                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Well, now, this spotlight will be a little different than most Consortium
spotlights as it is, in many ways, a direct response to a diplo from the mighty STYX,
manager of Shadowborn. The spot also contains thoughts and ideas for any new-to-DM
manager.
First, let me apologize. I am old school. If I refer to DM or Duelmasters, I
really mean D2. It will always be DM to me. Three questions:

          1. I'm new. (implied "help me")
          2. How to design a knife fighter.
          3. Can a basher APA/F, GS be done?

Help is on the way. First, let me offer that there is some very good help
available, which you should already have. Do you have the C.I.C. RSI freely provides
newcomers with this very important document. If you do not, you need to request it
pronto. This document is vital, filled with great and necessary info, which will
answer many questions. If one does not have internet access, the C.I.C, is virtually a
bible.
Another wonderful source of information is the DM93 newsletter. Both Assur and
The Consortium Rep (Now it is me, Joe Jalopy.) provide spotlights and information,
including how they designed their current team, design ideas for certain styles,
strategy thoughts, how things work, and many other topics. The lower part of the
newsletter has many older articles written about DM. These newsletters are priceless
to a new manager. If one does not have internet access, (where all old newsletters can
be accessed on the RSI site) then perhaps a manager could request manual copies of the
most recent ones in DM93 from RSI.
If a manager has internet access, the best sites are the RSI site, Terrablood's
site, and Assur's own site. Have at 'em.
As to comments to questions 2 and 3. My first thought is trying to design a
specific type of fighter might be approaching it from the wrong direction. The
Consortium recommends optimizing the design of the five warriors on the roll-up team
and then choosing styles and strategies to best fit. (If you check the last two DM93
newsletters you will find The Consortium bdesign theory and parametersb posted in
a spotlight.)
A knife fighter? I will define that as a warrior wielding a dagger. A dagger is
a fine and quick weapon. It doesn't do as much damage as most all other weapons. It
weighs very little and has quite minimal stat requirements. (This is where having
that CIC or other info such as Terrablood comes in quite handy.) It is defined as poor
or ineffective at ASM or higher armor. (However, in an aimed-blow warrior's hand, the
dagger is far more effective for heavy armor.)
Another thing to consider is that the dagger is only fully suited to the striker
or aimed-blow styles. (That info, and most other discussed here is available in that
C.I.C.) Therefore, a Consortium Knife-Fighter would be a dagger-wielding striker or a
dagger-wielding aimed-blow. (Note: However that dagger is a fine back-up weapon for
most due to weight, and can be a decent off-hand weapon to those certain styles that
sometimes decide to fight with two weapons.) There are many possible designs for such
a fighter, (Again that Consortium Design Spotlight will help.) so I will offer two
simple possibilities for each style:

                         11-10-12-17-9-14-11 striker
                         9-9-11-15-15-12-13 striker
                         9-10-9-10-15-10-21 aimed blow
                         11-11-8-17-15-5-17 aimed blow

Now for that basher. Certainly an APA/F GS/- Basher is possible. Indeed, that
would be considered a typical beefy-bully basher. (And perhaps Assur who is considered
the Basher King in DM will offer his thoughts on this. His spotlight on bashers is
also in past DM93 newsletters.) To design such a warrior that has no
weapon/endurance/size/stat limitations, one needs to now those limitations. (Check
that C.I.C.!) The Greatsword has certain limits. (9+ size; 15+ strength, 9+ wit, and
11+ deftness) One would have also to make sure this warrior had sufficient ability to
carry all that armor and weapon weight; otherwise he would flop due to endurance.
(Again the C.I.C. Comes in handy.) The GS has a weight of 6. The APA/F has a total
weight of 18. (14 + 4), so this warrior must have a minimum carry of 24 or what is
defined as bC Carryb. To fight well (meaning swing enough and stand up long enough
b" as warriors can and do stop fighting and just stand there or fall down and give up
due to lack of endurance) this fighter must have at least normal endurance and
preferably good+. Doing the math, the design is limited as such:

          ST = 15+
          CN = 12+
          SZ = 9+
          WT = 9+
          WL = 15+
          SP = 3+
          DF = 11+

Adding those 7 minimums = 74 and subtracting from 84, leaves 10 stat points to
bplay withb. Therefore, we now have a basic design for an APA/F, GS wielding
basher. And we have enough bextrab points for some variety of design. I will,
then, offer two simple ideas:

                         17-12-9-15-17-3-11
                         15-14-12-11-15-6-11

Well, that does it. This is a good place to emphasize to any newbies to D2 that
DM93 is the place to ask questions and seek help. Both Assur and us Consortium Reps
are here to help.

Bash Bros Driving -- Design and Philosophy

Did you know there is a limited pool of warriors that you can possibly create?
There is. It is a fairly big pool, so unless you play a long time, you won't see
duplication of warriors often. Though clearly after adding 14 points you can make
more duplicate warriors. Even then, though, warriors will roll and perform
differently. What worked once may not work a second time (and vice versa).

