Chaos Compass III
Crouched trailside, "A threat, not a greeting." he elucidated in a murmur, and held
her. Through a hole in their shield she peered into the morning mist, and held her
breath.
*********************
Thunder in the fog, the galloping horse reared and snorted into the chill dawn.
Rider's green and gold glove like lightning held high. The mule merchant "I'LL NOT
PAY!!" The royal glove fell whoosh! shadows rained down the hillside onto the wagon
trail.
***********************
"...Uhhhhh?!...." she exhaled peering through one eye, then none. His tears fell onto
her cold cheeks... "To heave, not... Telorinthe..." he elucidated.
*************************
Arrow headstones, fat grave. He cried into the day, "BY DEVIL!!" and held her green
and gold arrow.
*******************************
"Welcome," Queen Artemis said as she gestured for them to follow her. "Welcome to my
domain." Moving quickly, the huntress led them down a twisting alleyway, turning
seemingly at random here and there, until finally she stopped in front of a door that
looked just like every other door they had passed.
Deftly drawing runes in the air, the fur-clothed Queen wrote in the air with her staff
as though on a scroll with disappearing ink, the strange characters hovering briefly,
appearing to burn though giving off no heat, disappearing from view in a flash, the
memory of their presence burning in the retinas of those who looked too closely.
Tapping the door with the end of her staff and uttering a final word of power, Queen
Artemis swept her hand from left to right, parting reality as if it were only a
curtain and revealing an alien landscape beyond. Dragon Master could be seen clearly
on the other side, gesturing in a friendly manner for everyone to join her.
Riff-Raff felt his knees go weak, an old familiar wave of nausea rising up in his gut.
He tried to fight it off, grabbing quickly for the nearest wall, steadying himself as
his pulse pounded in his temple. He squeezed his eyes shut, then opened them slowly,
trying to adapt to the power he could feel pulsing all around him. "That," Riff-Raff
stammered, jabbing his index finger at the unnatural vortex, "that is a Chaos Gate!"
The very air around the Gate seemed to shimmer, the colors phasing through every hue
of the rainbow, sometimes teasing others that could only be felt, tasted. Riff-Raff
had the sense he was standing on top of a high precipice, and the very height pulled
at his being, daring him to jump. The Gate called out to Riff-Raff, daring him to
enter, compelling him to move. The manager stepped back, reeling involuntarily, the
pit of his stomach feeling like it hit the ground and rebounded to lodge in his
throat. The portal swirled before him, the variegated border making him dizzy, sick to
the pit of his being.
As Riff-Raff felt his consciousness start to fade to black, strong hands grabbed him
and pulled him through. This was somehow even worse than merely being in the Gate's
presence. Through the mental fog, Riff-Raff felt a great vast emptiness engulf him,
and briefly he felt weightless, seemingly floating until a tug began pulling him
faster -- and harder -- through wherever he was. Now he was falling at breakneck
speed toward a vast, swirling, hot (so very hot!) nothingness that terrified him with
its darkness.
Riff-Raff began to feel stretched, as if somehow the pull on his feet were stronger
than his head as he fell. Soon he felt as though he was longer and thinner than
humanly possible, almost as though every atom of his being was pulled into a long thin
piece of spaghetti. Time was impossible to gauge; he felt as though he had been
falling forever and perhaps he would never reach a destination and then SNAP! He was
back in his original form (or a reasonable facsimile), wretching up the bangers and
mash he had enjoyed for dinner.
"I should have warned you," Queen Artemis patted his back. "Some experience nausea
the first time-"
"This is NOT my first time!" Riff-Raff pushed her hand away roughly, and stood up. He
immediately regretted the action, and fell to the ground again. He stared daggers at
White Lion and Wailin Van Halen. "Why aren't you two sick?"
Wailin shrugged, "I'm immortal. I guess it's one of the perks." White Lion smacked
himself in the chest and smiled, "Aruaki Werecat."
Riff-Raff focused his gaze on Queen Artemis now. "You!" The Huntress just stared back
blankly, as if to say "Me what?" "You manipulated a Chaos Gate! That can only
mean..." Riff-Raff took a step back, wanting some space now. "You're a Chaos Witch!"
Dragon Master giggled, jumping up and down and clapping her hands. "You're going to
be in so much trouble when your Dad finds out!" Queen Artemis shot her a look that
took much of the mirth out of the situation for the younger manager. She slunk behind
White Lion for safety.
Riff-Raff shoved his way past White Lion and Wailin Van Halen, and peered over the
high cliff they now stood on to the tableau below. The sky was a neon green, now
fading to reds, blues and yellows as two suns set below the far horizon and a giant
moon rose behind them into the sky. A verdant valley was below, it's v-shaped sides
covered with vegetation. At the bottom, a wide river wound its way toward the horizon.
"Where are we?"
"I don't really know." Queen Artemis moved beside him and surveyed the valley below.
Riff-Raff could see now that they stood on an outcropping of rock that thrust itself a
hundred feet or so horizontally, perhaps half a mile above the valley floor below.
The view, if alien, was incredible. "Channel Master found it. Or created it, maybe.
He's a Shadow Walker. He brought me here, and I created the passage. From Telorinthe
to wherever Here is."
"That 'passage,' as you call it, is a wormhole. A tear. A rending of the fabric of
the universe. Every one I've seen one -- and I've seen too many in my lifetime --
have always attracted demons from beyond the Pale." Riff-Raff gazed seriously at Queen
Artemis. "This is no trivial matter; you don't understand the forces you're playing
with."
