                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Hello managers in arena 83. I am the manager of Empire Strikes Out. Of course, you
need my manager name. It is (drum roll please) Agent R! If you do not get my team, it
is Star Wars characters with a mix of baseball terms.

As you can figure out, I like Star Wars. I also like The Harry Potter series. I like a
few other books to. I like: The Percy Jackson series, The Trials Of Apollo, and The
Heroes Of Olympus, all of which are made by Rick Riordan. I hope you like books to.

I like sports a bit. Here are my favorite teams for each sport I like.

     Hockey: Ottawa Senators.
     Baseball: Toronto Blue Jays.
     Football: Pittsburgh Steelers.
     Duelmasters: Empire Strikes Out.

See what I did there, I put my own team for Duelmasters. I don't know many teams yet
as I'm new to Duelmasters. Now I have to go and look at my fights (and then make more
strategy sheets for my team), so Bye!

                                          -- Agent R

Stormcrowe, 2 years ago

Darque's estate rested outside the city proper, miles from the city gates on the
southern shore of the island. Surrounded by a thick forest and dangerous denizens,
few people ventured into the area. While the people of Stormcrowe had little to fear
from the half-demon, the wizard enjoyed the mystique and privacy the location afforded
him.

The day started as every other day. A magical bell sounded when the sun broke the
eastern sky. The household steward, Leviticus, awake hours before the alarm directed
the workers and gladiators alike. Much of the staff worked in the kitchens. The most
daunting and expensive aspect of gladiatorial management involved room and board.
Darque, to free himself from such mundane distractions, employed Leviticus to handle
the day-to-day operations in all of his fighting guilds.

The normal routine proceeded without incident until noonday. Gladiators sparred in the
practice yards awaiting the lunch bell. An ornate, ivory colored carriage rolled
eloquently through the front gate and to the front door of the manor. Visitors did
come intermittently to the estate, so the carriage only drew a few side glances from
the men and women warriors practicing by the front gates. Metal clanged against metal.
The thud of steel against a wooden shield added to the morning reverberations. The
carriage door swung open and two children jumped from the interior. The gladiators
froze and a final clash of steel echoed through the area.

Leviticus stood by the front door to greet the mysterious visitors. He did not say a
word but bowed and opened the front door quickly for the children to enter. They
passed the wizened steward with a slight nod and wave of hello and entered. Leviticus
walked to the carriage and closed its open door. He uttered a few words to the driver
too low for the nosey gladiators to hear. Flipping a coin to the carriage driver,
Leviticus hurried into the manor and shut the door. The gladiators, still confused
that children entered the manor house, shook off the disbelief and began to practice
once more.

********************

Leviticus hurried to meet the kids in the foyer. "He's in the tower," he said to them
after inspecting them from head to toe. "Mind your manners, you know how testy he can
be when disturbed." He gently shooed them down the hallway toward the library and the
master of the manor. The ancient curator followed them as far as the door and before
turning to leave. He paused and offered one last warning, "Remember children, he . .
." The children then shooed the steward off with playful smirks and waving hands
before opening the door. They marched to the center of the room.

"Why have you come?" The tiny robed figure did not look up from his tome as he
addressed the two children standing before him. Aged volumes and yellowed scrolls
littered the a crescent-shaped desk positioned in a corner. Darque stood in the
desk's interior curve and his eyes darted up and down the yellowed pages which turned
without him touching them.

"Mother sent us. She says she has pressing matters to attend, and we were to come and
stay with you until she calls for our return." One of the children responded, the
boy.

In the corner closest to the library door sat Sidon. The dwarven bodyguard never
strayed far from the wizard. He eyed the boy and girl from head to toe, taking note
of any weapons, wands, or instruments, but the did not see anything except an ornate
dagger strapped to his left leg of the boy. The young man, a head-and-a-half taller
than the girl, wore a black, silk shirt with black leather pants and matching boots.
Straps resembling belts of various sizes adorned each pant leg. He swept reddish-
brown hair out of his eyes as he spoke to Master Darque.

The girl's eyes wandered around the room. She soaked in the sights and until her eyes
rested on a one shelf in the library. Sidon knew the section well. All the tomes
dealt with fauna, mostly in Alastari, but a few volumes were outer-worldly. Sidon
chuckled to himself. It appeared she maintained her interests in animals and longed
to dive into the manuscripts in Darque's study. She noticed the dwarf in the corner
and gave him a waist-high wave of recognition.

He answered with a nod and then the dwarf smelled sulfur. Master Darque, the half-
demon wizard, involuntarily emitted the scent when agitated. Working by his side for
twenty years, Sidon became adept at calculating the sorcerer's moods. He jumped from
his chair in the corner, "Why don't I show you to your rooms! You'll find them much
the same as you left them, maybe a little cleaner thanks to Leviticus's phobia of
dust."

