                               ASSUR'S GUILD TO KILLING

Part of arena fighting is the fact that warriors will die. Last time I told you
how to optimize your chances to keep your own warriors alive. This time I give you
the 'best practices' if you want to KILL your opponent. It should be obvious that
winning fights is a requirement to kill. Some of the suggestions do not help your
warrior win. But when you do win, here are the things that will help you get more
kills. In the order that I believe makes a difference:

     1) Aim for HE, AB, or CH. There is nothing that will increase your kills more
than aiming for the areas that are the most important areas of the body. Arms and
Legs are for not killing. Head, Abdomen and Chest are for killing.
     2) Use High KD! High KD tells the arenamaster you want the fight to keep going
longer. He is less likely to end the fight early if one or both warriors are using a
high kill desire. I recommend 8+.
     3) Good or Great damage. Over the years, it has become very evident that killing
with good or great damage is far easier than killing with little, normal, or
tremendous damage. Tremendous damage warriors make opponents give up faster. Little
and Normal damage warriors can't do the kind of damage that causes wounds that kill. I
do not have enough experience to say anything about higher damage ratings than
Tremendous. I suspect they are more like tremendous damage, but I'm not sure.
     4) Some warriors appear to have a higher blood lust than others. Nobody can
prove this for sure, but you see some warriors go after the kill much more often than
others. This works both ways. You'll have warriors that kill more often than other
warriors (and try to kill more often). I also believe that this same stat makes
warriors more vulnerable to dieing. If true, these warriors are easier to kill.
     5) Use higher damage weapons. The easiest way to judge weapon damage is to look
at the weapon weights. Weapons that do slash or piercing damage are better than
bashing weapons. Be careful, though, of selecting a high damage weapon that is really
slow (HL comes immediately to mind).
     6) Look for warriors that don't wear any armor.
     7) Young fighters die much more often than experienced fighters. The number of
deaths in the first 5 fights is much greater than warriors in the Champion and
Challenger Champion classes.
     8) Challenge warriors with fewer fights than you.

Realize that killing requires a bit of luck, but these things can help you have a
high kill percentage. Anything over 10% (Kills/Wins) is a fairly high kill
percentage.
Finally, realize that most managers want to keep their warriors alive. By trying
to kill someone's warriors, you may be taking away from their enjoyment of the game.
I'm not saying you should not try to kill, but realize what you are doing. We all
know death is part of Duel2. But some managers like it less than others.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Clearly we deserve the throne and as is rightfully true and good the commission
arranged for our fine team to gain the throne. Some people call me selfish, but they
are either hypocrites and/or jealous (because they are also selfish). I'm just
willing to admit that I look after good old #1 first and foremost. Why not be honest.
Clearly nobody matters as much as me anyways, so why shouldn't I meet my own needs.
Not like anyone else will.
We'll see if the commission also makes my life easy and gives me a matchup that I
can beat!!!

                                          -- Selfish

                                      SPY REPORT

I can't believe the violence in NOBLISH ISLAND! I still haven't told Mom I'm
writing Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... MVP award for
SUPERFICIAL? BASH BROS YUPPIE's proud of him after beating ITALIN JOE and getting 16
points. Talk about yer major upsets! ITALIN JOE's match with SUPERFICIAL cost him a
loss of 6 points! Our last turn's Duelmaster has lost, folks, lost to M. CHARDINEE,
and SELFISH has made the way for a new Duelmaster! RAMIAL of LOST LEGION takes
SELFISH's place. (But seriously, who could ever take the place of SELFISH? Oh, all
right.) Who was the wiseguy that said NOBLISH ISLAND's Duelmaster was paying for
drinks at The Welcome Wench? Don't look at me!
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. The warriors
of BASH BROS YUPPIE must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you
guys know something that I don't? I don't know what OCCUPATIONS' been doing. They
certainly haven't been accepting many fights from BASH BROS YUPPIE, that's fer sher.
Like, is FAST CARS popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of NOBLISH
ISLAND! He's got a 1-1-0, is that good?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All NOBLISH ISLAND ever talks about is
fighting! Me, I'm more laid back. PLUMBER bloodfeuded (is that a word?) SPINX for
revenge over some guy's bad fortune. Was it really worth it? What if they had a
fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Papa Joe, I hate to disappoint you, but I am gone. Kaput! I am sorry about Mac The
Knife, and I don't blame you for your anger. You won't be able to take it out on me,
so, what the heck, beat up on Assur. (wink) -- Ford Pinto Wagon (long gone, rusted
out, and sold for parts)

