In the Far West:
Ashon Chang studied the coastline. It was barely visible in the twilight, but
close enough that he could smell turned earth and mown hay. "We're taking a risk
anchoring here," he murmured. "Even if we're not seen from the land, I would expect
passing ships...."
"You have a better idea?" Werre growled.
Startled, the samurai glanced over his shoulder. He hadn't realized that anyone
was near enough to hear him. "No, I was talking to myself. Worrying out loud."
"Plenty to worry about," the Adantri agreed. "But it's a wasted effort.
Doesn't change anything. Know the risks and what could go wrong, know what your
options are in dealing with them, and then relax."
Ashon Chang glanced farther along the rail, to where Rughal was pacing and
looking about as relaxed as a tiger in a cage. "Easy to say, not so easy for some to
do...."
Werre followed his gaze and laughed. "Too bad there's no way to harness that
energy! The people who took Shania had better watch out--Rughal will be nearly
berserk by the time we get there."
"Assuming we can find her," the samurai said somberly. "We don't have much to
go on."
Werre laughed again. "We can use Rughal as a hunting dog, if we have to!" Then
he sobered, too. "If she's still alive, we'll find her. But I wish we knew more
about the people we'll be dealing with."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"These people are insane!" Shania muttered. She kept her head down for the
properly submissive appearance, but that didn't stop her from seeing and hearing
enough of what was going on around her. They were crossing a medium-sized plaza
overlooking the inner harbor. It was crowded with jostling merchants and sailors and
housewives shopping, petty nobles surrounded by their retinues of servants and
soldiers. A colorful crowd, and a noisy one, and a crowd that seemed unmoved by the
sacrifices being carried out on a raised platform to one side. "They're killing
children," she hissed. "Babies!"
Zakar, who had one hand locked around her wrist, pulling her forward steadily,
shrugged slightly. "They're desperate. And most of the babies wouldn't live to
their second birthday anyway. None will, if the Arcanum isn't stabilized. End of
the world as we know it. Besides, being sacrificed is an honor. Ask any of the
priests." He towed her into an alley behind the sacrificial platform, along the
narrow way at a fast trot that left her breathless, and out into another, smaller,
plaza.
"They're killing babies. It isn't--"
Zakar stopped, forcing her to look at him. "Fair? Is that what you were going
to say? LIFE isn't fair. We couldn't have saved any of those babies, woman. We'd
just have added our deaths to theirs--which might have amused the gods, but it
wouldn't have accomplished anything worth doing."
"But--"
"They tell me you're centuries old, elf woman. How did you last so long without
recognizing the facts? Life is HARD, woman. The universe is a cannibal. It brings
us to life, and then it eats us without a qualm. There is no such thing as 'fair' in
life."
"If you really believe that, why do anything at all? Why not just curl up and
die?"
"Because I won't give the universe, or the gods, or the priests, or ANYBODY the
satisfaction of seeing ME surrender. I am nobody's easy meat!" Apparently
considering the subject closed, he glanced up at the sky, gauging time by the stars.
"Almost dawn. We wouldn't get ten steps trying to leave the city before dawn, but
after it...we've got a chance."
"Good! The sooner I'm out of this city, the better I'll feel," Shania muttered.
Zakar laughed. "Me, too! I feel like a mouse trying to move inconspicuously
through a crowd of cats." He glanced around the plaza, which was nearly deserted,
and picked a doorway to darkness on the left, heading in that direction.
Once through the arch, the darkness was as complete as blindness. The air was
cold, uninhabited, and smelled faintly of old blood.
"We can wait for dawn here," Zakar said. "No one will disturb us. You said you
can contact your companions, if you have a place to be quiet and concentrate. This
is it. Tell 'em we're leaving the city on the west side and will move along the
shore till we meet them."
"I may be able to contact them," Shania corrected him. She reached out her free
hand, found a wall, and slid down to a sitting position. "I will try, but I make no
promises."

Various places in the Multiverse:
The Dwarf scowled across his desk, a slab of polished granite that would have
looked over-large in front of a giant. His chief wizards looked back at him calmly.
Their employer was a hard man, but he didn't penalize messengers for the bad news
they brought. Usually. "It's HER, isn't it? This it the kind of low, underhanded,
nasty action I'd expect from someone who's part Orc and part Elf. The two worst
races you could find! How bad is it?"
"She's found all the obvious gates," the wizard Skaefin said. "From the power
flux, I assume she plans to close them. This will cause more problems for her than
for us, but still..." his frown was almost as formidable as the Dwarf's. "It's a
matter of principle! We should strike back!"
"Could be dangerous, that," the sorceress Lilinith murmured. "Now that she's
terminating her Kaikwok project, she'll have the manpower to do...many violent
things. We don't NEED that kind of trouble. Sir."
"The real problem will be our manpower." The lizard mage Frilz's voice was dry,
as always, but there was a hint of genuine concern. "Those of our people who
immigrated here from Ghea may find themselves dragged back against their wills. It
could weaken our defense."
