Shania sat in the bow, wrapped in her cloak, staring out to sea, and ignoring everybody. The rest of the group, Ashon Chang, Werre, Rughal, Vurand, and Jammies, went about the business of getting the boat ready to sail. When the tide turned and started outward just before sunset, the boat went with it. Werre, Rughal, and Jammies handled the actual sailing, two on and the third resting in rotation. Werre had sailed before, Rughal had some knowledge of boats, and Jammies was a fast learner. It would turn out to be an exhausting schedule, which they all realized, but Vurand was worse than useless on a boat, Shania didn't have the strength to help, and Ashon Chang's job was to keep a close and constant watch on Herlas. The sun set before they were out of sight of the coast, coloring the sea before them like blood. "A bad omen," Vurand muttered, staring westward past Shania's motionless form. Ashon Chang hesitated, looking away from Herlas to the red sea beyond. One could not deny the reality of omens, but.... "Our journey will be what we make of it, my friend." "And we're nearing the end of it," Jammies added, coming up behind the two. "Praise Mantor for that!" "Geographically, we may be coming to the end," Ashon Chang corrected him, "but in terms of actions to be taken and problems to be solved, I suspect we aren't even half-way." "I didn't want to hear that," Jammies told him. He shrugged. "I know you're right, but can't you let me keep an illusion or two for another few days?" The last burning rim of the sun disappeared under the horizon, and night unrolled from the east. The speed with which darkness fell was unnerving. "The moon'll be up in a couple of hours," Vurand muttered uneasily. "I'm not afraid of the dark." He sounded unsure of that, and yet all the party knew that it was true. The Orc had moved through the darkness of the mountains and forests without hesitation. But there was something about this night.... Ashon Chang glanced back at Herlas, but the Fratsfan merely shifted his position a little and continued to stare into the distance. At the bow, Shania was invisible. "Lady Silverstar should go into the cabin and sleep," he said suddenly. Saying her name focused his vague alarm, and he stared forward, trying to pierce the darkness. "I'll remind her," Vurand agreed. He braced himself on the side of the cabin against the movement of the deck and edged forward. A horse was easier to ride. Hell, if a horse made trouble, started pitching, you could get off and walk. "Shania, you need to.... Shania? Shania! Rughal, Ashon, she's not here! Shania's gone!" "She...she just went into the cabin when it got dark, and we didn't notice," Jammies said quickly. He scrambled down into the low doorway to check. Ashon Chang moved in a different direction; the samurai had his own suspicions, and he'd been against including Herlas in their party once the man had confessed. The Fratsfan mage hadn't moved except to stand up and stare forward. The gladiator saw his face pale as pearl in the darkness. He grabbed Herlas' shoulder. "Where is she?" "I don't know--" "TELL ME, damn you!" He shook the mage hard. "I. Don't. Know," Herlas repeated. "I've been under your eye the whole time-- yours or one of the others. What could I have done, how could I have spirited her away--" "Magic." "Not in the current state of the Arcanum," Herlas snarled. "My powers are not so great that I can draw from Outside sources. And would I do something to Shania and stay here to receive your vengeance? I'm not such a fool!" "Very nearly, though," Rughal said grimly. He grabbed Herlas' other shoulder. "You may not have taken her away, but you can make a guess as to who did, how, why... and where. If you want to see the sun rise again--" "The triumph of brawn over brain?" Herlas sneered. Then he let out his breath in a sigh. "I can make guesses," he admitted, "but they won't do you any good. If she was taken as I think, none of you could get near her." He sighed again. "I do not wish Shania Silverstar ill, but some things are too important for personal considerations--the restoration of the Arcanum is one of them. Shania understood that herself. It is her goal. She's dying, as you know whether you admit it or not. What better use for her life than to--" Rughal's free hand closed around the magician's throat, choking off any further words. "Don't kill him yet, Rughal," Ashon Chang said grimly. "First let him tell us his 'guesses' on what has happened to Lady Shania. Then I'll help you kill him." One hand ran along the sheathed curve of his sword. Rughal relaxed his grip a little. Herlas sucked in air. "Start with who took her," the ranger said. "I don't know names," Herlas gasped. "A coalition of wizards and priests--" "Think of some names," the samurai growled. His dagger gleamed silver in the starlight as he brought it up to prick the Fratsfan's cheek just below his eye. "I don't know names! Just...Murluvir, the one who came to see me in Zensu. He isn't the principal, just an agent, as I was to be--" "Don't lie," Rughal said. His voice was cold and smooth as ice. Or steel. "As you WERE an agent. For whom?" "I don't know! I didn't ask. Some things it's better not to know...." "Guess," Ashon Chang ordered implacably. "I don't know!" Herlas panted, perhaps gathering strength for more denials. But he finally said, "I suspect...Folstrom. Or someone like them. Someone who can draw on power from Outside." "So that's who...for now. Tell us why," Rughal demanded. Before the Fratsfan could answer, he added, "And don't tell us it's another thing you don't know!" "But I don't!" he wailed. "All I can do is guess--" "So guess." Ashon Chang leaned closer. "But guess right." "Maybe...because she's from Outside, too. Or because she's a seer. Because she knows things that other people don't understand how to know. Or because she's linked to the Ghean Arcanum even though she's an Outsider. Some of those reasons, all of them, none of them. I swear I don't know!" "And how was it done?" Ashon Chang asked. "We assume magic of some kind-- nothing else would make sense. But under current circumstances--" "They have no fear, no discretion, no patience!" Herlas' exasperation seemed genuine. "It must have been some kind of small Gate, but to open one NOW...the risks...." "And the last question," Rughal said in a soft voice that sounded no less dangerous for its softness. "Where have they taken her?" There was a long silence. "You don't know," Ashon Chang said. His grip on the man's shoulder tightened; he could feel bones grinding against each other under his fingers. "Guess." "To the Eye of the West. Wherever it is." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Tides of Magic #6 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + The Isle of the Eye, Talahya: "Okay, then, we know where we are," Scarlatti said. "But what do we DO now?" "It would probably help to know what went wrong," Rogan suggested. They had all returned to the park, making grateful use of Rogan's ability to find his way without visual cues. "Why should the Isle of the Eye be cut off from the rest of Ghea?" "That, at least, is easy to answer." Fizban wrapped his cloak more tightly around himself. A clammy fog was not kind to old bones. "It's an effect of the decay of the Arcanum." "But you said the power levels were rising!" Scarlatti protested. The old wizard nodded. "Because the Isle is no longer connected to Ghea, it is no longer being drained of its power by the Ghean decline." He hesitated. "The coupling of the Isle to Alastari and Ghea is, or was, more magical than physical." "What? That's nonsense!" Scarlatti shook his head as if to shake out the bizarre notion. "The Isle is ON Ghea, it's part of Ghea--" "Well, actually, it isn't," Fizban said. "Have you ever looked at a map of Alastari? Unless the drawing is totally out of balance, it shows the Isle as perhaps two miles long--" Even Rogan looked startled at that. "But it isn't--!" "Correct, the Isle is much larger...because it is not really on Ghea, not entirely." He paused. "I have sometimes wondered whether the Isle might actually be in a pocket universe of its own." "You can see the shore from--" Scarlatti began. "From the ferries," Moonjumper finished. "I'd never thought about it before, but for one