WHAT THEY WON'T TEACH YOU IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
SO COME TO NOBLISH ISLE TO REALLY, REALLY LEARN

 - Any warrior that loses a fight can die. Dead. Gone. One can die by being
mercilessly killed by the opponent, and, sadly, every loser has a small chance
(estimated odds 1 in 50) of dying in the infirmary. Note: There is NO chance of
dying if one wins! So WIN!
 - Any warrior can use any weapon. Not a problem However, there are undefined
penalties for using marginal, unsuited, inadequate wit, inadequate size, inadequate
strength, and inadequate deftness weapons. One can certainly win with an improperly
suited weapon, but, is it worth the chance? Usually not, I say. (I said usually!)
 - Warriors are born with certain skills which are dependent on the base 70 point stat
sheet and the style selected. The 14 points of added stats also add skills to those
base skills. You really need to know which skills come from what stat. (So check
   out that C.I.C.)
 - RSI seldom makes input errors. I said seldom. The best thing a manager can do to
help avoid input errors is to fill out the strategy sheet accurately and legibly
with good penmanship. Yes, we have doctors in the warrior management ranks
(Slugbait and Grimm come to mind) and they probably regret their yucky penmanship.
 - These are considered the best ways to acquire info, knowledge and "secrets" about
   D2:

          * Terrablood.com
          * Assur's site
          * Noblish Island (DM93) newsletters
          * Reality.com

 - There is more to strategy than filling out the warrior's initial armor and weapon
selection and offensive effort and activity level and kill desire and tactic
selection. Challenges and avoids are an important way to attempt to give your
warrior an advantage. Challenge warriors (warrior ID) that your warrior is likely
to defeat and learn a lot from, and avoid teams (team ID) with warriors whom are
likely to defeat you. (Remember, if you lose, you could die!) Indeed, your warrior
can be provided with an alternate strategy for challenging or when being challenged
or both. A warrior does not have to ever challenge, bloodfeud, or avoid, but it is
almost certainly in his best interest to do so.
 - Ask dumb questions! Often managers, especially new managers, have a doubt or a
question, but they feel "asking for help/advice" is a sign of weakness or lack of
intelligence or knowledge about D2. Do not let this be you! Ask! We dumb veteran
managers ask each other dumb questions all the time. One man's dumb is another
man's smart. (You heard it here first!)
 - What are the best ways to ask?

          * On the Reality.com site
          * On the D2 Chatzy blog site
          * In personal ads in the arenas (especially Noblish Island)
          * By diplo to another manager in D2 (Certain managers will almost always respond; some may not)

 - No matter what any veteran, friend or expert tells you about design or strategy or
concept, it is not necessarily the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the
truth. It may be good or great or common advice, but it is not necessarily the only
good (or bad) advice. Some advice is best learned first-hand.
 - D2 is a normally a friendly atmosphere. While managers are very competitive, most
of the vets know each other, see each other at FTF Tournaments, chat with each
other on line, and even help each other out with advice and ideas. The fount of
knowledge available now, about D2, was acquired by a collective "working together"
and sharing info. Be advised that an overly mean, overbearing, threatening,
haughty, unfriendly character/manager is likely to be colluded against and
ostracized by D2 regulars. Smack talk is desirable and a part of the game. Personal
threats, harsh meanness, or overbearingness is not at all welcomed. You are
   forewarned!
 - Noblish Island is a great learning atmosphere. What comes after Noblish? Choose
wisely an arena (or two!) in which to participate.

          * Fast (two week turnaround) or slow (four weeks)
          * Large (15+ teams participating), medium (8-14ish), small (7 or less)
          * Friendly (usually Andorian arenas are up for role-playing and up for helping newbies, and down on down-challenging or taking advantage of newbies), or Cutthroat (Darkholm arenas tend to be win-at-all-cost).
You can participate in as many arenas as you want. You can also participate in
separate tournaments, held quarterly, which allow warriors from all arenas to
compete with each other for acclaim and prizes.

There are many other things they apparently didn't teach you, you say? Well send
a personal ad or diplo to Assur, or Hammer, or Jorja, or The Consortium rep in DM93
Noblish Isle and give them a shot at answering in the newsletter.

LETTER FROM LAPUR T-944

Hammer has been so busy lately with real-life matters, Dueling and dabbling around
some place called Hyboria that is at War, that he either mis-placed the envelope
containing the T-944 results or it just has not arrived yet in his mail box!

Fright Ride is still the reigning DM in the DM 29 Lapur Arena! Fright Ride also
managed to write a DM Column this turn! However, there was no invite to the Isle of
the Eye for Fright Ride!

