TEAM SPOTLIGHT
*** Lindisfarne 789 A.D., the month after the cross was stolen ***
"Forgive us, Lord," Aidan trembled. Shining gold, silver, and gemstones gleamed up at
him. He closed the lid, and in silence, he and Brother Aldred swung their shovels. The
dirt fell onto the chest of the holiest cups and crosses laying in a hole in the
ground under the altar. He and several monks placed the rest of the sacred treasures
into several large, padded chests lined with plain, but fine, linen, and carried them
out of the church past the well to the beach. They lifted the last chest onto the boat
and the Sun burned through the mist just then. "'Tis a sign, a blessing from the
heavens upon our arrangements for His earthly Mission to Telorinthe this day." Father
Cuthbert nodded his gentle smile to Brother Aldred, who pushed off from shore with his
staff.
Aidan nodded back, met the gazes of Elder Finian and Hermit Bilfrith seated across,
adjusted Bilfrith's knife in his belt, and stopped trembling. "Praise Him."
*** Telorinthe, that same morning ***
"WHERE'S THE REST OF IT?!!" He jumped up from the plush chair and glared at the
merchant's powdered pudge. Behind him, he heard the two Mordant deserters slide their
swords half-way out of their scabbards. "Not your fault we spent it all so soon, you
say. HAR! I say it's not OUR fault Telorinthe wenches cost so much!" "Aye! Them and
their stupid arses! HAR!" The guards held their hands steady on their swordhilts and
looked to the sweaty pig behind the desk for orders. "Heh, yes... well now... Let's be
reasonable; we gave you the cash part for the gold cross, and you promised us 'more
treasure where that came from,' I believe were your words, remember?" The silk-bloused
trader waved off his men.
"AND REMEMBER YOU PROMISED US MEN TO RAID THE REST OF THAT ISLAND!" He hated the sweet
stank of the rich puff's perfume. "Uh yes... well... and arrangements have been made
for you to guide our raiding party leaving... um... next week!" The two big soldiers
drew their heavy swords quickly the rest of the way and held them pointing at the
guards' throats. "Oi! He said that LAST WEEK!"
He drew his knife and leaped over the desk. "YAH!" No more delays! TODAY!!" The pig
squealed. "Please! Heh... ah... I just remembered there IS a resupply wagon of...
um... foodstuffs, departing for Lindisfarne this very morning!"
His bony hand sank into a frilly-sleeved, padded arm. "BETTER be, and you're coming
with us to make sure. Tell them to do as we say. Cross us, and I feed you these juicy
rolls from your neck!" He pushed and pulled the boneless man toward the stables at
knifepoint. "Oh! My! I assure you that won't be necessary. Let's all calm down.
Guards, do as they say!"
The Deserters exchanged wicked grins and tossed a perfume bottle at him. "You beggin'
runt BASTARD!"
*** Road to Telorinthe, the next morning ***
Mist blocked his view and the rhythm of his steps sent him searching his thoughts
instead: Bilfrith had KNOWN that scrawny raider he'd killed last month?? His brow
furrowed and he glanced at Father Cuthbert, who noticed. "What troubles you, Aidan, my
son?" Um... if... did Bilfrr... er... isn't killing a SIN?!" Father Cuthbert's gentle
knowing smile calmed him. "'Tis a sin to MURDER, to unethically kill." The Sun burned
through the mist just then. 'Twas a sign. His spirit eased, and he climbed up onto the
cart to look around and over the next low ridge, but he HEARD them first, their rough
voices raised. "RESUPPLY FOODSTUFFS MY ARSE!!" "OI! ALL THESE CHESTS ARE FULL OF
WEAPONS!!" Then he saw them: the slim thief was boney now, but the two soldiers who
had attacked their monastery last month were still big, and now they had four other
men and a fat merchant on a horse-drawn wagon. Then they saw him atop the cart.
"YOU!!" And the brothers walking alongside as they crested the ridge. "OI! THIS IS A
SETUP!!" "I SAY THIS TIME WE KILL THESE HOLY FART BASTARDS!!" He jumped down next to
Brother Aldre, who dropped the donkey's rope and grasped his staff with both hands. He
looked to Father Cuthbert who waved to the merchant while squinting at the shady
beggar holding a knife to the trader's throat. "God Bless you." The she-man screamed,
"Father Cuthbert! May God be with y---!" The boney beggar pushed the blade deeper and
the blade bit. Blood tricled red onto the rich man's white frilly blouse. 'Twas a
sign! Two of the merchant's men turned on the Deserters, joining Aidan and Brother
Aldred. The other two of the merchant's men, however, did not. "OH! LOOORD!" The
bleeding man crossed himself, cried, and looked up to the heavens, but Hermit Bilfrith
just grinned at the turncoat gangsters. "Any last prayers? Ready to die?" Slim boney
frowned at the now seven foes squaring off against his now only four men, pushed the
merchant back, leapt forward onto the horse, and whipped it into a panicked gallop
ploughing toward the group. The bloody trader rolled back into his wagon as it sped
forward. Aidan looked into the approaching creature's wild eyes and dove aside as the
horse crashed through the monks and into their donkey cart, upon which Father Cuthbert
stood balancing and steady. Aidan rolled and looked up in time to see Father
Cuthbert's staff swing and land with bone-crushing force, and the lifeless rider fall.
He stared at the beggar's caved-in head, then at Father Cuthbert, who met his eyes
with his gentle smile. "The Lord's Will be done." Aidan's smile broke through his
clouded face. 'Twas a sign! He pulled Billfrith's knife from his belt. "PRAISE HIM!"
SPY REPORT
Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! You have entered the only slow, no-tournament arena in the
land! We are grateful to have you with us in Telorinthe. I hope you have enjoyed our
games. My name is Ori Starbloom, and I will give each of you a grand tour of this
arena's happenings. Let's walk together through all the ups and downs experienced by
gladiators, managers, and spectators on this wonderful arena day!
0-2 Count has been the Duelmaster for a few turns now. There are rumblings that he
should give someone else a turn, but that is not how it works in the arena! Riley
McCarron attempted to dethrone 0-2 Count, but it was unsuccessful! Congratulations
again to 0-2 Count, who is managed by Dark Oracle. There are four different teams in
the Challenger Champions. This means there are four potential challengers to the
throne next turn. Which one is going to step up to challenge our Duelmaster? Will it
be another random? You have to come back and see!
The most avoided team today is Classics. Being the top team in the arena can cause
many to avoid you when the opportunity presents itself. They were mostly avoided by
the Super Brash Brothers. I am a bit surprised by this news since I hear most
managers say they avoid General Bashur as a regular part of their arena day. I
empathize, he can get testy at times! Gibbers is our most challenged warrior today. I
can usually see a pattern in the most challenged, but I don't see it with Gibbers.
Noting all the Total Parry warriors in the arena, I see the pattern now. Rubber Soul
challenged Gibbers and won in 3-minutes.
Congrats to Channel Master on the graduation of Riley Mccarron. He will have one
final fight in Telorithe before making the trek to the Isle of the Eye. Oh, it always
sounds so mysterious and magical. I guess any place where they raise the dead
frequently is quite magical!