"JJ, tell this guy to lighten up!" Riff-Raff jumped and turned quickly, unaccustomed
to be snuck up on so easily. Channel Master smirked at him, enjoying the moment. "Why
is everyone so tense lately? Relax!"
Channel Master strode quickly, closing the gap, striding until he stood a half a pace
from the grizzled veteran manager. "You don't know, do you?" Taking his index finger,
Channel Master jabbed it directly into the older man's chest. "You came all the way
here, and you don't even know what you've found, do you?"
"You want me to teach this whelp some manners?" White Lion picked up Channel Master by
the scruff of his neck, lifting him easily into the air as the young manager suddenly
lost most of his gravitas. Legs kicking futilely, Channel Master tried unsuccessfully
to wriggle out of White Lion's iron grip.
"Put him down!" White Lion dropped the child prodigy, who rubbed his neck ruefully
and glared at JJ Watt as if to say, why are you here anyway? The young warrior
shrugged apologetically.
Riff-Raff dusted the young man off, putting his arm around the young man's shoulders
and pulling him close. "Help me understand."
Channel Master glared at Riff-Raff, clearly trying to decide how much information he
needed to divulge. "Telorinthe is special." He rubbed his neck, glaring daggers at
White Lion. "It's why we're here. It's why we will never sell, no matter how much
money you offer."
"Do you know how many 'special' places we've bought recently?" Wailin' Van Halen
scoffed. "Everyone has a price."
"Perhaps we should include Nemesis in this conversation?" Everyone turned to look at
Dragon Master, who now stood on a rock so she could be eye to eye with her older
conversation mates. "Maybe she can explain it? Why we are here; what we are doing;
and why you need to join us."
SPY REPORT
SCREEEECH!! It is time again for the Telorinthe spy report! I am your spy
reporter, Ori Starbloom, and I hope to tell you about all the exciting action that has
happened this turn. I have to warn a few of you, it has been a deadly turn. A few of
our fighters did not come back from the arena! I have wept all afternoon! Maybe you
guys and gals should hold back a little in the future! It is getting rough on this
young lady's heart to report these things every turn.
ROOK! ROOK! ROOK! That is what the crowds were chanting today as the arena
opened. Rook became our Duelmaster last turn and the audience had to wait an entire
28 days to see their champion fight again. The time did not do anything to dampen
their excitement. Rook faced Hurricane Season in a random match-up for the title. It
took 2 minutes, but it did not appear to be that close as Rook defeated Hurricane
Season a mismatched fight. ROOK! ROOK! ROOK! The crowd hasn't lost any of its
fervor! Congrats to Rook once again and to his manager Nomad!
The most avoided team is the absent Conjure the Sun. Kame House avoided them the
most. I would wager you will see these two teams frequently in this section of the
Spy Report, especially considering their war of words in the personal ads. The most
challenged warrior is Vicious Venom from The Ferocious Five. Despite all the
challenges, VV matched up with A Smoking Woman in a random fight. You managers must
see something that I do not because Vicious Venom is now 7-2-1 after defeating A
Smoking Woman and isn't showing any signs of slowing down after the win.
Okay, now to the part of the report I dread! I hate reporting on death! I am an
elf and I love life. Every little detail of life is a celebration for me and my clan.
On the other hand, death is not that popular. Don't get me wrong, I do not fear
death, I just do not like it. I will start at the top of my dead list. Sugarloaf, oh
what a wonderful name, has fought one last time in Telorinthe! Greg Olsen shortened
Sugarloaf's career. I tried reaching out to NFL Network's management for a comment,
but all I got was a "don't call us, we'll call you," response. I also tried reaching
out to NFL Network after the next two deaths in the arena, but got the same response.
Channel Master's crew killed one, but lost two of their own in the fights. We bid
farewell to DeShaun Watson and De'Andre Hopkins. DeShaun was killed in a bloodfeud by
Grogan Da Troll, while De'Andre was killed by his own challenge against Detention.
There have been 7 regular arena deaths over the last 3 turns. Condolences for the
losses! Oh, now I am sad again!
There were no new graduates this turn, but we say goodbye to Mother-in-Law. I am
still compiling all the data for this arena, so I do not have any nifty facts to share
with you about graduates and such. Soon! Very soon!
Congrats Queen Artemis and House of Fur for holding onto the top team once again.
I hope to see each of you back next turn! We will see if Rook can hold onto the
throne and is he about to get an invite to the Isle of the Eye and immortality? Join
us to find out!

Sir Prise -- Getting matched up against someone of my particular style on your first
fight? Surprise, indeed! -- Heat Stroke
Sky -- Ah, well fought, young Slasher. It is often difficult to win two fights in a
row against a superior opponent. Some overconfident troll must've told you
otherwise. My manager also says that you are too big in size for your style. Most
of the time big slashers don't do so well. The stars indicate that you will continue
to struggle until your untimely demise. I'm sorry, you are cursed. Perhaps, the Dark
Arena will be a better option? They say that nobody ever really dies there. Or was
it, that it happens so fast you hardly feel any pain at all? No matter, have a good
day, my cursed young fellow! -- Heat Wave
Vicious Venom -- You just refused to go down and with grim determination you imposed
your will upon me. -- Dawn
P.S. You slapped me silly!