The Bloke is still exhorting any manager within ear-shot to avoid his stable! [Avoid
Me!]

Eoghan McGrimm managed to write a better-than-average Spy Report for the Lapur Arena
Newsletter! However, we only had 9 active stables!

Some of you New Players should send your stable over to the DM 29 Lapur Arena, so that
McGrimm has some new fodder for writing his Spy Reports!

Queen Of Hearts and Jack Of Diamonds were the only winners for our stable!

Which means that my own personal losing streak continues extending!

"May You New Players Fare Better Than I Do!"

ENHANCE YOUR DUELING EXPERIENCE [Reprinted for the New Players]

I have mentioned this before in greater detail, but that was some time ago last year
and now there are New Players finding their way onto the DM 93 battle-arena sands!

First, it is always a good practice to be consistent in writing Personal Ads in the DM
93 Arena Newsletter, or any other Duel 2 newsletter for that matter!

Although being articulate and spelling words correctly in English are always the
seemingly better way to communicate in the P-ads, please do not shy away from writing
due to the high bar of English grammar!

If you struggle with words and sentence structure, just make that part of the
personality of your warriors and especially your managerial alias!

P-ads always enhance the newsletter!

The signs of a lively Duel 2 Arena can be found in the number of active stables, plus
the quality, if not the quantity, of P-ads that are written each cycle!

I am not always consistent with writing P-ads in other arenas, because quite frankly,
the due dates tend to sneak up on my real-life schedule of personal priorities!

Not every manager likes to write, but if you are willing to stretch yourself and make
an honest attempt at writing P-ads, if only one each cycle, then you will find a
deeper satisfaction in playing this game!

Insults, bravado, lamentations, questions, answers, incoherent drivel and all the
extremes of literary communication are yours for creating interesting, or at times
even compelling, P-ads in the arenas where you are actively fighting your stable(s) of
warriors!

Secondly, the writing of Team Spotlights also is a way of enhancing your dueling
experience!

Introducing your manager alias and warriors is always a great way to break the ice,
especially when you begin to fight in a new arena!

You can spin yarns about your current warriors, sending them out on bizarre
adventures, or you can have them sitting around a campfire or in a tavern, sharing the
legends of their forefathers or a warrior of great honor from days-gone-by!

Better yet, write about such adventures and legends from the perspective of your
manager alias!

Let your imagination run wild as a Bard sharing stories in the Arena Newsletters Team
Spotlights!

The possibilities are endless!

Get your creative juices flowing!

Writing just for fun in an Arena Newsletter Team Spotlight will greatly enhance your
dueling experience!

"May Your Blades Be Sharp and Your Wits Sharper!"

BB Air Travel 2 -- Things you shouldn't do...

I'm going to do this spotlight a little different. This is a game, so the
ultimate goal is to have fun. So that causes managers who've been at it for decades
to sometimes do things that are not in their own best interest for winning. I've set
a strange goal to one day graduate 10 warriors representing 10 styles on the same turn
from the same arena. So my goals this time are 'different'. I just ran a team with 5
styles. This team will represent the other 5 styles. I will also give a
'recommended' design for each warrior...

Warrior 1: 3-5-14-10-13-14-11 -- 8-5-14-15-17-14-11 SL
Given the low endurance, I'd recommend a striker with the same stats.

Warrior 2: 14-12-9-12-5-9-9 -- 17-14-9-17-7-9-11 PS
Absolutely the wrong style on this one. TP or PR would be a better choice.
And because of the low skills, maybe use a 17-12-9-17-7-9-13 design, also.

Warrior 3: 4-10-10-10-9-14-13 -- 7-10-10-15-9-14-17 AB
Hmmmm. My notes have those as the numbers I used, but that is only 82 points. Last
two points could go on str, con, spd, or dft. There are other ways to design this. I
wanted an AB, so this makes lots of sense. I'll leave my recommendation as my AB, but
realize that this warrior can go a lot of ways to meet a lot of goals. 7 str and 11
wit are 'must' adds. For most styles, 9 strength is also desired (or 8 with training
to 9).

Warrior 4: 6-13-13-7-12-12-7 -- 8-15-13-10-16-12-10 PL
I'm burning this and running it as a pure defensive. Not a terrible option, but if I
was recommending a design for a new player, I'd give the following design and advice:
7-13-13-11-17-12-11 LU and keep this guy on a short leash. If it doesn't win, DA it.
Train strength to 9 early in its career and if it fails too many trains, also DA it.
This is a setup that doesn't quite add up to what you 'want' to make it. My desires
on this guy: 11-13-13-13-17-13-11 LU. That hits all the breakpoints. But that is WAY
too many points. So you see my compromise design. The Consortium would likely
recommend and make a pure defensive total parry (which is almost certainly a design
that wins more).

