TEAM SPOTLIGHT
"Are we there yet?"
Riff-Raff rolled his eyes for perhaps the millionth time. His immortal, recently
retired fellow travelers were not adapting well to their new circumstances. The fact
that they were attempting to travel incognito -- and thus decidedly not First Class --
only made matters worse. Over the years, White Lion and (especially) Wailin' Van
Halen had become accustomed to travelling with an entourage, a business manager, a
personal assistant, a nutritionist and a personal chef, as well as an intern or two
whose only job was to cater to their every whim. Now it was just the three of them,
on a long dusty trip to parts unknown.
"Almost," Riff-Raff promised insincerely, knowing that would only mollify his
charges temporarily.
The trip had started out well enough. East from the Isle of the Eye to the
Yuppie Horde guild house in Chimlevtal, the group had travelled on the Trump
Gladiatorial Enterprises' fully loaded stage coach. Nicknamed "The Beast," it had
everything: Padded seats, full bar, hot meals, beautiful travel attendants. Travel
accomodations that would have been the envy of any Alastarian Noble were business-as-
usual for the two gladiators.
Upon arrival, after a full body massage, a seven course meal, and a bottle of
hundred-year old Ardiventi Fire Whiskey, the three were led into Trump's personal
office.
*** *** ***
"This Chaos Gate thing is very bad. Bad for business, bad for morale.
Eventually, our customers are going to be looking for a safer vacation destination."
Riff-Raff nodded. Being in Trump's presence was always a little unnerving for
him. It wasn't the orange glow radiating from Trump's face, or the gravity-defying
waterfall effect of his carefully coiffed hair. It wasn't even the small army of
security that travelled with him; Riff-Raff, no stranger to a scrap during his time in
the gladiator games figured he could take two, perhaps three of the former Arena
Masters / Spy Masters / Mountain Trolls et cetera that Trump employed, but there were
more, always more, and if there was no gain for him, why try it?
No, it was the "Don't touch that!" nature of EVERYTHING that Trump surrounded
himself with. Everything was the best, the most expensive, the most antique. Riff-
Raff felt transported back to his childhood, secretly waiting for his Grandmother's
knuckle rap as he inevitably did something he wasn't previously aware was
unacceptable. So Riff-Raff sat stiffly, uncomfortably on the overstuffed chair facing
Trump, trying to strike the right tone of honesty and loyalty.
"The Lord Protectors closed the gate in Primus," Riff-Raff nodded towards White
Lion and Wailin' Van Halen. "These two were put on alert, but not even activated.
There's no danger..."
"Wrong... wrong... wrong..." Trump slowly raised his volume, eventually talking
over the long-time manager's comments. "The danger is REAL! You're being extremely
passive and naC/ve when it comes to the dangers of the Chaos Gates." Riff-Raff met
Trump's gaze coolly, calmly. "I'm sorry, Riff-Raff, but you need to go back to
school."
Trump snapped his fingers and an aide rolled down a map of Alastari. Gesturing to
an area east and south of the map, Trump smiled. "Telorinthe. That's going to be the
new vacation spot for the elite seeking to get away. It's got everything, or it soon
will. And it's secluded; it's not even on the map! Two-thirds of the buildings are
empty, and the economy is looking for a shot in the arm."
Trump's smile now changed to a frown. "But they can't know it's me who wants to
buy, to renovate, to build. That'll only drive up the price. So from here on out,
you're simple travelers." He handed Riff-Raff a map of the area, rolled up into a
scroll. "My team has marked out the area we want to develop, in Common Town, east of
the arena. There's an informal alliance there now, inhabiting the area. They're
connected, too; I can't just force them out. I doubt I could buy them out, even if I
wanted to. No, I need your best espionage work."
Riff-Raff frowned. It had been a while since he'd had to do more than threaten
or bribe; he would have to go back to his roots this time. Letting Trump down was not
an option.
*** *** ***
"Am I the only one tired of those damned bells already?" Wailin' Van Halen
pulled the fur-lined hood over his head, his long blonde locks dripping water down his
back. He shivered from the chill.
