TEAM SPOTLIGHT
COLD CRUEL CONTEST CONCEPTS
I returned to the game over a year ago just in time to activate a stable that had been
languishing in Arena 45 since the last time a contest had been hosted there by Master
Darque. That stable was created from one of I think three team sheets that I had
ordered specifically to participate in the contest.
My team did not do all that well and sported a sub .500 record. Surprisingly, my
reactivated team finished among the top ten finishers in the contest that Master
Darque hosted last year, but as of this writing my stable has a 39.2 percent won/loss
record in the arena.
I did manage to fight all 5 warriors in all 10 rounds of the most recent contest,
which resulted in being awarded a +2 bonus-potion to any of my warriors that ran in
the contest.
This is one of the features of most contests that have run either recently or
currently in a handful of basic arenas, both slow and regular, that encourages
contestants to continue running full stables for the remainder of the contest, no
matter how poorly their stables fare on the contest arena sands.
Consortium recently wrote an article in the Noblish Island newsletter regarding
tournaments.
Most managers who enter contests will also run their stables in tournaments to develop
skills in hopes of gaining an edge on their competitors in the basic arena contest, or
to at least close the gap that more superior teams have among the contest entrants.
A friend of mine recently competed in a contest in Arena 32 and prior to the contest
he sent his stable to the tournament that preceded the start of the contest. His two
best warriors were killed in the tourney and another friend who entered the contest
also had one of his best warriors die in the tourney, before the contest began.
Another cold cruel reality of entering a contest is that several managers, quite
possibly a majority of the managers entered in the contest, have invested quite a
sizeable amount of money in buying new team sheets, for the sole purpose of creating
competitive tourney warriors and contest teams.
Some may spend a modest 25 or 50 dollars for 5 or 10 new team sheets in search of a
competitive squad; while others may spend 100 dollars for 20 team sheets or even 500
dollars for 100 team sheets, in their quest of sending dozens of warriors to compete
in the rookies-tourney and hopefully also have a suitable stable to enter in a future
contest that strikes their fancy.
It is not my purpose to dissuade anyone from entering contests, because for the most
part participating in a contest is a lot of fun, no matter how well or poorly your
stable fares on the contest arena sands.
I am just admonishing new and returning players, that there are veteran managers out
there who have invested a lot of time and money in their quest for winning prizes of
any type, that are offered in tournaments and in arena contests.
As I mentioned earlier, contests are fun and entertaining, depending upon your mind-
set and how you handle both winning or losing emotionally.
I am currently hosting a contest in Arena 5 that has completed 8 of the 25 rounds. My
contest has several categories and the 25 rounds covers them all as a marathon, rather
than a sprint.
Most basic arena contests are usually 10 or maybe even 12 rounds in length.
These shorter contests serve as an incentive to recruit as large a number of
contestants as possible, without their losing interest in participating in the
contest, while my contest in Arena 5 actually caused a few managers to abstain from
entering due to the nearly year-long duration of the contest.
I was gifted a couple of team sheets as a Christmas present from another manager, so I
missed out on entering my stable in either of the two tourneys preceding the contest.
I did not receive the team sheets until after the October tournament and the US Postal
Service messed up the delivery of my priority mailer that contained my rookie-tourney
sheets for my contest team, by delivering the priority mailer after the January
tournament had already run.
I am enjoying hosting the Kaltos Kaos in Arena 5 even though I have suffered the loss
of 3 of my original warriors during the early stages of the contest, as my stable
limps along with a somewhat improved 40 per cent won/loss record after 8 of 25 rounds
of competition.
I did enter 4 of my warriors in the April mailer tourney and they managed to survive
the experience, even though they were not timed for their particular tourney classes
[refer back to the Consortium article on Tournaments if you have a copy of that
newsletter].
Contests attract competitors and are likened unto an ongoing tournament [with a
variety of categories, depending upon the contest] in the basic arena over the course
of the contest.
Currently there are contests running in Arena 5 and in Arena 47, but somewhere down
the road there will probably be another contest brewing, because contests add to the
enjoyment of competing against your managerial peers in the basic arenas.
Perhaps we will cross blades in a future basic arena contest, so start saving your
hard-earned shekels to purchase some new team sheets, while you continue learning how
to improve your managerial skills.

Addendum to Assur's Guide on Tank Hybrids
Since Assur originally wrote his Tank Hybrid guide, he has seen success with several
low will tank hybrids. While it is more of a cross between a tank and a riposting
hybrid, they deserve a bit of attention.
Assur has only seen success with a few styles and while the stats aren't locked in,
they do have 'requirements'.
* Strength should normally be 15+. You are wearing APM or APA. You need lots
and lots of encumbrance.
* Constitution is more flexible, but the more the better. 13+ is probably a good
guideline.
* Assur has only succeeded with size 4-6, so we'll say 7 or less.
* Wit needs to be 11-21. 11 is a huge breakpoint for skills, in particular
initiative skills, which for this hybrid are needed.
