TEAM SPOTLIGHT
*** Lindisfarne 789 A.D. Summer ***
"There be DRAGONS!" an unfamiliar voice, dry yet clear, pierced the fog, broke the
soggy silence of Aidan's morning chores. Startled, he dropped his bucket, and more
curious than cautious, sprinted toward the voice. He squinted into the mist as the
salt air filled his lungs, and there just past the farthest hut, as if blown ashore by
the sea winds, a skeleton's legs scraped along the entry path under a wispy cloud of
hair. Its sunken eyes roamed over Aidan's robe and cowl, and its stretched grin of
fear, pain, and fatigue relaxed into relief and a faint greeting while its
outstretched hands offered a sheathed knife in peace, "May God be with you."
Aidan smiled gently into the old man's clear eyes, put his arm under his, and accepted
the knife to lighten his load. "God bless you." Aidan prayed the man would not breathe
his last then and there, and glanced supplicating eyes to the mature, knowing look of
Father Cuthbert, who approached and tipped a wooden bowl of broth to the man's cracked
lips. "Welcome, Brother Bilfrith. That was far away and over the waves from our holy
island this day."
Brother Aldred rushed to drape a robe loosely around their guest's shivering
shoulders. Aidan stepped carefully, supporting Bilfrith into the nearest wooden hut.
Brothers brought buckets of water, built a fire, and Elder Finian brought in a bowl of
porridge, while a dozen more hooded robes gathered outside. The addled ancient creaked
out to them, "Windshear! LIGHTNING!! Fiery WHIRLIN' WIND!!!" His stormy eyebrows
insisted, and Aidan dared to wonder aloud and nod in earnest, as if he could sponge
away the trauma along with the weeks of dirt that now dripped and splashed out of the
tub back onto the ground.
For once, he was glad to be the youngest monk, to whom customarily fell these chores,
though he still breathed through his mouth to evade the hermit's stench as he shaved
his beard. Eager to know more, Aidan trembled from restraining his teenaged
excitement, but dared not question the old one in his depleted state. Again he turned
his inquiring eyes to meet the charitable gaze of Father Cuthbert, who answered his
unspoken question, "A great hunger spreads across the land and ravages our Lord's
house on the southern shore." The hermit, now robed, spooned porridge in silence while
all present in the warm hut contemplated Father Cuthbert's words. Aidan's young
imagination wondered at the fantastical miracles by which surely the aged sage had
survived, as he washed the blood from Bilfrith's knife.
SPY REPORT
So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. We now have a new top team for all of you guys
to dogpile on. THE DRAGONS now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep
it. A stormcloud is brewing over the SUPER BRASH BROTHERS guildhouse. Rumor says
any more weeks like this ones 3-2-2 may send the team to the Dark Arena. Coming up
with a solid 3-2-0 outing, BAD SIGNS has advanced 3 places in the rankings. THE
DRAGONS is no joke as it posted a 3-1-1 week advancing from 3rd place to 1st place.
Call it luck at the right time or bribes in the right hands, but the new team
LINDISFARNE scored a 5-0-1 record this week. Hey everybody, watch out for KAMIGAWA,
who flew up 23 points in the rankings after mashing AJA like a melon. Keep your eye
on this beast. And falling like a basher in the top ten was AJA, who dropped 18
points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with KAMIGAWA. Unlike most
arenas, MARIAH managed to get hers challenge off against the 14-10-0 BIG BIRD. Going
for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was THE FEROCIOUS FIVE's
BIG BIRD, who was turned away from the Duelmastership by MARIAH. Can you believe
they are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff?
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the TELORINTHE arena. Did
you hear that THE DRAGONS was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the
personal hygiene of THE DRAGONS' warriors, I'm not surprised! For those of you who
like math, try this one: THE DRAGONS + Weapons That go Boom = SUPER BRASH BROTHERS +
Avoid City. Well just about everybody wants a piece of FRED SMOOT, who was this
week's most challenged warrior.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Proving again that TELORINTHE is
not rated G, MARIAH of the SUPER BRASH BROTHERS slew the warrior BIG BIRD in a rather
bloody bout. Let's look for a bloodfeud. For those of you who missed it, Death
showed up, grabbed KID A by the ear and took him away to a place where he won't need
a coat. Well, the arena is no place for slow learners (and hopefully T.P.s) and
IRONTAIL demonstrated that very violently on VALKYRIE's body. The audience likes
blood and there was plenty of it covering DRAJ as she was driven to an early grave by
SHAMINO of the SUPER BRASH BROTHERS. And who needs the Dark Arena if you've got
MARIAH around? This week she decorated hers armor with BIG BIRD. Who's next?
Knowing when to use the right tactics at the proper time is a very important step on
the road to Duelmaster.
Well, there's the manager of the TELORINTHE giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that
'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Well, there goes another Spy Report.
