                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Warriors and managers of Home Guard, I despair. This is not a criticism of you,
after all, you're here, you're fighting. But I am widely traveled within the
gladitorial system, nothing can happen in the arenas on the Isle without me getting
to hear of it. And what do I hear? Damned little, that's what. Most warriors who
still bother to fight--again, not a criticism, because after ten or fifteen years on
the Isle, fight every two weeks, you begin to wonder, "What's the point?" I can see
that. I've asked that question of myself more than once. Then The Old Bat usually
comes along and answers it in very clear terms, of course, but not everyone has that
little problem. Of those, as I say, who still fight, most of them choose to lose
themselves in the mob that is Talahya. Unless they've been forcibly Inducted into
Primus, another mob scene. Most of those who write personals are in Crysalis, I
suppose the slower pace gives them time to talk. And of the rest, it pains me to say
that most are in Free Blades. This is depressing. What does Debby Tonte have that I
don't have? Besides a really good tan.
You wonder what that was all about? Well, I figure if I'm going to despair in
public, it's a courtesy to tell you why. It is NOT a request to pick up the pace
here, or to suggest we brainstorm for some way to FORCE the pace to pick up. That's
beyond the ability of anybody here to effect. We're doomed.
You know, of course you do! Home Guard used to be for the gladiators who didn't
come out of the top drawer, or even the second drawer, but also didn't have a life
outside the arena. Sad, but there were--still are--lots of them. Very few of them
come here any more, though, they just retire and quietly go into hibernation in their
closets, that being the largest apartment they can afford here on the Isle. I note
in passing that we have to do something about the rent here! It's outrageous. Now,
it's all about Primus and the tourneys, and we scarcely get one gladiator in three
fighting here who could be classed as "an old dud." The only thing that gives those
old duds a chance to win now and then is massive experience and insane doggedness.
Unless we can throw out the young hotshots, which seems unlikely, but supposing we
could, and the managers then would care to expend their hard-earned cash on the said
old duds, things will just keep getting more so around here. We're doomed.
But, doomed or not, we're also going to have a spy report. And this is it.

There were no avoids, at all, issued in Home Guard this week. Brains frozen
here in the armpit of the year, mail service scrambled, or maybe... just forgot. If
I were coming to the Face to Face, which I'm not and you should be glad, because few
people want to meet ME face to face, I would chide you all for your remissness. As
it is, I shrug and reach for another bottle of, er, frostbite prophylactic.
Four challenges went through, but there were probably at least five issued,
because we have a most-challenged warrior. Kookaburra, who plans to open a fast food
joint as soon as the horses thaw. I don't know whether she plans to cook and serve
them, or use them for deliveries, and I don't want to know. Some mysteries are
better not revealed.
Ah, you wonder, four challenges out of what? Well, maybe you don't wonder, but
I'm going to tell you anyway. Twenty fights, five of them involving standbys, who
went one and four. Not one of their better days, but then, they aren't supposed to
have better days. Being a standby is not easy, you know. They have to either: learn
no skills in any fight, or not use any skills learned. They are absolutely forbidden
to either improve or get worse in their performance, and if you think that's easy,
forget it. It's a thankless job, and doesn't pay beans, but some days you have to
take the jobs that are available. I paid those dues, long ago, and I'm glad even for
this spy reporting job to avoid going back to standing-by.
I note in passing that none of the fights we're about to look at were packed
with action. Too cold, I suppose.

