THE ART OF ENHANCING WINNING

Your warriors are solid and are putting up a good fight, but just can't seem to win?
Perhaps this list of recommended Consortium actions can help?

 1. Always challenge and avoid. Use the challenge and if-challenged strategies on your
strategy sheet to manipulate fights in your favor.
 2. Challenge warriors you have beaten before and styles your warrior has the
advantage with. (Example: AB challenge TP, TP challenge LU, ST challenge SL, SL
challenge LU, etc.) This is something of a rock/paper/scissors game.
 3. Take advantage of blood feuds to enhance challenges. Be brutal! BF all four times
if to your advantage, The cretin killed your teammate after all.
 4. Avoid teams who seem to regularly beat you and teams with nearby warriors with
styles which have an advantage over your warrior. Avoid the team that just beat
    you last fight.
 5. Make your warrior do what his style does best. (E.g. STs get the jump, LUs dodge,
TPs parry and scum, SLs attack, etc.)
 6. Use high CN to your advantage by soaking hits and then later hitting and finishing
    a worn down opponent.
 7. Pay attention to where an opponent is aiming his attacks and protect that location
    on subsequent fights.
 8. Be bad! "Pick on" warriors with less skill, less experience, or lots of losses.
 9. Pay attention to fight history in your arena. Know which are tournament warriors,
sandbaggers, etc. with hidden FE. (Fight experience.) These tournament warriors
are likely highly experienced and highly skilled compared to your normal arena
warrior. Stay clear of them. (Not common in DM93, but common elsewhere.)
10. Use tactics appropriately--Decise to help you get the jump, Dodge to help you
avoid being hit, Slash or Bash to hit harder, Parry to focus on parry, Response to
    counter known decise users.
11. Dress to fit your strategy--naked is faster/quicker, plated is most protected and
    sponges best, but slower.
12. Do not overdress and excessively encumber your warrior. It greatly hampers ability
to carry and endure and even to fight properly
13. Watch fights carefully to find a favored weapon--one which you crit often with or
which you get lots of extra value hits. Use that weapon and maybe those similar to
    it.
14. Know your opposing manager's styles and methods. Try to fight weaker managers and
avoid those who just seem to win lots.
15. If your warrior is in a difficult spot in the rankings/arena listing, sit him out.
Don't fight if you do not have a good chance to win. (e.g., your 5 FE warrior has
jumped way up in the rankings and is surrounded by much more experienced warriors,
or your scum TP is surrounded by aimed-blows, etc.)
16. Phone a friend. Write with questions. Ask for help or advice. The right, helpful
person is likely to want to help you succeed.
17. Try to manipulate your fight so you match with an NPC. (Non-playing-character; RSI
    Stand-In.)
18. Send your warrior to tournaments. It gets hidden FE on his record and ups his
skill/stat level unbeknownst to those paying little attention.
19. Pay attention to fighting in your arena. Know whom is using strategies set on
maintenance and take advantage of it by challenging and adjusting your strategies
    to beat them.
20. Design warriors to win rather than to look godling-like. Sure, skills are
important, but maybe not as important as physicals--especially early on.
21. Take advantage of arena DM93. Read the spotlights, particularly those at the top,
as the latter ones can be outdated. Know your C.I.C. package info well or get info
from the Terrablood and Assur sites.
22. Cheer on your warriors. Stay excited! Yeah!

                                   Staying Alive

Death is part of dueling. This sport is dangerous! But there are things that a
manager can do to help keep his warriors alive. Nothing is a sure thing, and a
warrior with maximum hit points (21 con/siz/will) can still die. There is some luck
involved regardless, and luck can run both ways. But here are the experiences of
Assur with keeping warriors alive.

     1) WIN! It is impossible to die unless you lose a fight. In fact, some of the
suggestions later on may hinder your ability to win somewhat, so this should be the
first and highest priority in keeping your warriors alive.
     2) Wear armor. Any armor. Especially a helm. It is Assur's experience that
warriors with NO armor die way more often than warriors that wear armor. On the other
side of that, Assur has no conclusive proof that APA gives any additional protection
against death than ALE. It likely does, but the benefit from none to ALE is much
greater than ALE to higher armors. SO... ALE/L at minimum.
     3) Lower your KD, especially in desperation. There are tons of theories about
what different KD does, but nobody is completely sure. But Assur has found that is
does change your ability to kill and be killed. Want to live? Go low, really low.
Want to die? Go high, really high. Assur guesses that it changes your desire to keep
fighting (both winning and losing) and the arenamaster respects that and lets the
fight continue or ends it sooner.
     4) Protect HE and/or BD. If it is a warrior that Assur really wants to live,
he'll often protect one of these areas during minutes 1-6, and another in desperation.
     5) Hit Points, especially Size and Will. Smaller warriors seems to die more
often. it is also believe that Will is directly related to the stat the is checked
when your warrior enters the infirmary.
     6) Stay away from known killers. See that 3rd number in your opponent's record?
It means something. If that number is anything greater than 0, it means your opponent
has killed before. When that number is 2 or higher, it suggests that you may not want
to fight that warrior (or if you do, make sure you win).
     7) Look for managers that aren't killers. You will definitely see patterns over
time. Divide kills by wins for a team's career record. That is a great indicator as
to how bloodthirsty a manager is. .10 is a very high kill ratio. .05 is a manager
who probably tries NOT to kill.
     8) Stay away from huge mismatches. For whatever reason, it happens over and over
again. Young upstart challenges or is matched against very old veteran. The end is
an early demise for the arrogant young upstart.
     9) Fight warriors that aren't going to kill. The opposite of #6, but this goes
one further. Pure scum Total Parries that let a warrior run himself to exhaustion
don't kill very often (since they don't attack very often). However, see the final
item.
     10) Stay out of exhaustion. Warriors seem to die much more often when they are
completely exhausted. Your opponent starts hammering down the blows and your warrior
takes blow after blow.

As I began, you can't ensure your warrior will never die, but you can do everything in
your power to prevent it.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

So did Joe manage his team to a 5-0 on the way out? Or did his team suddenly rejoice
when Joe was sacked? I suspect the latter.

Well it is all over. How did things turn out at the end of the day?

                                      SPY REPORT

Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in NOBLISH ISLAND this turn, and
let's start with a look at some of the teams. It seems the training can make the
difference, as C CARS is pushed out of top team by THE FAMILY, who came from 3rd with
a 2-3-1 this turn. And let's see, SELFISH fought SAMMY THE BULL and gained 18 points
and contributed to BASH BROS YUPPIE's 3-2-0. SAMMY THE BULL has lost to SELFISH,
falling 9 points, while helping make THE FAMILY a 2-3-1 turn. And not without some
honor, SELFISH now claims the title and throne of Duelmaster of NOBLISH ISLAND. By
the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at
The Dripping Blade?
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or
hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
I like this place, NOBLISH ISLAND, the taverns have old wine, and young serving
girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet
again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in
NOBLISH ISLAND again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe
