'Tales from Telo 5' by Hammer the WordSmith

"These violent delights have violent ends. And in their triumph die, like
fire and powder, Which as they kiss consume."
-- Romeo and Juliet: Act Two Scene Six

Thia Salanora waited a bit impatiently for the unexpected uproar to die down after
announcing to the Aaaarrgh Hammerz stable that Hammer had left instructions for her to
prepare Obedience Hammer to train for the second Blood Feud attempt vs Ten Toes.

Valentine Hammer was screaming that she should get another opportunity to defeat Ten
Toes and add another Win to her much-maligned W/L Record.

Outlander Hammer was arguing his case as the Oldest Warrior to have a shot at
improving his Win Total at the expense of Ten Toes!

2017 Brawl Hammer added his 'two cents' to the uproar insisting that he should have an
opportunity to prove himself against Ten Toes in memory of Remembers Hammer.

Vengeance Hammer bellowed that his Name alone was good enough reason to be selected to
Blood Feud Ten Toes in Vengeance for the demise of Remembers Hammer.

Obedience Hammer merely hung his head in Submission to the Hammer Decree.

Thia Salanora was thoroughly disgusted with the uncharacteristic display that had
suddenly and unexpectedly burst forth from the four Aaaarrgh Hammer stable mates.

So disgusted in fact, that she threw them out of the room with a severe tongue lashing
that warned them that Hammer might not be so forgiving by their insubordination!

The Frenzied Foursome spat their disgust with a variety of venomous words, refusing to
even consider inviting their rookie teammate to join them at The Warty Toad.

[TIME JUMP]

Hammer had arrived at The Warty Toad rather unexpectedly, being a few days early from
his normal schedule of checking on his stables in North Fork, Arkers, Stormcrowe and
of course Telorinthe. The Veteran Manager known far and wide as Hammer was still
mulling over the unexpected turn of events in Arkers Arena that had spurred the
Veteran Manager to make some drastic changes from his normal managerial ways.

Had it not been for the contest in Stormcrowe Arena, there may well have been a carry-
over of repercussions affecting his roster of Abattoir 5 Blades, but the Veteran
Manager was disciplined enough to refrain from marring his potential Top Ten contest
ranking by incurring unnecessary penalty points during the Slaughter Priest Memorial
cycle of the Wheel Of Misfortune in Arena 45.

So instead of directly meeting with Thia Salanora and his Aaaarrgh Hammerz, as was his
usual custom, the Veteran Manager had sent word in advance for his newest addition,
namely Obedience Hammer, to Blood Feud Ten Toes next cycle.

Arriving in Telorinthe sooner than expected, instead of going directly to meet with
Thia Salanora in person, it was the whim of Hammer to visit The Warty Toad, where he
was certain to find his friend Weirdo willing to inform him of the recent Telo rumors
or truths.

Hammer stealthily entered The Warty Toad, as unceremoniously as possible, by slipping
unseen through a seldom used doorway at the back entrance, where he was sure to find a
certain man in a pink bathrobe at his usual secluded table in the back.

Hammer once more approached the man in the pink bathrobe who was occupying his usual
corner table. As Hammer drew near he overheard Weirdo, his Friend and Fellow Veteran
Manager, complaining to the bar wench that he never gets an umbrella in his drink,
even though he asked for one.

The barmaid scoffed and flicked her hair, before walking away, as Hammer could see
first-hand that some things never change in Telo and especially at The Warty Toad.

After sitting down and exchanging pleasantries, Hammer expressed his concern about his
friend's mounting enemies in Telo Arena.

Weirdo lifted his head with a gleeful smile as his excited declaration echoed quite
loudly throughout the confines of The Warty Toad:

"Oh, My Fans!"

Weirdo placed his hand firmly on his chest as his eyes lit up at the response of the
crowd with their varied chorus of positive and negative hoots and hollers.

"You Know," Weirdo raised his voice to the crowd with a sweeping gesture of
acknowledgement, "Some of My Biggest Fans are Right Here in Telo!"

Hammer motioned for his friend to sit back down at the table as the mixed response
from the gathered crowd caused the Veteran Manager to express further concerns
regarding the actual popularity of the notorious down-challenger.

Weirdo merely grinned all the more broadly as he replied with a wave of his hand:

"Is that so!?!"

Hammer nodded.

"Oh, how curious it is," exclaimed Weirdo as he leaned forward so that only his friend
Hammer could hear what he had to say, "that I received not a single challenge in the
last cycle!"

Hammer considered the consequences of what Weirdo was implying for the future on the
Sands of Telo Arena!

"Just remember this my friend," continued Weirdo with a tell-tale glint in his eyes
that spoke of unspoken plans to be formulated and revealed in the months ahead.

Hammer gave Weirdo his undivided attention.

"Whether my stable receives one Challenge or twenty-one challenges each cycle," a
mischievous smile spread across his face, as his eyes rolled upwards with subdued
glee, betraying the fact that Weirdo was obviously formulating an undisclosed plan for
the future of Telo Arena.

"My Warriors only have to fight one of those Simps every four weeks!"

SPEAKING OF WARRIORS: As if on cue an uproar of familiar voices could be heard at the
front of The Warty Toad Tavern as the four malcontents from the Aaaarrgh Hammerz
stable managed by Hammer burst into the establishment mouthing their complaints
regarding Hammer designating Obedience Hammer to Blood Feud vs Ten Toes.

Not realizing that Hammer was well within earshot of his boisterous and complaining
stable, his Aaaarrgh Hammerz foursome continued their venting with unbridled
enthusiasm as they drank and argued about who should get the honor of Blood Feuding
the aforementioned Ten Toes this next cycle!

Weirdo had also noticed the foursome mouthing off and also noticed that Hammer was
keeping himself under quite a remarkable bit of self-control as his stable kept
mouthing off without any regard of who may be listening to their boisterous complaints
against the Veteran Manager who held their individual destinies in his hands.

"Looks like you have a few strays in your stable, Hammer!"

Hammer merely nodded to Weirdo in silent agreement, his face beginning to flush with a
slightly noticeable bit of annoyance towards his four malcontents.

"What are the odds of the Telo Dark Arena producing Studs instead of Strays?"

It was a question from Hammer that Weirdo noted to be more serious than rhetorical.

"Heh, not likely, but still ..." Weirdo weighed his words carefully as his mind made
several cross references to past comments from a variety of Telo managers who had sent
their warriors to the Dark Arena with disappointing replacement results.

"Maybe it's time to put a Torch in their hand and give them the Fight of their Life!"

Weirdo abruptly got up from the table, tightened his pink bathrobe, put on his
crimson-feathered hat and gave Hammer a quick wink as he headed for the front door.

On his way out, though, the controversial Telo manager stole a tiny umbrella off one
of the passing barmaid's tray and giggled gleefully as he boldly walked out the front
door.

Hammer chuckled at the brazen sight of his colorful, but controversial, friend, before
quietly and stealthily exiting the tavern, unseen by his insubordinate stable.

[TIME JUMP]

Thia Salanora and Hammer were holding court with his Aaaarrgh Hammerz stable.

Obedience Hammer had been commended by Hammer for his submissive conduct in the light
of the bullying of the Newbie by his more seasoned stable mates.

Hammer reaffirmed his decision to have the Newbie face Ten Toes for the next Blood
Feud Challenge on the Telo Arena Sands!

Then the Veteran Manager dismissed the Newbie, before revealing to his remaining
Aaaarrgh Hammerz that he had been at The Warty Toad the night they had mouthed their
boisterous complaints for any and all ears to hear!

Hammer meticulously repeated the various retorts that the Veteran Manager had
overheard from his rebellious stable, detail-by-sordid detail, so that there was No
Doubt as to Who had Said What to sully the reputation of the Veteran Manager at The
Warty Toad ... for all Telo to hear!

