Question of the Week #2
For those of you who came in after I started posting this series of questions and
answers, they are being taken from the newsletter for Aruak City, DM 11. The
questions were being posed by Hanibal, a relatively new player and Noblish alumnus,
and the answers were offered by any members of that arena who cared to respond.
Question, turn 400:
All -- I think I have a basic grasp on most aspects of this game, but one thing I have
no clue about is how to maximize skill learning. I had an 18 wit TP challenge up to a
warrior who had 21 more fights than me and I only learned 2 skills. The next fight I
was matched up against a less experienced warrior And I learned 5 skills. This is not
an isolated incident. Any tips on skill learning? -- Hanibal's Q.O.W.
Answers, turn 401:
ADIE'S ANSWER -- Theoretically I think, learning has so many variables affecting it,
that sometimes the number of learns appears random. Some suggested variables include
fight experience differences between combatants, total skill differences, intelligence
level of one or both combatants, what each's favorite learn may be, what styles the
two warriors are.... There are so many, it's difficult to say. Sometimes you can see
the effect of one variable more than another. Other times, one has absolutely no
clue. -- Adie
Hanibal -- In your example of warrior learns, did you lose the fight against the more
experienced opponent, but win the fight against the less experienced opponent? The
outcome of a fight may affect learning, with the winner being bonused and the loser
being penalized. I believe that the best way to make a warrior learn well is to give
them a 21 wit. That's why wit is my favorite stat to have a 21 in! (Not to mention
all the base skills it gives.) -- Generalissimo Puerco
Hannibal -- Skill learning is mainly a derivative of the warrior's wit--obviously the
higher the better. But luck (die roll) plays a big part, as do what the other warrior
can teach, how many skills yet to learn and a few lesser factors. -- Kennelworth
Hanibal, re the question of the week -- The main thing is to TRAIN skills. Okay,
everybody stop laughing. You people (Hanibal, too) already realize this, but there
may be a new manager reading this reply who doesn't. Seriously, I once had a manager
whose team had just chartered (i.e., he'd been playing for ten turns) diplo me and ask
why one of his warriors hadn't learned any skills. He sent me the warrior's numbers,
and a little simple math revealed that this warrior had eight stat increases in those
ten fights! He hadn't been TRAINING skills. Lesson there, never overlook the
obvious.
As to a more useful answer, I don't have one, but I do have some secondary
questions.
For instance, I was once told that a warrior learns better with an odd-numbered
WT. Since I have never personally run a warrior with an even-number WT that I can
recall, I don't know. It sounds unlikely, but then, who knows how a computer thinks?
Challenging up increases the ODDS of learning but is not guarantee. Does anybody have
any information as to whether a lower-ranked warrior who teaches well is one with lots
of skills? My own information would tend to contradict that, as I have some excellent
teachers in other arenas who have yet to receive their first rating. I have heard that
there is an increased chance of learning when the fight is a long one. Anybody know
whether this is true or just wishful thinking on the part of those matched against
scum?
Is the caliber of a warrior's teaching on a given fight reflected in his point
gain in the rankings? I have been given to understand that points gained in excess of
the basic minimum reflect how well above the average the warrior performed. In
theory, a good performance means better demonstration and thus better teaching, but
does it work out that way?
Do warriors of a given style tend to teach a specific skill or group of skills
better than other skills, as for instance, do total parries teach parry and defense?
I've heard it said that when facing an opponent who has only one skill left to learn,
a warrior teaches best that skill he learns best. Does this hold true in other
circumstances? -- Leeta
Question, turn 402:
All -- I understand that Deftness is the ability to better protect and attack your
chosen location. I could care less if I hit my attack location as long as I hit. Does
Deftness have any effect on connecting? I believe it is your attack skills vs. your
opponents def/parry skills that determines this. -- Hanibal's Q.O.W.
Answers, turn 403:
Hanibal -- Deftness contributes a lot of attack skills to a warrior's base skills.
This will increase your warriors' chances of hitting. Shot placement accuracy is said
to be based on coordination (DF+SP), but I think having a good attack rating can lead
to better shot placement as well. Kill desire may well influence shot placement also.
It has been suggested that a warrior's chosen location to protect is the source of the
"luck parry" comment that often results in broken weapons. While I personally fancy
this theory, I think it would be difficult to prove or disprove. It sounds like a
good project for some LP aimers to tackle. -- Generalissimo Puerco
Hanibal -- Re the QOW, probably. At least, I notice that those of my warriors with
very low DF (and I've got some doozies here and there) spend a lot of time flailing
wildly and missing. -- Leeta

