Assur's Guide to Pure Offensives
Offensives are the easiest type of warrior to design, run, and master. The idea of a
pure offensive is that you are going to come out fast and overwhelm your opponent with
your offensive abilities.
1) Design
When you are making a pure offensive, the things that matter most are:
Damage, Endurance, Attack skills, Decise skills, Initiative skills, and wit.
While other attributes and skills are nice, especially if you want to try fighting
differently, the pure offensive doesn't care much about them.
Damage is dictated by Strength and Size.
Endurance is dicated by Strength, Constitution, and Will (especially Will)
You get attack skills at:
Str: 5, 7, 15, 17, 21, 21 Wit: 5, 7, 9, 11, 11, 13, 15, 17, 21, 21
Wil: 5, 7, 15, 17, 21, 21 Dft: 5, 7, 9, 11, 11, 13, 15, 17, 21, 21
You get decise skills at:
Wit: 5, 7, 17, 21 Wil: 5, 7, 9, 15, 17, 21 Spd: All even values
You get init skills at:
Siz: 5, 7, 15, 17, 21, 21 Wit: 5, 7, 9, 11, 11, 11, 11, 13, 15, 17, 21, 21
Spd: 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 21 Dft: 5, 7, 7, 15, 15, 17, 21, 21
Wit helps you learn more skills and as you'll notice contributes to each of the skills
that you care about (attack, decise, and init). The only other thing to seriously
consider is your weapon selection.
Damage is probably the most important attribute, followed by decise and then attack.
Wit is also very important as you need to learn your offensive skills enough to keep
up your ability to overwhelm your opponents. One of the most common Bloodgames
designs for pure offensives is 17-3-3-21-21-8-11 (when a manager can dictate his
warriors' exact designs)
2) Style Choice
Strikers are the 'best' pure offensive style. They conserve endurance, learn the
best skills naturally (decise and attack), and can use all the good weapons. Their
only real negative is that they have fewer attack skills than the other pure offensive
styles.
Bashers are the next best choice. They learn the right skills (but learn attack
more than decise) and have more attack than strikers. However, their weapon choices
are not as good as strikers (which makes damage rating very important for bashers) and
do not conserve endurance like strikers.
Slashers are the last of the styles that are naturally a pure offensive. They do
not learn decise fast naturally, though, so while they are great with their attack and
initiative, they are generally slower than their counterparts. They have access to
most of the best weapons in the game, but do not have a great speed weapon.
Parry Strikers can also be run naturally as a pure offensive. They learn lots of
decise skills, but learn parry skills to go with it. They can use almost any weapon
and can make fine pure offensives.
None of the other styles learn decise naturally, so while it can be a favorite
learn for any other style, you can't count learning them, so speed can be an issue.
Other styles' strengths are not in the pure offensive category, but there is nothing
wrong with running other styles as pure offensives. Recommend HIGH WIT for these!
Many managers run Lungers as pure offensives and because of their natural high
favorite rhythms and high skill base it works just fine. But it is Assur's opinion
that Lungers' natural strengths do not make them the best choice for a pure offensive.
Aimed Blows with their incredible attack and endurance conservation are also often run
as pure offensives.
3) Weapon Selection (with requirements)
The following are my recommendations. Feel free to try other weapons.
Speed Weapons (best chance to attack first):
Short Spear (9 Str, 5 Wit, 7 Dft)
Quarterstaff (11 Str, 9 Siz, 11 Wit, 11 Dft)
War Hammer (13 Str, 5 Wit, 7 Dft)
Hatchet (7 Str, 5 Wit, 7 Dft)
Damage Weapons: (When damage is what you really care about)
Battle Axe (15 Str, 7 Wit, 9 Dft -- If using an off-hand weapon, also 9 Siz)
Scimitar (9 Str, 11 Wit, 11 Dft)
Broadsword (11 Str, 9 Wit, 7 Dft)
Halberd (17 Str, 9 Siz, 9 Wit, 11 Dft)
Greatsword (15 Str, 9 Siz, 9 Wit, 11 Dft)
Other Good All Purpose Weapons:
Longsword (11 Str, 13 Wit, 11 Dft)
Maul (15 Str, 9 Siz, 5 Wit, 7 Dft)
Great Axe (13 Str, 9 Wit, 11 Dft)
Dagger (3 Str, 7 Wit, 7 Dft)
4) Strategy and Tactics
The most common strategy used by pure offensives is run hot. Hot means high
offensive effort (OE) and activity level (AL). 10 OE and 10 AL is very common.
Realize the hotter you run, the faster you will use your endurance. Most of the time
Assur lowers Activity level before Offensive Effort when trying to lower from the
tried and true 10-10-x strategy.