The group walked south, following the winding of the Nhirivin River, opposite the
current. Every hour, now louder and louder, they could hear the bells ring in the
approaching city. The river ran north to the southern coast of the great Storm Sea,
where the three had just endured an unexpected seven day journey. Neither Wailin' nor
White Lion expected to get sea sick, but the ship had hit rough weather (or, as the
ship's captain called it, "a squall") and been forced to skirt the storm adding days
to their journey. Portage didn't offer the usual amenities they were used to, so the
pair took out their foul mood on Riff-Raff, the only one of their group who'd thought
ahead and purchased a motion sickness cure prior to boarding.
The path sloped sometimes gently down into the fan-shaped valley where Telorinthe
was located. They passed over a low rise, and finally the city came into view, below
them. The group found a dry spot under a spreading tree, and Riff-Raff unrolled their
map out on a broad rock.
"The city center," Riff-Raff pointed to the tall, narrow spires of High Town.
"That's the seat of the city government. Elves." He wrinkled his nose. "We need to
avoid their long-winded debates and love of bureaucracy. I doubt we could buy our way
onto the Council of the Four Estates, and King Jesselorne rarely follows their advice,
anyway."
"The Bourgeoisie," now Riff-Raff pointed to the sprawling stone estates that were
built in an expanding circle of streets, parks and manors, around and facing High
Town. "That's the local merchant class. They're wealthy, for this town. Reportedly,
they are excellent negotiators. If they found out we have deep pockets, the prices
for everything go up."
"The Commons." Riff-Raff indicated, well, everything else. Most of the city was
dark. "Abandoned, home to more birds than people," Riff explained. "Except for," and
here he tapped an area on the map to the east of High Town and the Bourgeoisie.
Looking up, they could see the Gladiator Arena as it gleamed like a lighthouse in the
dark night. And scattered around it, the guild houses of the local teams.
*** *** ***
The Silver Eel Tavern was crowded. Loud. Raucous. Situated near the arena, it
was a melting pot for local culture. Elves, humans, dwarves and orcs all rubbed
elbows. Perfect for planning the next stage of the Telorinthe Takeover, Riff-Raff
thought. If the tables were closer together than he preferred, Riff-Raff took solace
in the fact that they had apparently managed to sneak in undetected, and even scout
the neighborhood where the guild houses were built. If only he could get his two
charges to focus, and take their mission seriously.
In fact, Riff-Raff had kept the exact details of their mission to himself, unsure
of how well the two gladiators could keep a secret (or perhaps too sure of their
inability to keep a secret). So he'd told half of the truth to one, and half to the
other. That way he could identify where the leak came from, when and if it happened.
"They should call their alliance Furrious," White Lion laughed, and took a long
swig of brown Telorinthe ale, wiping his mouth clean with the back of hand. "Or Furr-
ocious."
Wailin' Van Halen leaned in, shouting over the din. "Two problems, we're still
not sure exactly how or even if they're affiliated with each other. And shouldn't the
alliance name mention the dragons?"
"Dragons?!?" White Lion screamed as he stood up abruptly, sending the wooden
chair he was sitting on rocketing into the fireplace like a magic missile; sparks flew
and those nearby scattered. The whole room went quiet.
Riff-Raff tossed the innkeeper a bronze coin, hoping it wasn't too much, and
apologized for the chair. He tossed a silver coin, and ordered the house a round.
That returned the place to the normal commerce.
White Lion wagged his finger at Riff-Raff. "No one ever said anything about
dragons!"
"They're little," Riff-Raff assured him, bringing his hands together until they
were shoulder width apart. "No bigger than cats. By the time we're done, we might
take one back to Trump to have as a pet."
White Lion looked unconvinced, and his buddy Wailin' Van Halen couldn't resist
ribbing his partner.
"You're worried about dragons? Fool! House of Fur would love nothing more than
to stuff your sorry hide and display it in their great room."
White Lion smiled. "I'd like to see them try. I could use the exercise. I'll
tell you what, Wailin', we need to figure what the heck NFL stands for -- and what a
Network is. I'll bet Channel Master has something tricky up his sleeve! We don't
want to be surprised."
A movement caught Riff-Raff's attention, a hooded figure walking swiftly toward
the door. Turning for one last look back at the three seated near the fire, Riff-
Raff's stomach knotted; it was Nemesis.
