TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Down three steep flights of stone sairs, underneath the main gladiatorial arena on
will find a single small basement. Poorly lit, reeking of ammonia and chemicals,
torches holding sentry along three of the walls, the last wall adorned with six
cabinet doors set into the wall, all forming a single horizontal line. Sitting on the
floor in front of each door sat a long mahogany table waiting in silence, tilting
toward the rear wall. The table's surface so finely polished, you felt as if you were
seeing the insides of some strange animal through its translucent skin.
Each tabletop bore a shallow scaloped center, as if someone had started to carve out a
tree trunk for a dugout canoe and gave up the notion quickly. The tables bore no
straps, no belts, none would be needed. These tables only would hold one in one's
final rest. Whoever found their way here -- and all of us will at some point -- there
would be no protest, no attempt to leave. Deep gutters were carved down both long
sides of each table, ready to collect, separate, and ingurgitate all manner of fluids
and flesh, and all materials that could be recollected. And reused. And
redistributed. Some mixed. Some wasted.
Life itself did not rest here, only death. Such was the lot of the morgue on Noblish
Isle.
Death had found its way in tonight. Yet, tonight there was some life present.
Emu and Birta stood silently.
Gudrun and Hildur both were destined, their formulations wrong. Off. Wasted. Birta
knew before the calescence had completed that there would be issues. Both would need
to be destroyed and reprocessed back into future attempts at formulations. It is rare
that a formulation mixes well enough to cause excitement, to deliver hope.
Yet tonight, Helga also claimed her table. A final lucky blow ending everything in a
split second.
"Helga's formulation, Emu. I don't understand," stated Birta.
Staring and watching his lost warrior, Emu was sure his intensity would be enough to
will Helga to open her eyes.
He gave up, closed his eyes. This Isle made Emu's skin crawl. Damn the gods for
landing him on the accursed Isle. He knew his chances of ever reaching the walls of
Jhans were slowly slipping away. Why had he been cursed, forced to this gull-scat of
an isle. He could only wonder.
The medallion held proof of his destiny, it was his life-compass, finally revealing to
him -- after all these years -- which way home was. And now. Those directions were
now fading away, growing murkier. Unless he is able to work out the permutations and
find the correct formulations necessary -- the ones needed to lift him off this speck
of land and finally get him to Jhans -- this would all be a failure.
With them, without them, or in spite of them, he would get there. That he promised
himself. He had a destiny. His and his alone.
"Where is Anna?" asked Emu.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Double-B is Back!!!
I just wanted to say, I got to use a Great Axe in my last fight as I needed a can-
opener! Niiice! All of those Flat Bladed Chops and Dangerous Slices made short work of
my opponent! You guys gotta get you one of these! They even work for short, stubby
guys!
"Why are you Still here?" you may be asking yourself? Well, once again, that is a
short, easy answer...
"Read the Team Spotlights!"
Do you remember the article about Advantageous Challenging and increasing your chance
to Win? It mentions using your Avoids Intelligently.
Well, I would like to expand on that.
If you are Duelmaster and all Challengers are from the same team, Avoiding That Team
increases your chances of getting matched against a somewhat easier Computer Opponent.
Some might call it cowardly, others may call it an Intelligent Tactic--you decide. But
I have fought two Computer Opponents in a row, and I'm Still Here!
May you Feast upon the Corpses of your Enemies!!
-- Blue Barbarian
SPY REPORT
I can't believe the violence in NOBLISH ISLAND! I still haven't told Mom I'm
writing Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... Our Duelmaster has lost,
folks, lost to VENEMOUS CONCUBINE, BUT BLUE BARBARIAN is still the Duelmaster because
he has the most recognition points! Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to
his teammates? Don't ask me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? The warriors of HOGWARTS VILLAINS
must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something
that I don't? Is there some deep dark secret why BB CONSTRUCTION's been avoiding
HOGWARTS VILLAINS so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Can BB
CONSTRUCTION's WEATHER DELAY be more popular than me? He was challenged the most,
but is that really the same? For sure, I was holding my breath when I found out RED
ROGUE challenged NO SHOW. After all, haven't DRAGON BLOOD and BB CONSTRUCTION had a
long standing duel in NOBLISH ISLAND? It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything,
but NO SHOW wants me to write about it since he was defeated by RED ROGUE.
Satisfied? BRASS MONK must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights. He
challenged UMBRIDGE. 12 is a big difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I
thought BRASS MONK showed great skill and promise when he overcame UMBRIDGE. All
right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Hey you guys, don't you think your
families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. I had a fun
time, see you later-- Debby Tonte