If you're fighting a pure defensive, they want you to use all your endurance, so
running this hot might not be a good idea. Running 1 AL is not a bad idea (they are
not going to try to attack you).
Also realize that every warrior has a favorite rhythm (favorite OE and AL) which
will make them fight 'better.' Some warriors don't like running super hot (or aren't)
as well suited to run super hot. Until you get to Advanced Duel2, you won't know for
sure what your favorite rhythm is. But you can experiment and sometimes get a feel
that your warrior runs very well as certain numbers. For each warrior you run, you
must decide if favorites will help you win more than using the 'tried and true'
strategy.
I am not a fan of using tactics. They hurt you as much as they help you. That
said, the Decise tactic is great for making you faster. It is easily countered by a
warrior using the Response tactic. I've won ridiculous fights (new warriors beating
20 fight warriors) by using the response tactic. The response tactic is a great way
to counter another offensive using the decise tactic.
I do not use Bash, Slash, or Lunge very often.
5) Armor
No armor is recommended. But death is a high risk. Even using the lightest
armor (ALE/L) protects against death in a major way compared to no armor. If you know
you're fighting someone faster than you, wearing armor may very well be a good idea
(While who attacks first is dictated largely by luck, I'd rather not depend on luck if
I have another choice.)

CHALLENGE AND AVOID
A STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE
Challenges, and their partner "avoids" are underused strategic weapons. Don't be
left home without them!
An avoid is an attempt to prevent a warrior from challenging you. Why allow a
warrior the advantage of selecting you for a match? Why allow a warrior to decide on a
special strategy just for you? One great thing about avoids is that you may avoid THE
WHOLE TEAM of any warrior you want to avoid. You are allowed to avoid two whole teams.
There is no use double-avoiding as it does not improve your chances to avoid that one
individual team.
A challenge is an attempt to fight a specific warrior. Why not attempt to fight a
specific warrior of choice? Why leave the opponent selection to the MUGS (match-up
gods) or, worse yet, an opponent who chooses/challenges you? You are allowed to
challenge two warriors. You may, indeed, challenge the same warrior twice. (Double
challenge) It DOES improve your chances of a match to double challenge a same warrior.
Of utmost importance is to understand that you must challenge and avoid NUMBERS,
not names. Challenge warrior NUMBERS. Avoid team NUMBERS. Challenge individual
warriors; avoid whole teams.
No challenge or avoid is 100 percent effective. Challenges can be further
enhanced by winning a TV or TC (Tournament Victor; Tournament Champion) in a Mailer or
Face-to-Face Tournament. The TV/TC effectiveness lasts six months. So, in a normal
arena, the warrior who won the TV gets 12 or 13 turns of enhanced challenging. The
most effective challenge, The Blood Feud, is nearly, but not quite, 100 percent
effective. A four turn BLOOD FEUD is awarded to your TEAM (Any team member can use it
each turn.) when an opposing warrior kills one of yours. Blood feuds transcend
classes. (E.g. a Challenger can BLOOD FEUD an Adept or an Initiate can BLOOD FEUD a
Challenger Champion, etc.) To use a TV or Blood Feud, simply write BF or TV on the
challenge line with the to be challenged warrior number and circle it all for
emphasis.
How does one choose whom to challenge and what to avoid? That's a good question
and like many decisions, the answers are more of an art than a technology. This is the
methodology used by The Consortium managers. It works well for them.
1. Always avoid two different teams
2. Actively seek to challenge twice. (If only one good choice is available, double
challenge.)
3. Challenge for these situations
a. A probable easy opponent
b. A warrior you have beaten before
c. To tie up a warrior you do not want to fight one of your fellow warriors, such
as your Duelmaster
d. To take advantage of a Blood Feud (4 rounds)
e. For a good style match up.
2. Avoid for these situations -- always
a. Emphasis on a team who is bloodfeuding you
b. Emphasis on a team who just beat your warrior
c. Emphasis on a team with warriors in range who are far more experienced or
skilled than you
d. Emphasis on a team you just cannot seem to beat.
e. Emphasis on teams with warriors whose styles are difficult for your style
Often there will be more warriors to challenge or more teams to avoid than the
strategy sheets allow. Choose wisely, but choose for sure. Most of the circumstances
are straightforward, and it is easy to select the challenges and avoids. However, in
many cases, especially those with little knowledge of nearby opponents, it will come
down to what style or type of warrior is best to challenge/avoid.
There are available charts "out there" which prioritize which styles have
advantages over other styles. Beware of them. The data is based on warriors over the
years and those managers who submitted data for those charts. The warning b" today's
lunger is not yesterday's lunger, and my aimed blow is not your aimed blow, and
today's basher is not yesteryear's basher, and a tourney warrior is not necessarily an
arena warrior, etc, etc, etc. The Consortium offers their generic style considerations
for challenges and avoids: (This advice is for DM, but not necessarily for ADM.)