"The Four of You!"

Hammer glared at the insurrection culprits whose poisonous words of rebellion he would
No Longer Tolerate ... Now or Ever!

"Grab One of These Torches!"

"May Your Blades Be Sharp and Your Wits Sharper!"

Channel Master felt strong hands steady him. Familiar voices directed him to sit, to
drink. "I'm going to give you a healing salve," Queen Artemis told him. "You're
going to drink it, and then you need to rest."

Channel Master reached blindly for the flask, fumbling with the stopper. He drank the
liquid greedily and gasped, grimacing both at the surprising spicy heat of the potion,
and the burn he felt as it slid down his throat. Gulping too much too fast, he
sputtered and coughed and his eyes watered, but immediately he felt better.

"What was that?" Channel Master felt a wave of relief course through his being.

"Floyd's hangover remedy. I added tabasco because I was mad at you."

A preternatural scream, followed by a boom and a searing wave of hit caused them all
to flinch.

"Nemesis!" Queen Artemis announced as she turned and ran toward the sound, crashing
through roadside brush, and disappearing as Channel Master gaped incredulously. He
looked at Dragon Master who motioned toward Red Death, then turned and ran. "Yeah, no
thanks!" Channel Master thought as he watched the dragon take flight. He paused
looking for water and, finding none, he dropped the empty flask and followed Queen
Artemis.

Channel Master jumped through the brush and immediately regretted the decision as
there was nothing there to meet his step. He fell headlong, tumbling down a hill with
surprising speed. Ducking his head and bending his back, the NFL Network manager
concentrated on spreading the impact from wrist to shoulder to waist as he rolled down
the hill, trying at first to be graceful and quickly abandoning style points as he
felt his descent accelerate. Just as he thought he was getting the hang of it, the
hill flattened out. Stung by the brush, whipped bloody by the occasional tree limb,
he landed at Queen Artemis' feet in an unceremonious heap.

After doing a quick survey to make sure he had not broken any bones or lost any teeth,
CM looked up, waiting for his sister's sarcastic comment, but she was peering past him
and looking intently. "Not even an eye roll?" the NFL Network manager thought.
Channel Master turned slowly in the direction she was facing.

The landscape was fairly clear, with the bushy hillside giving way to what was
probably a dry river bed. While sandy and fairly clear of debris, the ground rose
slowly in that direction. In the distance -- perhaps forty yards away -- lay a
clearly unconscious Nemesis. A slow trickle of blood oozed from her head and down a
large rock. Above her stood a large green humanoid figure, dressed in jet black
leather armor with a crimson cape billowing lightly in the breeze. It held what
looked like an immense halberd that -- for additional terrifying effect -- glowed
light blue.

"Finally, you have arrived," the demon stated in perfect Common Tongue. It stepped
over the body of Nemesis, interposing itself between the spell caster and her two
would be rescuers. "I wondered if I'd have to send you another clue on how to get
here."

Channel Master scrambled to his feet. "Who are you?" He dusted himself off
distractedly.

"No one to be trifled with," the demon replied. "That is all you need to know."

Channel Master made eye contact with Queen Artemis, who nodded. The shadow walker
strode forward, and stood tall, eyeing the demon coolly. "I must know."

"Get used to disappointment."

Channel Master smiled briefly. "Touche."

"We have you surrounded." The demon made a broad sweeping gesture with its halberd,
and Channel Master turned to see several smaller demons of various colors and builds,
arranged in a rough semi-circle perhaps a hundred yards distant, advancing slowly.
Some walked, some crawled, while others appeared to hop. And they called to each
other across the distance, a nightmarish sound that made Channel Master's skin crawl.
The NFL Network manager looked at his druid priestess sister, who seemed distracted,
not paying attention to their conversation. Channel Master looked back at the demon.

"Surrender now, and no one gets hurt." The demon smiled, flashing straight white
teeth, each ending in a pronounced point. "I promise, even your precious dragon will
be unharmed."