The Furious Five's manager grimaced as their eyes met, then turned and dashed out
the door and down the street before Riff-Raff could react.
He shook his head; how much had they heard?
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Well, there's a surprise team out of the past of Telorinthe. Welcome back to Nonsuch
House. We remember Rook and Behemoth well as a stable, though not with the current
generation of Bad Signs. Since Rook has a history of defeating the venerable Lump of
Bad Signs, I, personally, will be avoiding Rook. But as to the rest of the team,
everything is up for grabs.
Last turn, Grogan Da Troll taught me a parry skill, and this gave me an Advanced
Expert rating in Parry. Again, to follow on to last week's speech from the throne,
you would think this would be sufficient to classify me as a highly skilled warrior,
ready and able to advance to the next level of dueling. But, here's the secret, you
have to be able to do more than one thing well. If someone would be kind enough to
teach me 2-4 Defence skills, then Bad Signs would host a farewell party in my honour.
That would be the easiest way to get rid of me. Either that or knock me off the
throne, or wait another 8 fights.

5-time Duelmaster of Telorinthe
SPY REPORT
It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! THE DRAGONS? Who? KAME HOUSE is the top team these days, buddies! He
who laughs last didn't get the joke. Speaking of laughing at jokes, observe
WETWORKS. Last week they got 0-0-0 to drop by 6! What's a move up by 6 you ask?
(alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to KAME HOUSE.
Practice pays for PUKEI, who pummelled WAR STORM, to pocket 15 points. Win some,
lose some. Speaking of which, PUKEI was winsome, after beating WAR STORM and seeing
him lose 13 points. You could cut the tension with a scimitar as ROOK of NONSUCH
HOUSE met the Duelmaster. In TELORINTHE, nothing is permanent (except Death), and we
find ourselves a new Duelmaster, ROOK. So who was the warrior seen charging into
immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic problem...
So much to report, so little time! Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the
mountaintops, so stand the warriors of NONSUCH HOUSE, alone and unchallenged. As a
woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of NFL NETWORK, so did that sorry team
shy from NONSUCH HOUSE Is it charming personality? Conversational abilities? Good
oral hygiene? Whatever it is, WHIRLED is the most challenged warrior. As a
confidence booster, HEAT WAVE challenged HARLEY, down 20 points. Do you also slay
vicious rodents in your spare time, HEAT WAVE? Yes, Virginia, sometimes the little
guy wins, as HARLEY proved, beating 20 point higher HEAT WAVE. Take heed TELORINTHE,
of the unprincipled action of DAWN. By challenging SKY, 17 points below her, DAWN
besmirches the noble art of dueling. Warriors of TELORINTHE! Do you wish your
reputations tainted by the base challenge of DAWN? WHIRLED challenged HIRED BY
TRUMP! Who says ENDLESS are just a bunch of wimps! WHIRLED of ENDLESS kept his wits
as he was subdued by HIRED BY TRUMP.
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Like a tattered,
worn-out, faded, out-of-fashion garment cast out to rot, STONED TROLL of CONJURE UP
THE SUN has been summarily sent to the Dark Arena. Ask not for whom the sword
slashes; it slashes for thee.
All good things must come to an end. More important duties call me.
TELORINTHE, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The
Dripping Blade. 'Til next time-- Novgorodny Vir

BLOODGAMES at the WINTER FACE-TO-FACE
Congratulations to the winners of the Winter 2019 Bloodgames!
We held two Bloodgames arenas at the Winter Face to Face:
FTF-Style (DM 96): for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies
Mail-in-Style (DM 97): for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds
Each manager's Bloodgames team had ten warriors, one of each style, all attributes
according to the manager's desire (84 points total). After ten rounds of brutal
battles, the Bloodgames Champions are the living warriors with the greatest number
of kills (only one of each style in each arena). These champions have been granted
immortality and advanced to ADM! The winners were:
DM 96
Slasher: GEORGE WAHLEN of MEDAL OF HONOR 29 96-6436, 8-2-5
Parry-Lunge: IMA PLUNGER of WIRA TEAM 96-6399, 8-2-5
