TEAM SPOTLIGHT
LETTER FROM LAPUR T- 937
Uninterested was devastated by Fright Ride as Assur was able to unseat The Bloke for
bragging rights to manage the current Duel Master in the DM 29 Lapur Arena!
We currently have 12 active stables of various sizes joining in the fights and
hopefully we will have more stables showing up in the near future!
The human spy reporter, writing and signing his name as Eoghan McGrimm, seems to be
well pleased with the turnout as we head into the spring of the year!
Stu Hart is one of the new managers who has arrived in Lapur with his Hart's Dungeon
stable!
There are a few P-ads written, so there are definitely signs of life in the Lapur
Arena newsletter!
Hammer even got around to writing more than one!
Our 5 Card Draw stable logged a 2-2-1 record this past cycle!
Queen Of Hearts took a beating, but the Heart Queen did gain some valuable skill
learns in her loss!
Queen Of Clubs matched up with The Usurous Merchant and the Club Queen managed to get
the win in minute 2, which was quite remarkable as she dropped her weapon in the first
minute!
Jack Of Diamonds murdered Calee in one minute and my friend Diamond Jack better watch
out for the possible Blood Feud, especially if the Visionist decides to try to muster
a Revenge Kill of his own!
Yours truly matched up against Dangerous Criminal, yes that same Dangerous Criminal
who Killed my friend Jack Of Hearts a few cycles ago!
Dangerous Criminal is a Basher fighting with a Quarterstaff and he visibly staggered
me, causing me to drop my Dagger!
I did manage to pull out my Hatchet and get a parry in and even struck him in the
chest, but for some reason I was unable to even make a swing with my Scimitar!
I have been fighting inside of a tin can for the past 17 fights! I have a 4-13-0, 26
record to show for all of my futility on the battle-arena sands!
Rumor has it that Hammer is letting me get out of this tin can! He sent in some new
orders for yours truly, only because he had to send in orders for his Anew Flower
Power stable!
Yes, his Anew Flower Power stable will be fighting soon in DM 93 for ten turns of
training, before Hammer sends Anew Flower Power to replace 5 Card Draw in the DM 29
Lapur Arena!
Some of you New Players should consider sending your stable to DM 29 when you have
finished your ten turns of training!

INTRODUCING ANEW FLOWER POWER
As I had mentioned in my previous DM 93 article titled 'New Stable Prelude', the names
of my warriors for Anew Flower Power had already been selected, prior to seeing what
creation stats that I was being dealt when the new team sheet arrived in the mail.
When the sheet arrived in the RSI envelope, there was great anticipation, as I quickly
looked at the starting stats of my 5 new warriors!
I will be the first to admit that I am a totally complete sucker for creating a
potential 17 Wit / 17 Deftness warrior into my favorite fighting style!
When I first began playing Duel Masters over 30+ years ago, now known as Duel 2, the
creation of Rippers with at least a 17 Wit / 17 Deftness was considered to be a
necessity!
Or, so it seemed to me when I first began reading about creating Rippers!
Back then. we were admonished not to panic if our newly-created Ripper failed to have
a winning record after the first 10 fights, because chances were that by the time said
Ripper graduated from the Basic Arena, said Ripper would graduate as a winner!
That has not always been the case with the Rippers that I have created, but I can
honestly say that I have fun running Rippers, even those with dismally poor losing
records, such as Wild Card Joker in DM 29.
I had already determined that I was sending Anew Flower Power to the Lapur Arena in DM
29, after my newest stable in DM 93 completed their 10 turns of training!
Therefore, it was important to me to decide upon creating 5 warriors that would hold
my interest for competing in DM 29, especially since as a Duel 2 Sponsor, the
Gladiatorial Commission has the DM 93 rule that all Duel 2 Sponsors are prohibited
from sending any warriors to the Dark Arena!
I did consider running two Aimers, after discovering that I could create two 17
Deftness Aimed Blows, but as I mentioned earlier, I am a totally complete sucker for
creating and running 17 Wit / 17 Deftness Rippers!
