RIFF-RAFF CREW
"The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. But I have promises to keep."
I was feeling a little woozy already, and the swaying trees were having a
hypnotic effect on me. I drew the hood over my head and pulled my cloak tight around
me to ward off the chill. I closed my eyes and allowed White Lion to roughly adjust
the rope and tie it off in a firm knot at my waist.
"And miles to go before I sleep."
"What?" I asked, confused, opening my eyes.
"That's the next line," White Lion explained as he took up the slack in the rope
between us, holding it in a loop in his left hand. "Miles to go before I sleep."
"Next line to what? I just made that up now. It's good, right?"
White Lion looked uncertainly at Wailin' Van Halen and Sir Round, Captain of the
Queen's Guard. "Is he okay?"
"Carry on with the plan, soldier," Sir Round grumbled gruffly. White Lion and
Wailin' Van Halen nodded.
"This," White Lion indicated the heavy rope that connected us, "is so if
something goes wrong in the Chaos Gate, you can pull me out. The last thing I
want is to get caught In Between."
I didn't feel like I could pull anyone out of anything. I tugged the rope,
uncertain of the plan. "Maybe we should tie to Wailin' and Sir Round, as well?" I
offered, but they all laughed.
"That won't be necessary." Their mirth seemed misplaced, since just a moment ago
we were concerned we might lose White Lion forever in shadow.
"A moment before we begin." Sir Round reached into a non-descript bag on his belt
and pulled out a surprisingly large item wrapped in expensive purple cloth. Sir Round
carefully unwrapped the scrying crystal and held it up high so we could gaze into its
inky depths. Lady Darque smiled brightly as us, waving merrily. Over her shoulder,
Master Darque glared.
"Good luck, boys!" Lady Darque said cheerily. "Don't come back without my
children, or you'll wish you'd never been born." Master Darque said nothing, but his
eyes glowed brightly, and the ring on his finger pulsed as it rested on Lady Darque's
shoulder.
"Tell me again," I asked Sir Round as he covered the globe and put it safely away
in a bag at his side, "why you're coming?"
"Lady Darque doesn't trust you."
That hurt a little bit. "So if I try to bail on the mission you're gonna kill me?
Is that it?" I sized him up and realized yeah, he probably could do that.
"No. I'm not allowed to kill you." He smiled coldly. "I had to sign a contract
in blood." Sir Round reached back into the bag on his hip and removed a shiny black
pyramid.
"You got your Halbard in there, too?" I joked, but the joke fell flat.
"The Tome of Knowledge," Sir Round simply stated, as the jet black
Codex floated out of his flat palm, spinning slowly on two axes, it's
indecipherable writing glowing red in the evening gloom.
"Alexa," Sir Round commanded solemnly, "open Chaos Gate."
"I don't think that's gonna-" I started, then fell to the ground.
The Chaos Gate, whose presence I could feel but not see, exploded into the
foreground of my consciousness, knocking me figuratively and literally to my knees.
It was like being in a completely black room for a year, and then getting hit
simultaneously with high beams and hurricane force winds. I might have been in the
Chaos Gate; I couldn't tell which way was up or down.
"Entering the gate now," White Lion screamed in my ear, and I felt the rope go
taut at my waist. I felt Wailin' Van Halen's strong hands on my shoulders, realizing
a moment too late what the real plan was.
"Hey!" I exclaimed, as I was launched into the gate by the combined forces of
White Lion's pull, and Wailin's push. Too surprised to get nauseous (almost), I
stumbled onto the hard surface of the barren shadow to find White Lion quickly untying
himself and eyeing me warily.
"Still friends?" he smiled, showing his gleaming white fangs.
I stood up and looked around at the bare plain we stood on. A low hill rose
above the plain in the distance, and behind it a ridge with some kind of shrubbery.
The ground was trampled down as by hundreds of feet, and the air stank of sulfur. But
it was deserted.
"Where is everybody?" wondered Wailin' Van Halen.
"We're too late," I sighed. "Lady Darque is going to kill me."
SPY REPORT
I am not one to complain, but I wish the weather was not so fickle! From a day that is
bitter cold to one that feels like a mild summer afternoon offers too much variety for
my tastes. May winter feel like winter and summer feel like summer! Bah, too much
time talking about the weather when we have arena action to discuss. I don't know
about the weather patterns, but I do know about Telorinthe and all that took place on
her sands today! Let's talk about that instead, shall we?
Bud the Wiser leaves us and needed to relinquish the throne ins some manner.
Physicality made a play for the throne, but Bud the Wiser decided he wanted to go out
with a win. We still need a Duelmaster, so we switch to highest recognition points to
crown a new champion. Mariah matched up with Riley McCarron in what became our
championship fight. Mariah had the style advantage and took the opportunity to take
over as our Duelmaster. Congrats to Mariah, who is managed by General Bashur. The
General can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Mariah is the first Duelmaster
from the Super Brash Brothers stable in Telorinthe.
There were no deaths outside of the Dark Arena today. I guess that is a good day for
most gladiatorial stables. It is a bit out of character for our arena, but I believe
these things go in cycles. It could be an astronomical death rate next turn! That is
what I love about these games, the unpredictable nature of life and death. We look to
the gods for the answers, but I believe they too are bound by the whims of the Fates.

Bud the Wiser leaves us after the fights today to enjoy life on the Isle. There were
no new graduations. My records show more than a few gladiators approaching
graduation, but even these things are hard to predict. The Commission has a close eye
on all the games, but there have been some inexplicable calls and rejections for the
Isle in the past. So, I just sit and wait for the Commission to make official
announcements and try not to do too much speculating.
I will see each of you next turn. This turn felt . . . tame by Telorinthe standards.
There were great battles and epic action on the sands, but something felt off. Eh, it
could just be the winter chill on these small bones of mine. I much prefer the spring
and summer weather. I believe those seasons better fit my personality, don't you?
