Hailing from an alternate "Earth," he sought the means to reach the Norse realm of Niflheim. There, he brokered a deal of sorts with Hel, which garnered him the souls of skilled and desperate warriors. Embodied through mystical means, these cold-hearted warriors most closely resemble the Northwights of Alastari. In truth they are Soulbound, and can only earn redemption through ascension to the Isle. To the eyes of Alastari, Lady Blue is a Northwight. But in reality, she is Helbound. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Telorinthe ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Winter gripped the city of Telorinthe. In so far as the Elders of the city allowed, at least. Snow fell on the towers of the High City, and on the graceful black limbs of the trees in the Garden of the Pear Tree. It did not fall on the streets, to be trodden into dirty slush. Except in the Lower Town. The Elders knew, it was one of the basic tenets of Lorinthine Philosophy, that you could not have beauty without, somewhere, ugliness to balance it. Let the ugliness be in the Lower Town, then. It was another way the people there could be useful. Arenamaster Salgreid had his own views on the proper distribution of beauty and ugliness, and he set the arena's janitorial crew to shoveling the snow out of the way before it could become filthy slush. Of course, if you'd ASKED him about it, he would have maintained that he was having the snow removed as a simple matter of hygiene and good business and not as a subversive act. There might even be a few people in the governing circles who believed this. Salgreid was pacing the perimeter of the arena complex, making sure all was ready for the day's combat, when one janitor came panting around a corner and ran up to him. The man's face was pale despite the cold, and his eyes showed white all around the rims. His mouth moves silently, and he gestured at something behind him. The arenamaster raised an eyebrow, put a hand on the hilt of his sword, and stepped toward the coner. "It will mean trouble," Vilishizar of the Mysterious Cult muttered. There was only one man left to hear him out of the half-dozen aspirants to the Cult who had set out on this round of the Lower Town. Trelmorin, a half-elf and as much an outcast in his way as the half-orcish arenamaster, licked his dry lips and said nothing. He wished that Villish didn't sound so happy about trouble coming. He wished even more that Villish didn't mean him, Trelmorin, to be the last of the bodies left to 'decorate' the Lower Town. He would have run away if not for the spell that bound his limbs to Villish's will. He would have screamed, had that been permitted. He had TRIED to scream, when Villish had killed the first of his companions and sucked out the man's blood. "One more where it will do the mossst good," Villish said. He began moving again, and the young man followed helplessly behind him. Indisvol of Cirina sipped his wine cautiously. The elves of Telorinthe were said to be connoisseurs of wine, but elven taste was not his. Besides, this Broken Chain place was not an elven hangout; it was full of laborers and lower-class bravos. They probably didn't care about the taste of their wine at all. He would have sneered, but he was alone here and not a fool. Why had Gilgorak chosen this low dive for the meeting? Surely the dwarf could betray the Trade Masters just as easily in a more civilized location? If the wretched longbeard did truly plan betrayal. Indisvol wished again that he had made the contact himself. There was, he calculated, about a ten percent chance that his own guildmaster, Sidloreth of Giduina, was planning a little betrayal--of his rising journeyman trader Indisvol. It wouldn't be the first time such a thing had happened. Ferencian mercantile politics were literally cut-throat. A dwarf slid into the seat across from him, not bothering to ask first. Beer slopped over the edge of his mug as he thumped it down onto the table. One thick finger traced a sign in the spilled beer before wiping it away. Indisvol tensed. So. Contact. This was it, then. His own hand moved to shape the countersign. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Oh My God! Osserc was like so trying to hit me and I was like so trying to move away and then all of a sudden I was like so trying to hit him back and then he was like falling down and then ohmygod! I was like duelmaster. But Osserc was like totally cool about it and anyway I don't believe what Mr. Elbidercni told Make Me Holy Again about Osserc's mother being a mountain troll because physically it'd be like such a yuck for his mom and so what if his father fed him goblin blood instead of formula milk as a baby it's not like he had any choice in what he could he eat and if his mom was like a free spirit and hung around by the troll caves instead of the church that's like really not that big a deal or even like any of our business at all, ya know. And besides if everyone had to like worry about whether their fathers were like really their fathers or not then where would Golden Sombrero and Tautrosa be? Not to say that their fathers aren't really their fathers but Confession told Ecaps Ghost that years ago there was this like totally hot Dark Stranger hanging around Telorinthe and then like nine months later a couple of kids were born to a couple of mothers but I think it's just like a total coincidence that Golden Sombrero and Tautrosa were born like a week apart even though their fathers were