WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Eye of the Storm #69 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
In the Far West:
Shania Silverstar stared at the man, eyes narrowed in calculation. She sorted
data quickly. A man of the local race, one she'd never seen before, not that she'd
seen all the races of Ghea. An advanced gladiator. The nearest of Lady Greywand's
arenas lay to the east of here, in Lirith Kai. And the westernmost of those
arenas.... "You're from Simtakka?"
"Smart as well as beautiful, I see." Faintly sneering. Not mocking her--she
thought that he probably faced all life with a sneer. "I earned my immortality in
Simtakka," he admitted after a moment. His scarred hands flexed. "I did it the hard
way, too. The Adantri aren't all pushovers."
"The ones I've met aren't," Shania agreed. "And their sense of honor is strong.
Very strong."
He bristled immediately. "If you're expecting that kind of soft-in-the-head
honor from ME--"
Shania smiled faintly. Some things a woman didn't need magic to understand.
"You could have attacked me while I slept," she said. "But you didn't. Yes, I am
expecting that honor from you. My name is Shania Silverstar, I graduated from an
Andorian arena." She held out her hand.
"Andorian. Gods, I should have known...a lot more softheaded than the Adantri.
Gods curse the luck." When her extended hand didn't waver, he finally grasped it and
shook it once, then turned away. Over his shoulder, he growled, "I'm called Zakar."
"Zakar. Good. If you have food out there, I would be glad to share it with
you."

"There shouldn't BE a reef here!" Werre said again, scowling at his chart.
"But we're stuck on one just the same," Jammies said with cheerful tactlessness.
"Where do you suppose it came from?"
"Doesn't matter where it came from," Ashon Chang growled. "The important thing
is getting off it before the waves pound us into pieces."
"Which they will do," Rughal added, studying the clouds that were being driven
up from the south by a strong wind, and the increasingly rough sea below them.
"This is some kind of magical effect," Herlas muttered. He had been tentatively
readmitted to comrade-ship and allowed to move about the ship freely...although
Rughal was usually not far away. "The reef, at least. The coming storm," he turned
to stare southward, "I don't know. Even that MIGHT be magical. There's a mishmash
of forces at work here...."
"Can magic get us off this reef then?" Werre asked suddenly. "Can you do
something?"
Herlas shrugged. "I don't think so. This is not my area of expertise--weather,
ships, and the moving of large objects." His eyes, unusually dark for a Fratsfan,
narrowed as he stared into the water. "This is what comes of not stabilizing the Eye
quickly enough," he muttered. "It could have been prevented--" He twitched when
Rughal, standing behind him, growled. More briskly, he went on, "I don't think
there's a lot I can do here, very powerful forces are at work--more powerful than
those any one, or any two men, for that matter, can muster. And if our hull has been
damaged, we might not WANT to get the ship off this reef, you know! Better to be
stranded than to sink."
"We won't sink if we get moving quickly enough," Werre countered. "If we get
off right away. But if we stay here and let the wind and the waves pound us and drag
us back and forth across whatever it is we hit--"
"Looks like the top of a belfry," Jammies said, hanging over the side.
Werre looked at Ashon Chang, who stared back at him. Then both of them glanced
around. They were in the middle of a plain of water, with not even a rocky islet to
be seen.
"I don't suppose it matters what we hit," Ashon Chang said after a moment. The
important thing is to get off it without having the bottom torn out of our ship."
"Well, at least this explains why there aren't a lot of other ships following
this good current," Vurand said. "What do we do?"
"Two men over the side," Werre decided. "With ropes to keep them from being
swept away, of course. To find out exactly how we're hung up." He glanced around
the little group. "I presume all of you can swim?"

Shania washed her hands in the little stream that flowed through the shrine,
then sat back against the wall and sighed. "I needed that, thank you. Delicious."
Zakar, squatting on the other side of the stream licked his own fingers and
snorted. "Delicious," he repeated mockingly. "I bet you never ate korry in your
life."
