======== The Fantasy Parry-Riposte ========

I have been meaning to write this for some time, so what better way to strike down
procrastination than to write it now. I am still a Noob in training warriors to battle
in the Duel 2 arena. I knew after Lady Sheila Greywand threw me out of the Isle of the
Eye, took my magic, and forced me into servitude managing the Final Fantasy stable I
was going to have much work to get back into her good graces and readmitted into the
Stronghold Academy. I learned some from Dante Killatroll [Nerd Nation (657) @ DM 17)
and knew I wanted to tran a fighter in the Parry-Riposte style for sure. I enjoy
challenging myself with the more "difficult" Defensive styles. Of my first five
warriors ever in the arena, my Parry-Riposte is the only fighter still alive and
thriving with an (12-5-0) record, even though I throw her into some tricky situations.
Her record after the first tean rounds at Noblish Island was (7-3-0). I will NOT be
speaking of her Grand Tournament record of (1-12-0) in four tournaments; I hope she
doesn't read this newspaper.
She started as 11-11-11-15-15-6-15, for some reason I think someone will know what
those numbers mean. Her only blessings were at least +61 to her endurance and
Ambidextrous, with no hosing that I can see. She is also very pleasing to the eyes,
extremely attractive. I also believe she has the "knack" that can't be taught because
her fights surprise me more often than not and are way fun to watch. Everything else
about her correlates with CIC regulations (Consortium Information Collection, which I
highly suggest you request from the Gladiatorial Commission. It has very, very helpful
information). I am sure to NOT overwork and skill burn her and have trained her up to
12-12-11-16-16-6-15, again with those numbers... I don't understand why I should know
what they mean. Anyways, I will have to wait till she learns 20 skills in Riposte
before training her Deftness from 15 to 16, or 20 skills in each Initiative and
Decisiveness to train her speed up from 6 to 7. My Parry-Riposte is learning the right
Defensive (Riposte, Parry, and Defensive) skills mostly. So everything about her
learning and training I am very happy with.
FANTASY Parry-Riposte Minimum "suggested" Stats:
STR: 11+ (10 is okay if you have a 15+ will, then train to 11)
CON: 10+ (You will most likely get hit early in your career)
SIZ: Any (You want to try for Normal HP and Good Damage)
WIT: 15+ (for training skills
WIL: 15+ (for Normal+ endurance and training stats)
SPD: Low (preferably an even number for the Riposte, don't add any here)
DEF: 15+ (for the Defensive (Rip/Par/Def) skills, 11 or 13 might work
I coach multiple different strategies with my Parry-Riposte; I want to keep her
opponents guessing how she is going to fight each round. And well she is very
temperamental, especiallly if you bring up her tournament record. I will be omitting
her kill desires and tactics, because she is still fighting in the Aljafir (DM 17)
arena. However, you can safely assume I would NOT direct her to use the Bash tactic. I
modify each minute to conserve her energy, or to maximize the tactic she will use. For
instance, she won't have an Activity Level of 8 if she is using the Parry tactic, or
an Offensive Effort of 2 with the Slash tactic. I believe that the Offensive Effort
has to do with attacking and the Activity Level has to do with movement during battle.
I could be wrong about this, though -- remember I am still learning.
FAST:
Offensive Effort: 7-10
Activity Level: 7-10
Armor/Helm: ASM/H or lower on both
MEDIUM:
Offensive Effort: 3-6
Activity Level: 5-8
Armor/Helm: APM or APA/H or F
ATTACK LOCATION: Tell your Parry-Riposte to attack any limb... legs (RL/LL) and arms
(RA/LA) don't have many hit points and if you constantly hit the same limb, odds are
your opponent will give up.
PROTECT LOCATION: Doesn't really matter. It is recommended that your warrior keep
their head on their shoulders, or their legs under themselves.
WEAPONS: It is very beneficial for any warrior to be ambidextrous; it is like having
two main hands. She has used almost EVERY combination with two weapons using the
Shortsword (SH), Scimitar (SC), and Longsword (LO) with each working excellently.
(Example: SH/SH, SH/SC, LO/SC, SC/SC, etc.) She doesn't use backup weaspons because if
she drops one, she still has another weapon in her other hand. She does much better
with one weapon in each hand, dual-wielding. I do not suggest the Epee (EP) early in
any warrior's career; and have lost every fight when she tried using the Shortspear
(SS) and Longspear (LS).
Well, I am happy that I have finally written this to share with the WHOLE WORLD...
well the WHOLE Aljafirrian population, it's not like this newspaper is delivered
anywhere else. I really hope you find some use in my ramblings and try your hand
instructing a fighter in the Parry-Riposte style. I do have to caution you, training
and nurturing your Parry-Riposte takes time. When you see the fruits (fight report) of
your labor (turn sheets), it is very rewarding to watch your Parry-Riposte take on
more highly-skilled, more experienced fighters and win. Good luck on the sands and may
the Gods' influence be in your favor.