ASSUR'S BEGINNER GUIDE TO THE AIMED BLOW STYLE
When a review was done on the design articles from the past, it was discovered
that these articles were not helping players. Many of them were not terrible, but the
players in the game have taken warrior design far beyond the understanding that
existed when most of these articles were written. So to better serve new players, The
Consortium and Assurnasirbanipal took to giving more current design articles for each
style. While even our articles are biased and opinionated, we believe they better
represent today's game than others that exist. This article seeks to remove some
confusion about the Aimed Blow style.
Aimed Blows are THE strongest style at high development levels. They are also
one of the strongest styles with no development. In between, it is much more
difficult for most of them. While they are naturally a hybrid style, I'll explain why
at the top they could be called pure defensives and because of their sustained attack
capabilities, they make fine pure offensives as well.
Aimed Blows have several characteristics that do not exist with any other style.
A) Attack skill bonus for high deftness. B) Dodge advantages with no weapons. C)
Ability to ignore armor. D) Ability to analyze an opponent's defenses. (I don't
believe anyone understands what this does other than it is supposed to help)
There are so many ways to make Aimed Blows that it is almost impossible to give a
set of guidelines for stats. When you first start experimenting with Aimed Blows, I
highly recommend only using setups that can make 17 or 21 deftness on them. 21 is
preferred, but 17 is just fine. Even after you have experience, I don't recommend
going below 15. The reason is because of item A) above. You are permanently reducing
your AB's potential attack by lowering the deftness. It used to be said that: "Any
warrior that makes a good aimed blow makes a better something else." When you lower
the deftness too much, that statement starts to ring very, very true. But at 21
deftness, they have the second highest natural attack in the game (below lungers by 1
attack skill) -- and without lungers high endurance burn.
Now with 1/4 of of your points on deftness, that doesn't leave as much as you'd
like for everything else. Fortunately, 21 deftness is almost magical. Aimed Blows
can succeed with little damage. Aimed Blows can succeed with little endurance (not
recommended: little damage AND little endurance). Aimed Blows can succeed frail.
Aimed Blows can scum to victory. Aimed Blows with 21 deftness and completely balanced
remaining stats can win.
Weapons: SC, LO, FI, EP, and DA are the staple weapons that I use. Most people
leave QS alone until after they know it is their Aimed Blow's favorite weapon (and
people have TC'd with QS). SH, SS, and LS work fine, but I leave those until last.
The 5 I mentioned meet all my needs.
Armor: It depends on how you're trying to win. The Jalon type AB wears APA/F.
Fist/Dodge AB's wear light or no armor. Speed AB's wear nothing or ALE/L. Hybrids
wear what they can depending on their carry & design.
Strategy: x-10 is my 'standard' strat. 'x' is typically 4 or higher. Some
hybrids (generally wearing more armor, though a parry learner might also do this) will
not use 10 Activity Level. As always, you need to tailor your strategy with your
endurance. Going 6-10 for 3 minutes is going to tire just about everyone out. Yes,
most fights are over in 1 minute. But when they go longer, you need to start to
conserve a bit. AB's can use most tactics. I'm sure there are others that have a more
refined way to write the numbers, but I like the simplicity (and effectiveness of the
strategy I use). Note that the super frail guys I typically run 10-10 and the high
str/con guys I'll sometimes run slower with more armor.
Examples: I've chosen to list my own designs that have TC'd and TV'd (and
naturally created -- I have some prize warriors that I don't include here).
17-5-3-5-21-12-21 AB (TC'd Rookies & Freshmen, TV'd ADM)
5-12-6-21-7-12-21 AB (TV'd Rookies)
10-3-12-17-9-12-21 AB (TV'd Rookies)
10-6-16-21-5-5-21 AB (TV'd Rookies & Freshmen)
10-13-6-13-17-4-21 AB (TV'd Rookies)
5-5-10-17-21-9-17 AB (TV'd Rookies)
7-13-7-17-15-4-21 AB (TV'd Rookies)
13-7-5-17-7-14-21 AB (TV'd Apprentices)
9-10-12-11-9-12-21 AB (TV'd Rookies)
4-12-7-21-15-4-21 AB (TC'd Apprentices)
5-8-8-17-17-8-21 AB (TV'd Apprentices)
7-10-5-11-21-9-21 AB (TV'd Rookies)
3-3-11-21-15-14-17 AB (TV'd Dead Apprentices)
9-11-8-11-21-7-17 AB (TV'd Rookies)
11-8-8-21-7-8-21 AB (TC'd Rookies)
11-14-5-13-15-5-21 AB (TV'd Rookies)
9-5-11-11-9-18-21 AB (TV'd Apprentices)
9-3-9-21-9-12-21 AB (TV'd Eligibles)
You'll notice a pattern. I have zero TV's listed in Initiates, Adepts, or Champions.
That is because I have no natural aimed blows that have TV'd in those classes, which
are not good ones for AB's. I also don't have a Challenger TV, but this isn't because
AB's do poorly there.
There is one other example that is worth mentioning. This design does not exist
in the rollup pools, but there are guys that can use this design as a model. It is a
very common design for DYO prizes and in Bloodgames. These monsters have TC'd many
times (almost always in Freshman or higher). The design is named after the first one
that was successful.
Jalon: 17-16-3-3-21-3-21 AB
Advantages: At the very top of the game, their ability to dodge with no weapons makes
them virtually unhittable. So in a sense, at this point, AB's become pure defensives.
Because they also have low endurance burn, they can go a long time (you regularly see
AB vs AB fights go hundreds of minutes at the very top). The bonus is not as great at
lower development levels, but it is still there. Running x-10 (with or without the
dodge tactic) and no weapons is a viable strategy and useful strategy to use at times.
Their high attack, ability to ignore armor, and low endurance burn make them very hard
to beat in long fights. With exceptions for some designs, there isn't a favorite
learn that will make you roll your eyes in disgust. AB's can overcome the dreaded
little damage. AB's can be made from setups that otherwise would be considered
'bad.'B AB's may be the only style that can regularly succeed with very low strength.
Disadvantages: Initiative is a mess for Aimed Blows. They regularly give up the
initiative for no reason. When you give 17 or 21 points on deftness, it limits your
ability to get points where you want elsewhere. Most importantly, having high wit
tends to even make your AB even more deficient than they otherwise are. This is why
they tend to be so bad in Initiates, Adepts, and Champions, where 21 wit is much more
common and important. Those classes are full of 21 wit strikers and lungers, also.
Best Matchups: Scum, Scum, and more Scum. Any defensive warrior (especially
scum). Remember that sustained high attack offensive ability?!? Scum never want to
see AB's. Lots of scum run bizarre strategies to try and beat AB's who would
otherwise destroy them. This is another reason why AB's thrive in Rookies, where
there are lots of scum running around. After scum, any defensive warrior is a good
matchup.
Worst Matchups: Lungers, Bashers, Slashers. These warriors have a combination
of high attack/high init/high decise skill base. They will attack and hit your aimed
blow before it gets a chance to attack back. Strikers also can fall into this
category, because they learn so much attack (and often have 21 wit, too).