away fighting Crusade type like things at the time and even if there were some totally cute Dark Stranger types running around some months before some gladiators were born what's that really even prove at all, ya know. And it's not really important now anyway cuz I'm like the duelmaster and so when I like say something everyone has to like listen and I'm like saying that all these rumours going around Telorinthe are like totally uncool and they have to really be stopped so I'm just gonna be like the total anti-rumour-duelmaster and my duelmaster thing's not gonna have any bad things to say about anyone at all or even ever.... Except of course and this isn't really like a bad thing it's just what some people are saying about Royal Rage Hammer and I don't like really believe them but... [etc., etc., etc., until...well, please cows, come home.] Your Duelmaster, Gossipid SPY REPORT Hail and well met warriors of TELORINTHE! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team THE ASCENDANTS was unseated this week as INVIDIOTS moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 3-2-1 record for the round. Fortune did not smile upon CIXELSID HEROES this time out who this turn suffered a fall into 9th position in the wake of a 0-0-0 round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week ZEITGEIST went 4-1-1 to move up 7 in the rankings. My praise to BAD SIGNS for their 4-1-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought round deserving of notice! LETTER SWEATER caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested TAUTROSA and was awarded 25 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, 3RD AND 98 put down LYRIAL, causing her to lose 10 points of recognition in the process. Not for nothing has GOSSIPID in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week she's proven hers combat skill yet again. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps? Many and various are the arts of battle. In TELORINTHE "art" is a word that has long since passed from the language! My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in TELORINTHE these days is CIXELSID HEROES. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding CIXELSID HEROES. Indeed it was OLDIES. Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. LOTUS-EATER take warning! You have more than a few enemies in TELORINTHE. Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand ready at your right hand forever! Perhaps even the strong cannot escape the vagaries of this world. This week arena veteran TAUTROSA was slain, despite a 7-3-0 record. I have seen warriors die in youth. I have seen men cut down in their prime. This week THE ASCENDANTS must mourn the loss of 7-3-0 OSSERC to INVIDIOTS. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this! The girls are as pretty in TELORINTHE as ever I remembered them....and the fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME GOSSIPID 99 7 3 1 66 INVIDIOTS (16) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LOTUS-EATER 193 6 2 1 66 INVIDIOTS (16) LETTER SWEATER 43 7 3 1 63 OLDIES (5) 3RD AND 98 142 7 2 0 58 BAD SIGNS (24) -REPUS GROVER 77 7 1 0 57 CIXELSID HEROES (11) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME GOLDEN SOMBRERO 139 8 1 1 53 BAD SIGNS (24) ROYAL RAGE HAMMER 37 8 2 0 46 AAAARRGH HAMMERZ (3) SIMPLETONGUE 194 7 1 0 46 INVIDIOTS (16) TRAKE 72 8 2 0 38 THE ASCENDANTS (10) UNIFY WITH A SPADE 200 4 3 0 37 WAITING FOR DAWN (33) MAKE ME HOLY AGAIN 198 5 2 0 36 WAITING FOR DAWN (33) -SHU 205 3 1 0 36 PANTHEON (28) -MR. The RUGS are making my life miserable. Just see if I empty their trash cans! -- Custodian Foe -- I don't think of you as such; rather I see us as friendly students of the same technique. (I'm just better dressed.) -- Letter Sweater Kas of Ys -- I guess we showed 'em what endurance is all about. We did. -- Confession Letter Sweater -- Good luck to you. -- Sea Of Gore Pep Rally -- So much enthusiasm. You guys aren't big on teaching, are you? -- Know and Despair Namrepus -- I dig...I do not juggle. -- Unify The -- Good fight. Obviously I need to rethink some things. -- Never Sleep Torportly -- Bit big for a dwarf...too much GM food. -- Make Me Holy Again Osserc -- I thought you came with the arena, you have been DM for so long. -- Reaper Hammer -- Good luck with the new warriors. The DA has not be giving up very good stuff lately. Perhaps it is better in 83.... -- Reaper Waiting for Dawn -- Please be advised your running of four of five warriors (which coincidentally the one warrior is in a bloodfeud) is against the terms of running in the arena. The pledge was to run five of five warriors. If you wish to duck the bloodfeud do not run your warriors at all. I will ask for your removal if your team does not run all warriors this and next turn. This arena was set up so subversion of this type would be avoided. -- JGW Hammer -- Please start the removal process for Waiting for Dawn. Their actions have shown they do not respect the direction of this arena and they have violated the terms of their pledge for the arena. -- JGW Gossipid -- I knew people were closing in on me and it seems you were the one who finally got me. Congrats to you on the throne. Maybe we shall have a return dance with the results being different. -- Osserc Gushan -- It might have been slow and boring but a win is a win and I will take any I can get. -- Treach 3rd and 98 -- Very nice challenge. I think I need to take my wounded pride and go hide for a while before I am ready