* Will is ONLY needed for 'enough' endurance. Several of Assur's designs simply
concede fights against scum warriors.
* Speed and Deftness need to be taken together. Obviously for AB's, deftness
wants to be 17-21. Together, you want enough speed, deftness and wit to start
with at 5+ riposte skills base. 5 is on the low side, but less and your
warrior won't riposte at all, which will ensure losses. Several of Assur's
tanks have chosen 13 speed and 11 deftness.
Style:
Note that we are definitely blurring the definition of a tank vs riposting hybrid,
because these low will designs are not simply tanking until their opponent gets tired.
They are tanking until they have the opportunity to attack back.
Assur has succeeded with AB and WS. Others have succeeded with PR. I am certain that
LU would work. PL's work similar enough to WS's that they 'should' work, but I
haven't tried it.
AB and PR are probably the perfect styles. They both learn riposte (which is
essential) and conserve endurance (which this design is short on).
I've had almost nothing but bad luck with low will TP's, so I won't be trying that one
any time soon.
PS's have such bad starting skills and their natural learning is so bad it is very
tough to do anything but discourage new players from using this lesser style. But
they can handle the low endurance. Can they overcome their other deficiencies to make
this type of design work?!? I have no clue. It might be an interesting experiment,
but it might be one that fails miserably.
Examples (actual examples that Assur has used):
Wall of Steels
Perhaps my favorite warrior for this model is a warrior that comes as 16-9-6-10-6-13-
10. This is not considered a high value setup. But I will forever make this into:
21-15-6-11-7-13-11. I made it into a WS the one time I have seen it. He was nothing
short of fantastic in Rookies, going 7-3. He retired after that. I love this guy
because he is perfect for what I'm trying to accomplish and uses a setup that nobody
cares about. I also love that it wins with 11 starting wit and 7 starting will. NOTE
TO ALL READERS: low wit and low will is considered a serious deficit!!! There is a
reason I retired my favorite version of this right after his rookies run.
Other designs and examples I've used to varying degrees of success include: 17-16-5-
11-8-16-11 WS, 21-13-5-11-10-13-11 WS, 17-10-8-15-10-7-17 WS 17-14-4-17-9-8-15 WS
(note that this guy is one of the best PR setups in the game -- you can make it 17-14-
4-17-7-8-15 PR), 17-13-4-17-9-13-11 WS
Aimed Blows:
17-15-6-17-8-4-17 AB This one deserves special mention. The manager who goes by the
name "Manager" deserves credit for this type of warrior. He created several warriors
and named them such things as Perfect Snotling, Superior Snotling, etc. This warrior
is modeled after these Snotlings and is a prime example of this hybrid Tank-Riposting
hybrid warrior. I can wholeheartedly recommend this model.
15-16-8-11-7-10-17 AB, 15-15-7-11-7-8-21 AB
Parry Ripostes:
The two I've tried are lower con versions. I do not recommend these and the second is
a complete failure. I was hoping that because PR's riposte better, they could swing
back sooner rather than later. I cannot recommend either of these two (though the
first was ok) 21-11-7-11-7-12-15 PR, 21-9-14-17-8-4-11 PR (complete failure, tried
going outside my own recommendations and the result was not good. But you only learn
from trying, so I don't regret trying)
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Lavender here. The Duelmaster in my last turn on Noblish Isle.
For those of you interested in further battles with Distinct Colors, we are
relocating to Kati-Tei, Arena 41, to close out our careers.
Whitey has been a great Manager for us Distinct Colors, and as approved by The
Consortium, he thought he would talk to you about skill learning a little, in this
column. So, listen up!
Skill learning rate, what is it? The Consortium calculates it as "number of
skills learned divided by number of attempts to learn skills". Pretty simple. So, any
rounds that one trains stats would be excluded from the calculation. Some examples of
Distinct Color Learning are:
Lavender a 15 wit had 13 skills in 8 tries = 1.63
Orange, a 21 wit had 22 in 8 tries = 2.75
Yellow, an 8 wit, did not train skills in his 10 rounds on Noblish. He was
treated as a "burner" and trained only stats. (7 stat increases)
Burgandy a 17 wit had 12 in 8 tries for 1.50
Pink, a 21 wit had 8 in 4 tries for 2.00 (Note: he also learned 8 skills in 5
tournament fights which are not considered in The Consortium calculation;
this was much better than the 2.00 rate.)
So, obviously, the higher the wit, the higher the skill learn rate is expected to
be. But skill learning is also impacted by other features, namely: the opponent's
number of skills, the length of the fight, and luck to name a few.
So, if you want to learn the most skills, have a very high wit, fight opponents
with lots of skills, stretch out your winning fight, and be lucky. (Note: the closer
you get to learning all your 120ish skills, the skill learn rate will slow down. But
that is a story for another day.)
