                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

                               All About D2 Tournaments
A Face-To-Face Is Imminent (July 16, 2019) in Cincinnati, OH
                                         Plus
An Actual Scenario For A Former Noblish Isle Warrior

The purpose of this spotlight is to give newcomers to D2 a sense or feeling or
information about tournaments, in this case a recent past Face-To-Face tournament,
held in Tempe near the RSI offices. Hence, Billiken of College Mascots from Noblish
Isle was selected as the guinea-pig. Rah, rah, Billiken!

So, a tournament. Four times a year RSI holds tournaments. (Well, Covid did set
them back a year, but all is now back on track.) Winter and Summer are Face-To-Face
Tournaments where managers from all arenas compete on-site against each other face-to-
face and can change strategies each and every fight if they wish. The winter Face Site
has always been in Tempe, AZ, (The RSI Home Site) while the summer event in held in
varying cities east of the Mississippi. (Past ones were in New Orleans, LA, and
Kansas City, MO, the Washington, DC area, Tampa, FL, etc.) The Mail-In Tournaments are
done completely via mail and managers submit predetermined strategies for their
entered warriors. (Each warrior is allowed a primary strategy and also a secondary
strategy which will be employed against selected styles.) Both events cost $7.00 per
warrior and are great fun. Warriors compete in classes, thereby allowing similarly
experienced warriors from all arenas to be fairly matched with each other. In
tournaments, a warrior's chance to learn skills or earn stat increases is half that in
normal arenas. Supposedly, the chances of dying are also halved.

Why might I want to do this? I had four real reasons. (1) Tournaments are fun; a
real rush, as the warrior and manager gets lots of fights in a very short period. b"
minimum three fights (2) Seeing one's warrior compete against warriors from many other
arenas is fulfilling and a good judge of the skill and status of one's own warrior and
one's own management style. (3) Meeting and intermingling with other managers and the
RSI staff is a great experience. Many have become good friends. Often, face-too-face,
is a fine way to learn from other managers. (4) The warrior acquires fights plus
skills and/or stat raises that are "hidden", meaning that those fights and resultant
learnings cannot be seen in the arena status listing of the warrior. For example,
Billiken was 3-0-1 on the Noblish Island newsletter prior to the tournament, and
despite fighting several fights in the tournament, will be listed at 3-0-1 after the
tournament.

I entered Billiken from Noblish Island in The 2017 Winter FTF. Prior to fighting
him in The FTF, I wanted to give him the best possibility to succeed. I prepared to
fight him in the Apprentices class. Classes are segregated by FE b" Fight Equivalents.
What is a fight equivalent? Each arena fight counts as one fight and any tournament
fights count as a half fight. The Apprentices Class is for warriors with 1-4 FE.
Having no tournament fights prior, I wanted to try to "max" Billiken for Apprentices.
By "max" I wanted him to fight with the maximum FE possible in that class. By doing
so, I would optimize his chances to have as many skills as possible and to succeed.
Alas, I was unable to do so, only getting Billiken three fights prior to the Face;
hence, he was one fight "light", but that wasn't too bad.

Pre-Tournament, Billiken looked like this: 11-13-5-15-21-8-11, a Lunger who was
right-handed, intelligent, incredibly quick and elusive, did normal damage, had good
endurance, and had an expert in attack on the roll. He earned expert defense after one
learn in the arena, so I also knew he was +2 to 4 attack skills and +4 defense. Nice,
but not quite a godling. Billiken did o.k. in the tournament, finishing 3-3 (1 a
grudge match) against the best Apprentices in the land, even though he was only 75%
maxed. He also learned/trained well, earning 1 stat (CN, moving endurance to great)
and 7 skills. (mostly initiative) Perhaps a general fight-by-fight summary would prove
of value? First, let me list for you the one strategy I chose:

           8 - 9 - 9 - 7 - 7 - 4 - 4 ASM/S
          10 - 9 - 6 - 3 - 3 - 1 - 10 0-13 : SS
           6 - 6 - 6 - 7 - 7 - 10 - 4 14+ : LO
           N - L - N - N - N - L - N b/u : DA
           D - N - N - N - N - N - D

Strategies, armor, weapons, backups, tactics, training, etc, etc are all
variable, and explaining MY choices or normal Consortium choices would require a much,
much longer spotlight. Perhaps another day. As to Billikens's tournament action:

Fight one against a sz13 scum TP b" Billiken swung 26 times with the LO, 1 crit,
but with his only normal damage could not take the scum down and lost in six rounds,
earning an init and attack skill.

