TEAM SPOTLIGHT
---- Still in the Dark ----
Him? Is it that man? Their mother had kept Faithkeep and his brother in the dark about
their father. Then in the seventh Spring, according to Hillwood Isles custom, when the
trees blossomed, the twins apprenticed in the Deepwood, living with a woodsman for
their training. The old man was kind, but they worked hard chopping wood and cleaning
fish; the boys grew strong and skillful. Each day before dawn, the man sat with them
and they practiced breathing deeply, being aware of their body's heat, observing their
mind's thoughts; and through it all, staying sensing their Self by being as still as
the dark woods around them. Faithkeep could sense his twin's Self, too.
The next Spring when the trees blossomed, each day after sunrise the kind man BEAT
them! Confused and frightened at first, they eventually raged at the man, all fists
and kicks a frenzy! At this, the woodsman smiled gently, but spoke firmly, "Faithkeep!
Pathskin! HOLD! Lest you lose your Self." Then he showed them how to beat HIM, and
they practiced.
* * * * *
Ten years later, in Telorinthe....
Faithkeep sat alone before dawn; his brother's cushion sat empty next to him for the
first time in their lives. As still as the Deepwood, his eyes closed, he reached out
his awareness into the dark, but felt... nothing. He observed his thoughts. "What?!
No! Pathskin is ALIVE! We ate together after sparring in the arena just last night!"
Then he smiled gently, but spoke firmly, "I will find you."
Ravens cawed in the large ditch and the gravediggers waved at one of the bodies. He
knelt down at his brother's corpse and yelled and shouted at Pathskin's silence.
* * * * *
They yelled and sparred with each other in the quiet woods, and he shouted as his
brother's long, skinny stick broke his big slab of tree bark into pieces to reveal his
short stick in his hand behind it, as the woodsman had shown them.
* * * * *
Prisoners' curses echoed in their cells and Telorinthe's watchmen shook their heads.
No, and nobody WOULD find who murdered in the night on that dark corner. He smiled
gently at their map of the Commons, but spoke firmly, "I will find you."
* * * * *
The Greatfire lit up the faces of most of the villagers in Hillwood Isles, their
teacher's gentle nod to them from the crowd and his brother's confident smile as they
stretched in the sand before their final trial in this darkest new moon night after
the harvest. Some said the Aged Sage himself would be there in person, but most
believed he would be watching from far away. Pathskin was disappointed, but Faithkeep
wasn't surprised that the Sage's chair sat empty. They began! Pathskin's ax cleaved
his shield into pieces! Revealing the leaf blade in his hand behind it, already at
guard! The villagers cheered and his brother flashed a big smile at him and the crowd.
* * * * *
The clay oven fires roared and the baker of Telorinthe told him of a clean, fat begger
scavenging stale crusts out of the bin in the alley behind the shop. The Commons
beggars pleaded for his sad bread and yammered about a mean new drunk sleeping in the
sewer nearby.
* * * * *
His tall, skinny brother's long ax leaped like the Greatfire's flames and fell like a
Deepwood tree onto his other shield, which fell away in pieces. He held his two long
knives at guard now and cursed aloud! SHIELDS!! The villagers frowned and quieted and
his teacher's face darkened under raised eyebrows.
* * * * *
The city rats squeaked and scurried away in the foul tunnel, and the cornered scribe's
crazed edges jerked and charged in the darkness at where Faithkeep had been a moment
before. Then the wild animal's other tooth bit deep, and again his claw; daggers all a
frenzy! Faithkeep's eyes widened but his brows lowered.
* * * * *
The villagers would cheer HIM! He would make SURE the Aged Sage selected HIM! He
thrust his big, short arm two hard and too far, and they both cried out in pain; his
twin's big smile was far away now.
* * * * *
The scribe's drunken knife slid away along Faithkeep's angled blade, and his other
leaf, windblown by seastorm, slashed back! The panicked animal screeched in pain! Then
again!! And AGAIN!!!
* * * * *
He felt his body burn like the Greatfire and he slashed and stabbed at his wounded
brother. The hushed villagers raised their arms for the Aged Sage to make his
decision, and Faithkeep shot a glance at the Sage's Chair, but it was still empty.
Just then, their teacher, that old woodsman from the Deepwood, stepped out of the
crowd and smiled gently, but spoke firmly, "Hold, SON! BOTH of you! My SONS! TO
TELORINTHE!" The villagers cheered their Aged Sage! A wise decision!