"That the food was unfamiliar doesn't make it necessarily inedible," she
retorted. She glanced out the doorway of the shrine. Twilight had fallen, but the
sounds of a large population were still audible, and the light breeze carried the
scent of thousands of cooking fires as well as the smell of a seacoast. "How long
can we stay here?"
Zakar shrugged. "I don't suppose Hodan cares, even if he really is a god and
not just a myth. But we're both going to have people looking for us, and sooner or
later, they'll look here."
Shania blinked. "They'd violate a religious sanctuary? And what 'they', come
to think of it? I know I am likely to be pursued by priests, but what about you?"
"Everybody'd like to catch me." He seemed to take satisfaction in that. "I'm a
flaming revolutionary. And a heretic, too. 'Course, those're the same thing, here
in Zinaco." At her surprised look, he added, "They're a theocracy."
"What did you do to--? No, that's none of my business, I suppose. How do we
get out of here before we're found? Do we work together," she wasn't sure she wanted
to work with Zakar, there was something about him...but he was the only potential
ally she had here, "or each manage our escape separately?"
Zakar was silent for a long time, studying her with a critical gaze, the way he
might look at a horse he was thinking of buying. From someone he didn't trust.
Finally he said, "We work together." His hard mouth curled into a smile of sorts.
"I've got half an idea, but it would mean playing roles--you much good as an
actress?"
Shania's eyes narrowed. He seemed too pleased with his idea for it to be
something she was going to like. "Depends on the role." She considered mentioning
her magical skills and immediately decided against it. Better to keep that knowledge
in reserve until she knew Zakar better. And maybe not then.

In the end, it was Ashon Chang and Rughal who went over the side. "Because,"
the samurai explained to Rughal as he slid down a rope and into the water, "we are
victims of our own honor. Werre must remain with the ship, as our most skilled
sailor, neither Jammies nor Vurand swims well, and Herlas claims that he cannot swim
at all. Less honorable men than we are might point out--" He gasped. "The water is
colder than I expected! Might point out," he continued, moving out of the path of
Rughal's descent, "that no great degree of swimming is required, and there ARE the
safety ropes...."
Rughal laughed, which Ashon Chang considered a small victory; the ranger hadn't
so much as smiled since Shania had been taken from them. "I'd go back up and do just
that," he said, "but we're already down here and wet, so we might as well take a look
at things."
The two men made their way along the small ship's waterline, probing with light
poles for depth. Rughal, who was in the lead, made the first find. "Something
here," he said, handing Ashon his pole. "I'll take a look." Before the samurai
could reply, he doubled and thrust downward vanishing beneath the surface.
The next minute seemed a very long one, and Ashon Chang began to hyperventilate
in preparation for diving himself.
Rughal resurfaced, gasped in breath, and said, "It IS a belfry! Or at least the
roof of some kind of tower. Hard to tell what, and who cares? I think we can get
off when the wind changes, IF it changes, as it usually does at sunset."
"Is the hull damaged?"
"Not that I can see. It's a roof with two ridge poles, and the front of our
ship is sitting between them like they were the jaws of a vice. We can't go forward,
but we should be able to go back, if the wind will cooperate." Rughal grabbed his
rope and began to pull himself up hand over hand.
"Excellent!" Ashon Chang began to pull himself up as well. "If the wind
doesn't cooperate, we will get Herlas to do it."

Not Lirin Kiv:
Shylock, who had been lurking behind a hedge of rosebushes as Master Dan Shao
explained the war with the Grey Witch to Clemenda, frowned and sank down onto a handy
bench. This would require thought. This "Grey Witch of the East" sounded nearly as
powerful as Sheila Greywand, and if that was the case, she was a threat to his plans.
She would have to be removed--which had the added advantage that it would apparently
make him a hero to these people. Or else he would have to write off this world as a
place to establish himself and find some other. Because he had no intention of
sharing power....
The thing to do, he decided, was to visit the home city of this Witch. He
didn't have to actually meet her to discover just how much of a danger she might be.