Brought to you by: Lavender, Duelmaster; Whitey Manager of Distinct Colors; and The
Consortium
SPY REPORT
It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! DISTINCT COLORS? Who? THIRD HIGHWAY 3 is the top team these days,
buddies! Nothing works for a team like victory (How's that for a perceptive
observation?) as THIRD HIGHWAY 3 can attest... The boys at PHOENIX FORCE are walking
tall, as they are ranked 5th on their first try! Going for the Duelmaster soon?
Practice pays for BAD FAITH, who pummelled JACK OF DIAMONDS, to pocket 17 points.
What can be a greater victory? ONE EYED JACK has taken his place as the top, as
NOBLISH ISLAND's new Duelmaster. Word has it one team in NOBLISH ISLAND is taking
speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Perhaps the warriors of MEAL TEAM 6 should take
up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... As a woman of good breeding
scorns the "warriors" of BB CBA NEGOT., so did that sorry team shy from MEAL TEAM 6
Willing to win at any cost is BLINKY ME EYEPOKE, who challenged DON CRESCENT, 14
points junior. Our sympathies, DON CRESCENT! I thought BLINKY ME EYEPOKE showed
great skill and promise when he was defeated by DON CRESCENT. All right, so I slept
through it! Big deal!
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Justice was
served as DON CRESCENT fought BLINKY ME EYEPOKE in bloodfeud. Well done, THIRD
HIGHWAY 3! Questions are being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in
the arena. A certain tavern in NOBLISH ISLAND would I avoid!
Leave me now, you base fools! My fingers tire and I fear my incessant prattling
may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. NOBLISH ISLAND, I leave you
now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Swinging Aardvark. 'Til next
time-- Novgorodny Vir

MEDIATION has failed! Things are going UGLY. They might end up in COURT. Ugly came
to me as 10-11-9-12-15-9-4. Can't get to 11 deftness, so the focus is on styles that
can deal with lower deftness. LU/BA/SL are known to be able to succeed with lower
deftness. ST's, TP's, & WS's much prefer 11 deftness, but both can succeed with
lower. I do not recommend PS/PL/PR with less than 11 deftness (though it my goal to
run a great 7 deftness PR, but haven't found the right warrior yet). AB's should be
17-21 (and it is an advanced topic to go lower and not one that Assur ever does). My
design? 10-11-9-17-21-9-7 LU -- Assur
Amber Clad -- Get a weapon with more blade. Jorja is not one for second-thoughting
other managers, but an unsuitable weapon really stirs her up, and we all catch the
edge of her irritation. She does irritated very well. She quarreled once with a
cousin of hers who was all excited about starting a duelmaster's team and told her
about it on the phone. And she told him what was wrong with his designs. He didn't
believe her, of course; and his plans to play fell through. She said at the time it
was no wonder he didn't go on. That his warriors were designed for over-a-table role
playing with an indulgent moderator. Low wit and will, because a player can provide
that himself in talking out the turn. But the Commission's computer is merciless. If
the roll-up doesn't have the right numbers, you're stuck. And real-world logic
doesn't enter into it, either. A basher is not well-suited to use his fists. "Uses
this weapon in an unorthodox fashion" generally means the weapon is unsuited to the
style. And don't ignore obvious points, I had a player diplo me once complaining that
in three turns his warriors hadn't learned a single skill. According to his diplo,
they'd gained TWELVE stat raises in that time. He wasn't TRAINING skills. He didn't
keep playing either. The game can be fun, but you have to work with it. Computers
aren't flexible in this kind of thing. -- Faren End
Queen of Clubs -- I think I hate you. I don't like women taller than me who take the
phrase "hit on him" literally. -- Chuck Byway
Stoppa Squeal -- Yes, you won, but armor is your friend. Get some. -- Don Crescent
Bad Faith -- Ouch. I'm not negotiating with you. Please! -- Edgar Detour
Greed -- It will skunk you in the end. -- Casey Boone
I don't know why only three warriors ran, but that's just as well. I'm not sure I
have time to do more personals and get 'em in under the wire. -- Jorja
P.S. If I'm going to write a rant against aimed blows, I'd better start it now and
not wait till the last minute.
In the Tournament I saw statements such as:
"The bantam warrior is being forced back under the weight of his opponent's
blows!"
"...Driven back toward the arena wall by the energy of his foe's attack."
"The Swamp Dweller fighter is forced to retreat a few paces under the strength of
the attack."
Are these kinds of statements any indication of the character "finding his rhythm" or
using its favorite weapon? Or nothing at all? Thank you. -- Shawn, mgr Phoenix Force
Sorry there Mediation, I guess I disagreed with the terms of our original agreement.
-- Blinky MC
Apologies, Ghost of Barb. With a KD of 5, I figured you would exit gracefully instead
of a blood-spraying spectacle of agony. I'll tell my trainer to bust out the ouija
board for you. -- Blinky MC
A "thank you" for all the old pros for helping noobs like me with advice and
commentary. -- Mephisto 4K, Meal Team 6
Chuck B. -- Agreed. Too much tofu in the fajitas right now. -- Taco Smell