apparent reason or another--mist, haze, whatever--I have never been able to see the shore from the Isle itself." "Exactly. The links between the Isle and Ghea are primarily magical," the wizard repeated. "And with the decay of the Arcanum, those links have also decayed. There's still some tenuous connection, but...." He shivered from more than the cold. "How long till even those links erode?" "What about new Gates opening, though?" Scarlatti wanted to know. "If there's more power around...." Fizban shrugged. "I don't know. I suppose the shifting of power balances have had many effects; that might be one." Before the others could respond, Rogan turned sharply, his epee glittering silver in the fog-dimmed light. "Who goes there?" "Carris Fallstar, from Andorak, and I'm not looking for trouble." He sounded testy. "Not that anyone would have to LOOK to find trouble today." The Isle of the Eye, Lirin Kiv: "I really don't like this fog," Clemenda muttered, peering out of the hire- carriage window uneasily. "We could be lost and never know it...." "I'd know," Shylock assured her. No point in telling her that they were lost already, unless the driver knew where they were. Weren't cab drivers always supposed to know where they were? It was some kind of union rule; he'd read about it somewhere. Besides, the White Rose was in Talahya, and surely they wouldn't get lost on the road that ran from Lirin Kiv to Talahya? Maybe after they got to the city, but not until then. It wasn't like there were any roads branching off this one. It simply ran along the edge of the island from Willow Beach and Darkholm at the south end to Talahya at the north end, with Lirin Kiv half way up the west side. The carriage jolted as though the pavement (big stone blocks, who knew how they'd been moved and placed?) had suddenly ended. It stopped, and after a moment, there was a creaking shift as the driver climbed down. Shylock glimpsed his lantern moving through the fog, going ahead past the horses, coming back. The face that appeared at the window was white, eyes round with disbelief. "The road is lost," the driver said hoarsely. Shylock frowned at him. "You mean YOU are lost--" "No! I swear, I was following the road right along, and then it...it just wasn't there anymore!" Shylock looked hard at the driver and decided the man wasn't lying. He might be mistaken, but he believed what he was saying. And if he wasn't mistaken.... Well, better to find out for himself, the gladiator decided. He unlatched the door and stepped down from the carriage. "Wait here," he said over his shoulder to Clemenda. "Not hardly!" She climbed down after him. The driver held up his lantern, swinging it from side to side, which set shadows swooping wildly. Shylock took the lantern away from him and held it steady. It was true. A pace behind the rear wheels of the carriage were the flat stones of the roadway. Under the wheels and ahead was rocky dirt and tangled grasses and no sign that there'd ever been a road. THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM Reflections by the Captain of the Guard Greetings and Farewell, Home Guard! First, I would like to thank Nemesis for the opportunity to fight this last turn. I hope we can meet again in Gateway some day. Speaking of which, I am out of here. I won't even get a chance to defend the Captain title this cycle. So, good luck to whoever gets the title. I can say I had a fun time in the arena, actually. Perhaps DMobster will send more warriors here in the future. Until then, my best wishes. Explicit REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER The Unknown Spymaster showed up, saying he was going to do the spy report, and I told him I didn't know anybody by that name. Confused the heck out of him, which is good. We need more confusion around here. Not that confusion was in short supply. We had a couple of plumbers here today. And the only thing more confusing than one plumber is two. Especially at this season, when the plumb trees haven't even bloomed yet, much less done their fruit thing. But it has now been CONFIRMED, it takes two plumbers to change a washer. In more other news, as