Fight two, a sz8 aimer (ale/l sc/-) with a lot of dodging and back and forthing,
the aimer was a winner; Billiken was 0/10/0 with the SS earning a riposte and init
skill.

Fight three, which Billiken has to win or he is out! (3 losses and done) another
aimer, also sz8, who was ale/l and using fist. The fight was nearly identical to the
previous fight except Billiken won, going 0/9/0 with the SS and earning one init
skill.

Fight four, a striker at sz11, naked, and with a scimitar. Billiken dodged his
advances in the first round, traded strokes with him in the second, finally getting
his best crit of the tourney, knocking him down, and finishing the win in three
rounds. He was 1/10/0 with the SS. (one init skill)

Fight five, another scum, sz8, and Billiken did not know he was fighting a scum.
(APM/F SH/ME) Had he known, in the FTF, he could and would have changed his strategy
to slow down and hopefully take out the scum. But instead, although Billiken
performed well with the LO, going 4/20/0, he lost in 4 rounds. He finished at 2-3,
earning another init. BUTb&b&..

A final special grudge match is allowed at FTFs, so Billiken brokered a match up
with a basher. A sz 11, naked, HL wielding basher. Scary For the grudge, but Billiken
wanted to test a strategy. Since he was pretty defensive skilled and not so much of a
damaging hitter, 6-6-2 dodge, with ale/l sh/- (low armor, and LO high armor). He
learned the basher was going 10-10-7 decise in the first round. Amazingly, Billiken
dodged the first two swings of the massive halberd, then jabbed him twice for the win
and a decent 3-3 record. He was training for a CON stat and got it, not only adding to
hit points, but giving him great endurance.

Billiken says he was glad to get out of the FTF alive! Such is Billiken's Face-
To-Face tournament saga. He was an OK 3-3. He earned 7 skills, and a stat increase
which enhanced his hit points and endurance. It was a great experience.

                               ANOTHER LOOK AT BASHERS

My plan was to write about Queen Of Clubs and her transition to a more well-suited
weapon, while running with lighter armor, but apparently RSI did not receive my
updated strategy sheet before the due date; however, she did manage to win her fight
last cycle.

Granted, she had a favorable random matchup against Quiet Bog of Meal Team 6, who only
had one FE, but again my Basher was wearing plate armor with a full helm, while
brandishing a great axe that she lacks the wit to make use of her weapons features.

Queen only connected twice, once on the right hand and the second time on the side of
the head, but it was sufficient enough damage to inflict serious wounds on her
opponent, thus granting her the victory.

She entered the fight with a 2-3-0, 11 record and is now sporting a modest 3-3-0, 24
record.

I did not send a new strategy for T-581, so hopefully the previous strategy that I
sent in for T-580 somehow found its way to RSI and was input for T-581.

Meanwhile, I have been thinking about how Bashers were my favorite fighting style when
I first began my managerial career on Noblish Island those many long and somewhat
forgotten years ago.

I actually have five graduated Bashers from years ago, when I actually enjoyed running
Bashers, before recently getting burnt out running Bashers during my return to the
sands of Alastari this past year.

For one or another forgotten reason they just did not seem to be fun to run anymore.

I either had lost my touch with the style, or during my long absence from the game
warriors and managers had become even better than I had remembered, or simply a
combination of all three.

Nonetheless, it seems as though I find myself rolling up Bashers once again, depending
upon the team sheet or the replacement sheet. Recently, I sent two new Bashers to the
Dark Arena in DM 83 for their first fight, figuring that if they lived, they would be
worth running. Both died and in hind sight one of them may have proven to be fun to
run in the No Tourney Arena, but that is now water under the bridge and I have moved
on to running other warriors, but will probably roll up another Basher here in Noblish
Island on my next team, after 5 Card Draw serves their ten-turn tenure in DM 93.

Mahatsawd from my original Milchamah stable in Noblish Island flirted above and below
.500 his entire career, after transferring to Niytyole Island in DM 33, after serving
his ten turns in DM 93.