* * * * *
His body burned, and he cursed aloud! MURDERER!! His short blades flickering and
slicing this fish, he observed his mean mind and the cowering scribe's broken face,
and he wondered at the killer he was becoming. He heard the Aged Sage, his father,
smiling gently, but speaking firmly, "HOLD, Son. Lest you lose your Self." Then
Faithkeep wavered and breathed deeply, feeling still in the dark.
SPY REPORT
TEL-O-RINTHE! TEL-O-RINTHE! TEL-O-RINTHE! I love it when the crowd chants in unison!
Ah, welcome back to the only no-tourney slow arena in Alastari! It is good to see
each of you again, and I'm looking forward to sharing with you all the news from our
fair city and its games today. We had 4 inactive teams today, but there was still
plenty of action. Let's jump right in while it is still fresh in my mind. I'd hate
to leave out any important details!
The top is as good a place as any to begin our report. The last turn, Toshi Arito
became our Duelmaster after defeating Borys from Sorcerer Kings. It looks as if Toshi
Arito went with the familiar this turn to retain his throne. He challenged Borys and
defeated him in a 9-minute bout. Congrats once again to Toshi, who is still managed
by Floyd. Toshi is still relatively young, so no invitation yet. He will get another
opportunity next turn to prove his rise to the throne isn't a fluke!
Let me see, the most avoided team appears to be Conjure Up the Sun. They were mostly
avoided by The Ferocious Five. I would think a 12-8-0 record would cause some pause,
but it is the record of our most challenged warrior, Wormspine. How did that work out
for Wormspine today? He got a challenge from Halftime Show, who was 10 points below
him.
HALFTIME SHOW bested WORMSPINE in a popular 1-minute Challenge duel.
Sometimes it pays to be the most challenged warrior, especially if you are confident
you can beat most of the field. Today, it did not work out for poor Wormspine.
Better luck next time!
We have a total of 3 deaths, but 2 of them happened in the Dark Arena. Kame House and
Sorcerer Kings sent their new recruits to fight by torchlight. The one regular death
on the sands came when Physicality at 13-13-0 randomly matched up with Helhound, who
had a 5-5-1 record. I'm guessing someone over at the Commission made an error. Or,
more than likely Physicality was ranked really low, or Helhound was ranked too high!
Eh, we can speculate about it all we want, but it doesn't change the outcome.
Helhound has left the arena, finishing her career at 5-6-1.
Dragon Master and her squad stay at the top of the arena. Floyd moves into 2nd place,
pushing Ironskull Orcs down to 3rd. House of Fur takes a slight tumble and drops from
2nd into 4th. The Ferocious Five jump 5 places to finish out our top 5. As I
mentioned in our opening, we had a number of teams absent today, so we hope to see
Nomad, Gen. Bashur, Gunsmith, and Weirdo back with us in 28 days.
And with that, it is time to go. Come back in 28 days to see more TEL-O-RINTHE
action! Toshi defends the thone again, the other teams try to unseat The Dragons from
their lofty perch atop the standings, and we might even have a few bloodfeuds. We
won't know until then, but you won't want to miss it! See you then!

PERSONAL ADS
My team, the Ironskull Orcs and myself, provided 50% of the personal ad content last
turn?!? If we are to be that much of this arenas entertainment, I think the GC owes
us, big time! LOL -- 'da orcses
My humiliation continues with my pathetic performance against Dangerous Criminal last
turn. I lost to a stand-in fighter??? Man, I suck. Don't anyone even look at me for I
am hideous! I am cursed! I am doomed forever! Woe is me. -- Skarface
I gave my four victorious gladiators the night off. They're probably out drinking up a
storm and making fools of themselves trying to flirt with the barmaids. Pretty sad,
but whatever. They're orcs. As for Skarface, it's a night long practice session with
the practice dummy. On high speed. Remember to duck this time. LOL -- Boss Orc
Skarface cries as he slowly walks to the practice yard, muttering under his breath,
"Why did I eat the funny looking mushroom for breakfast? I feel weird all over. And my
bloody wounds hurt too." o_0
The Aged Sage -- Just a few tips.
1 Learn skills, don't train -- it helps your warriors develop a bit better.
2 Don't dual wield weapons just use 1 in the main hand and a backup.
3 Don't put too much armor on offensive styles like ST, SL, LU, BA, and sometimes AB.
4 Make sure to make challenges and avoids it helps you stay away from those you don't
want to go against and go against who you do.
