An Introduction to the Parry-Strike style
                                      by Obregon

The allure of the Parry-Strike (PS, or "Piker" for short) is a White Whale for many
managers, and this article is an attempt to help newer players get to the meat of this
confounding yet tantalizing style. It is a lovely, flexible, maddening, and
perplexing style to say the least, but rewarding when you find success with it.

The downsides to Pikers: low skill base. Weird learning. A sometimes-unclear path to
victory. The risk of designing a Piker that then learns very differently than what
thought you had designed. For instance, you can roll a defensive piker that learns a
ton of initiative and decise. Also: when they are bad, they are very bad.

The upsides: super flexible strategic options. Can be bonused in everything! Great
weapons selection and low endurance burn! No one knows what to expect from you! They
run best as hybrids with specific tactical flexibility against given opponents. No
other style matches Piker flexibility!

PSs tend to learn Parry and Decisiveness. Many also learn Attack and other skills.
The best pikers have two or more ways to win.

A safe bet is to focus on stats that help Parry, which are ST, WL, and DF. These stats
also help with your Attack and other elements. It's also worthwhile to have a decent
CN, unless you are running a purely offensive PS. You also want a very high WT if
possible to improve your skill learning, to overcome the low starting skill base. It
is also true that Pikers get more from SP than possibly any other defensive / hybrid
styles. Just be aware that if you make a high WT/SP piker, you will almost certainly
have a bad starting parry skill and run the risk of developing a one-dimensional
warrior.

ST: 9+ you want normal+ damage. Ideally, also normal+ carry. I try to get an 11
here if possible and greatly prefer a 15+ ST when I can get it.
CN: 9+ you want normal+ HP if possible. I've had more success at 11+ CN.
SZ: 3-12 not too big. The smaller you are, the higher your ST and CN need to be. I
would not go higher than 14 SZ in any event.
WT: 13+ stupider Pikers also work; the dumber your PS, the better physicals need to
be. Dumb PSs are essentially scum in piker's clothing.
WL: 7+ more is better obviously. But there are only so many points to go around
and you can get away with less. But if I can get a 15+ WL I will take it in
most instances. Low WL pikers can die at a moment's notice.
SP: 3-14 I don't hate SP, but you'd rather have a higher ST, CN, WT, WL, or DF than a
          high SP.
DF: 11+ you need the skills and weapon suitability that a decent DF provides.

Piker priority stats are WT, ST, and DF -- and WL, if you can get it. ST and CN also
pair well together, even with a low WL. High WT, low WL rollups can often be made
into workable arena Pikers. If your arena is inundated with Strikers, Bashers, and
TPs, consider throwing a PS into the mix.

Here are some examples of Tournament Victor PSs I've run: 11-12-5-21-10-10-15 (Apps
TV); 9-13-11-17-9-14-11 (rooks TV); 17-11-4-21-7-9-15 (rooks TV), 17-12-3-21-11-9-11
(rooks TV). With one exception, they all had 21 WT. I would love to have a high WL
version of these, but of those I've attempted, none have done as well in tourneys as
these (either because of lower physicals or lower WT). I have no explanation for the
success of the second warrior on this list other than "good" damage, a decise favorite
learn, knack and lucky matchups. He ended up graduating with a 70% winning record and
confused everyone in his arena, which I define as a success! The latter two warriors
listed above are a personal favorite winning archetype but those rollups (high ST/WT,
low SZ) are relatively uncommon.

For arena pikers, you can have good success with high physicals and WT and a decent
DF, with a moderate WL. They key is to mold your strategy to your piker's
overview/bonuses and learns, and try to accentuate his strengths. This warrior had a
70% winning record in the arena and was a ton of fun: 15-13-13-17-9-4-13. If you
can't get a 21 WT I would zero in on physicals or a high DF. But if you can manage a
21 WT I would go for it every time and see how he learns.

Strategies and Tactics:

If your warrior is physical and/or learns a lot of parry, put him in the heaviest
armor he can manage and give him a shield and run him with moderate to low numbers and
try the parry tactic in min 1 or desperation. They will still attack (eventually!)
even with LOW or VLO Offensive Effort. Stay away from aimers!

If your warrior is fast and/or learns a lot of decise or riposte, try running him
lighter and hotter (moderate to high numbers) and use decise and/or response tactics
to take advantage of his quickness. Depending on your learning you can target slower
offensive warriors with some success here. Having a good attack and damage is going
to be necessary to get wins even if you have the quickness edge. Use slashing weapons
(SC, BA, BS) to enhance your crit damage and fight-ending potential.

