RIFF-RAFF CREW
"Those things you own end up owning you."
Trump shook his head and frowned. "Don't be ridiculous."
In high dudgeon, Trump looked up from the slowly spinning 3D map of Alastari that
hovered between the two men. "Look at everything I own." He motioned to the intern
who stood off the side. "Show me the Trump hotels," and with a word and a flick of
the wrist, several bright gold buildings appeared like shining stars all over the map.
"Now show me the Trump Condominiums," and again bright little symbols appeared --
silver now -- pulsing in the night. Avarice reflected in Trump's eyes like the love a
young child has for their first pet.
"Your philosophers' words have no power over me, Riff-Raff. You of all people
should know that. I'm the smartest man that ever was, smartest that ever shall be.
If there's a thought I haven't thought of yet, well it's not worth thinking."
Pausing, Trump smiled and turned to his intern. "That was good, wasn't it?" The
intern nodded yes, emphatically. "Go write that down." The intern turned quickly and
walked a pace, then returned. "I'm illiterate." Probably for the best, Riff-Raff
thought. No record of this conversation meant he wouldn't be defending his role in it
later, whatever that role might be. Trump yelled for a pen and paper, anyway,
summoning his chief of staff whose job now was to transcribe "perfectly" a thought he
hadn't heard.
Riff-Raff took advantage of the distraction to scan the room. Although he had
visited several times, there were nevertheless several things about Trump's personal
office that impressed any visitor. The furniture was well-appointed and expensive.
There were antiques and original paintings. The desk, reproduced in the full-sized
portrait of Trump hanging on the wall behind it, was dark, shiny and impressive in its
bulk. In the right light, even Trump could appear strong and resolute behind that
desk (Riff-Raff himself had witnessed it). There were doors leading to another, even
more private study, and of course there was the bar.
Notwithstanding the fact that Trump never drank a drop himself, still the man
kept a well-stocked bar and it was one of the perks that Riff-Raff enjoyed without
fail at every visit. Riff-Raff smiled to himself as he wandered over. Aruaki Red
Ale? Yes, thank you. Ardiventi Fire Whiskey? I'll take two. The absence of a
bartender didn't dissuade, and Riff-Raff drank his first whiskey shot in the "nice"
fashion of the southerners in Telorinthe. Eyes watering, and chest burning, Riff-Raff
quickly drained his Red Ale and (with ice this time) poured himself another shot and
looked up, catching his boss' eyes. It was clearly time to resume their conversation.
Pausing briefly, Riff-Raff made it a double and sauntered back slowly. "You were
saying?"
Trump paused, trying to recapture the mood of their conversation. Riff-Raff's
wry smile was clearly ruining the moment, so Trump changed gears. Motioning to his
intern, Trump barked, "Show me the new developments underway in Telorinthe." The map
went shone briefly, then went dark. A log fell, causing the fire to roar higher and
the firelight reflected the fury in Trump's eyes as they bore in the very being of his
manager.
"Failure." The word hung like the room like an anvil over Riff-Raff's head.
Riff-Raff paused for a beat, holding Trump's gaze. Two beats, and Trump's eyes
widened. On the third beat, the melting ice in Riff-Raff's glass clinked, distracting
him briefly. He looked down at his glass, "the Chaos Gates...."
"The Chaos Gates!" Trump roared. "Show me the Chaos Gates!"
The fire roared again, lighting the room like a bonfire, and the map exploded
with Chaos Gates shimmering here and there all over Alastari. Some were greater, some
lesser, some bright and some dim, but even the symbol made Riff-Raff's stomach twist
in that old familiar knot. "Show me Telorinthe and the map expanded, slid south and
east, now with three gates blazing in the valley.
"Three?" Riff-Raff was stunned, and his nearly slid to his knees in despair.
All the effects of the pleasant liquor fled him, and he looked up at Trump's face,
stone sober.
"You're going back." Trump turned his back on Riff-Raff, and walked to his desk.
He picked up and shook a folder marked "Top Secret! Riff-Raff Travel to Telorinthe."
Turning back, he indicated the intern. "Igor will give you the itinerary. You leave
tonight."
Riff-Raff had never been more against an idea in his life. Before he could
utter, "over my dead body" (a prophecy he realized Trump could probably have
fulfilled), Trump smiled. It was that look of smug satisfaction, of total control
over a situation, of such raw power that had originally drawn Riff-Raff to the Trump
organization in the first place.
"Your team is already there. We registered them as 'Riff-Raff Crew' and to
change it now would take too long. We can't afford any more delays! So, for the time
being, you get a reprieve." Trump raised his hand in a dismissive manner, then
paused, holding the manager's gaze.
"And Riff-Raff," Trump scowled. "You will not fail me again."

"Driver! Driver!" Riff-Raff hung out the window of the stagecoach, trying to
see the source of the delay. "Why are we stopped? I need to get to my destination
post haste!" Too many days on horseback, on foot, at sea and now in a carriage had
worn down his patience. So close to his destination, the TEABAG manager was ready to
arrive!
The driver looked dispassionately over his right shoulder at his passenger, and
merely pointed upward.
The shadow of the red dragon blocked the sun as it passed slowly overhead, wings
flapping slowly as it glided by, the dragon-eclipse turning the day into night
briefly. Ahead, blocking the street and running as far ahead and behind as Riff-Raff
could see, a long line of mourners passed, some dressed in black, some in panther
blue, and others in silver as they trudged slowly toward the final resting place of
the recent Duelmaster, Cam Newton. They'd driven right into the middle of a funeral
procession.
"Well, that's inconvenient!" Riff-Raff hopped out of the carriage. "Take my
bags to the guildhouse!" The driver nodded, and pulled the brake on the carriage; he'd
be here awhile.
Riff-Raff melted into the crowd.
SPY REPORT
Much has changed in TELORINTHE since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen
adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Biff! Pow! TELORINTHE
watched with glee as NFL NETWORK got knocked off top spot by THE FEROCIOUS FIVE! Up
'n down. Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be...
Well, THE FEROCIOUS FIVE's 1st moved them up to 5-0-0 place. It seems so recently
people were saying QUEEN'S GUARD was washed up, finished. But 4-1-0 moved them up 2.
I guess they're washed no more... Major screwup at KAME HOUSE. PUAR lost 16 points
to MANIAC MAULER. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe PUAR will provide more easy
wins... HAMANU was reminded on the sands why RED DEATH is Duelmaster. Wouldn't it
be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the
uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was SCORPIO'S LIKES:. Management must be dealin', as the boys at
SORCERER KINGS ain't reelin'! SCORPIO'S LIKES:'s mad! What do people see in
GUILFORD? Its 7-9-2? KAME HOUSE ain't talkin', but it's got 32 points. WINDSHEAR
didn't quite know what to make of a challenge she received from SIR CUMBSTANCE of
QUEEN'S GUARD, who is 20 points below her. SIR CUMBSTANCE perhaps got his just
desserts, seeing as he defeated WINDSHEAR and ended up with 33 recognition points.
Warriors of TELORINTHE unite. You have only your games to lose! Many a warrior
has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note!
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
TELORINTHE is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. I don't