"That will not be necessary yet, Sidon. Children, you are welcome here as always, but
you cannot be idle during your visit. Tomorrow I will secure tutors from town for
you. Leviticus will coordinate your daily schedule. You will meet with me twice
weekly for your arcane training. Do we have an understanding?"

"Aren't you forgetting something?" a squeaky voice asked. Darque's brow furrowed, but
Sidon no longer smelled sulfur.

"Doubtful, but what do you believe I am forgetting?" the wizard replied.

"You promised the next time we got to visit you would let us participate in the games!
I've been practicing! I bet I could be Duelmaster here in Stormcrowe by year's end!"
the boy exclaimed. His sister nodded in agreement and added, "Yeah, me too!"

Sidon looked to Master Darque in surprise, "You promised them what? She'd skin you
alive if they got so much as a scratch!" The wizard shook the surprised expression
from his face and shot the dwarf a disapproving stare.

"I did not promise you could participate in the games!" he retorted. "I said I would
give you gladiators to train! There is a difference . . ." Darque stopped as he
noticed the children laughing.

Channel Master smirked at his father, "So, about those gladiators!" he added.

Darque let out an exasperated sigh. "Sidon, take them to the yard. Tell Leviticus to
prepare the proper paperwork and submit it to . . ." he paused and thought through the
various arenas in Alastari. "Have him send it to Telorinthe."

                                      SPY REPORT

Welcome back to Telorinthe! It is so great to come to the arena and see all the fans
back in those seats. BUT, do you know what else is great! It is AWESOME to see all
of the gladiators our on the sands! We have had a resurgence of late with a few new
teams and some returning old ones. I want to welcome each of you to Telorinthe, the
only slow no-tourney arena in Alastari! It is great to have you! Let's take a look at
what happened this turn in our great arena!

If you sat through the Duelmaster's fight today, you are a true warrior! It lasted
for 41-minutes and there were more than a few fans that got up to go to the bathroom,
buy something from a food vendor, or start and finish War and Peace. It was a long
one! Borys faced off against J.J. Watt and it was an absolute snooze fest. There
should be a rule that if no one swings for 10-minutes the arena master can release a
lion or an angry squirrel. If you didn't stick around, no one blames you, but J.J.
Watt is our newest Duelmaster! Congrats to J.J., who is managed by Channel Master.

The most avoided team for the turn is House of Fur. Queen Artemis's crew doesn't look
too scary to me, but then again, I'm not out on the sands fighting them. They were
mostly avoided by one of our newest teams, Empire Strikes Out. Maybe Agent R saw
something on the recognition boards that we missed. Former Duelmaster and all-around
decent guy, King Chappa, was this cycle's most challenged warrior. Burger King posted
an 18-point up-challenge and it seems to have paid off as BK was victorious after a 5-
minute bout.

Sadly, there is a death to report this turn. In only her second fight, Princess
Leadoff was killed by Bibidee. It looks as if the princes posted the challenge, but
that never does much in lessening the blow of losing a warrior. Condolences to Agent
R and his crew on the loss. Another warrior died in the Dark Arena, but we all know
those will always end in death.

With new and returning teams, I thought I would close out this spy report with a
roster report. Be sure and correct me if I get your name wrong! I like to keep my
files up-to-date! I would like to personally welcome Agent R to the arena! We look
forward to seeing great things from you!

Telorinthe -- Sorry about the 8-10 month hiatus. Looks like some of you have
improved a lot in my absence. I'll be looking to test the mettle of your metal first

Wyan -- I hope Borys is more talented that you are. -- Hired by Trump

Burger King -- You broke my patty-flipper you overgrown marketing clown! -- Hillary
Clinton

Harley -- The only Harley's I know are the two wheeled variety, and they don't like
heavy rain. -- Hurricane Season

Maniac Mauler -- Do you realize that you were my opponent in back to back fights! At
least one of us has improved noticeably -- Detention

Death Bringer -- Who slipped that banana peel under my cleats -- 0-2 Count

Anael Blackfeather -- You did it! Congrats. -- Physicality, maybe too good at losing

Moose Head -- Am I to understand that Scorpio favors the head over the body of the
moose? Seems an odd combination. To each his own, I say! -- Frenemy

Antonio Brown -- Congrats. Good job. Now leave me alone. -- Charming Kitten

Reese's PB -- Just a terrible matchup for us, really. We don't hold you responsible
for killing Rage Quit. However, we will be Bloodfeuding, possibly to our detriment.
It's an honor system as old as the 1980's, and it's simply too late to change it now.