HEAD CHEESE (96-1920) (11-0-3,52) of WHY SELL THIS? fought LAKE SAILOR (101-2)
(0-0-0,30) of the Louts Local 101. HEAD CHEESE was viciously subdued by LAKE SAILOR
in a crowd pleasing 2 minute fray. They tell me (don't ask me who They are) that the
Lake Sailor was so vicious due to professional jealousy. He is renowned for his own
recipe for head cheese and doesn't like the competition. I wouldn't have thought
there was a big enough market to justify competition.
PORK ROLL (97-1634) (16-18-5,74) of KILLING ME SOFTER fought B&G BOUNCER (101-3)
(0-0-0,30) of the Louts Local 101. PORK ROLL overpowered B&G BOUNCER in a popular 1
minute gruesome one-sided duel. And if you think this was gruesome, just wait till
the Laughing Barmaid sees what inroads the Bouncer made on the stock! We might have
to call him the B&G Guzzler.
HARLEY THE CADAVER (18-5366) (20-34-3,70) of STREET PIZZA fought BRICK WALL (1-
7478) (35-38-0,52) of HOMICIDAL MANIACS. HARLEY THE CADAVER viciously subdued BRICK
WALL in a 3 minute competition. A conundrum. It is certain that Harley's actions
were vicious in motivation, but does it count if Brick didn't experience them as
such?
YOU'VE GOT SEATTLE (82-31563) (21-18-1,71) of IT'S THE SAME MOVIE! fought HERMY
(101-4) (0-0-0,50) of the Louts Local 101. YOU'VE GOT SEATTLE overpowered HERMY in a
popular 1 minute one-sided bout. Nermy assures me that SHE never wanted Seattle and
is not about to fight over it.
     SNIPPER (66-3518) (22-21-0,50) of WHIPPERSNAPPERS fought SCRAPPLE (97-1961) (8-
3-3,19) of WHY SELL THIS?. SNIPPER devastated SCRAPPLE in an exciting 1 minute
brutal one-sided brawl. Yes, I agree. Adding syrup to the scrapple, while exciting,
is... unkind. In a word, brutal. A dubious taste combination. With cheese, now, it
isn't all that bad.

MOUNTAIN GOAT (56-3700) (44-59-3,61) of REDHORSE fought BLOOD PIE (96-1918) (9-
2-5,38) of WHY SELL THIS?. MOUNTAIN GOAT bested BLOOD PIE in an exciting 1 minute
bloody uneven duel. What was really exciting was seeing Mountain Goat EAT the stuff.
I tell you, I didn't think he'd manage, but he choked down every last bite.
BROKEN TOE (56-3683) (43-64-1,96) of REDHORSE fought PINE LEAF (24-4580) (30-42-
0,52) of KRILL CAVALRY. BROKEN TOE defeated PINE LEAF in a popular 1 minute duel. I
could make a lot of jokes about Broken's foot problems, but today... nah, I just
don't feel like it. After all, he isn't going to read this and get upset, so why
bother? As well make jokes about the moon.
REDDI WHIP (97-1636) (19-15-7,92) of KILLING ME SOFTER fought LORETTA (101-8)
(0-0-0,110) of the Louts Local 101. REDDI WHIP beat LORETTA in a crowd pleasing 3
minute conflict. Ah, always too ready for the butter, the cream, the rivers of
honey, Loretta. A full-figured woman, as they say.
LINI DAWNWIND (11-5865) (26-28-1,105) of KRILL CAVALRY fought FAT BACK (96-1610)
(18-16-4,92) of KILLING ME SOFTLY. LINI DAWNWIND bested FAT BACK in an exciting 1
minute bloody battle. Grilling, that's her technique, and it was... exciting hardly
cover is it, when the fat dripped down onto the coals and the flames roared up and
several of the overhead banners caught fire. Ah! I do like to watch things burn, I
must confess.
REDEMPTION (4-4868) (48-33-2,172) of BLADES OF MIST fought MOOSE (56-3459) (34-
46-0,145) of REDHORSE. REDEMPTION was demolished by MOOSE in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched match. This moose... when is the open season on meese? He can be
a bit of a bore, lumbering here, blundering there, and eating constantly. It takes a
lot of eating to support a body that big, after all.

