The Broken Chain, tavern of choice for the arena standbys, was doing its usual
roaring business, and roaring was the word for it.
"Salgreid promised us plenty of work!" Galbro d'Maran roared. He fought under
the title of Ambitious Guard when he had a chance to fight at all. "Where is that
work? How am I going to get ahead, make a name and a fortune for myself, if I don't
get out on the sands?"
Kaor Steelbone, the Not-from-Khalhums Dwarf, curled a lip in scorn. Despite his
heavy facial hair, the sneer was unmistakable. "A name for yourself as easy meat?"
He laid his steel-shod warhammer on the table, stroking the haft. "Do you forget how
your last attempt to 'make a name' turned out?"
The barroom went silent. The duel, fought after hours, between the Guard and
the Dwarf was not something any of them were going to forget in a hurry. Nor the
fury of Arenamaster Salgreid, who broke it up before Kaor finished whittling the
Guard down dwarf-height. A few of them looked around nervously to make sure that
their half-orc Arenamaster was not sitting quietly in some corner.
     M. Serlioneth Chardinee, Telorinthe's representative of that reclusive but wide-
spread Society, tipped a little more brandy into his glass. "There is work enough as
a trainer of gladiators, if you aren't too proud to take the work."
Someone in a dark corner giggled nervously. Galbro had been heard to make
disparaging comments about trainers, sparring partners, and 'wannabes'. Disparaging,
and reckless. Kaor wasn't the only high-ranked standby to end up fighting the Guard.
The Veteran Mercenary, the Venomous Concubine, and even the golem Dangerous Criminal
had taken their turns. Plus, everyone was sure that Salgreid knew what was going on
and had chosen, for some inscrutable reason, to keep silent. For now. Most of them
were still waiting for the other steel-toed boot to drop on that.
"You need a better... patron," a voice whispered. "A worthy god to bessstow
favor on you."
If the room had been quiet before, it was now gripped in absolute stillness.
Many recognized Vilishizar of the Mysterious Cult (not the cult that sent Cult
Members into the arena, but a rival group), and his reputation was dark, sinister
without being specific.
Galbro turned to look toward the cultist's corner. He could see nothing there,
of course, but it was always better to face the shadows than turn one's back on them.
"I've no use for gods," he said. "They've never done anything for me--"
"Becausse you have prayed to the wrong onesss," Vilishizar whispered. "If you
will come by our Outer Fane tonight--"
The tavern's outer door opened, letting in a gust of rain-washed air. "I have
been looking for you, Vilish," Arenamaster Salgreid said. The sound of steel on
leather as he drew his sword sent patrons diving out of his path.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

So you guys must have liked my recital? Somehow it landed me in first place--or
DM, as we call it here in Telorinthe. For a little trivia, I will add that at my
very first real recital I played "In The Garden".
For those of you who don't know me, I reside in a brown carrying case that looks
a little like a suitcase with a handle and two spring, lockable, locks. Personally,
I am metallic red with a lot of gold trim. I have the normal white and black
keyboard, and my 120 bass black buttons are on a white background. I have five
metallic stars and a gold lion logo on my visible body, along with two or three small
dents. I have four gold keys which allow me to convert from Master to Organ to
Celest to Clarinet. I have a rather large leather black with white trim strap.
Many years ago I won second place ($15.00) in a 4-H Fair talent contest, playing
a home-made jazzy version of "Sail Along Silvery Moon." That was the extent of my
"winning" until I entered the Telorinthe arena.
I hope I can stay here to entertain you. Don't kill the music!
                 Accordion, DMII

                                      SPY REPORT

Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for TELORINTHE. MVP award for CRACKER JACKS?
OLDIES' proud of him after beating MORIS NAHR and getting 19 points. Talk about yer
major upsets! MORIS NAHR's match with CRACKER JACKS cost him a loss of 16 points!
This Duelmaster is like something else! ACCORDION stopped ORRIE POLLAS dead in his
tracks! Who was the wiseguy that said TELORINTHE's Duelmaster was paying for drinks
at The Swinging Aardvark? Don't look at me!
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. MIDDLE WAY 21
was the most avoided team. Is a 80-75-3 record really that scary? I don't know what
OLDIES' been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from MIDDLE
WAY 21, that's fer sher. Like, is RA popular, or what? He was challenged the most
in all of TELORINTHE! He's got a 4-2-0, is that good?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All TELORINTHE ever talks about is fighting!
Me, I'm more laid back. SVEN really fought hard against CONTRACT BRIDGE. That'll
teach OLDIES not to go and kill any of SUDDENLY, THE VAN's guys again, huh! What if
they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really
should stop. Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

Congrats to Orrie Pollas, a fine athlete, MVP, and Lord Protector. -- Coach and The

Quita Remming -- I must have left you breathless. What else is a squeeze-box for? --

Shu -- I guess you could say I trumped you. -- Contract Bridge

Orrie Pollas -- You were too much for me. Salute. But did you have to take the
surprise out of the box? Wasn't I enough to digest? -- Cracker Jacks

Morris Nahl -- Thanks for being my last in DM. Perhaps we will meet later on in ADM
and I will har your confession? -- Confession

Ahti -- Well, that was pretty enduring, wasn't it? -- Life Scout

Coach -- I had intended to count myself in, but finding the time is a problem.
Still, I should have SOMETHING today. -- Jorja

Cracker Jacks -- For that unkind characterization, fie on you! -- Quita Remming

Accordion -- (blush) -- Karin Lo

Confession -- I survived, and accidents do happen. -- Orrie Pollas

The fans have loved me all along, which shows their good taste. But now I'm leaving.
Well, leaving the job, I may hang around town, I hear there could be interesting
doings. -- Orrie Pollas

Orrie -- Ha. They may have considered you "overall popular," but *I* am the
favorite. -- Moris Nahl

Accordion -- How quickly you change your focus! Last time you called Karin your
favorite squeeze, but now you're after me. -- Quita Remming
P.S. I suppose it would help prevent fickleness if we didn't keep graduating, but,
frankly, we're glad of it--the graduations, not the fickleness.

Cracker Jacks -- You aren't on my diet, but sometimes I just have to splurge. --
Orrie Pollas
P.S. If you don't mind being seen with me in public, I'll buy you a creme soda.

Confession -- We're all incredibly glad you're leaving. You make us uncomfortable.
-- Moris Nahr

Berthold -- You're just jealous because I'm taller than you are. -- Sam Tall

Thoth -- I'm thinking this is a good beginning. Thank you. -- Melanie Obern

Sven and Sanger -- This is racial prejudice is what it is. You guys, all hoity-toity
over being Van and all--who cares about that, anyway? The Van vanished, and good
riddance. Anway, you got no right to go casting SLURS at orcs. We're as good as
anybody, and better than some. -- Geroge Lok and Hager Kroz, nominally captured Orcs

Ra -- You manager, or maybe his accountant, shorted you. Fine. Be angry about it.
But there's no call to take it out on ME. I don't do the New Math. -- Sestin Korrow,
official Embezzling Scribe

Ra -- Don't you listen to that Sestin! He'll steal your teeth right out of your
mouth. -- Derzil or'Kaina, runner-up for the Embezzling Scribe position and a true
artist with a pen
P.S. I wonder if I could get a position as a Recognized Forger?
