A Mail-In Tournament Scenario or
Orange Is The New Tournament Aimer or
Tournaments Are Easy, Exciting, & Fun
Perhaps you have heard about tournaments and you thought "I think that might be
fun; I wish I were experienced enough to fight a warrior in a tournament, but I am
uncomfortable doing it since I am but a newbie." Well, you should know that entering
is simple; anyone, even an inexperienced manager can do it; and it is so much fun that
you don't want to miss out. Let me tell you all about tournaments and give you a real
life example of a warrior I entered from Noblish Island.
Key things you will learn in this example:
1. 4 tournaments plus their type and timing
2. FE (Fight Equivalents)
3. Tournament Prep
4. Some basic Consortium aimed blow strategies
5. What a true godling aimed-blow looks like.
So, on to the spotlight........................................................
The purpose of this spotlight is to give newcomers to D2 a sense or feeling or
information about tournaments, in this case a Mail-In tournament. Hence, Orange of
Distinct Colors, a current Noblish Island warrior, was selected as the guinea-pig.
So, a tournament. Four times a year RSI holds tournaments. Winter and Summer are
Face-To-Face Tournaments where managers compete on-site against each other and can
change strategies each and every fight if they wish. The winter Face Site has always
been in Tempe, AZ (the RSI Home Site) while the summer event in held in varying
cities east of the Mississippi. (The last one was in Tampa, FL and summer of 2020 will
be in Cincinnati or Minneapolis -- COVID-19 allowing it.) (Note: COVID did not allow
it and the FTF Tournaments became Mail-In Tournaments until such time as the FTFs are
again safe.) The Mail-In Tournaments are done completely via mail and managers submit
predetermined strategies for their entered warriors. (Each warrior is allowed a
primary strategy and also a secondary strategy which will be employed against chosen
selected styles.) It is very easy to enter as all one needs to do is send in a
strategy sheet via mail or fax. Simple! Both events cost $7.00 per warrior and are
great fun. Warriors compete in classes, thereby allowing similarly experienced
warriors from all arenas to be fairly matched with each other. In tournaments, a
warrior's chance to learn skills or earn stat increases is half that in normal arenas.
Supposedly, the chances of dying are also halved.
I entered Orange of Distinct Colors from Noblish Island in The January 2021
Mailer. Prior to fighting Orange in The Mailer, I wanted to give him the best
possibility to succeed. I wanted to prepare him for the Apprentices class. Classes are
segregated by FE (Fight Equivalents). What is a fight equivalent? Each arena fight
counts as one fight and any tournament fights count as a half fight. The Apprentices
Class is for warriors with 1-4 FE. Having no tournament fights prior, I wanted to
"max" Orange for Apprentices. By "max" I wanted him to fight with the maximum FE
possible in that class. By doing so, I would optimize his chances to succeed.
(Warriors improve via experience and skills or stats earned. Most all warriors
fighting in tournaments are "maxed" at the top FE for their class.) In this, I failed.
Hence, Orange went into the Mail-In Tournament Apprentices Class with only 2 arena
fights (2 FE, instead of the desired 4).
Pre-Tournament, Orange looked like this: 17-4-6-21-10-5-21 Aimed Blow. Poor
Endurance and Good damage. Ambidextrous (which adds one attack skill to his base). A
master's rating in Attack. Most managers would define this as a "godling" or a very
fine warrior design. (Note: new aimed-blows are known to die easily and quickly, both
in the arena and in tournaments -- especially ones with very little CON.)
Orange did decently in the tournament, finishing 3-3 against the best Apprentices
in the land. He also learned/trained well, earning 7 skills plus he came out alive!
Perhaps a general fight-by-fight summary would prove of value?
First, let me list for you the two strategies I chose and my training regimen I
mailed in for Orange. (Note: In no way should these strategies be deemed as common or
starter strategies for aimed-blows as aimers are a special, odd, and differing breed!)
Normal strategy:
7- 7- 7- 6- 6- 5- 7 ASM/S
10- 6- 6- 5- 4- 3-10 0-8 = EP & FI
2- 2- 2- 2- 2- 2- 2 9+ = LO
n- n- n- n- n- n- n
D- n- n- n- n- n- D bu = none
(dodge in minutes 1 and desp)
Alternate strategy: (against TP)
7- 7- 7- 6- 6- 5- 7 ALE/L
3- 3- 2- 1- 1- 1-10 0+ = SC & FI
7- 7- 7- 8- 8- 8- 2 bu = SC (in primary hand)
n- n- n- n- n- n- n
S- S- S- S- S- S- D
Training Regiment = all skills
Strategies, armor, weapons, backups, tactics, alternate strategy against,
training, etc, etc are all variable, and explaining MY choices or normal Consortium
choices would require a much, much longer spotlight. Perhaps another day.