DISCOVERING FAVORITE WEAPONS -- THE CONSORTIUM WAY
(List of critical attacks)
There have so many questions of late on Noblish Isle about criticals and The
Consortium warrior weapon rating method that this spotlight becomes quite pertinent.
Good luck in your weapon selections!
Does your battle axe "slice across with tree-felling power"? Or your long sword
unleash a "piercingly accurate thrust"? Or your quarterstaff attack with "berserker
fury"? No? Read on.
A common discussion in D2 is about finding a favorite weapon. Why would anyone
want to find the warrior's favorite weapon? Why? Simply because a warrior usually
fights much better with his favorite in his hand.
Upon graduation to The Isle (Lord Protectorship) each warrior is informed of his
birthright favorites. (Called "faves" by most of us.) That includes, the favorite
weapon, the favorite rhythm, and with luck, some favorite tactics and/or tactic
learns. Warriors also usually fight better when they are on their "faves". This
article is only about the weapon part of a warrior's faves. If one could fine a
warrior's fave early, one would presumably be giving their warrior a nice advantage in
fights. So how does one find a favorite weapon? Actually, you cannot "find" it, but
you can surmise it from the data you collect.
Consortium managers tend to find their warrior's fave weapon appx. 25-45% of the
time before graduation. (Some of the time, the fave is just not discernable; some of
the time, the estimate is just plain incorrect.)
The Consortium method is as follows:
Chart/record these numbers from each fight:
Weapon used
Swings
Crits
Extra value hits
Then record the data by weapon as follows: crits/swings/EHV. For example, a striker may have tried three weapons with these results:
BS 0-21-1
SS 3-13-2
SC 1-19-0
The more crits per swing, the more likely you have found a favorite weapon. (Bear
in mind that a favorite weapon is not the ONLY reason one crits more. Factors like
experience, attack skill quantity, strategy levels, etc., also come in to play.) Even
if it is not the fave, it is certainly a better performing weapon, and ought to be
considered for a lot of use. It is thought that if a weapon is performing well, the
favorite weapon is probably that weapon, or one of a very similar type. For example,
the SS above looks most favorable, so there is some possibility that the fave is that
SS or another lunging type weapon, such as a LO or LS.
One of the more common questions is "Just what is a crit?" We Consortiumites
define it as a swing which "reads with extra ferociousness"! For example, using the SS
above, "lunges with the SS" is a normal swing while "shortspear moves like angry
lightning" is a critical swing.
To alleviate any questions of what is a critical swing, below are listed the best
active list of criticals per weapon.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Perhaps I've turned the corner? That is two in a row against the champ level NPC's.
Or perhaps I've just gotten lucky!
Either way, I now have a nice recognition lead and maybe can finish my 10 turns out
here on top!

SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
NOBLISH ISLAND brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. PHARMANOMICON turned their
4-1-0 turn into a 3rd place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this,
and you get put on hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 4-1-0 is nice, but don't get
cocky, BB CBA NEGOT., the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course,
we're all terribly impressed to see ROGER MOORE win a fight and gain 22 points,
terribly. Tsk, tsk, ROGER MOORE beat BRUTAL BARRACUDA and BRUTAL BARRACUDA lost 17
points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, NOBLISH
ISLAND may be getting bland, as GREED stays top dog in the city. The Warty Toad,
humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From
NOBLISH ISLAND's trash dumps?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
NOBLISH ISLAND, I am losing what little hope I had in you. VICIOUS FISH 2021 the
most avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like
FLOWERS! avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask
me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, OMNI was this turn's most challenged
warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. I guess I can give a little credit to
DANIEL CRAIG of SHAKN-NOT-STIRD for challenging up by 25 to BAD FAITH. DANIEL CRAIG
lost to get 30 points of recognition. And we have BOOZIE SOOZIE in a challenge,
going down 15 points for the fight. Guess what? I thought BOOZIE SOOZIE showed
great skill and promise when she bested SEAN CONNERY. All right, so I slept through
it! Big deal!
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave
team is developing these kinds of weapons?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. I see
the crowds are getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide Clemens

Welcome to all the new teams. We are so glad you have come here. Have fun! -- Rose Of
Sharon, Mgr. Flowers
MY, my, my. Look at all those spotlights in Noblish NL 589! And all that info in the
Personal Ads. Kudos to Hammer, Jorja, Assur, and Sharon Rose. I will just bet this is
one BIG bundle in the mailboxes for all. Great stuff. -- The Consortium
Assur, Hammer, this has got to be embarrassing for you. The Flower collection of
scrubs is now up to 65.7%. Amazing. You let this happen. Tsk. Tsk. -- Rose Of Sharon,
Mgr. (Who likes to throw out a few jabs now and then.)
Beer Bellies, I love, love, love the name BUD THE WISER. Reading it just makes my day
by filling me with chuckles. -- Rose Of Sharon
Palinc Kalverus, what a wonderful spotlight story you wrote! Thanks for sharing it
with us. (Gotta watch out for The Lady; she can get a little testy.) -- Rose Of Sharon
Yuffie Kisaragi, the info of best weapons against armor is in your free C.I.C. package
from RSI. If you haven't requested it, you should. -- Rose Of Sharon
P.S. It is possible that one of the other mentors might publish it in a spotlight next
turn, but don't wait. Ask for the C.I.C. (it has much. much info.)
Shawn, only number three is a critical. The others are just descriptive. -- Rose Of
Sharon
Shakn-not-Stirred, frantic = desperation. -- Rose Of Sharon
Hammer, FYI, The Consortium is presently in thirteen (13) HW games. What a silly old
man! -- Rose Of Sharon
Perilous Piranha, you fought like a fish out of water! -- Daisy, Flowers
Thunderhammer, we fought a while ago, too, and the results were the same. Avoid me,
Hon. -- Poppy, Rose Of Sharon
Edgar Detour, thank goodness I had my Garmin. It showed me the way. -- Iris, Flowers
Daniel Craig, it was my honor to fight a stud like you who wins tournaments. You
showed me that I am but a mere pretty Flower. -- Lily

Health. Humility. Honor. (The Consortium Motto.) -- Rose Of Sharon
Mr. Sean Connery -- It was my honor to battle the greatest James Bond ever! --

