Reflections by the Captain of the Guard
I'm the Duelmaster???
Well, imagine that! It's about time. I've been trying to line up a title shot for
some time; my challenges never seem to go through though because I KNOW you are all
scared to death of me. One of these days I'm going to train my massive intellect to
7 (from my current 5) and then you will all be sorry you ever met me.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
And here we are, another fortnight, another spy report for Home Guard. Many
people did not turn out for the fights today, and who can blame them? It's colder
than-- an, it's very cold out. Must have something to do with it being winter, hmm?
Because it DEFINITELY is. And then there's the recent tourney. Some of the
gladiators who would be appearing here, who WILL be appearing here, I hope and
expect, are probably still on their way home. For those who call the Isle "home,"
anyway. Well, okay, others may be on their way to other homes, but, obviously, they
won't be fighting HERE in the near future. Ah... maybe I'd better drop that line of,
um, whatever it is, as it appears to be getting remarkably tangled.
So, with strict regard to today's gladiation, The Stormguards were avoided by
Royal Flush. Nobody was Most Challenged.
We had twenty-two fights, involving only a single standby, which is good. And
only two challenges among them, which is, let's call it "disappointing." I like to
see the managers and gladiators of Home Guard making full use of the tools available
to them, and somebody, several somebodies, is slacking off. Pull up your socks and
get busy challenging and avoiding!
Also, our longest fight was only nine minutes. This is respectable, but no
more. It isn't remarkable. Let's go for remarkable.
Without further ado, because I can't think of any more ado at the moment:
HUW AP HUW (35-3030) (20-44-0,48) of CHILDREN OF LLYR fought CAFFREY'S (21-4748)
(11-2-1,36) of REAL BEER. HUW AP HUW was demolished by CAFFREY'S in an action packed
1 minute uneven bout. No surprise here. Some people shouldn't drink. It looks like
Huw is one of them. Well, I suppose he could drink... water? Or milk. Maybe tea.
JOHN WAYNE HAMMER (42-4213) (18-27-2,53) of KLK RANGE HAMMERZ fought PRIVATE
ROOM (31-3620) (17-11-0,62) of MILITARY MAYHEM. JOHN WAYNE HAMMER was overpowered by
PRIVATE ROOM in a 1 minute uneven fight. And who was IN the private room, that's
what I want to know.
VANISH (73-4633) (21-7-1,90) of THE INANIMATES fought RUBBER KNIFE (57-2546)
(14-6-1,49) of USELESS TOOLS. VANISH was overcome by RUBBER KNIFE in a crowd
pleasing 3 minute competition. This has got to be embarrassing for Vanish. Maybe
he/she/it should try some animation next time. Oh, and while I'm thinking of it, how
does a rubber knife compare to a rubber hose for this kind of thing?
BLOODY BRAINLESS (96-2206) (13-14-3,72) of BLOODY RANDOMNESS fought LAND OF
FLUSH (11-4373) (9-11-0,38) of CONSORTIUM CRAP. BLOODY BRAINLESS was overpowered by
LAND OF FLUSH in a 1 minute one-sided match. Talk about your peculiar upset
victories, this one's got to be on the list.
JAMES MADISON (99-1268) (11-6-3,68) of DEAD PRESIDENTS, YO fought AIM SEDUCE
HAMMER (17-6815) (23-7-1,56) of AIM 4 ISLE HAMMERZ. JAMES MADISON overpowered AIM
SEDUCE HAMMER in a 1 minute one-sided match. Why, James! I didn't think you were
that kind of guy! Whatever will Dolly say?
MISCHIEVOUS IMP (1-7627) (33-19-3,95) of SWEORDMASTERS fought TOTTI (17-5991)
(12-4-2,42) of ITALIAN FOOTBALL. MISCHIEVOUS IMP slimly won victory over TOTTI in a
popular 5 minute brawl. You know how it is, imps are always throwing balls around.
I was going to mention their penchant for kicking, but one of the censors informed me
that this would be an indelicate reference. Bah. Are we all sissies? Besides me,
slave to a paycheck that I am.
CUBA (26-3917) (25-10-0,103) of HERE TO PHOENIX fought GIGLIE (25-5130) (35-9-
0,125) of MADTOWN. CUBA was unbelievably bested by GIGLIE in an exciting 4 minute
bloody fray. What's unbelievable about this? Did the arena scribe know something
that is hidden from us?
MATH OP OWAIN (35-1418) (38-79-1,138) of CHILDREN OF LLYR fought SUGARBEET (7-
5219) (32-34-1,94) of SUGAR AND SPICE. MATH OP OWAIN lost to SUGARBEET in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute bout. The comments anent this fight should be interesting. Tune
in next time.
BASE ON BULLS (73-3101) (25-8-4,147) of THE BULLS fought TAVIS CADFALSON (35-
1419) (32-85-2,111) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. BASE ON BULLS overcame TAVIS CADFALSON in a
popular 2 minute conflict. I thought for a minute there that the announcer was
calling for a Bison Bull, he's got a strange accent. I don't suppose a bison bull
could have done much more damage.