But he had to be closer. And fortunately, there was an obvious reason for the
journey: He, and also Clemenda, which would get her out of the hands of that cursed
Master Dan Shao, would be seeking aid in finding and closing the Gate that had
brought them here. An obvious reason, and one that no one could fault.
He would propose the plan to Dan Shao immediately. No point in wasting time.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"I don't see why we had to rush off like this," Clemenda muttered. "Another day
or two wouldn't have mattered."
"It might matter," Shylock assured her. "With magic, you can never tell about
things like that. It MIGHT matter." He drew her down onto the bench beside him,
smiling at the water that separated them from Master Dan Shao. More water every
minute. "Besides," he said, "I promised you dinner in Talahya, and I can fulfill
that promise till we get home."
"But the Gate we came through must have been back there on that island!"
"Gates are magic and don't always follow linear logic, my dear."
"But--"
"And besides, Dan Shao sent men out to search the island, and they reported that
the Gate is gone. Or at least closed." He shrugged. "So we need to consult someone
who understands the magic of this world. Dan Shao said the greatest magician or
wizard or whatever you want to call her, the Grey Witch, lives on an island--Thallia,
it's called--to the east."
Clemenda sighed. "Okay, I don't argue with your logic, I guess. But I hope
it's not FAR to the east, because I don't like sailing." She swallowed twice and
moved back toward the rail, leaning over it. "I really don't...."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"I don't know how far it is to Thallia," the ship's captain said. "I don't sail
there. Just the Irindan Sea, and to the Pillars of Gold, the gates of the Middle
Sea, you know, no farther." He gestured toward the east. "It's dangerous out there!
Our Sea Patrols keep order in the Irindan, but the Middle Sea is full of pirates.
Dangerous place, and you'd do better not to go. Stay in Lirith Kai. No place else
is as good anyway."
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
That was the ULTIMATE indignity, that they should send their ridiculous Olaf
golem HERE. Gods, have they no sensitivity? No respect? It's INFAMOUS! They won't
get away with THAT again!
So, okay, it's over. The current stuff--
Royal Flush was avoided by Overlords.
Mummy got the most challenges.
Nobody died.
Thirty-three fights, twelve challenge matches, two of those being TV challenges.
NO standbys fought! Which means sixty-six active warriors here, not bad for
right after the Split.
The longest fight was twelve minutes, which might merit some kind of turtle,
only they tell me what I've got here is actually a tortoise. Or maybe a terrapin.
Does it matter? It LOOKS like a turtle.
So, the fights. Let's see who's still with us and who isn't.
QUONSET (10-4990) (20-10-0,70) of QUBIT fought MOD COD (55-2638) (41-73-1,74) of
RHYME TYME. QUONSET was overpowered by MOD COD in a 1 minute one-sided fray. Will
Mod Cod ever go away? Probably not. You know how it is with fish.
TORATORATORRES (11-726) (24-24-0,76) of U.B.O.S.M. fought SIR VILE (10-4754)
(19-18-0,67) of SIR AGLIO. TORATORATORRES bested SIR VILE in an exciting 2 minute
bloody battle. I liked the bit with the "pawing the sand, snorting, and shaking his
horns." Very dramatic.
CARRIE NATION (64-4054) (36-65-0,70) of REFORMERS fought QUIBBLE (10-4756) (16-
36-0,73) of QUBIT. CARRIE NATION savagely defeated QUIBBLE in an action packed 3
minute gory contest. Another drinker biting the dust? Someone needs to explain to
this woman the difference between: a) a convivial cup between friends, b) a medicinal
draught, and c) getting a little carried away. She's trying to reform the bookies
now!
LUNA TYCK (33-5761) (31-33-1,85) of DRAKE'S PETTING ZOO fought ANDAR (11-1038)
(21-16-1,70) of U.B.O.S.M. LUNA TYCK overpowered ANDAR in a popular 1 minute
gruesome one-sided bout. So tell us, did or did not Luna suck Andar's blood?
Inquiring minds want to know.