they say, the Split has been amongst us, as you can see by the thinning of the ranks, the small number of challenges that went through (you WERE all issuing challenges, weren't you?), and the general state of confusion here and elsewhere on the Isle, always a temperate bed of confusion anyway. Royal Flush has been avoided by Cold Steel, which probably makes them (the Flushers) feel good, but is disappointing to the Infirmary staff. The sweet Baboo got more challenges than anybody, which probably means two. Hmm, let's see what else we've got here... seven challenges out of thirty-six matches, but at least only one Standby had to fight. Standbys get paid out of the general arena take, which reduces the cut for the rest of us. Looks like eight minutes was the longest fight, and that was long enough. I wanted to get through this stuff as fast as possible, so as to go fishing. Yeahyeahyeah, I know, I don't like to eat fish. Who said I was going to CATCH any fish, huh? Amongst the thirty-six fights, you had the fans in a tizz, with eight action-packed matches, seven exciting, two brutal, two crowd-pleasing, five gory, four gruesome.... Just a thrill an hour it was. Nobody died, you guys getting soft? The fans like to see the occasional death, more gore and brutality, etc. Life is hard, death is sharp, but then you get resurrected. OSIRIS (19-4111) (21-16-1,60) of ANARCHY fought LETHE (9-4782) (20-12-2,43) of BLUE MOON. OSIRIS overpowered LETHE in a 1 minute one-sided duel. This makes Lethe our bottom-ranked active warrior, not necessarily an honor, but you gotta take your distinctions where you find 'em. LUNA TYCK (33-5761) (26-23-1,84) of DRAKE'S PETTING ZOO fought STARBUCK (6-5387) (18-12-0,68) of SCIENCE FICTION. LUNA TYCK was viciously subdued by STARBUCK in an action packed 2 minute gory match. It was probably the caffeine. Tycks aren't up for that much caffeine. MOD COD (55-2638) (35-64-1,66) of RHYME TYME fought SOUL SCOURGE (25-1223) (15- 6-2,74) of THE ILLUMINATI. MOD COD overpowered SOUL SCOURGE in a 1 minute one-sided match. Cods have souls? That's even worse that Ducks having souls, because Ducks are at least warm-blooded. Usually. SKI MASK (58-5869) (23-42-0,54) of CIRQUE DU MASQUES fought ROT TEN EGGS (47- 3099) (25-28-0,72) of ROYAL FLUSH. SKI MASK bested ROT TEN EGGS in a 2 minute gruesome bout. Is this Ski's first win here? If so, he should buy Rot a drink to celebrate the novelty of it. GREASESPOT (60-5964) (18-26-0,75) of BUMS 'R' US fought HAPPY JACK (19-4086) (28-21-2,70) of THE MOTHERSHIP. GREASESPOT was bested by HAPPY JACK in an exciting 2 minute battle. Which made Jack happier (is it Happy Hour yet?), and left the maintenance crew trying to figure out what to do about that greasy spot on the arena floor. KATANA (62-3769) (7-6-0,69) of SAMURAI KIDS II fought MEAN SPIRIT (101-5) (0-0- 0,70) of Local Louts. KATANA was handily defeated by MEAN SPIRIT in a 1 minute mismatched match. Our only Standby match, and the said Standby won! This has caused a wild party of rejoicing out behind the arena (the Standbys can't afford parties in bars). (Or maybe they just like the feeling of stolen pleasures that they get from hiding behind the barn, er, the arena.) CARRIE NATION (64-4054) (27-59-0,51) of REFORMERS fought MEN IN BLACK (49-3157) (36-87-1,53) of RPG'S. CARRIE NATION was beaten by MEN IN BLACK in a popular 4 minute bout. Men was totally sloshed out there--some things you can tell even from a distance--and Carrie couldn't lay a blade on him. I bet she goes up on flames over this. NED THE JANITOR (66-2973) (16-18-0,65) of ANDORIAN UNIVERSITY fought DI LUCA (11-4770) (25-10-5,85) of GIRO PELETON. NED THE JANITOR was subdued by DI LUCA in a 2 minute gory fight. Unfortunately, Di followed up this victory with a celebratory bout of littering, which annoyed the maintenance crew considerably. MIDNIGHT FAITH (75-2651) (16-10-1,80) of PARANOID ASYLUM fought JUGGLER (2-4965) (19-7-0,62) of HARLEQUINS. MIDNIGHT FAITH viciously subdued JUGGLER in a popular 3 minute brutal fray. Well, darn. The word was that this Juggler guy puts on a really good show--you know, daggers, eggs, oranges