WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Report from the Tourney #1 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
Larkin here, with a report from the Winter Tourney. Okay, maybe this isn't
Atlantis, but it's somewhere warm, and if that isn't a beach, at least it's sand,
and, as advertised, there are drinks with umbrellas in them. And young women with a
lot of suntan showing. By the time you read this, the tourney will be over, but
while I'm writing it, the tourney is NOT over. And a lot of you guys reading this
won't have been able to go, anyway.
I'm interviewing Zalgor Prigg, one of the managers participating in the Old
Valamantis Bloodgames, and let me tell you, Old Valamantis is not a place you want to
hang around if you don't have to. It's rotten with magic, to begin with--Folstrom
magic, the blackest there is--and then it's got all this blood and violence on top of
it, and it makes for a dark and scary venue. Anything might rise out of the ruins
around the arena, summoned by the blood and the curses of the managers.
"Mr. Prigg, could you tell us why you--"
"It was the play on words," the manager said, overriding the question. "I
couldn't resist--the chance to call a Bloodgames team Phoenix, you know, the 'rising
from the ashes of death' business. Of course, then I had to change it to Phonetix,
but that's okay, keep people guessing."
"I've heard the Commission mages talking about that name, sir, and they seem
alarmed. One of them said the name was practically a spell in itself, used here."
"I heard. That's why I had to change it."
"Have you considered what might actually rise from the ashes and blood here as a
result?"
"Well, no, but that isn't my business, you know. I manage gladiators. Let the
mages worry about what pops in from some other dimension. Besides, what if nothing
happens?"
"But, sir, there have already been reports of zombie rats and tentacled monsters
lurking in the backs of the locker rooms! And someone is bound to consider that you
have a partial responsibility--"
"No," Prigg said, "I have no responsibility for that kind of thing. I'm no
magician, I haven't been reading forbidden tomes...." He paused, looking thoughtful.
"Maybe it was TigToad with his Obscure Lore...."
"I don't believe there's a team of that name in this Bloodgames--"
"No, not here. Earlier, in Veastian. He could have been, hmm, preparing for
this, opening contacts if not gates, stuff like that. Has anybody seen any Dark
Toads around?"
"Not until they've had six drinks with umbrellas in them. Tell me, sir, have
you given any thought to the moral implications of the Bloodgames?"
"What moral implications?" the manager asked. "This isn't about morals, it's
about survival. And the way to survive on the sands is to kill your opponents every
chance you get!"
"Yes, but--"
"There's a reason they don't hold these contests up in Andoria," the manager
said sternly. "Good people in their ways, the Andorians, but they just aren't cut
out for this kind of grim business." He paused to listen to the roar of the crowds
jamming the ancient arena. Checked the marquee where slaves dangled from ropes and
updated the records of participants. Nodded, grimly satisfied. "Another death.
That's good--can't have too many survivors, or it cheapens the victory at the end."
"But the death toll--"
"Bah! Don't get the idea that these gladiators are the flower of Alastarian
youth. The ones who enter the Bloodgames are the men with no hope. We offer them a
future they could never have dreamed of, but they have to work for it, sweat for it,
bleed for it, and sometimes die for it. The survivors..." he bared his teeth in a
grin that would not have looked out of place on a wolf, "they owe us EVERYTHING, and
they'll do anything to repay us."
"But--"
"And besides," Zalgor Prigg went on, "if you really want to take up the moral
question, go talk to the Grey Wand. She's the one set this up, after all."
"I don't see the point, frankly. She's got plenty of Lord Protectors, and they
have longer training, skills polished and honed to a--"
"The Bloodgames victors, they're Her enforcers," Prigg said. "No polish, sure,
but when a dirty job needs doing, one of these guys will do it, and no questions
asked."