Use your challenges and avoids and switching up your approach to keep your opponents
guessing. Sometimes you can catch a lazy offensive warrior challenging you and your
"if challenged" decisiveness takes him out before he even gets started. Conversely,
some one-trick-pony warriors (scum, decisiveness Strikers and Bashers) can be overcome
with thoughtful challenge strats.

Lastly, try responsiveness both liberally and situationally. It is an odd duck tactic
and you need to run it to get a feel for it. It works great against decise-users (ST,
BA, PS, some others) and as a generic defensive tactic. It can also fail
spectacularly. Most opposing managers don't plan for its use except in face-to-face
tourneys and in specific arena matchups.

Weapons:

Pikers can use all the great weapons well-suited. If you have the stats for them, try
the SC, LO, BS, BA, QS, and SS in the right situations. The WH and SH are also
underrated piker weapons. All of them work great in the right situation and can get
you wins. Don't be shy about using a shield against offensives. You need all the
help you can get!

You would also be surprised how long a PS with a BA and good+ damage can pound away on
a scum and win. Don't sleep on their low endurance burn!

When to Move on:

I have DA'd more Pikers than any other style. If your piker doesn't learn Attack, or
can't win defensively (using Parry and/or physicals), you are going to have a hard
time winning in Adepts and above when the quality offensive warriors all start having
advanced expert attack ratings. This more than anything is the biggest argument for a
high WT, so you can learn your way into a winning approach. Many pikers (like other
defensive styles) sort of flip a switch mid-career and suddenly act like fighting gods
when they pass certain skill thresholds. If your piker is holding his own and
learning, keep going!

Helga rocked back in her chair, balancing on the reat leg, running a honing cloth
along the broad width of her trusty sword. Staring forward, intently, and yet, not
seeing what wasw unfolding in front of her. Emu, sitting at his desk reviewing recent
arena newsletters. Steaming tea sat untouched to his right. To his left Anna was
standing, ridid, tense, apprehensive, hands clenched before her.

Courage found in her wringing palms.

"Emu, the issue is this island." Anna's though clutched in her throat, forcing the
search for the right words. "The 'materials' here -- the materials that are," pausing
again, "are not of a quality that we are accustomed to having available for our..."
Anna glanced over toward Helga, pleading silently for help. She could swear that even
in the dim light, over distance -- she could see Helga's pupils dilate, snap focus,
and return an icy gaze.

"...for our recipes Emu. We are getting unwanted results. Gudrun and Hildur have
completed their final augmentation cycle Emu, and they are... they are not what wasw
intended. They will no be successful. Ihave double-checked all the ratios, I have
double-checked the settings, our equipment is fine. It isn't the equi..." A loud
crash caught anna by surprise, whirling her to the left, she faced Helga.

Helga's chair slammed down on th all four legs. Continuing in one fuid motion as if
she was part of a wave pouring off the set of the chair, Helga rolled forward onto her
feet, sword in hand, walking toward the door.

"Where?"

"Anna, where are they?"

Anna simply gawked at Helga.

Impatient, Helga made for the door in a single bound. "No matter Emu, I will find
them and despatch them myself."

The door slammed shut behind her.

Tears welled in Anna's eyes, running down both cheeks, lower lip quivering.

Two single teras splashed on the wooden floor.

Emu continued to study his newsletter...

                               ASSUR'S GUIDE TO KILLING

Part of arena fighting is the fact that warriors will die. Last time I told you
how to optimize your chances to keep your own warriors alive. This time I give you
the 'best practices' if you want to KILL your opponent. It should be obvious that
winning fights is a requirement to kill. Some of the suggestions do not help your
warrior win. But when you do win, I believe the list below are things that will help
you get more kills (listed in the order that I believe makes a difference).

