WHAT THEY WON'T TEACH YOU IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
SO COME TO NOBLISH ISLE TO REALLY, REALLY LEARN
Any warrior, no matter what pronouns it chose, that loses a fight can die. Dead. Gone.
One can die by being mercilessly killed by the opponent, and, sadly, every loser has a
small chance (estimated odds 1 in 50) of dying in the infirmary. Note: There is NO
chance of dying if one wins! So WIN!
Any warrior can use any weapon. Not a problem However, there are undefined (meaning
unknown to us long-time DMers) penalties for using marginal, unsuited, inadequate wit,
inadequate size, inadequate strength, and inadequate deftness weapons. One can
certainly win with an improperly suited weapon, but, is it worth the chance? Usually
not, I say. (I said usually!)
Warriors are born with certain skills which are dependent on the base 70 point stat
sheet and the style selected. The 14 points of added stats also add skills to those
base skills. You really need to know which skills come from what stat. (So check out
that C.I.C. or Terrablood.com or Assur.com.)
RSI seldom makes input errors. I said seldom. The best thing a manager can do to help
avoid input errors is to fill out the strategy sheet accurately and legibly with good
penmanship. Yes, we have doctors in the warrior management ranks (Slugbait and Grimm
of old come to mind as they scribbled unmercifully) and they probably regret their
yucky penmanship.
These are considered the best ways to acquire info, knowledge and "secrets" about D2:
* Assur'e site
* Terrablood.com
* Noblish Island (DM93) newsletters
* Reality.com
There is more to strategy than filling out the warrior's initial armor and weapon
selection and offensive effort and activity level and kill desire and tactic
selection. Challenges and avoids are an important way to attempt to give your warrior
an advantage. Challenge warriors (warrior ID) that your warrior is likely to defeat
and learn a lot from, and avoid teams (team ID) with warriors whom are likely to
defeat you. (Remember, if you lose, you could die!) Indeed, your warrior can be
provided with an alternate strategy for challenging or when being challenged or both.
A warrior does not have to ever challenge, bloodfeud, or avoid, but it is almost
certainly in his best interest to do so.
Ask dumb questions! Often managers, especially new managers, have a doubt or a
question, but they feel "asking for help/advice" is a sign of weakness or lack of
intelligence or knowledge about D2. Do not let this be you! Ask! We dumb veteran
managers ask each other dumb questions all the time. One man's dumb is another man's
smart. (You heard it here first!)
What are the best ways to ask?
* On the Reality.com site
* On the D2 Chatzy blog site
* In personal ads in the arenas (especially Noblish Island)
* By diplo to another manager in D2 (Certain managers will almost always respond;
some may not)
No matter what any veteran, friend or expert tells you about design or strategy or
concept, it is not necessarily the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
It may be good or great or common advice, but it is not necessarily the only good (or
bad) advice. Some advice is best learned first-hand.
D2 is a normally a friendly atmosphere. While managers are very competitive, most of
the vets know each other, see each other at FTF Tournaments, chat with each other on
line, and even help each other out with advice and ideas. The fount of knowledge
available now, about D2, was acquired by a collective "working together" and sharing
info.
Be advised that an overly mean, overbearing, threatening, haughty, unfriendly
character/manager is likely to be colluded against and ostracized by D2 regulars.
Smack talk is desirable and a part of the game. Personal threats, harsh meanness, or
overbearingness is not at all welcomed. You are forewarned!
Noblish Island is a great learning atmosphere. What comes after Noblish? Choose wisely
an arena (or two!) in which to participate.
* Fast (two week turnaround) or slow (four weeks)
* Large (15+ teams participating), medium (8-14ish), small (7 or less)
* Friendly (usually Andorian arenas are up for role-playing and up for helping
newbies, and down on down-challenging or taking advantage of newbies), or
Cutthroat (Darkholm arenas tend to be win-at-all-cost).
You can participate in as many arenas as you want. You can also participate in
separate tournaments, held quarterly, which allow warriors from all arenas to compete
with each other for acclaim and prizes.
There are many other things they apparently didn't teach you, you say? Well send a
personal ad or diplo to Assur or The Consortium rep in DM93 Noblish Isle and give them
a shot at answering in the newsletter.

Basics of Strategy, part 2
Pure Defensive, parry based:
These are the next easiest warrior type to design, master, and create a strategy for.
There is a well known 'catch all' strategy for this type of warrior as well. It is 1
OE, 1 AL, parry tactic. In the hands of the right warrior (typically TP's), it is a
very difficult strategy to beat.
You can play around with numbers and Assur has run parry based defensives from
anywhere from 1-6 OE, and anywhere from 1-6 AL. I'd love to hear the Consortium's
thoughts and musings on how to best optimize these warriors, because he runs more
parry based pure defensives than most. You also don't have to use the parry tactic.
These warriors typically don't need it.
Armor: Usually APA/F or APM/F. Assur rarely goes below ASM/H.
Weapon: Off-Hand shield! Many of these also use main hand shields, but you can also
use a weapon. Sometimes you might even attack with it. Countering the parry based
pure defensive.
Option 1: If you can't beat them, join them. It is always an option to try and
counter with the same strategy. Fights like this can end up going a long time
(typically in the 30 minute range in basic and can extend 100's of minutes in
Advanced). In basic, Assur has had success using a single big weapon and lighter
armor so that when both warriors are so tired they can barely hold their hands up, you
might win by attacking.
Option 2: Slow Down! The pure defensive isn't going to try and attack you, so you can
normally slow down to 1 AL. This conserves your endurance. Then, if you think you
know your favorite OE, use that. Also use the biggest weapon you are well suited to.
If you've found your favorite weapon or a weapon that your warrior crits with, that is
another great option.
Option 3: Aimed Blows... There is nothing an Aimed Blow typically likes more than a
defensive warrior to fight. Their ability to ignore armor makes them able to beat
plate clad warrior better than most. It depends a little on your Aimed Blow, but this
matchup heavily favors the aimed blow, all else equal.
Option 4: Avoid! These guys can be tough to beat, especially for Lungers. There is
no shame in avoiding parry based pure defensives with obscene records. They've beaten
lots of others before you.
SPY REPORT
Much has changed in NOBLISH ISLAND since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf
Modeen adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. What's with BIG
MAC? He actually beat OXY MORONS' SLEEPY JOE, and walked away with 17 more points
from the fight. Major screwup at BB FACE TO FACE. SANDY CALL OUT lost 7 points to
MANNEQUIN. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe SANDY CALL OUT will provide more
easy wins... Our Duelmaster has lost, folks, lost to CONVICTED ASSASSIN, BUT DOC
STEELE is still the Duelmaster because he has the most recognition points! Advice to
fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was IMPERIAL CABAL. The bums at RED LEGION couldn't face the
challenges from IMPERIAL CABAL! No excuse for that! What do people see in VLAD?
His 3-1-0? DM - FOLK ain't talkin', but he's got 20 points. CHONK of RED LEGION
knows how to pick 'em. He challenged BUBBA of DM - FOLK who is up by 19. Now was
this a wise move? CHONK perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was defeated by
BUBBA and ended up with 4 recognition points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Is it my imagination, or are fighters getting
younger every day? To die so young, so gloriously!
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? The
end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Remember--a good
fighter needs both good skills and good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen

Great spot Emperor Calus. Kudos! -- T.C.
I love the names Assur has given his warriors. Having been at the most recent FTF
(Face-To-Face) in Tempe at the same table as the mighty Assur, I appreciate and
chuckle at the names.
... Tombstone Feature -- most table groupings and alliances post (tape to the wall) a
tombstone paper with the dead warrior and the proud KILLER's signature. Often a quip
is added.
... AD Match Up -- a warrior's tourney results often depend on the style random
matches one is given. Sure, warrior quality counts most, but match-ups and luck play a
big factor.
... Hung Over -- there are a few who enjoy more than just the competition and
sometimes they pay the price
... Broke Newsletters, the quickly posted tournament newsletters provide much needed
info for the participants and those watching (on-line) back home. Occasionally, the
newsletter system 'breaks down" disappointing managers until Lee can fix the system
and then all is well. (Yes, it happened at this Tempe FTF.)
... Sandy Call Out -- often times (certainly too many to suit Sandy) a strategy change
and submittal is wrong, incomplete, or illegible, and there is no trouble hearing
Sandy call out that manager's name! The trip to the front table to sandy is an
embarrassment, and the victim gets plenty of boos from the crowd.
Face-To-Faces are the best, and I hope all of you get the opportunity one day to
attend. (The next is in Minneapolis this summer.)
Assur, live with it! Perhaps you will feel better about life once you get out of that
godforsaken western coastal liberal hellhole. -- T.C.
Hung Over -- That fight was back and forth! But the fickle hand of fate cast a shadow
upon you in round two. Better luck next time! -- Arachnol
Valus Thunn -- I jumped, you didn't. Victory was mine! -- Wee Jerry
Broke Newsletters -- I was clearly outmatched, thank you for leaving my internal
organs on the
inside! -- Bone Splitter
Caius Brutus -- Even lacking the strength and deftness to wield your weapon, you still
made me eat sand. Well done! -- Cutter
Braces Zahn -- Chonk not like when crowd ask me to go Dark Arena. Me hope Alcibiades
wasn't among them! -- Chonk
Doc Steele -- All hail the Duelmaster! -- Alcibiades, manager of the Red Legion
Chonk -- Beating you was the easiest thing I have done all week, and I spent the week
in a coma! -- Brachus Zahn
Enrique Suave -- You brought a fist to a knife fight and still reigned victorious!
Honestly, that was embarrassing for my part! Thanks for teaching me a skill while
humbling me! -- Tazaroc
A response to Arachnol diplo:
1. This will reach you faster than a back-and-forth USPS note.
2. Love your cursive (a lost art) but sometimes it is a little hard to read.
3. C.I.C. YES! Ask Lee or Sandy for the "info For New Managers".
4. Good role playing arenas = 29, 33, 36, 81 (a no-tournament arena)
5. Best way to choose an arena = backread the newsletters from the various arenas.
6. Regular participation in arenas is impacted by real life, prepping for tournaments,
laziness, non-full teams or single warrior teams, etc.
7. No need to wait your full 10 turns in 93 to start up in an additional arena.
-- T.C.
What a nightmare! I dreamed my entire team went to the Dark Arena except for me, and
I killed someone! What do you mean it wasn't a dream!?!? -- Sleepy Joe
TC -- No godlings this time. Not paying attention doesn't help at all, either. --
Assur
P. Scipio -- Thanks for the columns! Those champ level NPC's are toughfor youngsters
(some of them are even tough for veteran warriors). -- Assur