Warrior 5: 11-12-11-10-13-9-4 -- 11-17-11-10-19-9-7 TP
When looking at low deftness warriors, most often you should look at the high attack
offensives (BA/SL), total parries, and lungers. You can also consider strikers and
wall of steels. With the high con/wil, this one definitely leans towards a pure
defensive total parry. My design is one of several possible designs.

                                          -- Assur

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

My name is "Problems", one of the finest of all Everly Brothers songs. Like this:

Problems, problems, problems all day long
Will my problems work out right or wrong
My baby don't like anything I do
My teacher seems to feel the same way too

Worries, worries pile up on my head
Woe is me I should have stayed in bed
Can't get the car my marks ain't been so good
My love life just ain't swingin' like it should

               Problems, problems, problems
They're all on account-a my lovin' you like I do
               Problems, problems, problems
They won't be solved until I'm sure of you
You can solve my problems with a love that's true

And, apparently, I am and have been a problem for other warriors in this arena.
My 8-0 record attests to that.
I am proud to be your Duelmaster, and with next round being the 10th and final
one for the Everly Brothers team, I only have one final shot at another title.
I wish you all good luck in your days on Noblish Isle and in the future arenas
that you may pursue.

                                          -- Problems

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, NOBLISH ISLAND? Ain't you never seen Snide
Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. I can just hear all the boasts
coming in BB AIR TRAVEL 2's next personal ads. Their first turn they went 4-1-0. Of
course, we're all terribly impressed to see CATHERINE KATZ win a fight and gain 18
points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, CATAMOUNT KATZ beat WALK RIGHT BACK and WALK RIGHT BACK
lost 12 points. You're breakin' my heart. And it's out with the old, in with the
new, as BIRD DOG takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster.
Heh, heh. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You
want to know what's new, don't you, NOBLISH ISLAND?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. NOBLISH ISLAND, I am losing what little hope I had in
you. CLOWDER OF KATZ the most avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say.
And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know?
It was EVERLY BROTHERS. Ha ha ha ha!
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for NOBLISH
ISLAND's morgue. More variety. And now a passing thought on a warrior dying young
(POPPY POPULARITY of ANEW FLOWER POWER): You had your chance and now you're dead.
Oh well... Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing
these kinds of weapons?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Glad
to see the back of this place-- Snide Clemens

Dante Killatroll, that was a fine wall-of-steel spotlight. Salute! -- Agent Smith and
other Consortiumites

Ah, a 3-2 for the Everly Brothers, but yet another death of the original warriors who
started nearly 10 turns ago. Of the originals, only Bird Dog remains, with Ebony Eyes,
Cathy's Clown, Let It Be me, and now Bowling Green all having died in battle. Songs
don't last forever at the top of the charts, do they? -- Agent Smith

Lightning Rod and Crimson Scourge, Consortium teams do not Bloodfeud in the Noblish
Island arena. -- Agent Smith (feeling sad at the death of Bowling Green)

Yikes! Two recent losses to NPCs have tumbled me from the DM throne. If I can't beat
them, I don't deserve the Title anyway. -- Bird Dog

Ambitious Guard, take that! I am pretty ambitious also! -- Problems, Duelmaster

Rainstorm, I was the thunder and the lightning. -- Walk Right In

Violet Visionary, it was a good fight and I was lucky to win it. Salute. -- Bye Bye
Love

I wish you all good luck and great pleasure in your time fighting in D2. I cannot yet
introduce the next Consortium team, as that has not yet been decided. -- Agent Smith

Health. Humility. Honor. -- Agent Smith (quoting The Consortium motto.)

Agent Smith -- Great insights regarding Tourney competition! -- Hammer

New Players -- The articles about Wastes and Staying Alive will prove to be helpful to
those of you who analyze and apply what you learn! -- Hammer

Agent Smith -- Thanks for your encouraging words! -- Hammer the WordSmith

Melon Smasher -- Wicked Wiffle! Glad you ran out of gas! Salute! -- Dandelion Denial

Grasshopper -- My first win! Glad you survived the Infirmary! Salute! -- Poppy
Popovinski

Laundry -- I survived the Infirmary! Salute! -- Rosebud Blooming

Bye Bye Love -- I also survived the Infirmary! Salute! -- Violet Visionary

Catherine Katz -- You almost won! Salute! -- Poppy Popularity

about Enhancing Your Duel2 Experience! Remember that the DM 29 Lapur Arena is still a