"What dragon?" Channel Master asked innocently.

"Indeed," the demon replied. "What's a rescue mission without a pointless battle and
senseless death?" It hesitated briefly, stepping back and placing his boot on
Nemesis' unconscious form. "Which one of you shall I harm so that the rest will go
quietly?"

A screech made Channel Master look up as a lone white falcon dove from above, wings
folded close to its body as it plunged in a direct line at the demon who watched,
bemused. "I was hoping for more," he chuckled, raising his halberd and gripping it
with both hands.

Tooth struck first, the white wolf silently hitting the demon low from behind, and
Fang followed immediately after, going high. The demon uttered a guttural cry,
flinging first one wolf off and then the other, struggling to rise to its feet as the
wolves launched themselves again and again at his form.

A sound like nails on a chalkboard, screaming in pain, erupted from behind Channel
Master, who turned to see the ring of demons in chaos, running in all directions,
pursued by what looked like large flightless birds, biting at the demons and jumping
in the air, slashing with long sharp talons. More falcons and other birds harassed
the demons from above.

Channel Master looked at Queen Artemis, who sank to the ground, exhausted. "Emus?" He
asked. "I can only summon what's nearby," she shrugged.

The demon leader rose again, shrugging off the two wolves, and swung the flat blade of
his weapon, sending Tooth reeling. It evaded Fang's charge, and swung his halberd
around as the blade glowed a blinding blue. It opened its mouth to utter a word of
power when a gust of air presaged the dark shadow that swooped in, sending the demon
flying.

"Woohoo!" Dragon Master yelled. "Take that, you baddie!"

Red Death gently grabbed the unconscious form of Nemesis in its clawed feet, and
lifted off carrying her far from harm.

Channel Master squatted by Queen Artemis. "Are you okay?"

Distracted, she opened an eye, finally focusing on him. "I don't know yet. Tooth's
hurt. We need to get out of here. Aaarrrgggghhh!" And Queen Artemis fainted.

Channel Master turned, and saw the demon raise his halberd. Nearby, Fang lay
bleeding, stunned.

The demon smiled, looking up and catching Channel Master's eye. "You humans always
have to do things the hard way, don't you?" Channel Master watched as the tall demon
swung the halberd in a slow graceful arc, the blue glow slowly deepening in hue. CM
could feel the power of the weapon even at this distance. He estimated the distance
between them, and gauged his own strength.

Channel Master started walking slowly toward the demon, eyeing him coolly. The demon
stood at least a head higher than Channel Master, and the rise of the dry riverbed
made him taller still. Channel Master gathered his strength, and began a slow jog.

"Don't do it, Channel Master," the demon laughed. "I have the higher ground." He
increased the speed of his halberd swings, arcing tighter and faster as the halberd
glowed brighter and hotter with arcane power.

Channel Master picked up his pace, soon sprinting at top speed and watching for the
tell-tale move: a hip twist that presaged a vertical blade snap in his direction.
Then Channel Master did something he had only read about: He folded the fabric of
shadow. Like taking a taut string, and creating slack to bring two distant points
together, he manipulated the fabric of shadow, jumping the gap and launching himself
at its hulking dark form.

"No!" The demon shouted as Channel Master leapt unexpectedly into action. Arms
flailing in surprise, the demon dropped its weapon as it tried to fend off the sudden
attack. Channel Master grabbed tenaciously on, refusing to yield his grip even as his
supernatural opponent resisted, wrapping his hands and arms in the long flowing cloak,
and shifted shadow. In an instant, they were gone. The demon's halberd felt to the
ground, its blue light going out like a candle in a strong wind.

Dragon Master watched from above as, incredulously, Channel Master seemed to teleport,
appearing near the demon and launching himself at the large green mass. They
disappeared with just a pop! of air as the atmosphere filled in the spot where they
had been.

