TEAM SPOTLIGHT
"Still the bells ring."
Riff-Raff furrowed his brow, and turned irritably towards Wailin' Van Halen.
"What?"
"That's what they say here in Telorinthe." A cool pre-dawn breeze ruffled their
tunics as the sun crested above the valley walls, and where the new rays landed there
was an explosion of verdant green from the darkness. In the city center the bells
began their mournful cry, ringing their melancholy reminder that another day had
begun. "No matter what happens, the bells ring. 'City of the bells' and whatnot."
"What do they say about chaos gates," Riff-Raff fumed, "and demons turning into
blades?" Wailin' was silent. "Or wounds that won't heal despite the Order's best
attempts? Or..."
"Enough!" White Lion bellowed as he walked out onto the deck, his chest expanding
impressively as he took in a big breath of the cool morning air. "If I can learn how
to ride a dragon, you can learn to stop asking questions that don't have answers."
"So you've learned to ride a dragon, have you?" Riff-Raff eyes watered as he
eyed the retired gladiator, who smelled strongly of brimstone. Despite years of
training, and immortality, White Lion looked more than a little beat up, flame singed,
and more conquered than conqueror. "Are all dragon riders missing their eyebrows? How
far did you make it on Death Bringer before she bucked you off?"
"About 25 feet. And she didn't buck me off, I let go. I could have held on
longer, but wasn't sure I'd survive the fall. The worst part was her coming around
and burning the tree I was climbing down. If she was a little bit older I'd have been
in real trouble. But Dragon Master called it progress, so I guess it's all part of
the process!"
Riff-Raff nodded sagely, but inside he wasn't sure. Why had they even come to
Telorinthe in the first place? The original reasons were so far in the past, they
seemed liked another lifetime.
"Let's get cleaned up. We've got a meeting with the Whiz Kids this morning."
*** *** ***
Once all were assembled -- everyone except Dragon Master who was at the Isle of the
Eye, celebrating Red Dragon's first ADM win -- the meeting began around a large round
oaken table in the Riff-Raff Crew courtyard. At the center of the table, a black
pyramid hovered, rotating slowly in place, cruel ancient runes blazing in a cascade of
colors across its many faces. The black demon blade was in a glass case laying on the
table.
"And this is...?" Riff-Raff pointed. "The tome of knowledge, yes." Nemesis
finished for him.
"Um, I don't know how to say this," Riff-Raff looked around the room. "You were
supposed to bring back a book. A book with answers. And instead we get this," he
gestured in the general direction of the levitating tetrahedron, "whatever this is."
Channel Master closed his eyes and sighed deeply. He leaned back in his chair
and tried to relax. When he opened his eyes and looked around the room, he spoke
slowly, evenly, and carefully choosing his words as if talking to elementary students.
"The world you see isn't real-"
Sir Render slammed the butt of his halberd on the ground, the sound echoing
sharply throughout the chamber. "We don't risk our lives for an illusion!" Around the
room, the Queen's Guard began rhythmically tapping the butts of their weapons on the
hard cobblestones, each strike a little louder and more forceful than the last, until
Channel Master's ears threatened to start ringing. A motion from Queen Artemis and
the Queen's Guard returned to their natural stance, blade held at a slight angle, butt
resting on the ground.
"Don't you go anywhere without them, sister?" The NFL Network manager asked. "Not
anymore," was her reply.
Channel Master started again. "The world you see isn't real. It's a reflection
-- a shadow -- of the true reality that emanates from the Pattern. You think of it as
real because it's all you've ever known, like a citizen of Telorinthe who has never
left the valley. Alastari and Ghea are out there, and you're a part of them, even if
you've never seen them."
"And these demons," Nemesis leaned forward from the head of the table where she
sat, injured foot still wrapped in a protective cast and elevated for proper healing,
"they are part of this reality? They're from a distant shadow?"
"No," Channel Master stated grimly. "They're from somewhere else."
Riff-Raff's head started to hurt. He could feel beads of perspiration on his
forehead, neck and back. Irritable by nature, he wanted answers.
"Where?" He took out a rag and wiped his forehead. "Where are they from? And
how do we kill them? And how do we close the gates? And..."
From across the table, Channel Master's gaze wavered like a reflection in a pool
disturbed by a pebble. Riff-Raff leaned forward, feeling unsteady, and grasped the
table with both hands. "What's happening?"
The black figures landed on all fours in the middle of the table, chittering to
themselves and each other, and launching themselves at anyone nearby. Sir Render
grabbed Queen Artemis and shoved her quickly behind him as the Queen's Guard moved
forward, halberds at ready.
White Lion unstrapped his Battle Axe, and Wailin' Van Halen grabbed a Short Spear
that rested nearby in the corner. Back to back, they fought a trio of demons who bit,
slashed, kicked and spit venom at the pair.
Channel Master somersaulted over the demons, landing on the table and dashing
madly for Nemesis, who sat wide-eyed and immobile in her chair. Grabbing her wrist as
he dashed by and dragging her unceremoniously with him, he shifted shadows and was
gone.
Riff-Raff slumped back into his chair, and slumped and fell and no chair was
there. He felt a pull, a tug, more and more insistent, at the center of his gravity,
accelerating as he fell. He landed with a whump! that knocked the air out of him.
Sitting up, gasping for air, he crawled over to the nearest shade. The muggy heat of
the day assaulted his senses.
Looking up, he was sitting under a sign, on the side of a wide paved road.
"Welcome to Stormcrowe."
SPY REPORT
Greetings, Warriors of TELORINTHE. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to
give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. The boys at
RIFF-RAFF CREW left the arena dejected, after being kicked out of the top spot by THE
FEROCIOUS FIVE. Good show! Say what you will about blind luck and dirty fighting,
but KAME HOUSE will tell you 63-49-4 is nothing to laugh at... The boys at EMPIRE
STRIKES OUT are walking tall, as they are ranked 8th on their first try! Going for
the Duelmaster soon? THE FEROCIOUS FIVE had cause to celebrate, after VICIOUS VENOM
got 25 points by beating GARFIELD. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which,
WINDSHEAR was winsome, after beating MANGO CHUTNEY and seeing her lose 20 points.
What can be a greater victory? BORYS has taken his place as the top, as TELORINTHE's
new Duelmaster. Word has it one team in TELORINTHE is taking speech lessons to try
to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? To quell some nasty rumors, the guys in THE
FEROCIOUS FIVE are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em. As a
woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of HOUSE OF FUR, so did that sorry team
shy from THE FEROCIOUS FIVE If challenges were horses, NIGHTMARE could open up a fast
food joint!
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Death (in the form of VICIOUS VENOM of THE FEROCIOUS FIVE) knocked on
GARFIELD's door. What will HOUSE OF FUR do? The suspense is killing me. I get a
special thrill from seeing innocent boy like RAGE QUIT from RIFF-RAFF CREW get
pointlessly killed. Good show, REESE'S PB! (No mercy.) Ask not for whom the sword
slashes; it slashes for thee.
All good things must come to an end. Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards
fat! Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for TELORINTHE? On