                                 RSI PANDEMIC UPDATE

We're doing okay out here in Arizona, staying mostly quiet and trying to stay healthy,
and we hope you and your families are well. Things are super weird right now.
Here's a quick update on what's coming up:

Summer 2020 Face-to-Face: In case there is any lingering doubt, the 2020 summer face-
to-face is cancelled. It just doesn't seem wise to hold it, and feedback is that most
of you would not be able to attend. Better to stay safe and stay at home, this time.

Summer 2020 Mail-In: So we'll hold a mail-in tournament this summer. It will be held
on the weekend of July 17-19, 2020. We are still finalizing the format--look for the
tournament announcement shortly after the freeze on June 6th.

Halloween 2020 Mail-In: Should be able to take place as normal. We bandied about the
idea of having a Fall FTF, but that doesn't look like a good idea.

Winter 2021 Face-to-Face: We have already secured a contract for the Winter FTF in
Tempe for our usual Martin Luther King weekend, January 15-17, 2021 and are crossing
our fingers that we will be able to hold that tournament in person, but there is still
some chance that we will need to cancel it as well. I expect we will know for certain
in November or December. Please mark it on your calendars and feel free to get hotel
reservations, but don't buy non-refundable plane tickets! (We are waiting for the
group code for reservations and will post it when we get it.)

Summer 2021 Face-to-Face: Surely we'll be able to have this one! *crossed fingers*
We're looking at the midwest cities for this one (Cincinnati or Minneapolis), so stay
tuned.

                            THE BLOODGAMES HAVE RETURNED!

For those of you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing
alive upon the arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even
though several warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only three will be crowned
Bloodgames Champions and be invited to the Isle of the Eye! And in this game mere
survival counts for little. A great general once said, "The object of battle is not
to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die for his." This general would have
greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames!

By popular demand, we will hold THREE Bloodgames arenas -- a regular and slow
Bloodgames by mail, and a Bloodgames which will run with the mail-in tourney!

DM 95: slow bloodgames (due every four weeks, due July 20)
DM 98: regular speed bloodgames (due every two weeks, due July 20)
DM 99: mail-in style bloodgames (processed with the tourney, due July 15)

Gameplay in the Bloodgames proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few
notable exceptions:

* STARTING A BLOODGAMES TEAM -- You don't need a special rollup to enter the
bloodgames. Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting style, each
warrior designed from scratch! (All are 84 points, 3-21, as usual.) Simply list your
ten warriors and send them to us; we will send you back overviews of your warriors so
you can submit strategies. The first turn is due mid-July and subsequent turns will
be due on Mondays.

* DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat
darker before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and
spirited. The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying
warrior. Even at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur. There are no
replacements -- once a warrior dies, that's it!

* STRATEGIES AND CHALLENGES -- New strategies may be issued for each turn for the
regular and slow bloodgames, while the mail-in bloodgames will process all ten rounds
with a single strategy. The only type of challenge available is a bloodfeud.

* MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.

* ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.

* NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Bloodgames
Champions may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.

* AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. The top three living warriors with the
greatest number of kills, only one of each style, are deemed Bloodgames Champions.
Win/loss records and, if necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine
awards if there is a tie. All three Bloodgames Champions fight for free for six
months and can issue one Tournament Victor challenge each turn, allowing them to
challenge with increased priority, also for six months.

* FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up additional
teams but may fight only one team in each arena. The fee is $49 for all 10 rounds.

* AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the Bloodgames Champions: Lady Sheila Greywand, of the
Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three gladiators in each Bloodgames
admission to the Advanced Duelmasters games. Any special training required to qualify
those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters combat will be conducted before transfer
into ADM. Astute managers will note that this means that three warriors that are
designed from scratch will survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places,
and go on to immortal glory! One of those warriors could be yours!

The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!

NEW GRADUATES--FROM ALL ARENAS (INCLUDING CLOSED ARENAS)

For those of you who keep track of such things, a few additional warriors graduated
from regular DM arenas (including closed arenas) since the last tournament.

                      WICKED WASP (35-4784) SATAN'S SWARM (418)
                    TYRANNICAL TICK (35-4786) SATAN'S SWARM (418)
EMPTY (72-7269) BASH BROS WALLET (873)
                    NOBODY HOME (82-53135) ROOKIE PINK 59 (8963)
CAN'T BEAT TUM (84-40978) THE GREAT TMM (7146)
                        LINT (84-49584) 4-LETTER DIRT (8504)
JANUARY O. IRONTAIL (84-25625) EVIL EASTER BUNNY (4553)
SHOULD BE FUN (85-29872) FRANKENSTEIN HUNT (5482)

Congrats to the grads. -- Green Eyes