Red Death circled the area slowly, routing the last of the demons with fire.
Leaderless and harried by avian wildlife, the demons fled, disappearing into the
countryside. Dragon Master landed Red Death and strode to where Channel Master stood
just moments before, looking around but finding no signs of him. Red Death gently
laid Nemesis' unconscious body onto the soft sand.

Quickly checking Nemesis' vitals and assuring herself that her sister would recover,
the young manager turned and walked past the dragon, to the huddled form of the
druidic priestess. She squatted down beside her.

"Now what do we do?"

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Hey, not much time this week but here are the answers to those riddles:

I speak without a mouth and hear without ears.
I have no body, but I come alive with wind.
     What am I?

     Answer: An Echo

You measure my life in hours I serve and I serve you by expiring.
I'm quick when I'm thin and slow when I'm fat.
     The wind is my enemy.
     What am I?

     Answer: A candle

And one new one for this week:

What walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon
     and three at night?

                                          -- J.J. Watt

                                      SPY REPORT

HELLLOOOOHO! I want to welcome you back to Telorinthe, the only slow no tourney arena
in the land! It is great to see each of you once again in the arena. We had lots of
exciting fights today, and I cannot wait to tell you about a few of them. First, I
want to say I hope each of you had a wonderful time at the tournament. Umm, that
would be directed to the managers and not the warriors. I have only spoken to a few
of you about your experiences, but it sounded wonderful! Okay, let's see what
happened today in Telorinthe!

I am trying to remember the last time we had a Duelmaster other than J.J. Watt. Oh
wait, I have scrolls for that . . . let me see, J.J. took the throne on turn 170.
Yes, he has been Duelmaster for 5 turns coming into today's matches. It looks as if
J.J. Watt used his right of bloodfeud today and challenged F3PO for killing his
teammate, Brian Dawkins. The matchup was a bit lopsided, as you would expect between
a Duelmaster and a Challenger Initiate. To no one's surprise, J.J. Watt beat F3PO and
remains our arena Champion! J.J. is managed by Channel Master.

The most avoided team for the turn is RiffRaff's Crew. Huard is now doubled over
laughing at this, but I am not sure why. He may have to explain it to me later
because I am sure whatever he says cannot be published here! RiffRaff's Crew was
mostly avoided by Ironskull Orcs. Pusheen with her 151 record is the most challenged
warrior today. It was Iceman of Scorpio's Likes: that had the right of bloodfeud
though, so he got the priority challenge. Pusheen lost to Iceman, and he has secured
honor for his fallen teammate. There are no new teams today, but it is good to see so
many active! Keep up the great work!

There were 7 deaths today, but only 2 of them were nonDark Arena deaths. The first
death came as a surprise to many, the least of which was the guy who got killed. Wyan
matched up randomly with Detention in the upper levels. You never expect many deaths
high in the rankings due to the fighters' experience. The most I think about it, this
fight is not that much of a surprise. I mean, Wyan had 3 kills going into this fight!
Yes, Wyan put down Detention, who had 2 kills himself before facing his own mortality.
The second death occurred when Oolong died at the hands of Bonebreaker. Orcs can be
so moody at times! Don't them I said that!

Sorcerer Kings shoot up to the top of the arena rankings with an 1142 record over the
last three. They moved up seven spots to reach first! Even more impressive than 7
spots is the 9 places The Red Company moved up to take over 2nd place. NFL Network,
The Ferocious Five, and Shadow of Mega all fall one spot to finish out the rest of the
top 5 teams. The Red Company gets recognized for the largest gain in the rankings,
which also translated into an award for Top Team on the Move. The Dragons and Queen's
Guard share the infamy for the largest fall on our list at 5 spots.

Enjoy the rest of your afternoon! As the youngest spy report, wait, I'm not the
youngest spy reporter! :::muffled voices from the side::: Oh, well, that makes sense.
I've just been corrected, as the youngest LOOKING spy reporter, I have been tasked
with sorting and filing all of the tourney reports for the Yellow Press. Being an elf
has its advantages, now is not one of them! I better get going, this stack of scrolls
and parchments are not going to sort themselves!