all kinds of stuff in the air while he wins fights; I was looking forward to that. Must've been a fluke here. MIME (2-4966) (17-8-2,95) of HARLEQUINS fought NEVERMORE (1-5260) (14-15-2,59) of LAB EXPERIMENTS. MIME was defeated by NEVERMORE in a 2 minute fight. Wow, that was an upset! And who is most upset by it is our top bookie, Carlos. Watch out for him, as he will probably be mad enough to bite people, and I don't think he's had his shots. TICKLES (9-3486) (32-46-1,123) of MY PETS fought HOT HAZEL (98-608) (13-17- 4,144) of JUNKYARD WARS. TICKLES was overpowered by HOT HAZEL in an exciting 1 minute uneven competition. Looks like no one can compete with Hazel when it comes to tickling. She's hot. COM DOT (65-6217) (29-18-0,140) of TOO GOOD FOR ME fought WAHOO (26-3916) (20- 12-1,91) of HERE TO PHOENIX. COM DOT was beaten by WAHOO in a 2 minute fray. But the real question is, can Com Dot beat Yahoo? That is a tougher battle, and one more worth fighting. TANNIN (65-4409) (33-23-2,150) of CRIMSON PEGASI fought MISER (71-3793) (33-11- 2,102) of SHADOW GOLD. TANNIN viciously subdued MISER in an action packed 11 minute gruesome bout. Oops, missed this one when I made my note above. This will probably turn out to be our longest fight. Two digits! Impressive. Especially once the fans caught on and started throwing coppers down onto the sands, distracting Miser further.... SPAZZ (33-6207) (29-20-0,124) of SNOTZI'S II fought MUSILAR DE MITTEL (53-5753) (28-14-0,143) of PUERCO'S PINATA. SPAZZ was vanquished by MUSILAR DE MITTEL in an exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. I thought it was the pinatas that got hit, not them that hit other people. Is this the "new look" in pinatas? Inquiring minds want to know. MASHER (60-4553) (28-27-3,138) of JOKA MASHER! fought POPE PAUL II (79-1317) (20-9-0,96) of CHAPEL ROCK. MASHER was narrowly defeated by POPE PAUL II in an exciting 6 minute gory duel. And there goes Masher's winning record over the hump and onto the downhill slope. Life is hard, and then you start losing fights. JOE KING (47-2223) (25-38-0,145) of ROYAL FLUSH fought THE GRINCH (29-4124) (19- 6-0,92) of CRUEL BUT FAIR. JOE KING was devastated by THE GRINCH in a popular 1 minute one-sided bout. I understand that the Grinch gave up stealing Christmasses, but he's obviously got his eye on a fine collection of wins here. Skills, too, I bet. DELICE THE RED (56-3401) (33-38-1,133) of BAD APPLES fought VAL BEMERIKI (51- 5018) (31-19-3,139) of GENOCIDE. DELICE THE RED overpowered VAL BEMERIKI in an action packed 1 minute uneven fray. But with remarkable forebearance, Delice did not 'ocide Val. GULLY (11-4277) (30-28-2,151) of 'CROSSED UP fought X THE BOLD (10-16) (49-45- 1,109) of WAR HAWKS. GULLY narrowly defeated X THE BOLD in an action packed 3 minute brutal fight. You gotta issue more challenges, X, or you're going to lose that winning record. SIR CUITOUS (10-4514) (30-18-0,160) of SIR AGLIO fought JACK SPRAT (47-2954) (42-46-4,140) of ROYAL FLUSH. SIR CUITOUS slimly won victory over JACK SPRAT in a 3 minute bloody competition. Slimly? How about a fat victory? I think that'd make a pleasant change. Fat and sassy. CRUSADER LORD (31-3946) (29-16-3,157) of THE STORMGUARDS fought FOREVER MAN (38- 4168) (26-32-0,103) of SANDS OF TIME. CRUSADER LORD overpowered FOREVER MAN in a 2 minute gory one-sided bout. Is this Forever Man's first appearance here? I don't remember seeing him around before. If it is, welcome, and if not, well, how about a drink? EMERALD DRAGONFLY (60-2586) (52-56-1,152) of MAGICK fought HYSTERIAS (19-4047) (25-23-3,144) of ANARCHY. EMERALD DRAGONFLY was devastated by HYSTERIAS in an exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. Hysterias did, indeed, provide us with excitement, flamboyance, and a high volume of cries and comments. These things can make a difference, especially when you want the crowd on your side. BEAUTY QUEEN (47-3352) (27-31-3,197) of ROYAL FLUSH fought LUDO (18-708) (47-54- 2,172) of THUNDR + LITENING. BEAUTY QUEEN viciously subdued LUDO in a crowd pleasing 3 minute bloody bout. Beauty has agreed to pose for sketches with the first five well-mannered men to ask. She will also kiss babies, but only two. There are limits to everything. WURP (10-18) (42-45-1,188) of WAR HAWKS fought 50 SUCKS (60-4129) (43-28-0,165) of JOKA MASHER!. WURP defeated 50 SUCKS in an action packed 1 minute struggle. But not one-sided or mis-matched. Odd. KAIDEN (35-3108) (65-71-1,204) of VIOLENT FEMS fought MARSHMELLOW GOLEM (44-285) (35-34-4,178) of D.A. REJECTS. KAIDEN overcame MARSHMELLOW GOLEM in an action packed 2 minute fight. I hear that she roasted it royally and pinned it between two graham crackers and a few squares of chocolate. Those were the good old days. FANNY BELT (28-1804) (33-22-1,193) of OTTO'S MECHANICS fought QRAPPY (10-4761) (25-42-1,155) of QUBIT. FANNY BELT savagely defeated QRAPPY in a popular 6 minute bloody brawl. The popularity seems to have arisen from the speculation as to whether or not Fanny's pants would fall down. They didn't... quite. DIRT WORM (82-2315) (46-21-0,192) of VERMIN!! fought BLACK RHINO (71-1834) (32- 17-1,181) of EDGE OF EXTINCTION. DIRT WORM was overcome by BLACK RHINO in an exciting 3 minute contest. It would appear that the Rhino is not going to become extinct today. Later, maybe, but not today. R'SHANN (20-577) (39-31-3,189) of OVERLORDS fought ROLEX WATCH (32-3732) (34-25- 0,203) of LUST MUPPETS. R'SHANN was overpowered by ROLEX WATCH in a crowd pleasing 1 minute one-sided match. It was Rolex's timely maneuver that won the day. Not that the day was lost, it was right here, though going away fast. You know how days are. And spy reports written near the end of them, come to that. They wander a little. But if you read this at the end of the day, we'll match, right? MISS WORLD (52-2370) (28-25-1,182) of THE FURIOUS FIVE fought PRIMUS (21-4975) (26-10-0,170) of REAL BEER. MISS WORLD was narrowly defeated by PRIMUS in an action packed 8 minute gory match. Second longest fight, though it might have been shorter if the beer had been Lite instead of Real. SPAZ GHOST (47-4161) (36-12-1,245) of DRAKE'S COMICS fought ABOUT YOUR CAR... (78-778) (93-128-6,195) of BAD NEWS. SPAZ GHOST lost to ABOUT YOUR CAR... in a 1 minute fight. Side-swiped. Very sad. I'd weep just a little here, but I'm out of beer. Can't weep without beer. It's a rule. And the first challenge match: BUBBLES (12-4981) (19-34-1,84) of POWERPUFF GIRLS challenged KOOKABURRA (33-4151) (36-50-1,91) of GIRL SCOUT COOKIES. Up 7. BUBBLES vanquished KOOKABURRA in a popular 1 minute gruesome uneven Challenge duel. Does this make Bubbles a cookie-monster? GIOVANNA (37-387) (23-24-5,68) of COLD STEEL challenged BABOO (74-2711) (37-84- 0,67) of WILD AMINALS. Down 1. GIOVANNA viciously subdued BABOO in an action packed 6 minute gruesome Challenge fight. This is ol' "Most Challenged" Baboo. Probably teaches like a sonofagun. HUNZICKER BOWL (23-4182) (23-10-1,75) of SKI TAOS challenged BUDDERCUP (60-5967) (25-19-0,81) of BUMS 'R' US. Up 6. HUNZICKER BOWL was defeated by BUDDERCUP in an exciting 4 minute Challenge struggle. I thought of some witty, devastating things to say about this, but the image of Ed. stayed my quill. That, and the fact that they were so witty and convoluted that they slipped out of my grasp the minute I looked away. BURGER KING (47-4152) (25-17-2,100) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged HALLIE O'DENE (58- 6018) (33-51-0,80) of CIRQUE DU MASQUES. Down 20. BURGER KING savagely defeated HALLIE O'DENE in a 2 minute Challenge competition. I bet Hallie wishes she was among the "kicked out to Talahya" crew. KHARN (51-2997) (30-31-4,92) of COLD STEEL challenged TALOS (31-2069) (35-15- 0,92) of THE STORMGUARDS. Straight across. KHARN was devastated by TALOS in a popular 1 minute one-sided Challenge contest. To which I, for one, say "Har." SWEET TOOTH (11-3248) (20-14-0,110) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS challenged STEVE MCQUEEN (47-3908) (25-27-1,114) of ROYAL FLUSH. Up 4. SWEET TOOTH demolished STEVE MCQUEEN in a popular 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. Steve will be spending the next couple of weeks at his dentist. CAFFIENE ACHIEVER (15-2429) (31-33-4,182) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q challenged W.T. POOH (33-4430) (50-35-0,183) of SNOTZI'S II. Up 1. CAFFIENE ACHIEVER viciously subdued W.T. POOH in a 7 minute Challenge fight. Honey is just doesn't stack up against caffeine as a stimulant. And for the title fight, nothing. Our previous Captain of the Guard has gone off to Talahya or somewhere, and nobody came out with a clear superiority to take it today. So it's still up for grabs, and I look for a frenzied effort to sieze the top spot next time. Don't let me down! THE DEAD W L K TEAM NAME SLAIN BY TURN PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE All -- Well, that was my last turn for a while here. Look me up in 103. -- Shadowgate Look for you? There's going to be some reason for us to come around in the middle of the rest period and hunt you down? Are you leaving a big bar tab here? No, seriously, have fun and come back when you can. DMobster -- You're welcome. I never go back on my word, even if I could have gone a whole split without losing the throne. Nemesis will look Explicit up in Gateway after beating on the best of 103 until the next split. -- Shadowgate Explicit -- You took me out no problem! Guess my manager was right in that I was not ready for you. I just didn't have what it took to beat you. With only getting one WT train in the tourney, I just didn't have nearly your skills. Wait until Gateway. I will catch you at some point! -- Nemesis Nemesis -- Well, checking back through the old newsletters I do have, it seems you've gone without a loss for 23 straight fights (starting turn 324). I don't know if that's a HG record, but I'm sure it would have made you Top Warrior of the Semester in my Semester reports if I didn't have gaps. Fortunately, I've constructed a golem to handle newsletter collections in the future, so I shouldn't be running into this problem any more. -- Drake Sethra Lavode -- You COULD have taught me more than one skill, you know. It would be okay, because I don't think I'm going to be here to use it on you. -- Hallie O'Dene P.S. Or maybe I will be. I know SOMEBODY is getting booted out of Home Guard, but I forget who. Sunny Brae -- Oh, well, an Orc. Naturally. -- Glory X the Bold -- Maybe you should try for X the Italic instead? -- Delice the Red Apple Jack -- Whew! (cough, cough) Strong stuff. But warming, very warming. Better than what they offered me in the Infirmary. -- Lethe Who is this disgusting "Hermy"? Besides being a despicable drunkard. -- Carrie Nation Soul Scourge -- You are a carrier of species hate, I see! But fear not, foul mammal, your day will end! -- Ski Mask, Founder and President Ducks with Swords P.S. It would HELP if my relentlessly mammalian manager would give me a strategy change. But no, he's biased, too. Oaf Modeen -- You would PRESUME to speak of the souls of noble Ducks? Keep your low, mammalian prejudices away from them! -- Ski Mask Ducks have souls? -- Ed. Of course not! -- Olaf Unless it's in the seasoning of the stuffing.... Sweet Tooth -- At least you aren't as disgusting as that Modeen fellow. -- Carrie Nation Shadowgate -- You will be missed, but at least it'll give some of us a chance at the top. Good luck in Free Blades (like you need luck!). -- Ho-Chan, Blue Moon et al Joe King -- Ha ha ha! The battle of the losers and I won. Does that make me a better or a worse loser? -- Qrappy The really important question is: are you a GOOD loser? Tesserack -- Har. -- Kharn Tesserack -- Translation: "Har." <shrug> Pity you're not sticking around--I think he needs to be put down a few dozen more times. Sometimes things just don't sink in, if you get my drift. -- Analastra Perfect Ten -- Har. -- Kharn Perfect Ten -- Uh, I guess I don't have to translate that one. -- Analastra Morrolan -- Here I thought I was signing up for time on an Elder Scrolls III network.... -- Tannin 30 April 2003 All -- Remember to put your arena number on your strategy sheets. Strategies turned in without an arena number run the risk of missing the turn. -- NAIEI LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS CAFFIENE ACHIEVER viciously subdued W.T. POOH in a 7 minute Challenge fight.