HALLIE O'DENE (58-6018) (78-102-0,178) of CIRQUE DU MASQUES fought FAST-FINGERS
FRED (101-7) (0-0-0,110) of the Louts Local 101. HALLIE O'DENE overcame FAST-FINGERS
FRED in a popular 3 minute bout. I fell that in actually cutting off his fast
fingers, she was being... extreme, but she was fast about it herself and no one got a
chance to stop her. And one of the orderlies glued them back on.
     HUMMINGBIRD (56-3475) (42-50-0,156) of REDHORSE fought AEDON (7-4295) (50-47-
1,161) of BLADES OF ICE. HUMMINGBIRD was unbelievably bested by AEDON in a popular 3
minute brutal fight. I find this totally believable, actually. What is there to
cause amaze?
BUCK (1-2291) (58-118-0,154) of MOSSRUNNERS fought HELM HAMMERHAND (31-5025)
(39-28-0,153) of LORDS OF VALHALLA. BUCK was viciously subdued by HELM HAMMERHAND in
a popular 3 minute gruesome duel. They tell me that Buck wears long-johns under his
armor at this time of year; probably the unaccustomed layers were, ah, binding and
confining. Buck, obviously, is one of those old duds of whom I spoke earlier.
     FEALOST (1-3916) (61-86-1,202) of MOSSRUNNERS fought KONGOL (7-4524) (48-45-
2,168) of BLADES OF ICE. FEALOST easily killed KONGOL in a 1 minute uneven melee.
Who can guess what moved Fealost in this uncharacteristically decisive moment?
Unless it was a mere fluke, a case of Kongol "ducking into a blow," as they say?
MOD COD (55-2638) (86-109-3,205) of RHYME TYME fought CROOKED HOOF (56-3493)
(49-38-0,207) of REDHORSE. MOD COD overpowered CROOKED HOOF in a popular 1 minute
mismatched brawl. Stupid Hoff, stupid fish, both boring, bah.

     The challenges:
MISCHIEVOUS IMP (1-7627) (27-12-3,100) of SWEORDMASTERS challenged GAR & BRILL
(38-4252) (50-72-0,135) of JUST BECAUSE. Up 35. MISCHIEVOUS IMP was devastated by
GAR & BRILL in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Oooh, was the Imp brilled, or
what? The fire, by the way, was... glorious. I hadn't realized that imps burned so
well.
HEBEE (38-4359) (25-21-0,109) of ALL FINESSE challenged DRANDUS DE'VIR (71-4909)
(25-15-0,136) of REALMS TUFTS. Up 27. HEBEE overpowered DRANDUS DE'VIR in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge duel. Obviously a closely-calculated challenge here.
Someone is paying attention and doing their managerial job to perfection.
CEER (96-1537) (17-17-4,155) of THE BLOODGUARD 2 challenged CAT IN THE HAT (24-
3103) (37-15-1,186) of THE SEUSS HEUSS. Up 31. CEER was vanquished by CAT IN THE
HAT in an exciting 1 minute uneven Challenge battle. It's the hat. Very mystical
things, hats. Many people know this.
     HELLACIOUS (1-7541) (31-8-1,210) of MANNEQUIN'S BEST challenged KOOKABURRA (33-
4151) (76-106-4,212) of GIRL SCOUT COOKIES. Up 2, to the Most Challenged Warrior.
HELLACIOUS was devastated by KOOKABURRA in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight.
Rumor has it that Hellacious will be washing dishes in Kook's fast food joint.

And for the title: TENACIOUS (7-5337) (50-22-1,208) of BATHTUB ARMADA fought
BECKY (17-5782) (35-21-4,198) of BLADES OF STEEL. TENACIOUS was viciously subdued by
BECKY in a popular 3 minute bloody Title duel. A fine job, Becky, and our
congratulations.

Hummingbird -- That was a lame fight. I won't get into who you bribed to encorcer me
to stand there. -- Drandus

Ceer -- You know, if you spell your name the other way 'round, it sounds more like a
name. But maybe that's only because I once knew a guy named Reece. (Hey, when you
have two Ees, it doesn't take them long to produce a third!) Good try. -- Hallie
O'Dene

Moose -- I didn't have a weapon heavy enough to take down a darned moose. -- Lini
Dawnwind
P.S. I should have used... land mines, I think
P.P.S. Besides, who could eat a whole moose?

You could throw a party with a barbecued moose.

Adam's Apple -- It seems odd that you're a golem, but then, life is often odd.
That's probably why we get out of bed each morning, to see what happens next. -- Pine
Leaf

You've Got Seattle -- And you can keep it. -- Snipper

Fat Back -- No two ways about it, the Wall doesn't do "moving parts," and that's the
only use it can "imagine" for grease. (shrug) So goes it. -- Hallie O'Dene, for the
Brick Wall