One interesting stat is kill %. Note that I use a kill % that is kills/wins.
Some people prefer kills/fights, but since you can't kill if you don't win, losses are
irrelevant to killing. In the same way, deaths/losses would measure mortality. I can
say with certainty that a manager who runs a 10% kill ratio over a lot of fights is
trying to kill his opponents. In the one arena where I try to kill, I have been able
to keep my kill % just over 10% (without a lot of augmentation from killing in the
Dark Arena). At the time of this writing, my other arenas have a 3.95% kill ratio
(which includes sending most of my lord protectors to the DA when they graduate). In
that one arena, I don't run scum and all my warriors run 10 kill desire in every
minute and desperation. They also aim for HE, CH, or AB every minute. Contrast that
where I will run scum and every warrior uses 5 (usually) or less kill desire in every
minute and always attacks limbs. These numbers (and similar in other teams/managers)
are what makes me conclude that 5% is on the low side while 10% is on the high side.
Why do I share all this? Because even if you do try and want to kill, don't 'expect'
to kill more than about 10%. It might be possible to sacrifice winning and design for
killing to increase the expected number above 10%, but this is not something I can
speak to.

     1) Aim for HE, AB, or CH. There is nothing that will increase your kills more
than aiming for the areas that are the most important areas of the body. Arms and
Legs are for not killing. Head, Abdomen and Chest are for killing.
     2) Use High KD! High KD tells the arenamaster you want the fight to keep going
longer. He is less likely to end the fight early if one or both warriors are using a
high kill desire. I recommend 8+. (Note that 9 and 10 KD have clear adverse effects
on the overall fighting ability of your warriors, but they will get you more kill
intent messages).
     3) Good or Great damage. Over the years, it has become very evident that killing
with good or great damage is far easier than killing with little, normal, or
tremendous damage. Tremendous damage warriors make opponents give up faster. Little
and Normal damage warriors can't do the kind of damage that causes wounds that kill. I
do not have enough experience to say anything about higher damage ratings than
Tremendous. I suspect they are more like tremendous damage, but I'm not sure.
     4) Some warriors appear to have a higher blood lust than others. Nobody can
prove this for sure, but you see some warriors go after the kill much more often than
others. This works both ways. You'll have warriors that kill more often than other
warriors (and try to kill more often). I also believe that this same stat makes
warriors more vulnerable to dieing. If true, these warriors are easier to kill.
     5) Use higher damage weapons. The easiest way to judge weapon damage is to look
at the weapon weights. Weapons that do slash or piercing damage are better than
bashing weapons. Be careful, though, of selecting a high damage weapon that is really
slow (HL comes immediately to mind).
     6) Look for warriors that don't wear any armor.
     7) Young fighters die much more often than experienced fighters. The number of
deaths in the first 5 fights is much greater than warriors in the Champion and
Challenger Champion classes.
     8) Challenge warriors with fewer fights than you.

Realize that killing requires a bit of luck, but these things can help you have a
high kill percentage. Anything over 10% (Kills/Wins) is a fairly high kill
percentage.
Finally, realize that most managers want to keep their warriors alive. By trying
to kill someone's warriors, you may be taking away from their enjoyment of the game.
I'm not saying you should not try to kill, but realize what you are doing. We all
know death is part of Duel2. But some managers like it less than others.

                                      SPY REPORT

I can't believe the violence in NOBLISH ISLAND! I still haven't told Mom I'm
writing Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... VAMPIRE POSSUMS like
really fought hard to move up to 5th from 8th. Way to go! MVP award for FURIUS
PACILUS? LEGIONARII's proud of him after beating MISTAKES and getting 16 points.
Talk about yer big time losers! BIRTA got smashed by RED ROGUE, and lost 7 points!
This Duelmaster is like something else! BLUE BARBARIAN stopped KHALHUMS DWARF dead
in his tracks! Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't
ask me!
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. The warriors of HOGWARTS VILLAINS must be getting lonely. They
were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? I don't know
what BB CONSTRUCTION's been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights
from HOGWARTS VILLAINS, that's fer sher. Like, is DECIMUS PUGIO popular, or what?
He was challenged the most in all of NOBLISH ISLAND! He's got a 4-4-0, is that good?
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? What a bummer deal for HELGA! She just barely was getting hers "fighter
feet" but got kill by WHITE WARLOCK of DRAGON BLOOD! Those're the breaks, I guess.
What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really
should stop. Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

Thoughts on Slasher strategies:
a. Terrblood implies that the most common favorite rhythm is High/Very High

c. is 10/10/x the way to go; quite common, I suspect.
d. some believe in "scummy slashers"
e. such as APA/F taking hits then attacking maybe starting 6/8/6
f. can response work; some believe
g. meaning 8/10/x response start
h. or even 8/10/x in desperation
i. is a slasher a side-to-side striker, but a bit less decisive?