Besides, although I have had some success over the years from graduating 17 Deftness
Aimers, it has become my preference somewhere along the way to mainly create 21
Deftness Aimers!
Especially, when the choice of creating and running a 17 Wit / 17 Deftness warrior
boils down to making said warrior a Parry Riposte!
Therefore, knowing that I would be creating and running two Rippers on my new DM 93
stable in hopes of sending them to DM 29 to graduate, after their 10 turns of training
in DM 93, my focus turned to how I would create the 3 remaining warriors!
Dandelion Denial 8-16-11-3-10-7-9 became a 10-21-11-3-21-7-11 male Total Parry!
Although my preference is creating Offensive Total Parries, here was the opportunity
to create and run a Scum!
I just could not bring myself to creating a 3 Wit Lunger or a 3 Wit Waste [Wall Of
Steel] with this particular set of numbers!
According to the Over View that I received last cycle, Dandelion Denial has Tremendous
Endurance and can sustain a Tremendous Amount of Damage! Plus, he can do Good Damage!
From what I could tell from the Terrablood Simulate Warrior Creation tool, there was
nothing that seemed to deviate from what I could expect from the initial creation of
this Scum, especially when consulting the Low Wit Chart from the website that Assur
has made available to D2 managers!
What I did discover from the Assur information, my Scum TP having a -4 Initiative
Skills was probably hosed by at least -1 Initiative!
Assur may feel free to correct me regarding my conclusion, especially if I am wrong!
I then took a closer look at the two non-Ripper set of numbers, mainly to see if I
could create a suitable Lunger to help protect my Scum Total Parry from any Aimers
that might threaten my Scum in either DM 93 or especially in the DM 29 Lapur Arena!
Rosebud Blooming 7-10-19-12-9-10-3 became a 10-10-19-17-15-10-3 male Lunger! Certainly
Not an Ideal Lunger by any means!
I could have made him a Striker, but did not, because of the 3 Deftness!
I also could have made him a Basher, but the lack of Strength dissuaded me from doing
so!
The main reason that I made him a Lunger was because of a discussion that I had read
on the Chatzy Duel 2 site! Some of the successful veteran managers were talking about
how successful they had been running their 3 Deftness Lungers armed with a Long Sword
as their weapon!
I figured I might as well try it, especially since the LO requires 11 Strength, 9
Size, 13 Wit and 11 Deftness to be a Well-Suited weapon!
Although my Lunger lacks the Strength and Deftness to be well-suited to the Long
Sword, his 19 Size and 10 Strength has produced a Great Damage rating, according to
his Over View!
Rosebud Blooming only has to get in one or two lucky lunges with the Long Sword to
ruin an Aimer!
I also discovered that my Lunger is at least Blessed with +2 Initiative! The
Terrablood Simulate Warrior Creation reads: Seldom hesitates, moves instantly if given
an opportunity [10-12 Base] but with 11 Initiative Skills at creation his Over View
states: nothing short of a genius at keeping his foes at swords point [13+ Base] which
means he is at least Blessed with +2 Initiative!
Still keeping in mind that I wanted to protect my Scum TP as much as possible, my best
option was to make Violet Visionary 10-10-11-5-12-13-9 into a 15-10-11-7-17-13-11 male
Basher!
Low Wit Warriors have been very vexing to me! However, making a 7 Wit Basher that
according to his Over View has Great Endurance and does Good Damage seemed to be my
best option!
There was No Parry statement on his Over View, but according to Terrablood his 4 Parry
skills would include the following statement: Fails to parry in situations where he
could do so.
Perhaps an explanation from Assur could explain why?
I was not really thrilled about running another Basher, but I saw no other viable
option for creating a warrior that might be able to help protect my Scum TP from enemy
Aimers!
Now for a closer look at the two sisters I am looking forward to running in DM 93 and
hopefully in DM 29 as 17 Wit / 17 Deftness Rippers!
Poppy Popovinski 7-8-10-12-10-11-12 became an 11-8-10-17-10-11-17 female Ripper!