DEACON BLUE (79-945) (27-24-0,161) of CHAPEL ROCK fought FAST-FINGERS FRED (101-
7) (0-0-0,110) of the College of Mimes. DEACON BLUE savagely defeated FAST-FINGERS
FRED in a crowd pleasing 2 minute match. Today's one and only fighting standby,
ignominiously defeated. The other standbys will have some things to say to Fred
about this.
FANNY BELT (28-1804) (43-26-1,180) of OTTO'S MECHANICS fought OWAIN HARLSON (35-
3130) (25-32-1,131) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. FANNY BELT devastated OWAIN HARLSON in a 1
minute mismatched conflict. It was that swish of the derriere that did it.
UNZOE THE SHAMAN (31-4940) (28-12-0,161) of THE STORMGUARDS fought CADAL (35-
1370) (42-85-4,141) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. UNZOE THE SHAMAN overpowered CADAL in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. How can this be exciting? Were you excited? The
bookies weren't, they predicted it.
GAR & BRILL (38-4252) (61-88-0,161) of JUST BECAUSE fought SCRAPPLE (97-1961)
(21-17-3,142) of WHY SELL THIS? GAR & BRILL was overpowered by SCRAPPLE in a 1
minute uneven match. Good. Setting aside all questions of the edibility of
scrapple, it was time somebody cleaned that Brill. Not to mention the Gar. It's
been a health hazard here for too long.
DON KING (47-5374) (23-19-2,174) of ROYAL FLUSH fought HARLEY THE CADAVER (18-
5366) (29-52-3,104) of STREET PIZZA. DON KING lost to HARLEY THE CADAVER in a
popular 3 minute duel. I always like to see a dead man win, and from such an
underdog position it is doubly sweet.
PERFECT TEN (47-4218) (33-28-1,180) of ROYAL FLUSH fought PUMPING ON STEELE (82-
33221) (18-17-0,123) of NO RESPECT II. PERFECT TEN viciously subdued PUMPING ON
STEELE in an action packed 3 minute gory duel. No pumping today. Good. The water's
all frozen anyway. Ah, you don't mean pumping water, do you? Oh, well.
APPLE JACK (47-4011) (36-29-4,174) of ROYAL FLUSH fought HEBEE (38-4359) (28-38-
0,118) of ALL FINESSE. APPLE JACK overpowered HEBEE in a 1 minute uneven melee. Let
me see if I've got this straight here. Hebe, I mean, Hebee, is a cup-bearer, yes?
And Apple Jack is a liquid put in cups, right? Are we looking at "overpowered" in
the sense of, Hebee tried to carry a whole tun, or did the silly fool just try to
DRINK a whole tun? Inquiring minds are mildly interested.
STEVE MCQUEEN (47-3908) (46-41-1,207) of ROYAL FLUSH fought HEAD CHEESE (96-
1920) (25-13-3,162) of WHY SELL THIS?. STEVE MCQUEEN overpowered HEAD CHEESE in a
crowd pleasing 9 minute one-sided struggle. Our longest fight, but please, I do NOT
want to know what it was that Steve spent so long doing with the big Cheese.
STREET RAT (11-3116) (37-32-2,192) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS fought BLOOD PIE (96-
1918) (19-19-5,158) of WHY SELL THIS? STREET RAT savagely defeated BLOOD PIE in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute competition. They tell me rats can eat just about anything.
Even more than goats, which I understand from a usually reliable source do NOT eat
tin cans. Too bad, I was looking at them as a recycling miracle. Oh, well.
CAT IN THE HAT (24-3103) (57-22-1,190) of THE SEUSS HEUSS fought ACE METRIC (47-
3554) (24-15-0,174) of ROYAL FLUSH. CAT IN THE HAT devastated ACE METRIC in a 1
minute one-sided fight. It was a classic combat between rhyming unreason and stern
logic, and you see which won. This is a clue.
The challenges, both of 'em:
HUNZICKER BOWL (23-4182) (37-20-1,117) of SKI TAOS challenged THE SINGING BANDIT
(11-6349) (30-36-0,119) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS. Up 2. HUNZICKER BOWL vanquished THE
SINGING BANDIT in a 1 minute uneven Challenge battle. What was the Hunzicker doing
with that rather large and heavy ball? I didn't think we did "bowling" here.
BULL DURHAM (5-4324) (30-15-1,160) of PARTY ANIMALS challenged BLACK EYES (46-
2820) (28-21-0,167) of THE FURIOUS FIVE. Up 7. BULL DURHAM devastated BLACK EYES in
a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. You thought Black Eyes was furious BEFORE the
fight, it's nothing to the current situation.
For the title: TENACIOUS (7-5337) (60-32-1,208) of BATHTUB ARMADA fought MOD
COD (55-2638) (97-125-3,205) of RHYME TYME. TENACIOUS luckily beat MOD COD in a
crowd pleasing 2 minute Title duel. A triumph of a glass quarterstaff over antique