Mahatsawd currently sits inactive in DM 101 with a record of 21-24-1. 88, 57 FE. ST =
21 CN = 17 SZ = 11 WT = 13 (1) WL = 7 SP = 5 DF =11 and he is right-handed, bright,
clumsy, can take tremendous amounts of damage, can carry a tremendous weight, does
great damage, has an expert in initiative, has a master in attack, has an expert in
parry, has an expert in decisiveness, favors the mace, favors a high offensive effort,
favors a very low activity level and preferentially learns attack.

Without going into greater detail, my other four graduated Bashers in no particular
order have the following statistics and favorites:

[20-15-2, 77, 44 FE] ST = 15 CN = 5 SZ =15 WT = 13 (1) WL = 13 (1) SP = 15 DF = 11
(1). He does great damage, favors the maul, favors a very high offensive effort,
favors a low activity level, uses the decisive tactic well and preferentially learns
defense.

[15-11-0, 53, 32 FE] ST = 13 (1) CN = 5 SZ = 15 WT = 15 (1) WL = 17 (1) SP = 9 DF =
13. He does great damage, favors the war hammer, favors a high offensive effort,
favors a very low activity level and preferentially learns attack.

[22-18-2, 82, 53 FE] ST = 11 CN = 13 (1) SZ = 16 WT = 15 WL = 17 (2) SP = 4 DF = 11.
He does good damage, favors the maul, favors a moderate offensive effort, favors a
very low activity level, uses the bash tactic well and preferentially learns
decisiveness.

[14-15-2, 59, 36 FE] ST = 21 CN = 11 SZ = 13 WT = 11 WL = 7 SP = 11 (1) DF = 11. He
does tremendous damage, favors the morning star, favors a high offensive effort,
favors a low activity level and preferentially learns parry.

At the time, all of these Bashers were entertaining and fun to run.

Hopefully, you new players will discover how entertaining and fun running one or more
Bashers to graduation can be, during your early years as a Duel 2 manager.

                                  BB CBA NEGOTIATION

Most experts are expecting a work stoppage in baseball. At the end of the
current season, the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the MLB and the
MLBPA expires. The current CBA has served us well for many years, but that time is
over. Things have been brewing for a very messy CBA negotiation cycle. I hope they
'figure it out,' but I also expect a work stoppage. As a true fan, I will enjoy
baseball while it lasts, condemn both sides for fighting over an obscene amount of
money, and then enjoy baseball when it comes back.

Fortunately, I like Duel 2 more than I like baseball (well, at least as much as
baseball). So what does my new team look like? How did I design them? For naming, I
took some of the worst aspects of the CBA and named my warriors GREED, BAD FAITH,
STRIKE, MEDIATION, and LOCKOUT. If one of those dies, I can add UGLY.

Greed came to me as 10-9-12-14-7-10-8. 17 wit and 11 deftness seem like obvious
choices. The speed and size are a little higher than I'd like for a low will hybrid,
so I'm going to go with an offensive warrior. The low will suggests I go with the
best pure offensive style, the striker. They handle lower will better since they
conserve endurance well. The rest of the points get added to strength and will to
give me 15-9-12-17-10-10-11 ST.

Bad Faith came to me as 4-7-13-11-10-14-11. Another low will, medium size
warrior, this one with more speed, deftness and less con and dreadfully low strength.
I'm either looking at a speed Aimed Blow (which can deal with the low strength) or
another striker. I'm currently a bit down on the low strength Aimed Blows, so striker
it is. 17 wit again and 9 strength for weapon selection uses 11 points. I add two to
speed (could have been deftness) and the extra point on will and end up with 9-7-13-
17-11-16-11 ST.

Strike came to me as 10-16-4-10-17-9-4. Now here we go. 21 will and high con
and enough strength. We're talking about a defensive or defensive minded hybrid. The
Deftness cannot get to 11 or I'd be doing jumping jacks for a near perfect scum
warrior. But wait, I can 'burn' him to become perfect. Burning is similar to busting,
except you do it early in a warrior's career, not later. And my motto is if you're
going to burn, burn a LOT. But you also only really want to do 1-2 trains on each
stat. I end with 14-18-4-10-20-9-9 TP and will 'burn' him early to be 15(1)-20(2)-4-
11(1)-21(1)-9-11(2).

