*** Fall 789 A.D., Telorinthe's High Town district at dusk... ***
"Elder Finian!" Aidan sprinted across the street, up the steps to the Great House,
slipped in the blood, and fell back onto the plate armor of the lifeless body at the
foot of the steps with a clang! He winced in pain but looked up in time to see Elder
Finian sheathing his knife as he slipped out from behind the huge doors and helped
Aidan up to his feet with a gentle smile.
Passersby spit on the corpse. "Murderous Mynx!" "Aye, that's one less of those shiny-
armored thugs!" "Two less! Last month it were that stinkin' Valkyrie!" The townsfolk
gossiped. "Those bloodthirsty losers are finally gettin' what they deserve, after
bleedin' this town dry, they are!" "Shush now! Sorcerer Kings and The Dragons put a
price on Shamino's head; it'll be YOU next!!"
Elder Finian began to chant the twilight hymn. Aidan, confused, still a little
alarmed, and cringing in pain, looked to Father Cuthbert crossing the street and
taking a deep breath through his gentle smile. "My son, you cry out in alarm and pain,
but when grief overwhelms us, often we are silent, and when we feel His deepest sorry
at the darkness, that is when, as now, we are moved to chant these hymns of praise and
joyful sadness that you have practiced with us these many seasons past."
Aidan nodded, wiped his tears, and joined his voice in polyphonics with Elder Finian
as they did at each sunset on the island. Father Cuthbert raised his voice to the
crowd gathering around. "EVEN SO! We listen to the many cries of the city! Each one
and all as a whole! And WE HEAR! Telorinthe's deep sorrowful SONG of SIN! Rising up in
joyful sadness! Our Lord is of ORDER! He is CALLED to Telorinthe as a DIVINE BALANCE
against the darkness. Even as winter comes, we LOOK TO THE SPRING! Amen."
Aidan glanced at the blood on Elder Finian's knife handle, and wondered. They turned
to the crowd. "PRAISE HIM!"
(Last year...
Telorinthe Commons guardsmen pushed through the townsfolk. "You're too late!" "They
got away that way!" Fingers and a few grins pointed toward every labyrinthine road and
alley leading away from the cobbled intersection. Many wearing heavy armor lay dead,
and many more had bled out all over their bloused uniforms, forming a macabre garden
scene of red and white carnations. "These Houses are getting out of hand!" The guards
shook their heads and spit. The townsfolk gossiped. "Brazen and powerful they are,
warring in the streets in the light of day!" "Rich is the prize! Telorinthe's valuable
weapons trade!" "Creating the demand for their own products they are, it seems to me!"
Shush now, we best mind our OWN business.")
Just before sunset that day...
Elder Finian smiled at Aidan and pounded on the huge doors. "We've time for one more."
Aidan smiled back, then looked up at the orange clouds above the sunlit tip of the
tower above, and back down at the deepening shadows between the buildings nearby.
Torchlight sliced out at them as the metal doors craked open, and just then Father
Cuthbert called Aidan to him from across the street where he and Brother Aldred had
just stepped out of a house. Aidan walked toward them, but his smile jerked into alarm
at a shout of anger, a ring of metal, and then a cry of pain from where he had left
Elder Finian. He spun around in time to see a man fall off the steps and splash into
the open sewer.
(Last month...
In her golden silks she floated across Telorinthe's bazaar. Over the din of barking
dogs, various tongues, blacksmith hammerings, complaints of the beasts of burden,
ringing bells and haggling vendors, to him. A thousand smiles she gave to the bloused
merchant free as he held his exquisite pieces. "So fine! You see? Like you, my Lady."
Excited to finally meet with him out in the open like this for the first time, she
squealed at his daring public caress of her hand, admonished him to be more careful,
and they laughed together a little too long. Strong hands grabbed her ankles and
pulled her down and under ths skirted table!)
* * * *
Townsfolk gossiped. "I heard she was found dead!" "Hush! She'll never be found. Not in
one piece!" "Aye, she did cuckold her shiny-armored lord, and with THAT fatty! (Love
is blind, eh?) Surprised they only jailed him!" Well HE wouldn't have killed his love,
would he now?" "SHE was in love, THAT were plain to see!" "You can punish who you like
when you're the head of a House, and your wife steps out on you, you can!" "Aye,
nobody stoppin' you, is there? But that doesn't make it right!" "Killing's a SIN!"
"Aye, that kind.")
That afternoon...
"May God be with you." The family smiled and thanked Brother Aidan and Elder Finian
for their prayers and visit. "Be true." The children's wide eyes glowed at his gentle
smile and kind voice. "Stay good." They waved at him and he turned and waved at
Brother Aldred and Father Cuthbert gliding down the steps of a Great House across the
street. They met, walked together, and Aidan glowed with their Good Work, but yearned
for more. "Let us minister to the poor, the sick, care for the least in the Commons!"
