It is usually a good time as those of us who are retired put those who are still sweating it out through their training. At least it is fun until one of them smacks you upside the head with the flat of their blade. Practice or not, that stings. But that is another story. I was watching the practice when the newest graduate from the squad brought me a letter from our manager. I knew he was out of town checking on the basic arenas, so a letter wasn't a big shock. Still, it probably meant he had some sort of mission for me. I assumed it would be helping train some of the novices at some out of the way arena. The end of my free time here at the Isle, probably. There was no sense putting it off, so I opened it and read: Dimetreas, As you know, we have a mission. We all need to do our part to help make this happen. Right now you are not actively fighting on the Isle and I don't need your special skill set elsewhere. But I do need you on this task. The mission needs you. "Oh great," I thought, as I paused in my reading. "He's trying to sell me on this one. Is it that bad? What did he get me into? Is he sending me to Snowbound or something?" I'm going to start up a squad called the Nonsuch House. Yeah, it is sort of an odd name, but I hope it will be fitting. And I want you to manage it for me. The team will be in Telorinthe. Yes, the slow no-tourney arena. Avoiding the sandbaggers should help out. And it is a slow arena, which will hopefully allow us to be able to afford the further out put of gold. And I like the place. I was just there scouting it out--it seems like a good place. It should be strong and stable. I want the team there. And I want you there to manage it. So get yourself to Telorinthe. Stren will meet you there with the recruits. They are an interesting bunch and should benefit from your talents. I expect the team to be on the sands for the next turn. Make it happen. I lowered the letter and stared ahead for a few seconds, not sure how to respond. Telorinthe? A SLOW arena? But I'm not slow and don't want to be. But, I get to manage the squad, and if I'm not going to be fighting here at the Isle, that doesn't seem bad. Maybe. The others seemed to have noticed my glazed look and several came over, snatched the letter from me, read it and laughed. With me, not at me, I'm sure. "Telorinthe? Can you slow down enough for a place like that, Dimetreas?" "Aren't their top teams a bunch of signs about how bad they are and oldies? How tough can a member of AARP really be, anyway?" "Yeah, weren't they dominated by Golden Sombrero? Four strikeouts in one game? And he won a lot?" "Heck, even you can take these guys, Dimetreas!" Okay, so they were on my side, I think. Still, with friends like these. "Uh guys, you do know who runs the Oldies, don't you? I don't think names are everything. Chim--didn't you fight Villiage Idiot once? How'd that go for you?" Okay, so that was sort of a low blow, but I think it was justified. By the end of the day I had my stuff packed and was on my way to Telorinthe. I needed a map for that one as I had no idea where I was going. But I must have found it since here I am. And I would like to introduce my manager's newest stable, the Nonsuch House. Rook, Silverback, Cornelius, Steel Muse and Whitey d'Eagle are the five that I found waiting for me when I arrived in town. It is our hope to bring honor and skill to this arena while learning whatever you might be able to teach us. --Dimetreas, manager-in-residence of Nonsuch House *A couple of turns late, but some stories just get better with age. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. You prayed hard, so I will give you some answers. This is the amassed make-up of the current Oldie Team. Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. NONSUCH HOUSE turned their 5-0-1 turn into a 3rd place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see MORIS NAHR win a fight and gain 15 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, ORRIE POLLAS beat MELANCHOLIA and MELANCHOLIA lost 12 points. You're breakin' my heart. PARALDOXIA challenged TELORINTHE's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And if variety is the spice of life, TELORINTHE may be getting bland, as CONFESSION stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, TELORINTHE? My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start talking.' I loved that woman. OLLIS HEROES, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And it looks like ZEITGEIST avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. PARALDOXIA was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. LETTER SWEATER was challenged by one of ZEITGEIST's warriors this turn, with GUSHAN having a lead of 25 points going into the fight. And golly gee, GUSHAN subdued LETTER SWEATER. Aren't we all surprised and impressed? Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's see if anyone's dead or dying. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? There's got to be a better place in TELORINTHE to get a drink than The Swinging Aardvark! Any suggestions? Well, I've had enough of this drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather.