Mediation came to me as 9-7-14-7-13-7-13. For a new player, I'd suggest 11-9-14-
13-17-7-13 LU or 11-11-14-11-17-7-13 WS/TP. If the new player wanted and aimed blow,
I could even suggest 9-9-14-11-17-7-17 AB, but I would also tell them my expectations
on this AB are not nearly as high as the other two designs. I decided to try the
design that I suggest for the AB as a LU. So my warrior is 9-9-14-11-17-7-17 LU. I
sacrifice weapon selection on this warrior for a few extra skills. It is quite
possibly the wrong choice, but it is my choice to make.

Lockout came to me as 6-10-11-12-9-9-13. This warrior is similar to warrior 2,
but less speed and size. Because of that, I choose AB this time instead of ST. I
also am a big fan of the EP with AB's. So after adding 5 to wit and 4 to deftness and
1 to strength, I have 7-10-11-17-9-9-17 with 4 points to add. Most managers would go 2
each to str and con. Some managers might add 2 of those to deftness (there is an
attack skill there that AB's only get at creation). Because the damage prospects
(Normal, Good, or Great damage) don't change from 7 to 9 strength, I'm ok going with 7
strength. I can use the EP, FI, and DA well suited and the SC lacking strength. So I
choose to add all 4 points to con and get a bunch of hit points. Final design is 7-
14-11-17-9-9-17 AB.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

So what is it that makes me 'special' in the eyes of Assur? Certainly it is the fact
that I have two 21's and that those 21's are in desirable areas.

As you may recall, my original 70 point setup was 7-7-8-9-15-9-15. Assur designed me
7-7-8-11-21-9-21 AB. It is a speculative design, for sure. Today's column will be
talking about how exactly Assur will 'bust' me. It is estimated that I started with
58 skills.

Aimed Blows can have maybe 135 skills and still be Freshmen warriors. Around 175
skills and still be ADM warriors. And 200 skills and still be Eligible warriors.
There are other factors that make those numbers lower or higher, but those are rough
approximations. So if I were to learn 77 skills and do maybe 10 trains, I'd be at
about the maximum skills and trains I can learn and still be classed as a Freshmen.
(Different numbers to reach the top of ADM and Eligible). Note that any skills you
gain from training stats also count for your total skills. But I could train to
12(5)-12(5)-8-11-21-9-21 after learning 77 (those trains don't get me any skills).
I'm not saying this is what Assur will do; he will make that decision when after I
learn skill #77 (He wants to see which skills I learn). But for the sake of argument
say he likes what I look like at those numbers and 77 skills. I'm at 135 skills and
10 trains and 'ready'.

3 turns before a tournament begins, there is a 'freeze'. It is called a freeze
because it freezes the tournament class of a graduated warrior. So I'd be 'frozen,'
for that tournament, as a Freshmen classed warrior. For the three turns before the
tournament, I might train WL to 24. This would get me 12 more skills. During the
tournament, I'd try to train WL & DF to 25. If I last long enough in the tournament
(i.e. don't get 3 losses) and get all those trains, I'll have 24 more skills. So now
I'm still running in the tournament and have 171 skills. Instead of looking like a top
Freshman warrior, I look more like a top ADM warrior, but I'm fighting in the Freshman
class. In theory, I'm better than any warrior in the Freshman tournament that isn't
also busting. That is a lot of skills and is a very common strategy.

And that was the plan when I was created. That is still the plan and it is exciting
because the next step in the plan is to graduate from the basic arena. Because I sat
on the throne for so many turns and won so many fights, it makes the path to
graduation shorter. It is quite possible I'll graduate at 20 fights. The most common
requirements to graduate are: 14 wins, 20 fights in the arena, 17 political points, an
advanced expert rating (or more), and an expert rating (or more).

