Telorinthe,
I've lost too many of my children to this stinking cesspool of a town... Come to claim
back what's mine. The shadows told me Joymend and Sageherd had taken up with a certain
Green and his Lady and a young fool. Well, if I can't have them, they can all have
what I've arranged with the shadows hiding from the torches of the Dark Arena.

"I don't really do New Year's Resolutions, anymore. I found I was always breaking
them."
The silence was uncomfortable.
"Nice alligators. Or are they crocodiles? I never did learn to tell the difference."
Again, silence.
"I assume they're pets?"
The creaking of the rope above me, and the slow lap of water on amphibian backs was
all the answer I got in return. Truthfully, it wasn't as soothing as it sounds.
Master Darque saved me from having to come up with another icebreaker.
"Where.." he began, the smell of brimstone becoming somewhat overpowering in the
closed environment of the rocky grotto.
"Are.." I did not like where this was going.
"MY CHILDREN?!?"
It's hard to make cool eye contact with a half-demon who eyes are glowing a
particularly intimidating shade of red. The light of the setting sun reflected off
the water, enhancing the vermillion glow of his ring, which might have been pretty in
other circumstances. As it was, without a satisfying answer, I decided to give Darque
the silent treatment. After all, it was working on me.
"Whoa! Whoa!" I yelled as I was dipped unceremoniously in the pool and jerked out just
as the crocogators snapped at my True Religion denim pants. I was pretty sure they
were torn, and not in the fashionable way I had paid extra for.
Sputtering, I tried to formulate the answer Darque was looking for. I mean, how was I
supposed to know where his kids were? It had been several turns since I'd last
checked.
Behind Master Darque, Floyd leaned casually against a wall, checking his watch.
"Hurry up, Riff. We've got dinner reservations at this amazing BBQ place, and I don't
want to be late."
It's rare for me to be speechless, and it always happens at the most inopportune
times.
Sidon stood up and stretched. "Here's a Win-Win. Let's go to dinner, and when we
come back, maybe he'll have remembered. If not, the crocogators will be even hungrier
and we can lower him slowly into the water. Whatever the crocs don't get, the piranha
will finish off. No bubbles. No evidence."
That Sidon, he's always so full of good ideas.
"Well, since you put it that way. I might have an idea." I paused for dramatic
effect but thought better of it when I saw Darque reaching for the rope. "But I'll
need to be more comfortable to tell you, and drier. And also, with my feet on the
ground, somewhere.. else." I smiled, waiting for the answer to my generous overture.
Darque reached for the rope.
"Where were we?" I spoke rapidly, matching my thought process. "Oh yes, in a far-off
shadow. Channel Master had just disappeared into the abyss wrestling a demon. Queen
Artemis was trying to figure out how to communicate with Channel Master. Nemesis woke
up. And Dragon Master just discovered that something wicked this way comes--"
"I know that part already," Master Darque wryly commented, eyeing the rope he now held
deftly in his off hand.
I smiled. "That's all you get for free. Let me down, give me a bit of time to
compose myself, something to eat, maybe a drink, and I'll finish the tale. In fact,
I'll go against my better judgment and make it a New Year's Resolution."
"And what happens if you don't? Lady Darque said I can't actually kill you. But
that's it. I can do anything else."
So many questions. How to answer them all?
"Can't I just give you, my word?" All three burst out in laughter. I laughed too; it
seemed the polite thing to do, and I'm always minding my manners around half-demons
and their posses.
"I could Dark Arena my whole team?"
Floyd looked up, alarmed. "Who would the children challenge? No, no. This has to be
a punishment, not a reward for you."
"Then I'm at a loss." The smell of brimstone was suddenly overpowering. Master
Darque looked at Floyd, who shrugged.
"We're late for dinner." And they left.
As I watched them leave, I began composing the tale in my head, wondering what I'd do
once I got down. And suddenly realizing I was very, very hungry and I hadn't even
heard which BBQ place they were going to.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hail and well met my fellow gladiators, tis I, your drunken Duelmaster, Bud the Wiser.
I could go on about my greatness and your...well...lack thereof, but my mind is
somewhere else today. Biff keeps bringing in new warriors and before I can even learn
their name, they are in a ceremonial cask and thrown in the river. So for fun I will
bloodfeud one of you, giving you a chance of taking the throne early in your careers.
I promise, I will go super easy and may even put my weapon in my off hand, as I'd like
to give you a fighting chance. And if I lose, well, we will do it again and this time
I may actually put effort into it.
Enjoy your days, as they will probably be short. And drink....DRIIIINKKKKK!!!!

Bud the Wiser
SPY REPORT
It is hot. It is cold. It is hot. No, wait! It is cold again! This has been the
weather around Telorinthe of late. Yeah, it is boring just talking about the weather,
but I really like it because it gives a new dimension to the fights. Slippery sword
hilts, creaking armor, and poor footing can make a regularly boring match into
something spectacular! We got to witness a few of those today, and I'm looking
forward to watching more! Let's see what happened today.
Bud the Wiser became Duelmaster last turn, but he did not get an invite to the Isle.
Perhaps he was lacking in the influence needed to get the Commission's attention.
Well, nothing gives you clout like keeping the Duelmaster's throne. Bud made sure to
keep his seat and deal with a little matter of revenge in the process. Bud the Wiser
bloodfeud challenged Dik-Dik in what can only be described as a lope-sided victory.
Bud remains our Duelmaster and Dik-Dik lived to see another day. It feels like a win
for everyone! Congrats to Bud the Wiser for defending his title, and he also got an
invitation to the Isle of the Eye. He leaves us next turn for advanced training and
immortality!
The most avoided team today is Conjure Up the Sun. As has been noted, frequent down
challenges will cause people to avoid you. Today, we find The Dragons avoiding them
teh most. The Duelmaster was our most challenged warrior this cycle, so it is good to
see the competitive juices are flowing in Telorinthe. As we have already mentioned,
the Duelmaster chose to bloodfeud this turn, so none of those challenges amounted to
anything.
There were many deaths today with a majority of them being "night fights" in the Dark
Arena. Eight deaths marred our fine arena with only 2 coming during the regular
games. First, the Dark Arena deaths came mostly from The Blue Marble. They sent 4 of
their warriors to face the monster crew, though they do hate it when you call them
monsters. As to the regular sands, Conjure Up the Sun lost a new warrior to Kame
House's Yokaza. We also lost an arena veteran, Ember, who left the arena with a 21-
12-0 record.
I have to wrap this up now. It has been a joy as always to share the news with you!
I hope everyone will be back next turn and enjoys the holiday season. I'm assuming
everyone has some type of holiday season as we do in Telorinthe. It may not be
exactly the same celebrations and traditions, but you have something! Enjoy it!

WINTER FACE-TO-FACE IN TEMPE!
We hope you will join us at our winter FTF in Tempe, AZ, January 13-15, 2023! It will
be held at our usual Embassy Suites Hotel in Tempe, Arizona (480-897-7444). Room
rates are $184.00 per night, 1-2 occupancy, which includes full cooked breakfast,
complimentary manager's reception, free airport shuttle, free parking and free high
speed internet. There's a fitness center, jacuzzi, and pool. The rooms are blocked--