Assur will tell you that you should create a Ripper with at least Good Damage! He is
probably correct, but like I said before: I am a sucker for creating 17 Wit / 17
Deftness Rippers!
At least she does Normal Damage! I have had success with Little Damage Rippers!
She is also Highly Coordinated, but has Poor Endurance, is Very Frail and can not
carry a lot of weight in weapons and armor! Her 10 Will dissuades me from trying to
increase her Strength to Good Damage! I will be content to graduate her from the DM 29
Basic Arena!
According to her Over View: she is nothing short of a genius at keeping her foes at
swords point [13+ Base]: which means that with her 10 Initiative Skills at creation
and Terrablood says her Initiative statement would read: Seldom hesitates, moves
instantly if given an opportunity [8-12 Base] that Poppy Popovinski is at least
Blessed +3 in Initiative!
However, her Riposte statement reads: does a lot of little things well [10-12 Base]
and with 15 Riposte Skills at creation according to Terrablood her Riposte statement
should have been: is a very crafty fighter [13+ Base] so she is Hosed by at least -3
Riposte!
But on the brighter side, her Defense statement reads: has turned avoiding blows into
an art form [7+ Base} but according to Terrablood her 6 Defense Skills at creation
should read: avoids blows well [3-6 Base] so she is at least Blessed +1 in Defense!
Poppy Popularity 10-12-7-12-8-7-14 became a 15-12-7-17-9-7-17 female Ripper!
I was hoping for at least Good Damage, but she also got Normal Damage!
However, she is Ambidextrous, which allows her to wield two weapons with a lower
Deftness requirement and more importantly, she receives a +1 Bonus to her Attack
Skills!
Speaking of her Attack Skills, according to Terrablood at creation her Attack Skills
are 9 and her Attack statement should read: has a very clever fighting style [7-9
Base] However, according to her Over View her Attack statement reads: uses an unusual
fighting style, deadly to slower, less active foes [10+ Base] which means she is at
least Blessed +1 Attack which is a True Blessing!
Always thrilling when a Ripper is Blessed in Attack Skills! At least for me!

Tripwire's Parry-Lunge
Ahh, the Parry Lunge. Strikes fear in the.. wait a minute, it doesn't strike fear into
anyone now does it? I hope to change that my freinds. The Parry Lunge is probably one
of the most diverse styles in the game and that can be a good and a bad thing. Good
because you can do lots of things with them but also bad because they can be tough to
figure out their favorites. The PL has the games best weapon in the SC, the games best
defensive tactic in Dodge and arguably the best offensive tactic in Lunge (and
Decise!). It can be used offensively and defensively with great efficiency.
STATS: I am going to be going with my all around PL instead of the Tank version or the
LU version. I may throw in a few of those later but most people already know what a
tank version (high CN) and a LU version (Low CN) looks like.
ST: 7+
CN: 9+
SZ: as small as possible
WT: 15+
WL: 15+
SP: any
DF: 11+
ST: 9+ is where I try to keep it for SC use. 7 is ok to start with but try to get
9 as quickly as possible. You want Normal+ Damage
CN: Like I said at the start if you go very low you will have to go offensive
with your PL which is ok, but for the purpose of this PL (the all around PL)
I want to keep it at least "takes normal damage".
SZ: Small as possible for defensive points (3-6) and for points being better
elsewhere
WT: 15+ I know a lot of people make PL's with lower 11/13 etc.. But for this
version I want to have as good a WT and learning as possible. For Tanks its
ok to go lower and bump the CN/WL but I want to make a versitile PL with this
one.
WL: 15+ I never go below Normal Endurance, and prefer Good+. Plus 15 WL and 17WL
give you Att/Par/Def so the higher the better!
SP: Isn't needed. We aren't going to be trying to jump anyone.
DF: 11+ Again Att/Par/Def of 2 each starting at 11DF get as much as possible
without hurting your other stats.
Ever had one of those trip 17 WT/WL/DF? But just didn't want another LU? A PL is
perfect for those!
