Perhaps you have heard about tournaments and you thought "I think that might be fun; I
wish I were experienced enough to fight a warrior in a tournament, but I am
uncomfortable doing it since I am but a newbie." Well, you should know that entering
is simple; anyone, even an inexperienced manager can do it; and it is so much fun that
you don't want to miss out. Let me tell you all about tournaments and give you a real
life example of a warrior I entered from Noblish Island.

Key things you will learn in this example:

     1. 4 tournaments plus their type and timing
     2. FE = Fight Equivalents
     3. Tournament Prep
     4. Some basic Consortium aimed blow strategies
     5. What a true godling aimed-blow looks like.

So, on to the spotlight........................................................

The purpose of this spotlight is to give newcomers to D2 a sense or feeling or
information about tournaments, in this case a Mail-In tournament. Hence, Orange of
Distinct Colors, a previous Noblish Island warrior, was selected as the guinea-pig.

So, a tournament. Four times a year RSI holds tournaments. Winter and Summer are Face-
To-Face Tournaments where managers compete on-site against and can change strategies
each and every fight if they wish. The winter Face Site has always been in Tempe, AZ,
(The RSI Home Site) while the summer event is held in varying cities east of the
Mississippi. (like Washington, DC; Cincinnatti, OH; Tampa, FL; Chicago, IL....) They
are very easy to enter as all one needs to do is send in a strategy sheet via mail or
fax. Simple! Both events cost $7.00 per warrior and are great fun. Warriors compete in
classes, thereby allowing similarly experienced warriors from all arenas to be fairly
matched with each other. In tournaments, a warrior's chance to learn skills or earn
stat increases is half that in normal arenas. Supposedly, the chances of dying are
also halved.

I entered Orange of Distinct Colors from Noblish Island in The January 2021 Mailer.
Prior to fighting Orange in The Mailer, I wanted to give him the best possibility to
succeed. I wanted to prepare him for the Apprentices class. Classes are segregated by
FE (Fight Equivalents). What is a fight equivalent? Each arena fight counts as one
fight and any tournament fights count as a half fight. The Apprentices Class is for
warriors with 1-4 FE. Having no tournament fights prior, I wanted to "max" Orange for
Apprentices. By "max" I wanted him to fight with the maximum FE possible in that
class. By doing so, I would optimize his chances to succeed. (Warriors improve via
experience and skills or stats earned. Most all warriors fighting in tournaments are
"maxed" at the top FE for their class.) In this, I failed. Hence, Orange went into the
Mail-In Tournament Apprentices Class with only 2 arena fights -or 2 FE -, instead of
the desired 4.)

Pre-Tournament, Orange looked like this:

17-4-6-21-10-5-21 Aimed Blow. Poor Endurance and Good damage. Ambidextrous (which adds
one attack skill to his base). A masters rating in Attack. Most managers would define
this as a "godling" or a very fine warrior design. (Note: new aimed-blows are known to
die easily and quickly, both in the arena and in tournaments -- especially ones with
very little CON.)

Orange did decently in the tournament, finishing 3-3 against the best Apprentices in
the land. He also learned/trained well, earning 7 skills plus he came out alive!
Perhaps a general fight-by-fight summary would prove of value?

First, let me list for you the two strategies I chose and my training regimen I mailed
in for Orange. (Note: In no way should these strategies be deemed as common or starter
strategies for aimed-blows as aimers are a special, odd, and differing breed!)

     Normal strategy:
      7 - 7 - 7 - 6 - 6 - 5 - 7 ASM/S
     10 - 6 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 -10 0-8: EP & FI
      2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 9+: LO
      - - - - - - - bu: none
      D - - - - - D
(dodge in minutes 1 and desp)

     Alternate strategy: (against TP)
      7 - 7 - 6 - 6 - 5 - 5 7 ALE/L
      3 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 -10 0+: SC & FI
      7 - 7 - 7 - 8 - 8 - 8 - 2 bu: SC (in primary hand)
      - - - - - - -
      S - S - S - S - S - S - D

     Training Regiment = all skills

Strategies, armor, weapons, backups, tactics, alternate strategy against, training,
etc, etc are all variable, and explaining MY choices or normal Consortium choices
would require a much, much longer spotlight. Perhaps another day.