TUTANKHAMUN (71-3357) (18-11-0,71) of CARTOUCHE fought EXILE (7-4618) (21-16-
1,77) of BLADES OF ICE. TUTANKHAMUN handily defeated EXILE in an exciting 1 minute
gory one-sided fight. Will Exile be able to spell his opponent's name when the time
comes to write a personal? (That's a hint, Exile.)
TUM (18-7380) (14-11-1,54) of FROM THE FACE fought LYTA ALEXANDER (65-5021) (13-
8-0,79) of AND SO IT BEGINS. TUM was overpowered by LYTA ALEXANDER in a 1 minute
uneven fight. I thought Tums were for the tummy, not the face, but what do I know,
eh?
IPECAC (45-3625) (14-8-0,61) of EMETICS fought GLLEELLMANN (11-4514) (25-9-0,89)
of CARNIVAL. IPECAC won victory over GLLEELLMANN in a 2 minute bout. The G-man
tripped over those extra ells. Oh, yes, he did. I saw it happen.
ELEKTRA (4-3652) (22-10-0,75) of LOST SOULS II fought T'AN SUNG (14-3704) (17-
13-1,79) of SHAO-LIN HEROES. ELEKTRA handily defeated T'AN SUNG in a 1 minute
mismatched bout. Why was this one mis-matched? A lost soul of the female persuasion
and a hero seem well matched to me.
FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE (98-809) (9-8-4,52) of COLLEGE RADIO fought KRAC D'CHEVALIERS
(31-4345) (18-15-0,59) of THE STORMGUARDS. FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE overcame KRAC
D'CHEVALIERS in a 1 minute bout. Do you have a permit for that fountain?
KONGOL (7-4524) (30-16-2,100) of BLADES OF ICE fought SUMTHING PAINFUL (11-4735)
(21-20-0,70) of U.B.O.S.M. KONGOL vanquished SUMTHING PAINFUL in a 1 minute uneven
bout. Just call Kongol "aspirin."
SPUTTER (82-15095) (23-11-1,91) of JOKA MASHER fought GAR & BRILL (38-4252) (19-
22-0,53) of JUST BECAUSE. SPUTTER vanquished GAR & BRILL in an exciting 1 minute
one-sided fight. SOME people clean clocks, but Sputter cleand the Gar & Brill, and
high time, too! That thing was filthy.
SPAZZ (33-6207) (36-28-0,125) of SNOTZI'S II fought EMILY (17-5753) (26-15-
0,147) of BLADES OF STEEL. SPAZZ overpowered EMILY in a popular 1 minute one-sided
duel. This is the "Two Z Spazz, not to be confused with the One Z Spaz Ghost,"
right? Am I sighk-ick, or what?
BEER GOGGLES (33-6819) (23-17-1,123) of JOYS OF BOOZE fought AVALANCHE (75-2213)
(20-4-1,141) of FORCE OF NATURE. BEER GOGGLES was devastated by AVALANCHE in a
popular 1 minute one-sided bout. Avalanches are always like that. It's their
nature, not to mention their force.
DELICE THE RED (56-3401) (38-48-1,114) of BAD APPLES fought TICKLES (9-3486)
(35-58-1,104) of MY PETS. DELICE THE RED was overpowered by TICKLES in an action
packed 1 minute uneven fray. Cute, very cute. Are we going to allow this kind of
thing in our arena?
HALLIE O'DENE (58-6018) (43-56-0,151) of CIRQUE DU MASQUES fought W.T. POOH (33-
4430) (58-42-0,138) of SNOTZI'S II. HALLIE O'DENE savagely defeated W.T. POOH in an
action packed 5 minute brutal fight. And how shoe could be savage with the sweet
Bear of Little Brain, I don't know. She must be Evil after all.
LOOMING BIRD (82-424) (45-59-4,176) of YOU FEEL THAT! fought STARBUCK (6-5387)
(27-17-0,141) of SCIENCE FICTION. LOOMING BIRD handily defeated STARBUCK in a 1
minute mismatched competition.
QRAPPY (10-4761) (35-47-1,163) of QUBIT fought BLACK RHINO (71-1834) (37-27-
1,177) of EDGE OF EXTINCTION. QRAPPY beat BLACK RHINO in a popular 1 minute match.
More evidence in support of the theory that Qrappy's name was bestowed in sly jest.
MOJO JOJO (10-4643) (26-26-2,163) of TOWNSVILLAINS fought KOOKABURRA (33-4151)
(44-57-2,114) of GIRL SCOUT COOKIES. MOJO JOJO beat KOOKABURRA in an exciting 1
minute match. Quite the cookie-muncher, ol' Mojo.
MASHER (60-4553) (35-35-3,186) of JOKA MASHER! fought CRUSADER LORD (31-3946)
(35-25-4,156) of THE STORMGUARDS. MASHER was devastated by CRUSADER LORD in a
popular 1 minute mismatched brawl. Mashed, in fact. Flat. Very messy. The
custodians are annoyed about it.
R'SHANN (20-577) (48-37-3,204) of OVERLORDS fought DIRT WORM (82-2315) (55-27-
0,191) of VERMIN!! R'SHANN viciously subdued DIRT WORM in an action packed 12 minute
brutal duel. This is our longest fight, and let me tell you, keeping up the action
for twelve minutes, and remaining vicious the whole time besides, is not a simple
matter. A salute and a small turtle to each of you. They tell me you can etch your
initials onto the turtles' shells and then come back and find them walking around,
inintials and all, years from now. Amazing, is it not?
KAIDEN (35-3108) (76-75-2,223) of VIOLENT FEMS fought 50 SUCKS (60-4129) (54-32-
0,191) of JOKA MASHER! KAIDEN viciously subdued 50 SUCKS in an action packed 2
minute gory fight. Ah, yes, some people become violent fems, but others are born
that way. You can guess which in this case, can't you?
The challenge matches--
KOGITSUNE MARU (1-5298) (20-16-1,47) of SWEORDMASTERS challenged ODEN WARFIEND
(11-1335) (26-23-3,42) of U.B.O.S.M. Down 5. KOGITSUNE MARU demolished ODEN
WARFIEND in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge match. I think the bookies are stacking
the deck on these matches. Have you noticed that they never call the fight "uneven,"
setting the odds appropriately, until after it's over?
XISS (11-1305) (25-31-4,63) of U.B.O.S.M. challenged MUMMY (99-853) (8-10-5,55)
of IKER'S CORPSES. Down 8. XISS was demolished by MUMMY in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched Challenge match. This was Mummy the Most Challenged, and let it be
a lesson to you all. Never, ever, sass your Mummy, boys.
CIARAN (1-7176) (15-7-1,53) of MANNEQUIN'S BEST challenged FOREVER MAN (38-4168)
(28-45-0,60) of SANDS OF TIME. Up 7. CIARAN savagely defeated FOREVER MAN in a
popular 3 minute gory Challenge melee. Savagery. Gore. All the time, all day,
every day except Sundays and Postal Holidays. I don't know how I stay sane.
THREEKARD (47-4600) (15-11-1,73) of CARNIVAL challenged LETHE (9-4782) (27-20-
2,81) of BLUE MOON. Up 8. THREEKARD was vanquished by LETHE in a popular 1 minute
one-sided Challenge duel. Some people just don't appreciate games of skill,
especially when all the skill is slanted toward the other side....
NEDIAM NORI (31-4069) (21-14-1,84) of CISUM S. EKARD challenged SKI MASK (58-
5869) (29-51-0,85) of CIRQUE DU MASQUES. Up 1. NEDIAM NORI vanquished SKI MASK in a
popular 1 minute uneven Challenge duel. And it's Duck Soup at someone's house
tonight!
HIGH GUN (15-4386) (14-17-1,42) of TRIPLE CROWN challenged GLORY HOLE (98-870)
(7-11-4,40) of SUPERIOR KILLS. Down 2. HIGH GUN overpowered GLORY HOLE in a 1
minute uneven Challenge melee. Galloped right over him, in fact. I didn't realize
we were going to use the arena for races between fight sets. I kinda like the idea,
though.
LIBERTY BELLE (12-5448) (21-25-0,100) of POWERPUFF GIRLS challenged PUTZ'N ALONG
(60-5437) (26-20-0,128) of JOKA MASHER!. Up 28. LIBERTY BELLE viciously subdued
PUTZ'N ALONG in a 4 minute Challenge match. And after four minutes of it, she
probably was puffing, but that didn't slow her down! Amazing woman, Ms. Belle.
BUBBLES (12-4981) (24-44-1,131) of POWERPUFF GIRLS challenged PREACHER (7-5083)
(24-9-3,172) of THRILLZ & KILLZ. Up 41. BUBBLES lost to PREACHER in a 2 minute
Challenge fight. And what did she expect, eh? Looked like a sure-thing loss to me,
and that, unfortunately, is exactly the way the bookies rated it, too. Buncha spoil
sports.
TALOS (31-2069) (45-20-0,189) of THE STORMGUARDS challenged VELVET VIXEN (9-
3275) (30-31-0,190) of LOST SOULS II. Up 1. TALOS was defeated by VELVET VIXEN in a
crowd pleasing 3 minute Challenge match. Defeated, maybe, but what a way to go.
Our two TV challenges, and congratulations to the warriors that earned 'em:
NUTMEG (7-5167) (16-10-1,51) of SUGAR AND SPICE TV challenged ONE A DAY (98-799)
(13-5-3,59) of MY DRUGS. Up 8. NUTMEG was unbelievably bested by ONE A DAY in a 3
minute Challenge battle. Can you believe that? Amazing, isn't it?
DREIHDENSMURF (11-4821) (24-13-0,89) of U.B.O.S.M. TV challenged FILI LIU (2-
4968) (21-20-0,92) of RESURRECTION. Up 3. DREIHDENSMURF devastated FILI LIU in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge fight. And a bouquet of garlic for the blue guy. (Roses
are out of season.)
And for the Captaincy, although there was no column, there WAS a challenge.
OBSESSED AVENGER (15-2162) (41-40-1,253) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q challenged EMERALD
DRAGONFLY (60-2586) (64-59-2,235) of MAGICK. Down 18, unless it's just some dyslexic
trick. OBSESSED AVENGER was overpowered by EMERALD DRAGONFLY in a 1 minute Challenge
duel. And our salute to the Emerald Dragonfly. Write a column.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Steve McQueen -- I want a rematch. -- Talos
Drake -- Just trying to liven up the game. -- The Icelord
Obsessed Avenger -- We have a spot in the front ranks for you. -- The Icelord
#3 -- I can offer no prize. My warriors feel they have been gifted with immortality
by Lady Greywand and owe her and Ghea their blades in time of need. They feel their
honor demands it. Also, anytime one can stand in defiance of evil, one is rewarded.
Strong steel. -- The Icelord
Olaf -- I hope my petition has been received. No word so far. -- The Icelord
Not here, either.
All -- Okay, normally this would be the turn in which you receive a Semester In
Review. However, I've been making some changes to the programming of the compu-golem
I use to track this stuff. As a result, it won't be ready until next turn. In the
mean time...
Olaf, Ed., the Keeper of Lists or anyone else who can help -- I humbly request that
you to provide a listing of managers and alliances for here in the Guard. Thanks
oodles. -- Drake
Here you go. This is as of last turn. If I've gotten anyone's name or alliance

Let it be known far and wide, that the Warrior TUM 18-7380, the Champions Runner-Up
for the recent Tournament, is managed by none other than Shocking Toad. I named this
fabulous warrior after my friend and mentor, TUM, a.k.a. Don! Sorry TUM didn't get
me my first TC; however, a runner-up with all those sandbaggers is pretty impressive,
if I do say so myself. -- Shocking Toad, The Manager
13 November 2003
All -- This is to announce that I am no longer a member of the Vendetta Cartel
Alliance. I have enjoyed my time there, and I've made some great friends. Their
company will be missed, but they will endure. I wish them well. -- Apex