for you again. -- Kallor Custodian -- Wow. Interesting challenge. Your manager seems to get the best of my team on most his challenges but I guess I got lucky this time. Maybe next time. -- Fener Ol' Drippy -- Nice little fight if not a little slow, but the win is all I care about. -- Trake Invidiots -- Congrats to your fighter on the DM throne. -- Wretch Dark Oracle -- Your reasoning is sound, so no offense has been taken. Hopefully my gladiator has ascended through the seven games to avenge her fallen Comrade. Good luck on the sands. -- Azaziel Steal Home -- Yea right! With a name like yours, I don't think a girl would be smart to listen to your advice! *wink* -- Lyrial Golden Sombrero -- I hurt! I really hurt!! -- Rizzyn The Scribe -- I personally think that you have a great idea! It'll be nice to start developing the history of this great arena. -- The Dark Angel Azaziel Gossipid -- Congrats on maintaining your position! I'd like to buy you a drink at "Eldritch Concoctions." -- Azaziel, mgr. Death's Chosen Moonite -- Waffles make poor choices in defense (unless they sing in E). I've been hesitant to cause conflicts in existing storylines, and have thus restricted my few tales to interior descriptions. So, bring on the trailing ends, just beware of dangling participles (those things are deadly!). -- Michael Eldritch Cheers to Invidiots in Gossipid's ascension to the throne! Drinks on us at Eldritch Concoctions. Not a very fine showing for Zeitgeist lately, I'm having "Steel and Silk" flashbacks. *wince* HAMMER! Where is The Council? Has it been rendered null and void? Just curious. On a side note, could I get some managerial feedback on weapon stats. I'm still researching the whole "favorites" thing, and I won't know how accurate I am till some of my projects graduate. So, is anyone up to a round of friendly debate on the matter? -- Michael Eldritch Okay, you guys, go for it! Don't worry about tangling lines on me, I'm very nimble on keyboard. -- the Scribe 15 January 2008 Order of Lost Souls Where there is a beginning, there is an end. Where there is a whole, there is a part. Where there is light, there is dark. All these are found to be true and along with the most important, when something is lost it can always be found. Many a person has walked this land in one form or another. Some truly believe that here is there and there is here but who really knows? Among the peoples of this great land many have felt lost in time and in place. Some have gone as far as to be lost of soul.... Although most are thought to have been born into this world in a mortal way, no one can be sure. Life is something they have in a way but a torturous joke to them in all others. They live in a sense as they are here and now and having mind and knowledge. They are flesh and blood of one sort of another. They cast a shadow as all things living do. Blood courses through their veins. These beings have become wraiths drifting here and there, knowing that they truly belong nowhere. Searching for that one thing that they seem to be missing or the one thing in them that puts them beyond others. These people have become masters of many things as time seems to have no hold. For not even time can find those that are truly lost. Many of these beings have drifted toward the gladiatorial games. In the blood and chaos of the arenas something holds them like no other. It's the loss of something they have never had or something they had so long ago it seems to have never been. LIFE. A few of the more shall we say "human" of these beings have settled into many arenas around the land. The loss of life and the crazed emotions of the arenas giving them glimpses of things they longed for but seemed incapable of attaining. A number of these lost ones saw in each other something that might be able to help the other. They spent many a day traveling to and fro, for what is time to one who it doesn't touch. The more time they spent together the more they seemed to change. No one noticed the change in the others but each recognized it in himself. Years passed and the changes stopped. Each had been changed in different ways but all felt more whole. A discussion ensued between them. They came to a realization that in each other they had found parts of themselves that had been missing. Then came the next thought. If they could find more of like minded lost ones they might eventually find what they always wanted, their true selves. The group settled down to think things through. They finally came up with an idea they all could accept. They would form an organization that through their arenas through out the land they would seek out other lost ones. If they were of like mind they would be invited to join the group and seek that special something they all desired. This was how it began and how it still is. The Order of Lost Souls was formed and the search began. The original members numbered six. They were Baphomet, Blackstorm, Hammer, JGW, Reaper and Wretch. These members of the Order spread their gladiator stables through out the realm seeking others like them. Through blood and death they lived through others. One day hoping to live for themselves. For as they all know what is lost must eventually be found.... 28 January 2008 CALLING ALL THUGS, BRUTES, OGRES, QUARTER HALF WITS, SHALLOW HALBERD ENTHUSIASTS AND MAUL RATS: Since the Bashing style has often been maligned in the forums, it is time to give the style a little tough love with the following concept: An ALL-BASHER arena.