As to Orange's tournament action:

Fight one against a sz7 ambi AB (apl/h lo/-) -- Orange jumped him and one-swing hit
him for the win. Orange learned two parry skills.

Fight two, a lunger sz6 (ale/s sh/-) -- Orange swung first and hit, then Orange took a
second swing -- a crtitcal hit -- and finished the fight. Orange earned a riposte
skill.

Fight three, a striker sz6 (apl/f sc/-) -- The striker jumped Orange and one-hit him
with the scimitar to finish it quickly. Orange learned a decisiveness skill.

Fight four, a ripper (parry-riposte) sz 8 (asm/-, sc/-) -- Finally a longer fight!
Orange swung twice and hit. The ripper riposted and swung wildly. Orange threw a
critical hit and knocked the ripper down. With the opponent on the ground, Orange
threw two more critical hits to finish him off. Orange learned a parry skill. (Hey, 3-
1; maybe Orange is going places!)

Fight five against a sz6 lunger (arm/l, lo/-; with the lunger lacking the WIT for the
LO) brought Orange's thoughts of glory back to earth! It was all the lunger's fight,
with hi swinging four times, and Orange dodging one and parrying one, but the other two
hurt. Orange learned a riposte skill.

Fight six ends Orange's tournament as he opposes a sz3 apl/l fi/- aimed-blow. It was a
great, but sad, fight and it went something like this: bad guy punches, orange dodges;
bad guy kicks and Orange parries with the epee giving bad guy some damage; Orange
ripostes and swings, but bad guy dodges; Orange throws a critical, but the bad guy
crit dodges; bad guy grabs the initiative and makes a critical punch which connects
with Oranges jaw and the fight is called. Orange learned a defense skill.

I am pleased with the 3-3 and the skills learned. It is not at all a bad result for a
two-fight warrior in the Apprentices class. Presuming, I can keep him alive, Orange
will very likely fight in more future tournaments.

The Parry Strike Style According to Assur

A request was made to fill out our style articles. After my Tournament Champion
run with a parry striker, I'm as qualified as anyone to talk about the parry striking
style. First, this style is almost unquestionably the worst style in the game. Their
initial skills are on the low side. Their favorites are typically bad. Their natural
learning is not quite the worst of all styles. They are easily the hardest style to
win with in tournaments.

So why should you make a parry strike warrior? First, people like to try and
experience everything this game has to offer. Second, they are one of the most
flexible styles in the game. Their ability to change things up is unparalleled.
Thirdly, they seem to fight better than their skills would suggest. Fourth there is a
greater chance for them to be bonused or cursed in skills than other styles. So they
are not without advantages. But they are still the worst style, overall, in the game.

They naturally learn decise and parry, both powerful skills in the basic game.
That would suggest making pikers that take advantage of one of these skills. They
conserve endurance very well, so that suggests that they can skimp on will in design.

I'm going to base my comments from here forward on what I've succeeded with in
tournaments. I know for a fact that you can win outside of these suggestions, but
winning in tournaments is the pinnacle of this game, so I'm only going to share what
has worked for me in touranments.

    Design:

STR: 6-17 (recommend 9-17 for weapons & damage)
          CON: 5-12
          SIZ: 3-11
          WIT: 17-21 (recommend 21)
          WIL: 7-21 (prefer 15, 17, or 21)
          SPD: 4-16
          DFT: 11-17

As you will see, the most important feature on these pikers is wit! Second is
deftness. Most of my success stories have 11 deftness, but higher doesn't prevent
success. All but one of my TV pikers had good damage, one had great damage. But I've
been close twice with normal damage. Endurance does not seem to be important (the
range on my successful pikers is poor to good).