-- The Young and Spruce Channel Master
All -- To those wondering I was a 9(1)-9-13-15-17-9-13 SL The commission blessed me
with High Offensive Effort and Moderate Activity level. I have no tactics but I was
using my favorite weapon almost right from the start, ah yes the handy scimitar is my
weapon of choice. I learned Decisiveness quite frequently and figured that was my
favorite and I was correct! I was -2 in Init and +2 in attack. Peace -- Lord Protector
and Super Bowl Champion Antonio Brown
All -- To those that care Desmond Howard was 11-4-9-17-17-15-11 SL, no noticed
bonuses. Still, a disappointment he had to die IDK if Bashur will be active but the
bloodfeud is going to be active for one win. -- Channel Master
Boss Orc -- You dirty rat... You Dirty Rat! -- Weirdo
I don't like to complain, BUT ... my opponent's records so far is a combined 57-38-5
in 7 "fights." WHY DOES THE GLADIATORIAL COMMISSION HATE ME ???? -- Doomscroll
Bibidee -- Did you enjoy that? Was that fun for you? -- DSSacha -- Thank you for the
challenge. Frankly, I needed the exercise. -- Nothingburger
Tokugawa -- Well, that didn't work out very well for me. Did it? -- Ride or Die
Stoppa Squeal -- Once I learned the "Embrace the Scum" of my inner nature, I've done
much better. Don't you think? -- Charming Kitten
Blood Lust -- Sorry about that. I wasn't aiming for the head, but you ducked. Well,
tried to. Scars are cool, right? -- Physicality
Gash & Riley -- Bloodgames wants you back! -- the Aged Sage of Hillwood Isles
OBA -- Let us DOUSE that Ember! -- Sageherd
Blinky Me Eyepoke -- You didn't happen to see which weapon I brilliantly flashed there
at the end, because I MADE YOU BLINK! -- Hopegrow
Twinkle Twinkle -- I don't wonder why you went Dark! -- Sageherd
In the old tongue, "arena" means "sand." -- old Sage
Taco Smell -- Only a zombie could resist your aroma for 18 minutes without biting! --
Sageherd
Statistics Lie -- 2 and 3 is a WINNING record when the 2 are BIG wins! -- Hillwood
Isles on the MOVE
Boss Orc -- A little birdie told me that diplo notes can slip past the Censure-ions.
-- the Aged Sage
D&D 3.5 -- You rolled a 20! -- Joymend
Have you seen the way Sageherd looks at Spar Bearer? -- word on the streets of
Telorinthe
That 80's Team struck us as warriors who would rather burn out than fade away! -- the
Aged Sage (and I do mean "struck us")
Desmond Howard -- You lived by the sword, and so you died by the sword. -- Faithkeep
Spar Bearer -- You're better than that "Spar Vearer" guy! (wink) 2 out of 3! --
Gamebring
Kame House -- "Four-award" honor fires burn for you in the villages of Hillwood Isles.
Grogan da Lord -- Clever troll! -- Sageherd
Boss Orc -- You don't laugh like an orc. -- the Aged Sage
Synapse -- You've earned this bounty for Stash's dum head! (roll-up to follow) --
Sageherd
Managers of Telorinthe -- Lord Grogan advises you ignore your warrior's preferences,
but who listens to a troll!? -- the Deepwood elves of Hillwood Isles
Bonebreaker -- Halftime Show stole your thunder? Fed you your own lines? -- the Aged
Sage
Bloodaxe -- Go ahead let's gloat! I have arrested that Embezzling Scribe and claimed
the Merchant Guild's bounty this moon! -- Faithkeep
Bashur -- A warty toad told me their Dad is so poor, he was kicking a can down the
road, and when the bullyfrog asked him what he was doing, he said he was MOVING! --
the Aged Sage (but what do frogs know?)
When Bad Signs, 80's Team, Empire Strikes Out walk away from the sand, we wonder why
we walk onto the sand. -- the Deepwood Muse of Hillwood Isles
Sand Inquisitor -- The Aged Sage counsels restraint; I weather the storm of blades.
Sageherd reassures me I can mend a broken record, but many "winned" down-challenging
dual-shielders will be forever joyless! -- Joymend
Pleasant surprise: This turn, first 3 fights were losses, and I despaired at another
0-5 turn, but then the 4th and 5th fights were wins! Had gotten used to what was
apparently just coincidence that all the wins have always been up in the front of the
stack of fights? -- otherworldly spirit of Hillwood Isles