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly NOBLISH ISLAND games. Former top team BASH BROS
QUARANTINE was unseated this week as DISTINCT COLORS moved up from 2nd ranking to
take the top spot with a 5-0-0 record for the round. LAVENDER caught the eye of many
in the gladiatorial commission as it skillfully bested ONE EYED JACK and was awarded
18 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, LAVENDER put down
ONE EYED JACK, causing him to lose 14 points of recognition in the process. Although
KHALHUMS DWARF made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of
victorious PETS. Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he never
fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
Many and various are the arts of battle. In NOBLISH ISLAND "art" is a word that
has long since passed from the language! I saw one fighter that warriors avoided
when this week's challenge seeking began. 5 CARD DRAW is feared. This much I can
say. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better
part of last week avoiding 5 CARD DRAW. Indeed it was DISTINCT COLORS. Mighty
fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. JACK OF DIAMONDS take
warning! You have more than a few enemies in NOBLISH ISLAND.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. FOUR has sworn to take up religion upon
living to tell of his recent bout with the Dark Arena horrors. A rare thing indeed!
Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the
brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in NOBLISH ISLAND. Nice atmosphere you have here! Sadly warriors, now
longer can I keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and
soon! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The

Are there new team or teams coming? Out with the Quarantines. (They got both shots and
ended up with 10 turns.) Will Distinct Colors go? We only had nine turns, but somehow
missed a round. (The Commission probably missed one of our 5-0 turns?) If we go, see
ya! If we get another round -- watch out! -- Whitey, Mgr. Distinct Colors

Deliveries, you snarked me! and you were late, too. I don't like you. -- Yellow,
Distinct Color

Ian MacDonald, heed last rounds "warning" about acquiring and using the C.I.C. so as
not to unnecessarily burden yourself with inadequate weapons. (But, that was a nice
train; hope it helps.) Meanwhile, I enjoyed the tussle and appreciated the win. --
Pink, Distinct Color

Queen Of Hearts, I enjoyed your tarts! -- Lavender, Distinct Color

Family, you hurt me more than I hurt you. It was unfair of you to use the whole
family! -- Burdandy, Distinct Color

Assur, I give you credit for a fine, fine round of ten. -- Whitey, Distinct Colors

We all let you down. (Me, Assur and Hammer) Bad us! Not a single spotlight last round.
Mea culpa.) -- Whitey, Distinct Colors
P.S. Perhaps we can excuse Assur, since he did have two plus a DM spotlight-like
column last round. But, then, since it is Assur, there will be no excuses.

Colors, colors everywhere, and not a paint can in sight. Whitey, Distinct Colors

For the Cincy FtF, Mannequin/Crip are organizing a visit to the Great American Ball
Park on the Friday night (16 Jul, 7:10 start time) to watch the Reds/Brewers game. If
interested, please contact Crip through gwerner - @ - twcny dot rr dot com. Because
of Covid, tickets are being sold in specific pods, so if 8 people want to go, we may
have to sit in two different groups. Please respond by 1 May if interested so we can
pre-purchase the tickets. -- Crip & Mannequin

Jorja -- So sorry about your hospital visit. Hope all is well now -- Assur

To the next Consortium rep: get your avoids ready! I'm coming for you -- Assur

All -- I sent an article to HAL the night of the due date and I am waiting for a
confirmation while I write some P-ads for the T-581 newsletter! -- Hammer

Nice Boi -- I was either extremely lucky or my experience level was too much for your
inexperience! -- Jack Of Diamonds

Friends -- It would be ironic if my backup weapon is actually my favorite weapon! --
One Eyed Jack

Lavender -- Obviously you were the better warrior! -- Queen Of Hearts

Indoors -- Obviously I should have remained indoors! At least I survived the
Infirmary! -- Wild Card Joker

Quiet Bog -- My experience and your inexperience made the difference! -- Queen Of
Clubs

New Players -- Welcome to the arena! Pay close attention to the articles that
Consortium aka Whitey, Assur and Jorja write in the DM 93 newsletter! -- Hammer, Duel
2 Sponsor, mgr of 5 Card Draw

All -- Still no confirmation from HAL regarding the team spotlight that I wrote!
Perhaps that is why there were no articles from either Consortium or Assur in the T-
580 newsletter! -- Hammer

Hal seems to have taken a (much-deserved?) evening off after processing the
mail-in tournament. I see the spotlights now. -- Ed

Whitey -- I think Assur buys drinks for the spy reporters. -- Jorja
P.S. I'm starting a new team here, threw it together off the cuff, but it'll do. I'm
thinking of writing a rant against aimed blows, having just had the dubious pleasure
of reading clear through the tourney spy report with the style notes.
