SPY REPORT
I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. TELORINTHE needs a spyreport." Oh, well. NFL NETWORK like
really fought hard to move up to 2nd from 5th. Way to go! MVP award for SKY? THE
DRAGONS' proud of her after beating ICE MAN and getting 17 points. Talk about yer
big time losers! ICE MAN got smashed by SKY, and lost 12 points! Like KAME HOUSE's
GUILFORD is sweating since it got Bloodfeuded by Duelmaster CAM NEWTON! Don't you
think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think CAM NEWTON should let GUILFORD be
Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. Is the Duelmaster really being a
real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. SCORPIO'S LIKES: was TELORINTHE's most avoided team. Is there some
award for that? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are QUEEN'S GUARD? SCORPIO'S LIKES:,
an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation!
Like, is WINDSHEAR popular, or what? She was challenged the most in all of
TELORINTHE! She's got a 6-3-0, is that good?
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you?
Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. I had
a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

A Day in the Life of a Spy Reporter, Part 1
SYP Special
Author Uncredited
The workday begins before sunrise in the small arena city of Telorinthe. A short
magical phrase from a high, feminine voice causes a hand-sized crystal on a bronze
pedestal to illuminate the room. A small, elven girl emerges from a single bed with a
straw-stuffed mattress. Stretches begin her day once she is upon the wooden floor.
The bed is adorned with a beautiful woven blanket adorned with a red and white chevron
pattern. The craftsmanship of the blanket looks out of place in the room.
The Telorinthe spy reporter lives in a modest, sparsely furnished apartment over the
local Yellow Press offices. When asked about the arrangement, Ori Starbloom says, "My
family's property is miles from the town. I do not have to live here, but it makes it
so much more convenient for working in and around the city." She opens the door to a
pitcher filled with fresh water, a small block of cheese, and a bread heel. After
pouring water into a small wooden cup, she sips it and nibbles at the food.
Her attention is on a pile of scrolls laying haphazardly on a corner table. She sips
and puts food to her mouth mechanically. I'm certain I could replace the food and
drink with anything, and she would not notice the change. Her eyes dart up and down
the scrolls. Gladiatorial Commission clerks, couriers, and golems have worked
tirelessly throughout the week to gather all of the pertinent information for the
upcoming games. Ori reads each scroll quickly, going through the pile at a quickened
pace.
When she reaches the final page, she jumps from the chair and pulls on a pair of soft
leather boots. She runs a bone comb through her hair before she ties it off in a high
top-knot. The elf leaves the room with a purpose. In the same clothing she fell
asleep in the previous night, she heads downstairs to the Yellow Press offices.
They are cold, dark, and quiet. Ori grabs a few logs from a pile and throws them into
the cast iron stove that heats the office. She quickly starts a fire, a skill she has
mastered made apparent with the ease in which she performs the task. A soft glow
begins to dance off of old wooden desks. Stacks of papyrus, paper, and scroll cases
cover desks and large areas of the floor. Except for magical enchantments protecting
the building, a stray spark from the stove could turn it all to ash in moments.
With the fire burning bright, the first rays of the morning shoot through the office
windows. Slowly workers begin to file into the office. As they arrive, Ori dashes
upstairs to grab her cloak and then out the door. Her enthusiasm for the task ahead
can be seen in her gait. She is like a child sprinting to a confectioner's shop.
Small and nimble, she weaves through the growing rush of people in the streets. It is
difficult to keep up with her, but her destination is clearly the arena on the north
side of the city.
A noticeable spring in her step, almost like a child skipping, appears as we get
closer to the arena. Ori's bubbling personality speaks to every stranger she passes.
Immediately out of the Yellow Press offices, people grunt or ignore the high-pitched
"Good morning!" from the elf lass. As we near the arena, people are much more
receptive. "Good morning, Ori!" is heard more frequently. A few of the shopkeepers,
human and otherwise, even stop their work to hug the young lady as she slows and takes
the time to engage them.
"Ori is just a wonderful young lass," Herrold the Baker tells me. "She is always so
upbeat and every day she stops in to see me and the wife on her way to the arena. It
is great to have people like her around, especially with the tough crowd the arenas
can attract at times!" This is the sentiment from nearly every shop keeper on the
lane leading to the arena. Ori has become such a welcome sight to many of them. They
look for her in the morning, sometimes in the evenings, and dote on her like
grandparents. I appreciate the irony, though sweetness, of these relationships since
Ori is 80 years old. The long-lived elves do not show their true age, even after
centuries.
Even with the stops and delays, our spy reporter is one of the first non-gladiators to
the Telorinthe arena. She checks in with the Arenamaster for the fight docket before
she makes her way to the Yellow Press office in the arena. Another stack of paper is
waiting for her from the main office in Shadowspire. Reports, rumors, and innuendo
from various sources make their way to Ori's desk. She is new to spy reporting, but
wise enough to sift through the information and discern fact from fiction according to
her colleagues.
"Ori is a sweetheart with a sharp wit!" Sidara Brightbell, senior spy reporter and
Ori's mentor, purrs. "She can sniff out a lead with these gladiators quicker than any
I have seen before. She is such a darling! I'm glad Phineas gave her a shot."
After absorbing all the data, Ori hangs up her cloak and heads for the gladiator pens.
The elf says interacting with the warriors is her favorite part of the job. "You meet
so many people from different parts of Alastari. I love the games because it doesn't
matter who or what you were in the streets. Everyone gets a fair shake in the arena.
Rich or poor, human, elf, werecat, or Shew, it really doesn't matter. The question
isn't what are you, but how well can fight?"