Thank you for all the help and advice. -- Shawn, mgr. Phoenix Force
Hope you had a great vacation.
Thanks for including the questions and answers from DM 11. -- Shawn
Team Pharmanomicon -- Thank you for "curing" Tifa Lockhart from wanting a new manager.
However, I didn't think your medication was going to be permanent. My team is looking
forward to some of that Bennakyl, I hope you keep her on the shelf. -- Palinc, mgr. of
FF
Team Lords of Chaos! -- The Dierdre/Yuffie fight was amazing. I thought D. had her and
Y. was going to lose, it really surprised me. Sorry I'm [2-0-0] vs. your team... I
wasn't so lucky against Pharmanomicon. Good luck in the future duels. -- Palinc, mgr.
of FF
All -- So I've been assigned to this team. I hope I can do better than Tifa and not go
out like she did. No medication, please. -- Cid Highwind
WOOF! -- Red XIII
All -- Without my "magic" (the internet) at my disposal, I believe that my [2-3-0]
record is a good start. My team shows more promise than I originally gave credit for.
See you all in the dueling arena. -- Palinc Kalaverus, mgr. of Final Fantasy
All -- Ahoy and Huzzah, Lubbers! I, Captain Pringle manager of the Antiscarbutics,
have returned to my home of Noblish after many moons at sea, bearing with me the
fruits and vegetables I was charged to collect by our great Thane on his weartherly
ship the Circumstance. I bring with me, too, my personal collections of verminous
fighters for the Noblish Island Arena. A special tasting of the Thane's scurvy
fighting delicacies will take place aboard Cimcumstance for all my fellow managers on
the fourth night of the fourth. -- Ling Pringle, Captain, Navigator, Naturalist,
Gladitorial Stablekeeper

versa? -- Mgr. Shakn-not-Stird
Pierce Brosnan -- god speed on your new mission 007, we have full confidence in your
success. -- "M"
Lily -- A formidable opponent indeed, but clearly not an agent of S.P.E.C.T.E.R. That
triumph was for you, Mr. Connery. -- Daniel Craig
XXX -- Not the first time I have "gotten off" lucky while enjoying a XXX experience.
Thank you sir, it was fun. -- Sean Connery

serious treatment in the Infirmary! Salute! -- Brutal Barracuda
Daisy -- You wore me down! Salute! -- Perilous Piranha
Casey Boone -- I finally attacked with my Fist, instead of my Scimitar! The audience
loved your victory! Salute! -- The Alligator Gar
All -- Apparently, the strategies I sent for last cycle failed to arrive at RSI in

various articles! Then implement what you learn in the coming weeks and months of your
growing managerial careers! -- Hammer, Duel 2 Sponsor, mgr of Vicious Fish 2021
All -- I'm really cramped for time today, so I won't write fight-by-fight personals.
Not sure how much use they are when I fight other sponsor-team members. -- Jorja
Which weapons against which armors?!? That is a tough question, one which I don't
think anyone knows for sure. Better is also tricky, because different weapons have
different strengths and some warriors want certain weapons to help them in a certain
area. So I think it is easier to say what certain weapons are good at.
* Damage is first and foremost to help them in a certain area. So I think it is easier
to say what certain weapons are good at. Damage is first and foremost the most
important attribute of weapons.
* SC, LO, BA, and BS are largely considered the top 4 (not counting AB's using FI)
* In general, slashing weapons are the top weapons against most armors. Slash damage
is simply better than bash or lunge overall.
* DA is surprisingly good against APA/APM.
* Bashing weapons have a sweet spot against ASM (and surprisingly not as good against
APM/APA -- not terrible, but not as good as SC/BA/BS)
* Lots of weapons struggle against APA/APM (LO included)
* WF, SH, EP, and to a lesser degree SS are considered low damage weapons.
* MS & WF are largely considered terrible.
* SH has bonuses in a lot of areas, but the damage is sad.
* EP gives a bonus to riposte.
* WF gives a bonus to parry.
* WH, SS, HA, and QS are considered the fastest weapons.
* Lunging weapons (especially LS) have the best knock down ability.
* The 2 handed weapons tend to burn endurance faster and break often when used to
parry.
That is about the extent of my knowledge...
-- Assur
Tifia -- Hilarious! -- Assur
Jorja -- There are lots of other things besides style to focus on, but until you get
the design and style choices working... My articles about styles try to give some of
the other things, but of course focus on what designs work for what styles. Strategy
and armor/weapon choices for those designs that I recommend are also included. I,
personally, am terrible at most tactics, so I don't give a lot of advice on using
tactics. What other things are you referring to? -- Assur
P.S. Obviously there are 'fun' things to do, too. (Write personals, name warriors,
etc, but my version of fun may not match someone else's version -- Lots of managers
try to get names through the censors and cheer when they manage it. The creativity
put into this endeavor is impressive and clearly that is fun for them.)
But not so fun for us... just sayin'. The rollup gods favor clever over raunchy
any day! -- GC
