were an athlete, or you weren't! All four sports, football, basketball, baseball, and track were populated by the same guys. For example, Coach was center and center-linebacker for football, a guard on the hoops team, catcher and infielder in baseball, plus ran the mile in track. He also held down first-seat alto sax in the band, and a partridge in a pear tree.) Tom Taylor (read "star") 6-1 senior forward Bill LeMaire (Frenchie) 6-2 senior forward Ed Bland (Eddie) 6-0 sophomore center Jack Tuggle (Tug) 5-9 senior guard Coach (Smitty) 5-10 senior guard The key subs were, Cassidy, Keano, Minto, and Spencer. Cassidy was a little under the weather--10 ugly stitches on his shooting arm--but in those days one didn't let a little farm accident or blood get in the way of sports!) It was apparent from the opening tip that things were not going to go well for the Bulldogs. The Zebras scored a fast break on the tap, and Tom fouled for a three- pointer. Moments later, after a Tug miss, the Zebras scored again--another three- pointer on another Taylor foul! You could see Coach Hafele on the bench talking to Cassidy to come in for Taylor. He was too slow. Seconds later, on a steal, Taylor fouled the thief. Taylor was clearly getting angry and out of control. With Cassidy at the substitute table, awaiting a clock stop, Taylor hacked his man on an attempted steal, and he had his fourth foul. The horn blares and Cassidy enters the game. Time--4 minutes gone in the 1st quarter. Star Tom has four fouls and hasn't touched the ball and is on the bench. Score--Rockport 8, Bulldogs zippo. But, hey, those country boy Bulldogs can work together. By hook and crook they begin to pull back into the game, and at the half, they are only down 4. Smitty is hot and has scored 5 straight two-handed set shots from the top of the key. (Would have been 3 pointers today) In the locker room, Coach Hafele instills further Bulldog gusto, and says to Star Tom, we need you. Are you ready? (You think any red-blooded red-necked country boy is going to say "no"?) With the crowds roaring ... Two bits; four bits; six bits; a dollar. All for Bulldogs stand up and holler. (Cheerleader Captain Flo Ann Chenault sure does look nice doing that cheer!) And Gimme a Z (Z) Gimme a E (E) Gimme a B (B) Gimme a R (R) Gimme a A (A) What's it all spell? Zebras. Zebras. Zebras. (And that Rockport brunette cheerleader has some real headlights. Yessiree.) On the first play of the half, a Zebra player drives the lane where Star Tom is firmly planted to take the charge, But, NO! The refs called the foul on Taylor. The blind bums! Taylor is our with his fifth foul, having played barely four total minutes in the game. (In his final two years--junior and senior--this will have been the ONLY game that he did not score in double figures, averaging just above 20 both years. Indeed, he scored ZERO.) It was all down hill from there. The hoofed hellions had their way with the puppy dogs, winning their own Holiday Tournament 72-48. The bus ride back home through the corn fields late that night was a somber affair. (In those days, the team/s and cheerleaders all rode the same bus, and the caravan of small town folks and backers followed in their cars, --Just like in the movie "Hoosiers".) Coach and class not so long ago celebrated the 40th year reunion. Of all Taylor's high school games, this one was the most remembered. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Well, it seems I made it, another turn at the top. This last fight was a little closer then the others, so maybe my time here coming to an end. I am not going down without a fight though :) My manager has been all cheers and beers since I have held the DM throne for 3 turns. It the first time in his career that any of his gladiators has done that particular feat. Congrats to me and congrats to my manager (Wretch). Well, I am not one for words, so I will do the rest of my talking on the sand with my sword in hand. Let's dance. Osserc SPY REPORT Much has changed in TELORINTHE since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Up 'n down. Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, BAD SIGNS' 7th moved them up to 4-1-0 place. REJECTS showed TELORINTHE what they were made of as they fought with a vengeance to walk off with 4-1-0. What's with UNIFY WITH A SPADE? It actually beat CIXELSID HEROES' NAMREPUS, and walked away with 18 more points from the fight. Major screwup at AQUA TEENS. OL' DRIPPY lost 11 points to TRAKE. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe OL' DRIPPY will provide more easy wins... INVIDIOTS' hatred of THE ASCENDANTS surfaced again as GOSSIPID challenged TELORINTHE's top dog. I'm sure TELORINTHE is excited about GOSSIPID, the new Duelmaster from INVIDIOTS. (remember?) But when you've seen as many as I have... Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting! No matter the time or place, men will always duel. How well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, ZEITGEIST! The bums at DEATH'S CHOSEN couldn't face the challenges from ZEITGEIST! No excuse for that! How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, MOONITE! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters to walk away, or not? Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty. Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. The end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Time for my medication, so I'll leave now.