So lets take a look at a few of my favorite PL's that I have graduated and ones that I
have had the most success with:
10-10-9-17-17-4-17 (VL/HI, SC)
11-12-7-21-15-5-13 (HI/HI, LS) 2 Time TV
11-9-8-17-15-9-15 (HI/HI, SC, Parry) 1 Time TV
9-13-10-21-15-5-11, (VL/HI, SH, Dodge) 1 time TV
7-11-13-17-21-4-11, (MO/HI, SS, Parry) 1 time TV
9-13-10-15-15-7-15, (LO/VH, LO)
10-12-5-17-21-8-11, (LO/MO, SC)
STRATEGY: Ok now we get down to it. Strategy. The bread and butter. The PL's can have
favorite Offensive Efforts of VL to HI and favorite Activity Levels of LO to VH, so no
VH OE and no VL AL as favorites. They can be blessed (and hosed) in everything. A
majority of favorites according to terrabloods is MO/MO which seems to fit the mold.
However, I will have to say that I have graduated 12 PL's over my entire career and
only 1 has ever gotten MO/MO. A majority have gotten VL/HI (4) or HI/HI (3), the rest
are scattered around MO/MO.
Ok I am going to use the second PL above for my strategy as I think that is a fairly
easy set of numbers to come by. 11-12-7-21-15-5-13. Lets take a look at the starting
skills: 9/8/13/5/8/6. First thing that comes to mind? Man is he slow! And wow not much
parry! Thats all good though. #1 we aren't looking to jump anyone. #2 the dodge makes
up for it! Here is a little secret. Parry stinks! Dodge is king! I am not saying I
don't use it. I do, but remember that secret when your PL starts moving up into the
Init/Adept ranks. Parry is good early, not so good middle+.
ARMOR/WEAPONS: I NEVER go over encumbrance unless I specifically am challenging say a
ST and know the fight will be over quickly. For the most part I will stick with
Encumbrance or below, in this case 16. So ASM/H (11), vs Light: SC/DA (4), vs Medium:
LO/DA(4), vs Heavy: SC(3), backup DA(1). I always want an offhand weapon in my PL's
grip be it a dagger or shortsword. I am hopefull going to be dodging more than
parrying. A shield would be good if you were just going to parry, but I always say
heck if I am going to hopefully be dodging why have a shield? Put a weapon there and
if you have to parry you still have something in your offhand as well.
Ok now the tricky part. How the heck do I run this guy? His best numbers are (attack
13 and dodge Cool with a nice mix of init (9) and rip (Cool. So we want to what?
Attack and dodge and hopefully be able to keep the init and rip when we do it. Great.
So why not just run 10-10-x and be a lunger? Because then your missing out on Dodge,
natural want to parry and his rip. Why miss out on that stuff when its there? With
this brand new PL I want to use that nice attack but also be ready to move around if
need be. This particular guy has greater defense skills than he does parry skills.
However, PL's like to parry as well. As much as I have been talking about dodge, don't
forget they will parry a lot as well.
Here is how I would run him in his general strat to start:
Min 1: MO/HI Dodge (probably: 5-8-x Dodge).
Min 2: MO/MO (probably: 6-5-x)
Min 3: MO/LO (probably: 5-3-x)
Min 4+: LO/VL (probably: 4-1-x)
Desp: LO/HI Dodge (probably 3-8-x Dodge)
Now the strategy will indeed change depending on the setup of your PL and you need to
really watch how your PL responds to the strategy. I have had many PL's that will
swing like CRAZY going VL/HI or VL/MO. And some that never swing at all running HI/HI.
PL's take a lot of work and a lot of care. It is not one of those styles that you
simply put on autopilot with 1 strat and let go. If you want that go pick a ST or TP
or something. This takes work and is why you will end up loving your PL's more than
other styles IMHO.
If you know you are going against an offensive style use the strat above and even
armor up a bit more if you want (although when I am dodging I don't like to go above
encumbrance). If you are going against a Scum (you probably want to stay away from
them if possible) but if you have to go with very low armor ALE/L, SC backup SC. A
normal endurance PL can go a LONG time if running right. Something like: Min1: 5-3-x,
Min 2+ 4-1-x.