As to Orange's tournament action:
Fight one against a sz7 ambi AB (apl/h lo/-) -- Orange jumped him and one-swing hit
him for the win. Orange learned two parry skills.
Fight two, a lunger sz6 (ale/s sh/-) -- Orange swung first and hit, then Orange took a
second swing -- a crtitcal hit -- and finished the fight. Orange earned a riposte
skill.
Fight three, a striker sz6 (apl/f sc/-) -- The striker jumped Orange and one-hit him
with the scimitar to finish it quickly. Orange learned a decisiveness skill.
Fight four a ripper (parry-riposte) sz 8 (asm/-, sc/-) -- Finally a longer fight!
Orange swung twice and hit. The ripper riposted and swung wildly. Orange threw a
critical hit and knocked the ripper down. With the opponent on the ground, Orange
threw two more critical hits to finish him off. Orange learned a parry skill. (Hey, 3-
1; maybe Orange is going places!)
Fight five against a sz6 lunger (arm/l, lo/-; with the lunger lacking the WIT for the
LO) brought Orange's thoughts of glory back to earth! It was all the lunger's fight,
with him swinging four times, and Orange dodging one and parrying one, but the other
two hurt. Orange learned a riposte skill.
Fight six ends Orange's tournament as he opposes a sz3 apl/l fi/- aimed-blow. It was a
great, but sad, fight and it went something like this: bad guy punches, orange dodges;
bad guy kicks and Orange parries with the epee giving bad guy some damage; Orange
ripostes and swings, but bad guy dodges; Orange throws a critical, but the bad guy
crit dodges; bad guy grabs the initiative and makes a critical punch which connects
with Orange's jaw and the fight is called. Orange learned a defense skill.
I am pleased with the 3-3 and the skills learned. It is not at all a bad result for a
two-fight warrior in the Apprentices class. Presuming, I can keep him alive, Orange
will very likely fight in more future tournaments.

DISCOVER YOUR NICHE
Long years ago, when I first began playing Duelmasters, before the game was renamed
Duel 2, during my first few turns of training at Noblish Island arena, it became more
and more apparent to me that my ability as a manager was vastly inferior, when
compared with the other new players in DM 93.
However, after 3 or 4 turns of play, it was extremely evident to me that I enjoyed
playing the game, no matter how pitiful my won/loss record was in the field of thirty-
plus stables and managers.
I soon realized that I did not have to wait ten turns before branching out to play in
other available arenas, so I took stock of what I was able to afford, before expanding
my dueling budget.
First thing I did was to order new team rollups, so I ordered three, being so new to
the game and not realizing that RSI would charge me five dollars per sheet for a total
of fifteen dollars, but when I got my blue sheet with my account information, there it
was in plain sight, the charge for 3 new team sheets.
Undaunted and a bit wiser in regards to new team rollup costs, I decided that I could
save money by running stables in three different slow arenas for half the cost, rather
than running new stables in three regular arenas.
Another plus at the time was, that by running stables in three different slow arenas,
I could devote more time to learning some basic nuances of creating and running a
variety of new warriors, all at a slower pace, while I kept training my original
Milchamah stable in DM 93 every two weeks.
While I was still in Noblish Island training my orginal stable, enjoying the slower
pace of my new arenas, but becoming a bit impatient regarding the turn-around time, I
ordered another new team sheet and decided to place a new team in DM 5 Kaltos.
I had browsed the online newsletters, looking at the sizes of the various arenas, plus
the due dates for each one, which is why I chose Kaltos arena, because the due date
worked well with my other arenas.
However, I had run out of creative names, so I named the team DA DEADLY DUCKS and each
of the original warriors I named DEATH DUCK, assigning all five the numbers one thru
five. Only DEATH DUCK 1 managed to graduate, as did DEATH DUCK 7, before I retired the
team to another transfer arena.