Well here is how I created my team (yes a bit late, but still valid information):
13-5-10-10-13-6-13 -- This is a fairly flexible setup. Most managers love low spd and
con (Points are typically spent better somewhere else). Having both low can be a
little tricky, but even then it is considered a positive. I was in a risky mood when
I rolled this guy, so I went for maximum parry and gave him the WS style (the largest
skill based style that uses/learns parry). I end with: 17-6-10-11-17-6-17 WS. He went
1-3 in rookies before starting here in Noblish. I call this a risky setup because the
super low con on a more defensive style doesn't give him a clear path to winning.

12-12-11-10-10-7-8 -- Usually I do not add to make wit 15 (preferring 11 or 13).
This is another perfectly serviceable though unexciting setup. With the low-ish
speed, I'm looking at another hybrid. Nothing absolutely wrong with making an
offensive, but he starts slow and tough to give him enough decise (which comes from
wit, will, speed) to have a way to win. Because it is not a strong setup, I am only
going to look at the 'easier' hybrid styles (LU, WS, TP). Other than the will, he
looks like a great lunger to me, so... 15 will, 11 deftness, and 13 wit makes him 12-
12-11-13-15-7-11 with three more points to add. 15 str would usually be my first
choice, but it doesn't change his top end damage potential, so I went ahead and gave
him 2 more wit and the last point on con to end: 12-13-11-15-15-7-11 LU.

9-12-12-4-4-14-15 -- YUCK! This guy is terrible. Other than as a learning
experience, I'd tell most people to DA him right now. I have done way too many of
these guys as learning experiences, so I know what to do with them. 11-18-12-4-10-14-
15 TP. He hasn't performed as well as I'd hoped yet, butB he is pretty bad. (Hint
low wit & will typically means warriors stand around doing nothing -- Total Parries
can win when they do that better than any other style).

12-4-7-16-5-10-16 -- Clearly the prize of the bunch. As I mentioned earlier, I
was in a risky mood when I made this guy. The 'best' warrior (IMO) is: 15-4-7-21-10-
10-17 ST. This guy is pretty fantastic. Given how many warriors I run, though, this
design (as fantastic as it is) does not get my blood pumping. I went for the asking
for death: 12-4-7-21-7-12-21 AB. I got my wish as he went 1-1 and died in rookies.

6-12-11-10-11-11-9 -- Wow, another setup with very average numbers. He is one
poinit away from making an all 12's guy which is something that still entertains me.
But that isn't an option. I'd recommend either 9-12-11-13-11-17-11 LU or 11-12-11-11-
17-11-11 (lots of style options). I chose the latter design as a WS. Replacements
(two guys have died since I started this team): 8-13-11-4-13-8-13 -- Low wit, decent
physicals. Looks like a scum to me!!! 14-15-11-4-19-8-13 TP is a very nice set of
stats. Bump ST/CN/WL twice each and enjoy him. He will typically win a lot if you
can avoid AB's!

3-12-12-13-5-9-16 -- Low STR/WIL means you MUST choose a low endurance burn style
(unless you're crazy like some managers in this arena -- that would be me btw). Those
styles are PR/PS/AB/TP/ST (and sometimes BA). I went with the more extreme design in
order to show the arena a version of an open handed dodging Aimed Blow. 5-13-12-17-7-
9-21 AB. I don't love this particular design because the low strength severely limits
his strategy choices. But he does have a couple ways to win. If he rolls and fights
well, he'll not be a fun warrior to fight. He has endurance problems forever, so
he'll want to face warriors who go down fast (And I'll also tailor his strategy to be
a little less taxing)

                             Notes from the arena champ.

So, I am the 2nd C Car to be Duelmaster? Well, I have to admit, I think I am
better than Ford Granada. He is a pretty old clunker, while I am a sleek old
roadrunner.
My history..... somewhere around 1985, then living in Lenexa, KS, (KC area) the
Consortium Boss's wife said, "I want a jeep." He, having been outvoted 1-1, was left
out of the selection process, and merely said "nice car" when she made her choice. No
wonder I am Duelmaster.
Of all the 15-or-so autos in the C Car family, The Boss only selected the Dodge
Charger (he was unmarried, then) and the Ford Grenada. That was the end of his being
allowed to determine any Consortium family cars.
     I rest my case.

                                      SPY REPORT

Welcome NOBLISH ISLAND. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the
fights have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... What's with CAR
TROUBLES? He actually beat C CARS' KIA SOUL, and walked away with 14 more points
from the fight. Laughs were big at BASH BROS DRIVING while they watched SLOW clobber
DODGE CHARGER. It lost 7 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands.
NOBLISH ISLAND, set your sights on KHALHUMS DWARF. He'll be happy to entertain all
requests after defeating JEEP CHEROKEE. SLOW looked pretty Duelmasterlike as he took
NOBLISH ISLAND's top spot with 34 points. Now, what will JEEP CHEROKEE do? Wouldn't
it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into
the uses of convicted prisoners.
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... NOBLISH ISLAND thinks
SHADOWBORN and their 6-9-1 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up...
In my day, no team with a 6-9-1 would scare me off! What's the problem, C CARS? How
well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, SLOW! Don't make idle
boasts, they may come back to haunt you.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Here's some advice: study your opponent, master
many skills, fight dirty.
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. Are you
as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it
before you read it. Oh, well. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and
good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen
