                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

THE FINE ARTS OF WINNING (OR TRYING HARD TO)
                                  AND STAYING ALIVE

Your warriors are seemingly solid and are putting up a good fight, but just can't seem
to win? Perhaps you should consider this list of recommended Consortium actions?

     * Always challenge and avoid. Use the challenge and if-challenged strategies on
your strategy sheet to manipulate fight opponents in your favor.

     * Challenge warriors you have beaten before and styles your warrior has the
advantage with. (E.g. AB challenge TP, TP challenge LU, ST challenge SL, SL
challenge LU, etc.). This is something of a rock/paper/scissors game.

     * Take advantage of blood feuds to enhance challenges. Be brutal! BF all four
times if to your advantage, The cretin killed your teammate after all. (Note:
Consortium teams on Noblish Isle do not blood feud.)

     * Avoid teams who seem to regularly beat you and teams with nearby warriors with
styles which have an advantage over your warrior. Avoid the team that just beat
       you last fight.

     * Make your warrior do what his style does best. (E.g. STs get the jump, LUs
dodge, TPs parry and scum, SLs attack, etc.)

     * Use high CN to your advantage by soaking hits and then later hitting and
       finishing a worn down opponent.

     * Pay attention to where an opponent is aiming his attacks and protect that
       location on subsequent fights.

     * Be bad! "Pick on" warriors with less skill, less experience, or lots of losses.

     * Pay attention to fight history in your arena. Know which are tournament
warriors, sandbaggers, etc. with hidden FE. (Fight experience.) These
tournament warriors are likely highly experienced and highly skilled compared
to your normal arena warrior. Stay clear of them. (Not at all common in DM93,
but more common in all other arenas except no-tournament arenas..)

     * Use tactics appropriately: Decise to help you get the jump, Dodge to help you
avoid being hit, Slash or Bash to hit harder, Parry to focus on parry, Response
       to counter known decise users.

     * Dress to fit your strategy. Naked is faster/quicker, plated is most protected
       and sponges best, but slower.

     * Do not overdress and excessively encumber your warrior. It greatly hampers
ability to carry and endure and even to fight properly.

     * Watch fights carefully to find a favored weapon--one which you crit often with
or which you get lots of extra value hits. Use that weapon and maybe those
       similar to it.

     * Know your opposing manager's styles and methods. Try to fight weaker managers
and avoid those who just seem to win lots.

     * If your warrior is in a difficult spot in the rankings/arena listing, sit him
out. Don't fight if you do not have a good chance to win. (e.g., your 5 FE
warrior has jumped way up in the rankings and is surrounded by much more
experienced warriors, or your scum TP is surrounded by aimed-blows, etc.)

     * Phone a friend. Write with questions. Ask for help or advice. The right,
helpful person is likely to want to help you succeed. Use the personal ads or
Chatzy or the RSI site to discuss thoughts, ideas, or strategies.

     * Try to manipulate your fight so you match with an NPC. (Non-playing-character;
       RSI Stand-In.)

     * Send your warrior to tournaments. It gets hidden FE on his record and ups his
skill/stat level unbeknownst to those paying little attention.

     * Pay attention to fighting in your arena. Know whom is using strategies set on
maintenance and take advantage of it by challenging and adjusting your
       strategies to beat them.

     * Design warriors to win rather than to look godling-like. Sure, skills are
important, but maybe not as important as physicals--especially early on.

     * Take advantage of arena DM93. Read the spotlights. Know your C.I.C. package
info or get info from the Terrablood and Assur sites.

Cheer on your warriors. Stay excited! Yeah!

Emuozcann sat in silence and stared at the small desk. A lone flame was the room's
only light, light that provided Emu a shadow -- his only companion. Amber light danced
and reflected back off dents, scratches, and scars of an aged, fist-sized bronze
medallion; raised letter, JHANS, embossed around teh lower edge. As if waiting for a
comment from Emu, a night sky of stars flashed off of the face on the medallion,
patiently it waited to return it home.

Emu could sare at it no longer.

Three weeks past under the cover of darkness, he had sailed with a heart full of hope,
to reach the mainland, to bring the medallion home. The plan was simple. Find Andor,
head Southwest to a cut through the Daggerspine Mountains allowing them to sing to the
Southeast in search of Khalhums. From there, to Caer, and then South to Jhelum and
finally through the city gates at Jhans, a wayward warrior, a son of Jhans, returning
home. Planning was relentless. Hours of preparation consumed all available time,
establishing contacts and acquiring supplies. All the while concealing the true
nature of The Strain, his Strain. Secrets must still be kept!

The best laid plans...

Several moons into the voyage, off-course and unable to navigate -- no stars and
flacid sails -- ship and crew swaddled in fog so tight, its dampness and chill, a
second skin. An acrid taint, it burned eye and nose alike. Without fanfare, their
voyage ended as the skiff crunched into the sand and shells, and through the dying
ripples of a faltering tide, onto the shores of this acursed isle, this Noblish
Island. Craft secured, Emu and the crew felt the coarse sand bite underfoot as it
clawed at flesh, between toes and sandle it oozed. Although sight was useless,
hearing did not fail. Leaves of the trees up the beach, and clusters of fronds at
their base rythmically dance in the breeze; unbothered and aloof by these stranger's
arrival.

Strange, Emu thought to himself, he had forgotten the breeze until now.

The mind's eye clear, unaffected replayed that night, vivid and fresh. Not realizing
he had closed his eyes tight; there would be no burn tonight. Yes! There was abreeze.
Coolness soothed his face; he knew this to be true, as sure as the roughness of the
wood planks of the desk beneath his hands. There was a breeze, he himself had heard
the leaves swaying, and the fronds answering, but the fog. The fog did not move. The
unbounded cloud, wiht it acrid burn, stayed solid and steadfast -- not in the
slightest bothered by the insignificant ocean breeze. Did the breeze itself even
notice?

"Emu?" Emu's eyes opened at once. He was unaware the Helga had entered his room.

"Yes, Helga?"

"Faida is dead."

"Yes, so I have heard."

"And what of Elin?"

Emu managed only a shake of the head, unable to answer.

"I will do as you ask."

Turning th his left, shifting his weight as the chair creeked in protest, Emu's eyes
met the burning ice blue eyes of Helga.

"Avenge your sister, Helga. And I shall seek out the Strain on this pathetic island
to refill our brood."

Helga turned on her heel, and left Emu alone.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greetings, proud warriors and managers of Noblish Island! It's me, Double-B! I am
proud to represent this Fine Arena and its combatants! May Good Fortune Smile upon you
all!

As you can see from around the Island and on the sands, we warriors of Dragons Blood
are All Draconians (Dragon-men) representing all major types of Dragon Color! Each of
us has been hatched from the egg of a Great Dragon Wyrm that was either bought, stolen
or donated! We are led by the Eldest and most powerful Draconian from our world,
Runefang. Alas, we are Finite in number our entire resources spawned from a total
clutch of 120 eggs!

I don't expect to have this DM throne for long. Next turn the Duelmaster will probably
be whichever warrior Legionarii sends to Bloodfeud me....

So, let's get to it... my Sage advice:

Do you want to be as successful as myself and my teammates? Because I can sum up 90%
of our success in four short words:

Read the spotlights!

You never know what information you may pick up from reading something you think you
already know!

In fact, the Greatest bit of information Runefang has picked up was from an article on
Character Design (I think Lungers) from those Consortium guys! It just casually
mentioned how to run a fighting strategy for Lungers saying all Consortium Lungers
fight on the same strategyb& White Warlock has been fighting on this strategy ever
since and would Still be Duelmaster if he had not made the mistake of aiming for the
Abdomen against a Dwarf wearing a trash can!

So read those team spotlights and Try them!

I would like to comment on last turn's team spotlight about "Staying Alive"! I think
more Managers of Noblish Island need to reread it, especially number "2 -- Wear
Armor"! Last turn the five warriors of Dragons Blood fought Three opponents wearing No
Armor! Our team went 2-1-1 in those fights! My kill came from a 7 Kill Desire and
aiming for Left Arm my final blow was to strike an unarmored Head! I truly believe my
opponent would be walking around today if he had only worn a Leather Cap--or Beanie--
or anything!

May you feast upon the corpses of your enemies! (an old Draconian Proverb)

                                          -- Blue Barbarian

                                      SPY REPORT

Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for NOBLISH ISLAND. Cut this out and put it
in your scrapbooks, HOGWARTS VILLAINS! 'Cause they got 4-1-0 and moved up to 3rd!
MVP award for DECIMUS PUGIO? LEGIONARII's proud of him after beating RED ROGUE and
getting 21 points. Talk about yer big time losers! BRASS MONK got smashed by
WEATHER DELAY, and lost 16 points! Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair?
I think BLUE BARBARIAN should let KUNG-FU MASTER be Duelmaster for a while, without
fighting about it. Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates?
Don't ask me!
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. BB CONSTRUCTION was NOBLISH ISLAND's most avoided team. Is there
some award for that? I don't know what HOGWARTS VILLAINS' been doing. They
certainly haven't been accepting many fights from BB CONSTRUCTION, that's fer sher.
Can DRAGON BLOOD's RED ROGUE be more popular than me? He was challenged the most,
but is that really the same? GREYBACK must not be a good enough fighter to get in
fair fights. He challenged QUINTUS TURRIS. 8 is a big difference. (Well, that's
what they tell me.) I thought GREYBACK showed great skill and promise when he bested
QUINTUS TURRIS. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Like was that some Bloodfeud, or what? (HELGA vs. HERBIE HANBARK, that
is.) What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's
what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

All -- Just a note to add another side to Assur's superb "Staying Alive" spotlight
last round. There is at least one positive to a warrior dying. Yes, there is! You will
receive a recruit, a new warrior roll-up. One of my most enjoyable things in D2 is the
thrill /anticipation of receiving a new warrior to design. Will it be a godling RU?
probably not, but........ design is fun. Good luck in winning (staying alive) and also
in getting wonderful new roll-ups. (if death occurs) -- The Consortium

that you are struggling a bit at Wins and I just wanted to say, Don't Give Up! You Can
and Will turn things around--and the Victories will be so much Sweeter! Best of Luck
to you and keep Challenging if you wish! I will send you a Diplomatic Note with my

All -- My Dragons Blood team has some potential but they have been WAYYY-
overachieving! Furthermore, our recent successes have shown a spotlight on us and the
Hunters are coming. We don't expect to do as well This turn but you never know... --

Question for the Article Writing Duel Sages in here. I am not quite an Initiate level
manager but more like an Adept level, so I have character design down pretty good but
what I really need is advice on fighting strategies--this seems like the hardest info
to come by in the game in that most "Mega Managers" are somewhat tight-lipped about
the strategies they use. How about some articles on Fighting Strategies? In particular
for me, I am running about a dozen Slashers in different Arenas and only have two of
them in AD so I don't know much about them. I would Love some tips on fight strategy
Including some sort of Desperate or Defensive strategy for them. It's difficult to
figure out since they are Not Well-suited to Any Defense Tactics. Could you help me?