1. Fast offensives challenge AB, slower BA and SL, and known slower ST
2. Aimers challenge scummy/tanky warriors especially TPs
3. Scums challenge LU and softer hitting/smaller offensives
4. Scum hunters (need special strategy ) are good damage/endu LU, hard hitting BA,
critting or hard hitting ST, hard hitting SL with good endu, good PS
5. Consortium-style wastes challenge LU and softer hitting/smaller offensives
6. Lungers challenge AB, PR, PS
7. Rippers, if skilled, challenge ST, faster BA's
The Consortium always avoids and almost always challenges. (Did I make that
clear?)
One final note. The challenging will bring into play and discussion: What is an
appropriate challenge?" The "rules"/"D2 system" allow you to challenge anyone in your
class and the class just above you. Your class is defined, interestingly, as Inits,
Adepts, Champs, and Duelmaster. A "Challenger" Init is an Init for challenge wise
purposes. A "Challenger" Champ is a Champ for challenge wise purposes. Hence the
higher level challenger category can challenge the lower level "non challenger" class.
(Simply put, a Challenger Init can challenge an Init, a challenger Init, and an Adept.
An Adept can challenge Adepts or Challenger Adepts.) This system can allow/cause
challenges from very high experience and recognition point warriors to very low
recognition point and experience warriors. Some regular arenas foster the belief that
challenges may/should ONLY be parallel or up in recognition points. These are usually
Andorian arenas. The rules/system may allow otherwise, but the environment and the
beliefs of sportsmanship of Andorian types differ. This can cause some "discussion
altercations" or even bring the rest of the arena Managers "down" on you.
Challenges and avoids are there to be used to your advantage. Do so.
-- Whitey of Distinct Colors (Consortium affiliated)
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
So far, I'm perfect on the sands. The secret?
Any fight where I attack is a fight I have a chance to win. I already have an
advanced expert in attack and do good damage.
That combination is not too shabby. At 4 fights?!? Fantastic. AB's have lots of
attack (assuming they start with 21 deftness) and naturally learn it faster than any
other skill.
So, here I am with lots of attack, so if I can get a chance to attack, I will continue
to have chances to win.
Speaking of ratings...
An expert rating is the equivalent of 16 skills in that area.
An advanced expert rating is 20 skills.
Master is 26.
Advanced Master is 34 (though very few warriors get this high before they get to
'Advanced Duel 2')
Warriors typically start with 0-16 skills in an area depending on style and stats.
Then you get a random roll that adds or subtracts 4 from the starting value.
If I'm here next turn, I'll talk about Advanced Duel 2. Time to take the dog for a
walk...

SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
NOBLISH ISLAND brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Now let's all watch BASH BROS
QUARANTINE's heads swell from their 4-1-1 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big
talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see ERIC win a fight and
gain 22 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, ERIC beat BENNY STREETER and BENNY STREETER lost
18 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, NOBLISH
ISLAND may be getting bland, as PETS stays top dog in the city. Kickbacks and
bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their
fights? Skill? Ha!
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. NOBLISH ISLAND, I am losing what little hope I had in
you. PRAE DELORE SINCERAM the most avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot
say. And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha
know? It was DISTINCT COLORS. Ha ha ha ha!
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. And now a passing thought on a warrior
dying young (AQUA of DISTINCT COLORS): You had your chance and now you're dead. Oh
well... We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with
you sooner that later?
What does the NOBLISH ISLAND arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Paste
this one in your scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide

In the DM Column I said there is a random roll added to skills. That should have read
a random number from -4 to +4 to skills. Most commonly the number is 0, but there is
approximately a 5% chance for each positive roll (+1, +2, +3, +4) and I believe about
half of that for each negative roll (-1, -2, -3, -4) -- Assur
Hammer -- I run here like I do in every other arenas under the 'Assur' banner: 5 Kill
Desire and attack limbs. I have no desire to kill other people's warriors.
Though I'm happy to have warriors that are thugs in all other ways. -- Assur
Wealth of knowledge!?! -- How about this:
Please challenge my warriors with:
6 Large Shields (Main hand, 2 backups, Off hand, 2 backups)
Plate Armor
Full Helm
Strategy: 10 offensive effort in all minutes
10 activity level in all minutes
Lunge tactic in all minutes
Dodge tactic in all minutes
It is a very entertaining strategy. Not good for winning, but good for a laugh.
Especially for warriors that have low strength or low carry ability. -- Assur
New Players -- It looks like the gang is all here! My 5 Card Draw stable finally

What? Really? Bash Bros Quarantine is avoiding Distinct Colors? Again? Avoiding us