LETTER FROM LAPUR T-942
Dismal is the only way I can describe how our stable fared in the DM 29 Lapur Arena
last cycle!
The four of us combined for an 0-4-0 record and my friend Jack Of Diamonds managed to
survive the Infirmary!
This may sound like a stuck record, but Fright Ride remains atop the DM 29 Throne!
There were 10 active stables and there is still plenty of room for more stables!
Spy Reporter Olaf Modeen was replaced by our own Human Spy Reporter Eoghan McGrimm and
reading his accounts of what transpire in the DM 29 Lapur Arena is well worth the
price of sending a stable here and actively fighting each turn!
Hammer was conspicuously absent from the Personal Ads!
The Bloke was his usual cheerful self in the Personal Ads!
Assur was his usual silent self in the Personal Ads!
Hopefully some writers will send stables to the DM 29 Lapur Arena in the near future!
I am suffering a severe case of writer's cramp from my most recent beat down!

Basics of Strategy, part 3
Hybrids, (not including tank offensives):
Let's assume you've designed a great hybrid warrior, who has skills in all the
right places and the right mix of physicals for his style. There is not a 'catch all'
strategy for these warriors. In fact, one of the things that makes hybrids so hard to
run (even after you have the right design) is that not all hybrids respond the same to
the same strategy.
Offensive Effort is the 'easiest' number to decide on. Find what works for your
warrior and stick with it. Most hybrids operate best on the favorite Offensive Effort.
You can find other articles talking about favorites and what is likely for your
warrior. While usually avoiding 1-2 is adviseable, I've seen scum and parry ripostes
do nasty things at 1-2 offensive effort.
Activity Level is tougher. Higher is often better and it often won't hurt your
warrior to run at 10 AL. It makes your warrior move around, helping dodge and your
willingness to strike, but 10 AL will burn endurance fast and probably hurts parry.
For a Lunger with lots and lots of endurance, I highly recommend 10 AL. For a Parry
Striker that isn't learning defense skills, maybe not so much. Once again, if you can
find a number that works well, go with it. Assur starts most of his hybrids at 5-10 AL
and works from there.
All that said, you might opt to run your hybrid differently in different minutes.
My comments above are assuming you are expecting a short fight (which is usually the
case). For a hybrid with high parry, you might go with a parry strategy minute 1 and
slowly wake up in minutes 2 and 3. For a lunger hybrid, you might opt for very high
numbers in minute 1, then go with some endurance conserving strategy in later minutes.
Work with your warrior and style and his strengths and weaknesses. And use your
challenges, avoids, and your alternate strategy to mix it up a bit.
Armor: DO NOT OVER ENCUMBER YOUR HYBRID!!! One popular formula for determining
your carry ability without penalties is to add your Strength to the lesser of
Strength/Constitution and subtract 6. This is the number of points your warrior can
carry. After you've determined the max you want to carry, that helps you decide your
armor/weapons. For higher dodge, Assur recommends ARM or lower, even if you can carry
more, in most fights.
Weapons: Feel free to try and find your favorite weapon, but most of Assur's
warriors use the best weapon they can use given their stats. SC, BS, BA, LO are all
great choices if you can use them and highly recommended. For basic strategy, it is
tough to go wrong with those weapons.
I am going to skip the counter strategy section against hybrids.
1) Different hybrids fight differently
2) It is pretty rare to find yourself against an unbeatable hybrid
3) Most of the time, it is combination of skills and luck that will determine
the outcome of these fights.
If you do find yourself sharing an arena with one of the few hybrids that appears
to wipe the arena sands with anyone they face, I recommend avoiding that warrior.
These warriors are special and often look really mediocre until they get on the sands.

I am Bird Dog, the three-time Duelmaster. Heed my words. I miss my teammate Ebony
Eyes, but I warned her to get out of the arena before she was killed. I warned her.
Why?
Aimed Blows tend to die. They do. Lower will warriors tend to die. She was. (7
WL.) Added to that she was big. (17 SZ) Not fat! Big and beautiful. Three death
factors against her. (sigh) I tried to warn her. But now she is dead.
Heed my words.

SPY REPORT
You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to NOBLISH ISLAND once again! Woof! BB BACHELOR AGAIN were a
bunch of dogs after EVERLY BROTHERS got through with 'em! 2nd ain't so sweet as 1st!
It seems so recently people were saying EVERLY BROTHERS was washed up, finished. But
4-1-0 moved them up 1. I guess they're washed no more... What's with BOWLING GREEN?
It actually beat BB BACHELOR AGAIN's CLEANING, and walked away with 16 more points
from the fight. Laughs were big at EVERLY BROTHERS while they watched BOWLING GREEN
clobber CLEANING. He lost 12 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the
stands. Our Duelmaster has lost, folks, lost to KUNG-FU MASTER, BUT BIRD DOG is
still the Duelmaster because he has the most recognition points! I suppose you want
to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was EVERLY BROTHERS. The bums at BB BACHELOR AGAIN couldn't face
the challenges from EVERLY BROTHERS! No excuse for that! How well I know the
feeling of being the most challenged warrior, DON JUAN! Don't make idle boasts, they
may come back to haunt you. ROSEBUD BLOOMING didn't quite know what to make of a
challenge he received from CATACLYSIM KATZ of CLOWDER OF KATZ, who is 23 points below
him. CATACLYSIM KATZ perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she was beat by
ROSEBUD BLOOMING and ended up with 2 recognition points.
Warriors of NOBLISH ISLAND unite. You have only your games to lose! Many a
warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note!
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