DEATH DUCK 1 was a Basher and DEATH DUCK 7 was the only Piker that I have ever
graduated. Her graduation notice was a bit of a disappointment, when I discovered that
her favorite weapon was a Small Shield, but I digress down memory lane.
I had sent out personal ads to a variety of arenas, explaining that I was a newbie
manager, looking for a good arena to transfer my team to, after graduating from DM 93.
I was contacted by a diplo note from a manager named Sweetie Pie, who invited me to
come to DM 33 after graduating and bring some of my new player friends once they
graduated, because some veteran managers were migrating stables to DM 33 to get it
built back up.
So, I had begun recruiting my fellow managers in the DM 93 personal ads, to transfer
their graduating team to DM 33, before I started a new stable in Kaltos arena.
So, when I started a new stable in DM 5, a manager named Snuffy greeted me in the
personal ads and sent me greetings from Sweetie Pie. I was so thrilled that another
manager was reaching out to me.
That was my first introduction to The Consortium.
I encourage all you new players to pick his brain for advice and pay special attention
to what he writes in his articles here in DM 93. He is very approachable and willing
to help you to improve as a manager, as long as you are willing to invest your own
time and effort to improve yourself.
As I was discovering my niche so to speak as a new manager, it was probably the option
of writing team spotlights that really kept my interest in this game.
Not everyone likes to write, but I enjoy writing, so I discovered my niche by writing
stories to help entertain the other managers who were faring much better on the sands
of battle, than I was seeming to be doing on the arena sands at the time.
Writing became my own personal trademark, so somewhere along the way, I concluded each
of my team spotlight stories with the following quote: "May Your Blades Be Sharp and
Your Wits Sharper!" -- Hammer the WordSmith
Another niche that I discovered myself to be well suited for, after getting my feet
wet and developing my reputation as an arena writer, while improving my gladiator
fighting over a period of time, was by hosting contests in various arenas.
I did this to attract some of the most competitive managers in Alastari to compete
against one another in quest of prizes that RSI allowed me to offer in the various
contests that I hosted over the years, so that I could enjoy their friendly banter in
the personal ads, plus hopefully gain some insight into how they played the game,
especially when I first started hosting contests.
Just recently, I came back to Duel 2 less than a year ago, actually to participate in
a contest in DM 45 that Master Darque was hosting, so the desire to host another
contest was stirring in my heart.
The greatest contest that I had ever had the privilege of hosting was the Morya
Madness. It was held in DM 28 over a period of 28 turns, which made it the longest-
running contest to ever be run in dueling history, as it took just over two years to
complete in that slow arena.
Shortly after my recent return to DM 45, I made arrangements with RSI to host a
contest in DM 5, complete with various prizes, that became known as the Kaltos Kaos,
which begins in February and ends next January, a total of 25 turns.
It is to be my "last hurrah" so to speak, as far as hosting dueling contests. It
emulates the best parts of the Morya Madness, lasting almost a year, rather than over
two years, as the Morya Madness did.
I am not saying that you have to run stables in several arenas, or be a prolific
writer in the Duel 2 newsletters, or that you even have to host a contest(s) to enjoy
this game.
But what I am saying is, as you develop your managing skills, while here on Noblish
Island during your ten turns of training, you do have the potential inside of you to
discover your niche on the arena sands!
Enjoy this game and above all have fun!

SPY REPORT
I can't believe the violence in NOBLISH ISLAND! I still haven't told Mom I'm
writing Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... Too bad, BASH BROS
QUARANTINE, but PRAE DELORE SINCERAM was just too good to be stopped. Cut this out
and put it in your scrapbooks, DISTINCT COLORS! 'Cause they got 4-1-0 and moved up
to 4th! MVP award for ORANGE? DISTINCT COLORS' proud of it after beating CHARLENE
WAYE and getting 16 points. Talk about yer big time losers! CHARLENE WAYE got
smashed by ORANGE, and lost 8 points! This Duelmaster is like something else! PETS
stopped VETERAN MERCENARY dead in his tracks! Is the Duelmaster really being a real
snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? The warriors of DISTINCT COLORS
must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something
that I don't? Is there some deep dark secret why BASH BROS QUARANTINE's been
avoiding DISTINCT COLORS so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Can BASH
BROS QUARANTINE's FRIENDS be more popular than me? He was challenged the most, but
is that really the same?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Hey you guys, don't you think your
families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really
should stop. I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

I can't talk to you about the design of my team, because I don't seem to find any