Ah, shucks, Spinx of Lost Legion. Did you have to kill my Game Show Host? I was hoping
he could make me a lot of money. Dang! Now, you know that killing gives the other team
four fine chances to bloodfeud your killer. Right? I wish!
But the policy of any Consortium affiliated team here in Noblish is that:
     We will not bloodfeud.
     We will not downchallenge.
The Consortium will not allow us to attempt to take advantage of newbies to D2 in such
a manner. Therefore, you need not beware. -- Agent of Occupations, Consortium
Affiliated

You killed me fair and square, Spinx. Well done. My replacement will be named Referee.
-- Game Show Host (or ghost thereof)

Superficial, har, har. I hope that hurt! Count that 1-0 for Occupations. (You
listening, Assur?) -- Proctologist

Oh, my, Wasteful. You beat me and tied the Occupations/Bash Bros brawl. How mean of
you! -- Engineer

Then along came The Model. Ta da! And put Arrogant in his right place - down on the
arena floor on his back and rump. Tsk. Tsk. What is that now?

Frank Da Fixer, you can always count on me to be the REAL fixer. -- Plumber

Noting Assur's Axiom -- the only way to assure not dying in the arena is to win. Just
do it! -- Agent

Selfish and Assur, or is that Selfish Assur? I greatly look forward to your Duelmaster
Column. Indeed. -- Agent

Health. Humility. Honor. -- The Consortium Motto

Arrogant -- We found out that Ford Pinto Wagon is a lost brother of yours, ha!ha!ha!
We have not forgotten about our fallen brother Mac the Knife; you shall find out the
wrath of the family one at a time, starting with me (Papa Joe), you will find out what
the word Travisty really means, your blood will be washed away forever. -- Papa Joe,
the Family

Lost Legions -- I bring you no harm, I have something for you to think about, how
would you like to form an alliance? I feel we can bring fear to all that come to the
Arena. I believe with our power our might, we will destroy anything that comes. You
double cross me, I will make sure you vanish into the sands, and your team suffers
great pain. -- Papa Joe, the Family

The Family -- I bathe in fires of destruction and revel in the screams of the
defeated! Only blood can even the scales. Then and only then will we think to ally
or maybe not only the gods may know. -- Atticus

Occupations -- My apologies, my warrior crossed a line. Never did I think him quick
enough to land a fatal blow. A price must be paid. 10 full hawks are all he has, so
I include the smallest finger from his off hand enjoy. R.I.P. Game Show Host. -- Kage,
Lost Legion

All -- Those on my team taht have failed me must pay. Five lashing to the one that
lived. Come all to see the brave humble outside the Dripping Blade. Managers, first
round on me. -- Kage, Lost Legion

Agent -- Not surprising. 1-2 versus your overachievers! -- Assur
P.S. I happened to catch that death of a game show host, though. y a basher, of all
things! Most enjoyable. If a warrior has to die, why not a Consortium warrior!

Lost Legion & The Family -- We (Assur who runs Bash Bros Yuppie andAgent (A Consortium
manager) who runs the Occupations) are here as mentors to help assist your beginnings
(or re-beginnings) to this game that we and many others love. Note that we are NOT
new players, with extensive experience. While we are not allowed to use the Dark
Arena while here, both of us encourage you to be willing to use it! If you question
whether you should, ask us and we will give advice. Sometimes little changes can help
a warrior in a great way.
That said, here are some 'basic' tips on most common practices (Note that
exceptions are all over the place):
Pure Offensives (Strikers (especially), Bashers, Slashers, and sometimes others):
These warriors don't usually have very many hit points, want to do at LEAST good
damage, have higher wit (11-21 typically, more is better), some endurance, and the
most important skills are decisiveness, attack, and initiative. Wear light or no
armor and run 10-10.
Pure Defensives (Total Parries; other styles that 'can' be defensives include
Parry Strikes, Parry Ripostes, Wall of Steels, Parry Lungers, Aimed Blows, and
Lungers). Parry versions want strength, constitution, will, size < 14, and 11
deftness (11 is perfect, don't want much more so you have points for the other). Wear
lots of armor, run low numbers, the parry tactic, and often use shields.
Dodge versions (Lungers, Aimed Blows) are a more advanced topic and more varied
in design. Strategy typically includes very high activity level and the dodge tactic.
More commonly they fight with a pure dodge strategy for part of the fight and then
become hybrids.
Hybrids: (any style, but most commonly Lungers, Wall of Steels, Parry Ripostes,
Total Parries, and Aimed Blows): Assur runs three articles talking about different
types of hybrids and that is far from exhaustive. Design is important because you're
trying to win with a combination of offense and defense. Another advanced topic.
All styles are not equal: Total Parries (pure defensive) and Strikers are the
easiest styles to win with. \Lungers and Wall of Steels have the highest start skills
so that gives them an advantage (though make sure they have at LEAST normal
endurance). Aimed Blows are eventually the best style. Design them with 17 or 21
deftness. Parry Lungers and Parry Strikers typically the hardest.
     Good Luck -- Assur