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
And here we are, everyone straggling in after the tourney... maybe not everyone,
but people are returning, anyway. It was a quiet day here. Nineteen fights, which
is more than Darkholm had. Seven standbys on the sands. No challenges, no avoids--
too bad. I expect to see a lot of those come next turn. Corrupt Turnkey increased
the most in rank, going up 38 points. Heart Breaker lost the most points, 28 of 'em.
Does anybody know of an occassion where the biggest point gain and the biggest point
loss did NOT come out of the same fight? I'm fairly sure there have been some, but
they aren't prominent in my memory.
WEE MAN (19-5071) (19-22-0,65) of CUNNING RUNTS fought KEEL HAULER (9-5389) (20-
3-0,87) of SEA DOGS. WEE MAN defeated KEEL HAULER in a crowd pleasing 4 minute
conflict. Embarrassing for the Keel guy.
SURLY DECKHAND (21-6568) (27-32-1,46) of SEA DOGS fought MEAN SPIRIT (101-5) (0-
0-0,70) of Random Bods. SURLY DECKHAND subdued MEAN SPIRIT in an exciting 1 minute
brutal bout. A well-matched pair, so far as personality goes.
SALTY (21-6607) (24-24-1,37) of SEA DOGS fought HERMY (101-4) (0-0-0,50) of
Random Bods. SALTY was devastated by HERMY in a popular 3 minute brutal mismatched
brawl. Ah, we may be looking at a problem when we have a standby winning. They get
above themselves. They put on airs. They begin to make demands.
GUT BUSTER (26-4750) (25-19-1,80) of ULTRA-VIOLENT fought SEA LEGS (9-5387) (21-
15-2,46) of SEA DOGS. GUT BUSTER slimly won victory over SEA LEGS in a 2 minute
brutal fray. Slimly? What were you doing out there, Gut? You should've won in a
whoosh.
PHANTASMAL (84-10204) (9-0-0,27) of SISTERHOOD fought HEMPEN JIG (9-5388) (21-
17-1,37) of SEA DOGS. PHANTASMAL won victory over HEMPEN JIG in a crowd pleasing 1
minute bout. Better than dying by the Sailor, though.
GOB (51-5436) (16-12-1,61) of SEA DOGS fought MEAN SPIRIT (101-5) (0-0-0,70) of
Random Bods. GOB savagely defeated MEAN SPIRIT in a crowd pleasing 1 minute gory
conflict. Mean Spirit is just out of luck today.
REEKY SNEAK (42-4491) (17-5-0,54) of DUNGEON CELL fought LAKE SAILOR (101-2) (0-
0-0,30) of Random Bods. REEKY SNEAK handily defeated LAKE SAILOR in an exciting 1
minute one-sided contest. You wouldn't think a Lake Sailor would do the "delicate
sensibility" thing, but ours does.
CHATTY CABALIST (42-4488) (24-11-2,57) of DUNGEON CELL fought MEAN SPIRIT (101-
5) (0-0-0,70) of Random Bods. CHATTY CABALIST was overpowered by MEAN SPIRIT in a 1
minute one-sided match. Aha, Mean Spirit getting his own back. He's like that.
MODEL PRISONER (42-4489) (21-5-2,125) of DUNGEON CELL fought LORETTA (101-8) (0-
0-0,110) of Random Bods. MODEL PRISONER was beaten by LORETTA in a 1 minute gory
melee. Third win for the standbys, and Loretta was seen to sneer about "people who
model striped overalls." That's Loretta for you, always has something nice to say
about her opponents.
BALLAST (1-7727) (46-53-0,141) of SEA DOGS fought NO CHASER (33-6490) (32-23-
0,141) of JOYS OF BOOZE. BALLAST unbelievably bested NO CHASER in a popular 4 minute
gory duel. And immediately demanded a chaser.
SPARE ANCHOR (18-9610) (29-18-1,105) of SEA DOGS fought HUW AP HUW (35-3030)
(31-85-1,125) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. SPARE ANCHOR unbelievably bested HUW AP HUW in a
popular 7 minute duel. "Unbelievable" is right on this one! