Well, look here, it's an actual:
HOME GUARD SEMESTER IN REVIEW
(Turns 323 to 336)
Yep, this covers the Summer '02 semester here in the Guard. Sure, it's a little
late, but you folks wouldn't be getting this thing at all if it weren't for a fine
Gladiatorial Commission employee sneaking a couple old newsletters out to me to fill
in the gaps in my data.
It was a 14 turn semester, making it 1 turn shorter than the previous. In addition,
this semester we started out with 26 active managers as compared to last semester's
23 (yay for growth).
Now, without any further rambling, I give you:

Okay, so "Mo" (my nickname for the manager of the God Squad, since I don't have any
ID on him), manages to top the field this time around. He also manages to top
Andarus's record of 72.72% from the summer of '01. Nice job there, "Mo". Also, just
for the sake of completeness, if I recall correctly, I nicknamed the manager of the
War Hawks, "Birdie-Boy".
Now, as much as I'm sure these folks would like me to continue rambling on and
delaying their humiliation, there's only so many words I can type and still remain at
least semi-coherent. I mean, have you ever tried just rambling on and on with no
point whatsoever for any real length of time? It's a lot harder than Debbie Tonte
makes it look, let me tell you. So, with that in mind, I give you:

Nonononono. That's not really me on that list. It's an illusion. It's all just a
figment of your imagination. Pay no attention to my name being there whatsoever. In
any case, it wasn't as bad as LHI's 23.33% from summer '01, but then again, none of
us were. I guess that's what makes it a record.
Of course, some managers band together to form these alliance thingies. I guess they
think it gives them some kind of advantage. I think it's just so that they have a
regular circle of drinking buddies. I've been to a Face, so I know. In any case,

Yet one more time MOD manages to top the list. Of course, it's no where near as good
as their best (which also happens to be the Semester Report Alliance Record) of
65.95% set in the winter of '00/'01.

So, Aljafir (gesundheit) blows away Snowbound's 75% record from the winter of
'00/'01. Not only that, but they did it against a field that consisted of 4 more
eligible cities than anyone competed against last time around. Nice job.

Daiyla Kiv is once again at the bottom of the heap (just as they were on the last 2
reports). They still aren't doing as badly as their record 22.22% set in the summer
of '01. Alas, I had predicted that North Fork would end up among the top 5 cities,
but it was not to be. At least they're staying off the bottom 5 though.

And we have a record-breaker here in the guard. Fut Cough's 7 turn undefeated streak
places him (her? it?) as the #1 record, beating out the old record of Maelstrom's
(90.9%) set in the summer of '01. In fact, our top 3 managed to overcome that
record.

Hey, all the eligible warriors managed at least 2 wins. That's an unusual feat here
in the Guard. Of course, this means that Weary Willy still suffers the 'honor' of
holding the record of 0-14 from the summer of '01.

Continuing in my tradition of nicknaming the managers whose names I don't know, I
have dubbed the manager of Criminal Element to be "Jail Bird", Solaran Berserk is
"Captain Lolly Pop", The God Squad led by "Mo", Mercenary Tufts has "Tuf Ted" and
finally, Menagerie is fronted by "Various". You don't like it, tell me your real
name.
In any case, "Jail Bird" has the best semester average recognition per warrior and
flies way past "Dorf's" (nickname for Tee Off's manager) old record of 87 points.
Similarly, ol' "JB" tops the single turn average as well, but isn't anywhere near
"Rudy's" (Scarlet Knights) record of 115.

Oh goodie, more nicknames: "Sloppy Joe" manages Cream of the Slop, "Mr. Furious"

Gerfel's Friends, and "Lord Acronym" is in charge of W.K.S. Now that that's out of
the way, LHI is still the top dog (or maybe not) with an average semester loss of
-51.5. Likewise, Sultan maintains his "dominance" with a single turn average loss of
-40, which Tualatin tried his best to beat.

Xochithlan's massive 106 point average rec gain still isn't quite enough to top
Andor's 117.5 point record. Similarly, Erinika wasn't quite able to make it to
Arkers' 48 point single turn average.

A little less suckitude in the semester averages this time around and Lapur still
holds the distinction of having the worst average semester recognition loss with -65
points. However, the single turn averages are a bit worse this time but still not
bad enough to dethrone Erinika and their -85 point average from summer '01.

Nemesis, being the studly kind of dude she is, not only blows past the competition
for the highest total recognition gain this semester, but she also nailed a new
record by passing Blackmyth's old record by a solid 41 points. In the other column,
in spite of his generally sucky semester, Beerbarian managed the highest single turn
recognition gain. It still wasn't enough to pass the 115 point record held by Talon
Warsmith.

No one managed to stay Captain longer than 3 turns, which adds up to only 21.4% of
the last 14 turns. This is well short of the record 40% of turns held jointly by
Noght and Grasshopper. On the recognition front, Nemesis's 28.6% of turns as
Recognition Leader is way short of Earthquake's shattering 60% of turns.

Too Much Con 2 was the only Pop Leader last semester, and he does it again this
semester. While it may seem like TMC2 has been Pop Leader forever, he did have a
predecessor in About Your Car who had been there for 67% of the available turns.
Beerbarian was our only TWF repeat this time around, and thus the record of 2 turns
(shared by way too many to list) still stands. Come on, someone do more than 2
turns! It would appear that Qrappy really loves the fans loathing, having spent 3
turns as This Week's Least favorite, which makes him the new record-holder at 21.4%
of the available turns (beating out the 20% jointly held by Baboo & Men In Black).

You'll notice a slight change in how the Popularity Lists are being presented this
time around. The scores are arrived at by giving the last person on the "Ten Other
Most Popular Fighters" list 1 point, 2nd to last gets 2 points, etc. The "Other Ten
Least Popular Fighters" list works the same but with negative points. Unfortunately,
that makes it hard to compare with the stats I used to keep, but tough. I like this
way better and since I'm the one writing the report, you'll just have to live with

Unfortunately there were a couple turns where the Most Avoided and Most Avoiding
weren't reported in the newsletter, throwing off the stats a bit, but it looks like
Crip's the one most people fear this time out with 28.6% of turns as Most Avoided.
Of course, that doesn't match the 45% record set by me. So, HA! Similarly, Crip
once again tries to beat his old 53% record for doing the Most Avoiding, but only
pulled off 42.9% this time around. Perhaps if there weren't so much Crip's Crap out
there, he wouldn't bear such a resemblance to a certain lion known to hang out in Oz.

Once again, Manager's Scumfest contest overshadows any of the performances relating
to fight length. It almost doesn't seem worth reporting on. On the other hand,
average fight length is 0.16 minutes longer than last semester's.

Okay, this should bring us up to speed on our Semester Reporting.
THE HOME GUARD SEMESTER IN REVIEW
(Turns 337 to 348)
A 12 turn semester for the winter of '02/'03 (2 shorter than the previous semester).
We ended the semester with a whopping 32 active managers which is 6 higher than last
time. Looks like the 'Old Fogies' arena is catching on in popularity.

For those who don't know (which means you aren't me), "Poncho" would be whoever
manages the Stormguards & Stormlords. So, weatherboy, who the heck are you? Well,
no matter who you are, you came out on top this semester, but it's not quite enough
to beat the 73.68% record held by "Mo" (the manager of the God Squad). Also you'll
note (or I will) that I moved from the 'Bottom 5 Managers' list last time around into
the 'Top 5 Managers'. You can't keep a good quacker down long.

Again, we have a nicknamed manager. If you'll recall, I've been referring to the
manager of The War Hawks as "Birdy Boy" since I've never gotten a real manager name
to go with the team. Of course, considering the last place finish, the feathered one
may wish to remain anonymous. Well, this fowl individual can take heart in the fact
that Andarus's 23.33% record is far more embarrassing and has stood since the Summer
of '01.

record set in the last Semester Report. Unfortunately, there's still no North Fork
on this list, but we're handicapped by slow managers. Or something like that.

Alas, Daiyla Kiv's 22.22% record will still haunt them as no other city's ever done
that badly for the history of the Semester Report.

Still, your 22 straight turns undefeated is very impressive. Too bad you couldn't

Cough (who's 7-0-0 pales in comparison).

First off, a few introductions: "L. Flint" runs Censored, "Scrap Iron's" in charge

that that's done, I have to say that "Flint's" Semester Recognition per Warrior
average is so far ahead of old 106 point record (by "Jail Bird" of Criminal Element)
that it's just scary. "Shades" wasn't quite so lucky as his 46 point Turn
Recognition per Warrior average doesn't come anywhere near the record 115 points held
by "Rudy" of Scarlet Knights.

loss easily holds its dominance as the biggest semester drop ever. Not only that,

a good effort of it).

The loud sucking sound of Zukal's performance wasn't quite enough to drown out

Everyone turned to look at Moonjumper, who frowned at the ground between her
feet. "I'm not sure," she said slowly, "but I might--only might--be able to identify
them. But it would help a LOT if I had some idea, however vague, of what the
identifying characteristics of such a site WERE."
All eyes now moved to the old wizard. Fizban sighed. "I suppose 'used to be
strongly magical but nothing working there now' is not enough?"
"You suppose correctly!" Carris muttered. "What an idea--used to be...." He
shook his head. "The Isle positively reeks of magic, past and present, and well you
must know it, if you're any kind of wizard at all!"
"Look," Scarlatti interrupted, "I don't know much about magic, but it stands to
reason that the kind we're talking about would be different than, um, regular magic,
and a lot more powerful. There must be some way to tell that?"
There was a silence that seemed long.
Finally Rogan said, "What about the ferry docks? That's where the physical
connections are anchored, so why shouldn't the magical connections be in the same
locations?"
"Sounds good," Scarlatti agreed. "Can you lead us to a ferry dock through this
fog?"
The blind gladiator smiled faintly. "Easily." He set off down the street, and
the others fell in behind him.
The city was mostly silent, and the gladiators met no one as they hurried toward
the shore. There were people about--now and then they could hear footsteps fading
away, or voices just too muffled to be understandable. The fog was so heavy that
even their immediate surroundings seemed unreal. A sound shook the air, heavy as a
mountain, dull as despair. It was repeated six times.
"Gods!" Fizban wiped sweat from his face.
"What was it?" Carris asked, one hand on his sword.
"A clock tolling the hour of seven," Moonjumper guessed, but she sounded unsure
of it. "Maybe the one at the Stronghold Academy...."
"It never sounded like that before," Scarlatti growled.
"Another sign of the differences here and now, wherever and whenever here and
now is." Rogan pulled his cloak a little more snugly around himself, though the
evening was no colder now than it had been an hour ago. Or maybe it was colder. It
was impossible to be sure.
Sooner than they expected, the cobbles underfoot changed to planks, and the
smell of the air changed from stone and fog to mud and fish and water.
Carris Fallstar stopped and sniffed, then drew in a lungful of air and seemed to
taste it slowly. "Salt water, I could swear it smells like salt water," he muttered.
"But the lake is fresh!" Scarlatti protested.
"But is this the lake we remember?" Fizban asked. "I doubt it."
The Isle of the Eye, Lirin Kiv:
The carriage jolted as though the pavement had suddenly ended, rolled a few feet
farther, and stopped. After a moment, there was a creaking shift as the driver
climbed down. Shylock glimpsed his lantern moving through the fog, going ahead past
the horses, then coming back.
The face that appeared at the window was white, eyes round with disbelief. "The
road is lost," the driver said hoarsely.
Shylock frowned at him. "You mean YOU are lost--"
"No! I swear, I was following the road right along, and then it...it just
wasn't there anymore!"
Shylock looked hard at the driver and decided the man wasn't lying. He might be
mistaken, but he believed what he was saying. And if he wasn't mistaken.... Well,
better to find out for himself, the gladiator decided. He unlatched the door and
stepped down from the carriage. "Wait here," he said over his shoulder to Clemenda.
"Not hardly!" She climbed down after him.
The driver held up his lantern, swinging it from side to side, which set shadows
swooping wildly. Shylock took the lantern away from him and held it steady.
It was true. A pace behind the rear wheels of the carriage were the flat stones
of the roadway. Under the wheels and ahead was rocky dirt and tangled grasses and no
sign that there'd ever been a road.
"Amazing," Shylock murmured, "this is something quite without precedent, so far
as I know. I wonder what else has changed?"
"Don't say that!" Clemenda looked around fearfully. "I like things to be
ordinary," she whispered, "no surprises...."
"It would appear that surprises are the name of the entertainment tonight,"
Shylock countered. "Still.... Driver, take us back the way we came, to Lirin Kiv."
The man hurried to climb back onto the box as Shylock assisted Clemenda into the
body of the carriage again. The horses were turned, and they went rumbling back onto
the paving and southward...or at least, back. No telling if it was still south.
Shylock leaned out the window to watch ahead. Even in this fog, it should be
possible to see the lighted tower of the Temple of Mantor for a fair distance.
Judging the current speed of the horses against the pace at which they had come out,
it should be possible to see it now.
But he didn't see it.
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Drake, good work there. But now you see why I face each spy report with
trepidation and a drink in my hand (no umbrella by request). I could tell you most
of the missing manager names, I think, but I'm looking forward to their comments in
the personals.
If last time was hot, next time must be hottest, because this week is definitely
hotter. How you all could get out there and fight is an amazement. I always
d'ruthered do my fighting in Octorber, and maybe April, and spend the rest of the
time just sitting around. Once you youngsters get a few more years on the clock,
you'll see the wisdom of that.
Royal Flush most avoided by The Stormguards. Snide seemed to think that was
something shameful, but it just sounds like sense to me. Snide never had any sense,
wouldn't know what it was if it walked up and bit him on the, uh, nose. Bubbles got
the most challenges, what with everyone wanting to get into the bathtub with a fun-
loving woman like that.
Forty-five fights, no deaths, twenty-seven challenge matches, only one standby.
A good showing. That puts us up there between Darkholm and Andorak somewhere, though
Free Blades is ahead of everything but Primus and Talahya. Well, maybe Gateway, I
don't pay any attention to that.
So, just to work a quick, sweaty way through the fights, here they are:

4111) (23-16-1,74) of ANARCHY. AVARICIOUS AVON was demolished by OSIRIS in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided conflict. Enforcing tomatoes isn't the same as dueling.
Probably better than no practice, though.
NESSIE (33-6755) (16-9-0,57) of OF MYTHOS AND MEN fought KHARN (51-2997) (30-33-
4,83) of COLD STEEL. NESSIE was handily defeated by KHARN in an action packed 2
minute mismatched bout. Hey, if somebody offered me cold anything, I'd probably go
along with it.
PREACHER (7-5083) (16-5-2,55) of THRILLZ & KILLZ fought HAPPY JACK (19-4086)
(30-21-2,84) of THE MOTHERSHIP. PREACHER was vanquished by HAPPY JACK in a 1 minute
one-sided bout. I could probably come up with a mildly insulting play on words for
Preacher, but what the heck, the guy had an unlucky match-up and lost. He doesn't
need me throwing bricks at him, too, does he?
TORATORATORRES (11-726) (20-17-0,90) of U.B.O.S.M. fought NO CHASER (33-6490)
(23-16-0,66) of JOYS OF BOOZE. TORATORATORRES was overpowered by NO CHASER in a 1
minute one-sided battle. You shoulda had a chaser, Toratoratorres.
MIME (2-4966) (17-10-2,64) of HARLEQUINS fought NUTT BRITTLE (19-3983) (16-6-
0,54) of CARNIVAL. MIME handily defeated NUTT BRITTLE in an exciting 1 minute one-
sided conflict. This is one of the mimes gladiators always talk about that fight
better than the opponents they have just defeated.
JUGGLER (2-4965) (20-8-0,71) of HARLEQUINS fought STARBUCK (6-5387) (19-13-0,69)
of SCIENCE FICTION. JUGGLER was savagely defeated by STARBUCK in an exciting 3
minute bloody brawl. I figure it's the caffeine.
SULTAN (10-4516) (21-6-0,69) of SIR AGLIO fought NED THE JANITOR (66-2973) (16-
19-0,69) of ANDORIAN UNIVERSITY. SULTAN lost to NED THE JANITOR in a 1 minute
conflict. (sigh) They just don't make janitors like they used to. Why I remember
one, a crotchety old guy, couldn't catch a snail if he saw one littering....
ODEN WARFIEND (11-1335) (23-15-2,91) of U.B.O.S.M. fought SISYPHUS (14-3906)
(20-16-0,84) of THE DEATH SQUAD. ODEN WARFIEND was vanquished by SISYPHUS in a 1
minute one-sided struggle. So much for being a war fiend; no good when a big rock
drops on your head, eh?

18-2,99) of ROYAL FLUSH. SPAZZ vanquished BURGER KING in an exciting 1 minute
gruesome one-sided match. I could vanquish a burger king, except for the onions. I
don't do onions.

popular 5 minute brutal fray. Better to pit Hungry Harold against Burger King, don't
you think? It'd be a match made in, er, somewhere.
CRUSADER LORD (31-3946) (30-17-3,162) of THE STORMGUARDS fought HOT HAZEL (98-
608) (14-18-4,150) of JUNKYARD WARS. CRUSADER LORD devastated HOT HAZEL in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute one-sided battle. Cooled her right off.
PRIMUS (21-4975) (28-10-0,203) of REAL BEER fought STELLA BLUE (53-6167) (23-11-
1,185) of PUERCO'S PINATA. PRIMUS subdued STELLA BLUE in an action packed 6 minute
gory contest. So, why is Primus not in Primus, eh?
SPAZ GHOST (47-4161) (36-14-1,193) of DRAKE'S COMICS fought 50 SUCKS (60-4129)
(44-29-0,170) of JOKA MASHER! SPAZ GHOST was overpowered by 50 SUCKS in a 3 minute
uneven bout. Ah, but wait until the Ghost gets that old!
DIRT WORM (82-2315) (47-22-0,195) of VERMIN!! fought SUNNY BRAE (53-5638) (33-
24-1,187) of PUERCO'S PINATA. DIRT WORM narrowly defeated SUNNY BRAE in an exciting
13 minute fight. Thirteen minutes is too long in this heat.
LUDO (18-708) (48-55-2,191) of THUNDR + LITENING fought QRAPPY (10-4761) (26-43-
1,168) of QUBIT. LUDO viciously subdued QRAPPY in an exciting 6 minute brutal fight.
Heck, SIX minutes is too long.
Ah, the challenge matches. Or perhaps in some cases the challenge mis-matches.

(17-11-1,85) of PARANOID ASYLUM. Up 5. SABLE was savagely defeated by MIDNIGHT

Midnight faith as opposed to other kinds, but a runner from the printer is standing
outside my door tapping his foot. Spoilsport.

manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