Great stats do NOT ensure success with pikers.
My TC was a DYO type at 12-7-7-21-21-5-11.
But I have a near perfect natural stat 15-5-10-21-17-5-11 that learns attack that has
been completely mediocre in tournaments.

This is consistent with my experience. You can make perfect versions of pikers and
see them roll well and fail. Or you can make less perfect versions of pikers and see
them succeed. 17-12-4-21-7-12-11 doesn't look like anything super special, yet this
TV'd for me.

One thing I will absolutely say. Do not make average numbers into pikers. Making an
average set of numbers into the worst style in the game will normally lead to lots of
losses. 10-10-10-17-17-9-11 types? I have yet to see something like this lead to
success. And even that is above average for numbers.

Do not expect those perfect sets of numbers to succeed. For every success story I can
give 2-3 failure stories.

Weapons: I stick with LO and SC. It is lazy, but these two weapons are great.

Armor: I generally tend to wear armor based on my strength. ALE/L or none for
faster pikers with less con (like my TC). The 17-12-4 guy wore APA/F in his TV
    run.

Strategy: 9-10 or 10-10. Add tactics as desired. Feel free to slow down for
scum, but this is my 'magic' strategy for Pikers. These are the numbers that have
    worked for me.

Learning: Attack is the best favorite learn. More importantly, you want to learn
a LOT of skills. That is what 21 wit is for.

If you do undertake making Pikers, I wish you the best. There are no numbers that
ensure success, but they are definitely an interesting experience and winning with
them is very satisfying, knowing you're winning with the worst style in the game.

Addendum: The Scum Piker

I have run between 6-12 scum pikers. They do NOT do as well as total parry scum.

I haven't gotten one to the Freshman class yet, where they can certainly do things.

But my one success story has a feature that is related to my successes above...

     WIT! 11 wit.
     My design: 15-16-5-11-21-5-11 PS
TV'd rookies and is now graduating at 19-3.
The 3-7 wit versions have all been average at best. I've stopped making them.

You may see more success than I have, but at this point, I'm sticking with 11 wit on
my scum pikers.

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
NOBLISH ISLAND brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. SIMPLY DESSERTS turned their
4-1-0 turn into a 2nd place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this,
and you get put on hit lists. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see SNACK
DUTY win a fight and gain 17 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, FRIDAY beat SALMON and
SALMON lost 15 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of
life, NOBLISH ISLAND may be getting bland, as TUESDAY stays top dog in the city.
Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys
win their fights? Skill? Ha!
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. MY DIET FOOD, I suppose you'll be glad to know you
were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And
it looks like BASH BROS TBALL avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would
be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, HOFFA!!! was this
turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for NOBLISH
ISLAND's morgue. More variety. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what
brave team is developing these kinds of weapons?
What does the NOBLISH ISLAND arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Glad
to see the back of this place-- Snide Clemens

We're supposed to run our team here?!? I thought we were just supposed to send in
strats that said, "SAME." -- Assur
P.S. For those that want to speed up the creation of strategy sheets, you can write
'SAME' over sections of the strategy and it will use the same strategy as you used
last turn.
NOTE: You cannot use this for Challenge/If Challenged Strats. Writing 'SAME' also
uses the last normal strat (so if the prior turn you used a challenge/if challenged
strat, you will revert back to the last submitted front side strategy that you
submitted)
NOTE 2: You can write 'SAME' over your entire weapon section, one or more lines (but
it must be the entire line) of the 1-6+ section), the tactic section (but again, must
be the entire line), the armor/helm section, or the training section.

Make sure you're clear about what you are changing and what stays the same.
It is sometimes necessary to write "--" to blank out a weapon or tactic, so
we are sure of your intent. Also note that challenges, avoids, and any challenge
strategies aren't saved from turn to turn so you cannot 'SAME' them. -- GC Lackey

Mickey Mouse -- You're one tough cookie. I think I broke a tooth. -- Mud Pie

All -- I sincerely appreciate the tips and advice. Thanks for being so generous with
your time and knowledge! -- Simply Desserts