Father Cuthbert beamed his approval. "On the morrow, my son! This day we begin in High
Town, because 'a fish rots from the head.'" Aidan nodded and wondered.
(Last week...
The keys clanked against the cell bars. "You're free to go, Lord! Thank you for your
generosity. Sorry for the mix up. Please understand." The merchant nodded and smiled,
then smoothed his fat fingers over his blouse and walked out to the jailhouse steps
where a group was forming around a bellowing man in shiny armor. "DO YOU KNOW WHO I
AM?! What's your name? You'll beg me to die!" The head of the Great House brandished
his cuffed fists at the guards. The silky-bloused merchant slipped past. "HIM! HE'S
THE ONE YOU WANT!! How much did he pay you? I'll double it!!!")
That morning...
"God Bless you, my life savers! I was glad to be safe back in my chambers, alive and
well, thanks to you all! My road warrior days are over! And I trust you slept well? It
was the least I could do for you in return..." The pudgy merchant paused for breath,
readjusted the bandage on his neck, and pushed down with an effort upon the
upholstered arms of his padded chair to stand up from his desk as the monks entered
the golden room. Father Cuthbert looked around. "God Bless you, but we are accustomed
to simpler beds." He turned to Aidan. "Please go and bring Brother Aldred; he stopped
at the chapel downstairs." Aidan nodded, turned and left, and the guards closed the
door behind him. The head of the Great House sat back down, returned Father Cuthbert's
gentle smile, and smoothed his fat fingers over his silk blouse, then spoke in a
quiet, clear voice to the three elder monks who remained in the room. "So this thug I
paid is the only person who can testify against me about that lady... um... his thug
lord. He's nightwatchman at that Great House in High Town. Goes by the name of Mynx.
You understand. Grim, they nodded and gazed at each other. "The Lord's Will be done."

3-Time Duelmaster of Telorinthe
SPY REPORT
Come on in for an action-packed turn in Telorinthe! It has been a whirlwind of a day,
and I am just settling down to write about it! I prefer the arena days when a
champion is leaving for the Isle. It is always exciting to see their final bout in
the home arena. The installation of a new Duelmaster creates an air of celebration
too! How are these two things related?! Am I even making any sense right now?! How
many more times can I use the word "exciting" before I finish this report?! Wow! That
is a lot of exclamation points! I guess I better get into the arena news before I
overdo it. Okay, just one more!
0-2 Count has been our Duelmaster since turn 210. He has always been one to offer a
challenge, which is a great quality in a Duelmaster. I enjoy seeing the proactive
warriors in the arena. Today, 0-2 Count issued a challenge to the departing Lord
Protector, Riley McCarron. Riley took 2-minutes to finish the fight, but he left with
another win notched into his scabbard. Since he left, we needed to find a new
Duelmaster.
Onto our second talk about the Duelmaster's throne, we find a match between Kamigawa
and M. Chardinee. I'm not sure who is supposed to have the advantage in this fight,
and it probably doesn't matter. What does matter is that Kamigawa demolished M.
Chardinee and ended with the most recognition points. This makes Kamigawa our newest
Duelmaster. Congrats to Kamigawa, who is managed by Floyd.
Classics, who were inactive today, was the most avoided team. They were mostly
avoided by General Bashur's Super Brash Brothers. I wonder what happened to Classics
that caused them to miss today's games. Oh well, hopefully, we can ask them next
cycle. I know Lord Protectors are popular, but I would have never guessed that our
newest LP, Riley McCarron, would be this turn's most challenged warrior! I have
already covered how that one turned out, so I won't rehash it here.
Wasted Effort, our newest team in Telorinthe, gets some extra attention this turn, but
it is in the questionable portion of this report. They had the distinction of being
involved in both our death matches today. So, do you want the good news or bad news
first? I will go with the bad news first, which is Erik will not be coming back to
the guild house tonight. Okay, now the good news. Well, good news for Wasted Effort,
but not necessarily Lindisfarne. Boop executed Hermit Bilfirth, and I think we just
keep giving the hermits reasons to withdraw from society!
There were no new graduates this week but come back in 28 days to see if anyone else
gets the attention of the Gladiatorial Commission. I have to get going! There is so
much more to write, but the boss has put me on a word limit. How ridiculous is that?
I'm paid to write! I'm only listening to him because he is the one paying me to write!
I need to seek legal counsel and find a loophole! Oh well, until the next time, enjoy
yourselves and come back in 28 days!