"She can retrieve the immigrants?" The Dwarf visibly shrugged off his anger to
concentrate on the immediate threat. "What are the parameters?"
"Not as bad as it might be," Skaefin said promptly. "My researches indicate
there's a time limit. I don't know what, exactly, that limit is--the flux between
dimensions makes it difficult to--"
"Don't make excuses," the Dwarf snapped. "I assume you did your best. What's
the approximate time limit?"
"Six months or so, I think." Skaefin glanced at his fellow wizards for
confirmation.
Both nodded.
"More or less," Frilz confirmed. "It depends on how much of her own power she
wants to expend. Those who came of their own choice and were properly integrated
will be resistant even if they haven't been here long. The ones who stumbled through
gates accidentally...." He spread his hands in the gesture that served his race for
a shrug.
"Loss of the involuntary immigrants won't be a problem," Lilinith agreed. "But
there is a chance, a good one I believe, that people who are closely associated with
them when they are, shall we say, retrieved may be hauled away with them."
"And because they came by chance, we don't know where they are," the Dwarf
finished, "or who they're with." He shrugged. "If that's all she can do, we'll be
fine. She needs us more than we need her. But she's got more than one trick up her
sleeve. The situation will have to be watched closely."
The Dwarf's fourth adviser, the giant Hadrubal, stirred finally. "We might send
a counter-force into HER universe," he rumbled.
"No." The Dwarf's voice was emphatic. "Right now, we're in the right. WE
aren't taking hostile actions, we're the DEFENDERS. That gives us a potent edge in
the forum of multiversal opinion. I won't risk that unless I can be sure that such a
stance would gain us much more. There will be no invasion from here. Not now,
anyway."
Scarlatti had expected them to go by ship to some other island, or to the
mainland of this world, whatever it was. But the lizard men were leading the way to
high ground, and from the arrangement of the trees and stones on that knoll, he
realized that the transportation was going to be magical. Teleportation, perhaps--he
had to remind himself that the instability that made teleportation on Ghea so
dangerous did not apply here. Wherever here was. Possibly a true Gate. Would that
mean that the home of the lizard folk was in a different world, just as Ghea was in a
different world from this one?
"If they can open this Gate," Carris Fallstar muttered, "they can open a Gate to
Ghea."
"It's easier to open a Gate that is already there," Fizban pointed out. "As
this one which will lead us to their home clearly is. The Gate to OUR home will have
to be found or created first. We must do this their way--their Gates first."
"That is the bargain we agreed to," Rogan added.
"I wasn't suggesting we break it," Carris snapped. "You humans are too damned
touchy about things like that--which shows your race's basic unreliability. I was
just making an observation."
The oldest of the lizard men, the one that might be a wizard, though his regalia
of bones and shells and odd bits of this and that seemed more like the gear of a
witchdoctor, gestured them forward. They took positions at his direction, along with
an equal number of lizard warriors.
The old lizard shook his rattle and whistled a call into the sky. Power rippled
around him. Around them. The world faded to gray.
Power rippled across the sea, turning blue water to steel gray and the clear sky
to a dome of white glass.
"Sorcery!" the ship's captain gasped. He made a sign to avert ill fortune.
A futile sign, Shylock knew. The power that gripped this ship, the power he
could feel all around him, was too great for such a simple preventive measure. There
was power enough here to turn the world inside out.
And that was what it was doing.
THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Captain of the Guard
Captain of the Guard again? Excellent! I had so much fun celebrating the last time.
Kaiden, it was a pleasure crossing swords with you...well, axe and spear technically,
but that doesn't sound as cool, you know. We seem to be pretty evenly matched.
Perhaps we'll match up again and fight the tie-breaker. Poison Ivy was busy mixing
potions for the Gate war and didn't get back in time to issue challenges for me.
Well, I've got to cut this short. All those hunky Lord Protectors are back from
defending the Gate and there's going to be a big party to celebrate. I've got to go
get my hair done and pull my fine jewelry (emeralds, of course) out of the safe
deposit box. A girl's got to look her best, you know. After all that fighting and
dying, I'm sure they'll appreciate the finer things in life...like dancing with me.
:-)

Captain of the Guard
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! RHYME TYME had cause to celebrate, after MOD
COD got 48 points by beating AVALANCHE. A certain someone should cut down on the
drinking and practice more, after losing 37 points to MOD COD. (Discrete enough,
AVALANCHE?) SUMTHING PAINFUL found out that HOME GUARD isn't a democracy. You've
gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! So who was the warrior seen charging into
immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic problem...
And how sociable are HOME GUARD's warriors? Come, let us see. Like a horde of
jackals fleeing from the lion, so did the "warriors" in HOME GUARD avoid FORCE OF
NATURE. As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q, so did
that sorry team shy from FORCE OF NATURE Is it charming personality? Conversational
abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, HALLIE O'DENE is the most challenged
warrior. Call 'im brash! Call 'im brassy! Call 'im brave! Call 'im sassy!
BUBBLES will face DIRT WORM, up by 26. Aaaah, just call 'im dead meat. It's not
whether you win or lose, but how many points you get (8). Right, BUBBLES? Word has
it MIME suffered a romantic setback. Note how he challenged HALLIE O'DENE, 28 points
his senior. Not to smear a reputation, but CIRQUE DU MASQUES must be a little
surprised, as HALLIE O'DENE blew it when facing MIME, 28 points below her. Take heed
HOME GUARD, of the unprincipled action of TUM. By challenging KOGITSUNE MARU, 19
points below him, TUM besmirches the noble art of dueling. TUM subdued KOGITSUNE
MARU. The whole thing leaves a bitter memory. As a confidence booster, FILI LIU
challenged LETHE, down 28 points. Do you also slay vicious rodents in your spare
time, FILI LIU? FILI LIU subdued LETHE with a point difference of 28. So this is
what HOME GUARD calls a duel. This will make an interesting tale. Place your bets!
SATOSHI KUNO is the long shot of the week: they challenged LYTA ALEXANDER, up by 45.
Fixed fights? Paybacks? Blind luck? Whatever, SATOSHI KUNO challenged LYTA
ALEXANDER, SATOSHI KUNO the underdog by 45 points.
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Questions are being
raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain tavern in
HOME GUARD would I avoid!
Do not think spyreporting in HOME GUARD is the highlight of my life. My fingers
tire and I fear my incessant prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable
character. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for HOME
GUARD? On that giddy note I take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Sultan -- I was an independent from '85-'95. In '96, High Lord Bosk and myself
organized an alliance that became The Council of Lords. I am still in The COL. Are
you a member of the VC? -- The Icelord, manager of Overlords
Threekard -- You're disgusting and despicable. Gambling is almost as bad as strong
drink, and when they go together, it is Much Worse. -- Carrie Nation
Dirt Worm -- How could you do that to me when I'm on an adventure? I fear the worst!
-- Hallie O'Dene
P.S. Good fight, though. I believe I need to work on the wind sprints.
Olaf -- (grim look) I will talk to YOU after the fights. In an alley. -- Hallie
O'Dene
Juggler -- (merry smile) But you should NOT try to juggle apples at the same time!
-- Delice the Red
P.S. I was NOT vicious and brutal! Olaf and the rest of the arena staff have it IN
for me.
Fountains of Wayne -- Peculiar, to be sure. Definitely peculiar. -- Lethe
P.S. The moon was basically somewhat yellowish, not blue. Do you suppose Olaf is
right?
Ground Pounder -- I give you the Curled Beak of Scorn. The Fleering Feather of
Something-For-Which-Mammals-Have-No-Name. Hah! -- Ski Mask, Founder and President of
Ducks with Swords and Supreme Duck of Alastari
P.S. Indeed, Olaf Modeen was correct. Your obsessive pounding of the ground,
probably due to your chagrin at not being winged, was a factor in your downfall. Of
course, my Duckly superiority was the MAIN factor, but the pounding did play a part.
W.T. Pooh -- Let us find our rural paradise together! -- Hallie O'Dene
Sultan -- Icelord and the Stormguards/Overlords are not in any way, shape, or form
associated with The Overlords of The Midnight Foundation. No disrespect intended
toward Icelord but other than a similarity in belief in role-play in Alastari (his
being still ongoing ours being stagnant as of late) our respective alliances are
spectrums apart. As a matter of fact, The Foundation has been flying solo with only
myself still flying the banner for almost a year now but will hopefully be at least
3-4 strong come the Summer Face in the South this year. Nice to know that Old Man
River still has a "soft" spot in his heart for the bastards that everyone loves to
hate. :) -- Jekyll; Anarchy, etc..../Overlord of The Midnight Foundation

ZalCon2 Updates (1/9/04)
The contest will be starting on the turn due February 23rd, 2004 and run for 20
turns.
Only one team will be allowed for each manager in the contest, regardless of
whether additional teams are announced as contest entries. No exceptions for any
reason.
The Style Master points should read that there is +1 point for beating a member
of your own style even if the warrior is not registered for the contest.
Rolling points for consecutive turns as Style Master means that your warrior
gets the extra point every turn after the first 3 that he continues to hold the
title.
The points for Quality Wins should be clarified to read the winning warrior is
ranked below by the number of recognition points needed for each bonus point at the
start of the fight. For example, Warrior A (3-2-0, 17) beats Warrior B (4-1-0, 35)
and receives 2 bonus points under Quality Win for the 18 point difference in the
ranking.
I believe that is all the clarifications for the moment, please feel free to
email, diplo, call or write me with any other questions or concerns about the
contest.
