TEAM SPOTLIGHT
---- Lost in the City ----
Left? No, right! Sweat stung his eyes. He looked back at the torchlight of the Arena
to get his bearings on this moonless night, then turned and stumbled hurriedly along.
He blinked and squinted. What?! That was her on the corner up ahead!! He scowled and
swore. No money, no honey! He ran and fell on her, demanding she tell him what she had
done with their child! Then he was grabbed from behind. WHAT?! That goon from the
Silver Eel had followed him!! No pay, no play! He drew his dagger and stabbed high!
slashed low! He raged at the night! ... Telorinthe's high town bells rang...
A week ago...
Big Lou escorted him from the card room, out the back door of the Silver Eel, and
deposited him in the alley like so much human garbage. No pay, no play. Boss says
you're not good for it anymore; you owe too much. You got seven days to pay your debt.
... No problem, he had a plan.
The next day, at his desk upstairs in mid-town's merchant guild hall, he studied the
records. He found the perfect shipment. It was easy for him to change the ten to a
hundred. Someone might notice, though. A hundred bolts of sailcloth was an unusually
large amount for Telorinthe's small harbor, but it would be easy for him to explain
the increased demand. Everyone knew the Shewish Giants were big babies about catching
"bad air" from little folk. They insisted on wearing large, full-body, triple-layered
suits and masks of sailcloth during these plague times. Everyone knew that.
His quill scratched the ink into the hide parchment of the letter to the bank,
requesting the customary consignment advance loan in the amount of ten times the value
of the actual shipment. He affixed his seal as head scribe of the merchant's guild,
authenticating the document. No questions would be asked, and they weren't.
Several days later, the fund arrived in the daily armed wagon delivery to the guild
hall. The guards left him to his work, trusted head scribe as he was. He finished his
tally, carefully transferred nine-tenths of the sailcloth money to his bag, carried it
home, and hid it there. No one had suspected him. He had done it! Tomorrow he would
pay his debt, and early! He slept well that night.
In the morning, it was gone! He looked twice, thrice. He called for his wife and
child. He snatched up her farewell letter off the table. She was fed up with his lies.
He wasn't as clever as he thought he was. She knew he had lost all his money gambling
and lost all her inheritance from her father, too, and was in dire debt. She wouldn't
be a beggar's wife. She knew he had stolen that money he'd hid last night. She
wouldn't be a thief's wife. What did he expect would happen when the shipment arrived
short?! She wouldn't be a convict's wife. She was turning it in, turning him in,
leaving him. No money, no honey.
Frantic, he packed his bag and tried to walk casually and not run as he made his way
down to the docks. Seagulls cried out on the pier and the harbormaster shook his head.
By Council decree, no ships to or from the Nhirivin River on account of pirates on the
Storm Sea. He couldn't get away by land, either, with the King's strict travel ban in
these plague times.
Desperate now, he drank to forget and lost himself in the crowd at the Dark Arena that
night. Big Lou found him there, though, and roughed him up. Tomorrow! You'd better
have the boss's money by tomorrow! He ran away from a second beating.
* * * *
In his village in the Hillwood Isles in the west, Pathskin had heard of Telorinthe in
the east, its gleaming spires, its heavenly bells, its night life and its exotic
pretty pretty girls all dressed so scantily. Now that he was seeing the city in
person, however, he was disappointed. There was a rot in this place. Half the commons
were a slum, the other half a slum ghost town, the bells woke you up at night, half
the women were old, worn, harpies, the other half young, worn harpies, at least in the
commons. These Dark Arena fights were slaughters. No honor. After watchcing more than
he could stomach, he got up in disgust. Pining for his humble forested hillside
village on his way out of the arena, he passed a big guy beating up a little guy in
the stands. He sighed wearily. That's the city alright. Here the strong prey on the
weak. He wasn't sure he would ever get used to it.
He moved closer to try to even the odds, but was relieved when the skinny guy got away
on his own. Exiting the arena, Pathskin waslked after him a while in case the big guy
came back to finish the job. None of his business, but Pathskin had a thing for
protecting the weak, and fair fights. Behind him, the arena torches were almost out of
view and Pathskin turned toward the Silver Eel. A last glance after that poor little
guy, and Pathskin saw him jump an old whore! In disbelief and outrage, Pathskin ran
over and pulled the little guy off her. None of his business but he had a thing for...
It was his last good deed. He bled out on that corner at the end of a skinny, drunken
dagger.
The embezzling scribe ran and vanished into the night. Telorinthe's high town bells
rang, and the night vanished into the dawn.
SPY REPORT
It is that exciting time of the month when everyone gets together and tries to
smash skulls, sever limbs, and say hurtful things about your mom! No, it isn't a
neighborhood bake sale, it's ARENA DAY in TELORINTHE! We had a lot of fights on the
sands and a few new teams show up to join us. We were also missing a few, so
hopefully, they will come back soon!
Borys took the throne by recognition the last turn. He had the chance to show if
he deserved it today. Well, I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but it doesn't
look like Borys was up for the task! Arena veteran Rook made the challenge sought
Telorinthe's highest honor as Duelmaster, and he was victorious! Congratulations to
Rook, who is now our Duelmaster and the newest Lord Protector from our fair arena!
Rook is managed by Nomad.
It has not happened in a long time, but we only had Dark Arena deaths this turn.
I am not sure whether I should say congrats or I'm sorry?!?! You guys and gals seem
to like killing a lot, and I just want you to be happy! Ironskull Orcs are our most
avoided team. I'm not sure if that has to do with fighting prowess or hygiene, but
the fact remains other teams are avoiding them. Conjure the Sun avoided them the
most. Once again, not sure if they are scared or have sensitive noses and orc-stank
is a bit overpowering!
Agent R's Umpire Palpatine is the most challenged fighter. He saw a challenge
from the lower-ranked Feral Blade. When the dust settled, Umpire Palpatine was
victorious. I have to wager that a name like Feral Blade would easily give in to his
anger. I know they are stage names, but most managers are aware of the names they are
giving their warriors and their personality quarks. All I'm saying is a bet Feral
Blade played right into Umpire Palpatine's hand and struck out and got struck down in
his hate!
I have to admit that I was wrong! I was anticipating a big rush of graduates
over the last few turns and it has not developed. Sure, there have been graduates, an
average of 1 per turn, over the last 3 turns. But, but, but I wanted more! I wanted
an explosion of Lord Proctors heading to the Isle from our arena! I know it is not a
competition with the other no-tourney arenas, but let me say plainly, IT IS A
COMPETITION WITH THE OTHER NO-TOURNEY ARENAS! Nemesis has 3 style masters, it cannot
be long before she starts sending warriors to the Isle.
That 80's Team continues to shine and takes over the top team spot with a 13-2-0
record. It is hard to argue with success, so keep up the good work! Dark Oracle has
been having a great string of turns and is within striking distance of the top team.
Welcome to Meal Team 6! Introduce yourselves and pull up a chair at the tavern for a
free round after today's fights! Shadow's crew is missing, as well as TRC and the
unknown manager (and warriors) of Chain Gang.
They are giving me the "cut" signal once again! I have so much more to say, but
they aren't going to hold the presses much longer, so it is now or never! I will be
looking for each of you next turn. Remember, if all goes according to plan, we will
have a new Duelmaster next turn. Well, I mentioned it was possible NOT to have a new
Duelmaster, but we know for sure that Rook will NOT be Duelmaster. You know what,
please come back and see what happens because I'm starting to confuse myself!