As your PL's begin to get older and gain more skills, drop the tactics! I normally
drop the tactics after Expert in that area. So if he has 16 Parry and 12 Defense. Use
Dodge but not parry. If he has 16 Parry and 16 Defense. Don't force it to use
something it doesn't want (unless in specific situations) let it go at MO/MO or MO/HI
no tactic. Most of my PL's before they graduate never use tactics at all except in
special circumstances. One of my favorite PL's ever was a decise favorite. And the PL
CAN get the Decise tactic as favorite. You would be shocked at how much decise they
get and quickly. Heck if they learn it early on fast, USE the decise tactic and
suprise some Lungers and Slashers out there.
Last note: This is the Tripwire PL. I definately don't mean to step on anyones toes or
say this doesn't work or that doesn't work. I am not a fan of Tank PL's with low WT,
but many people can tell you they work. I am not a fan of the low CN version that runs
like LU's. It works for some, but I haven't had great success. Next time you are
struggling with a rollup that "Should" be a good something. Think about PL. It can
open up a world of new posibilities.
Assur's Addendum
Tripwire's guide is without equal on the Parry Lunge style. That said, I have
following comments (having been focusing on this style for the about 3 years). First,
this is a difficult style to win with. Even armed with this guide, you will not find
winning trivial (especially in tourneys).
Next, a couple items I'd like to highlight from his article:
For best results, you will need to pay close attention to your PL.
"This takes work and is why you will end up loving your PL's more than other
styles IMHO." -- I haven't put in the work, so I can't comment directly on this
statement, but after my 12 grads, I have not fallen in love with my parry lungers more
than my other styles. I only hope that one or more of them does turn into a
successful warrior in ADM or Eligibles (where they seem to have the most success).
I have had more success with more STR & CON than he recommends as minimums than
with closer to the minimums. I have modeled my PL's after his, but the ones on the
higher side of STR/CON have done better for me. I've also not had many of the better
kind of setups he's described here (they are more rare than common). Almost all my
PL's started 11 deftness, so I haven't followed his model perfectly in this regards.
Interestingly at the time of this writing, my lone TV with a Parry Lunger is:
21-12-7-17-9-7-11 PL, who doesn't fit the model well at all. You'll also notice
that with one exception, the TV PL's that Tripwire mentions are also not at the
minimum CON level.
SPY REPORT
It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! Nothing is certain in NOBLISH ISLAND, with changing loyalties, changing
Duelmasters. Write this down: new top team--CRIMSON SCOURGE. What's a move up by 3
you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to
CRIMSON SCOURGE. Practice pays for ROSEBUD BLOOMING, who pummelled EBONY EYES, to
pocket 18 points. AIRPORT TAXI certainly had a baffled expression on his face, after
losing to DRAKE and losing 14 points in the process! Our Duelmaster has lost, folks,
lost to KUNG-FU MASTER, BUT CELERIS SSVALEN is still the Duelmaster because she has
the most recognition points! Word has it one team in NOBLISH ISLAND is using
psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
So much to report, so little time! Like a horde of jackals fleeing from the
lion, so did the "warriors" in NOBLISH ISLAND avoid EVERLY BROTHERS. The warriors of
EVERLY BROTHERS found their efforts at combat frustrated as BB BACHELOR AGAIN
apparently had more important things to do than fight. Is it charming personality?
Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, KATHMANDA KATZ is the
most challenged warrior.
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... I get a special
thrill from seeing innocent girl like CATHY'S CLOWN from EVERLY BROTHERS get
pointlessly killed. Good show, GRASSHOPPER! (No mercy.) Ask not for whom the sword
slashes; it slashes for thee.
Do not think spyreporting in NOBLISH ISLAND is the highlight of my life. As the
seasons change, and the creatures of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to
leave this place. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for
NOBLISH ISLAND? On that giddy note I take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir
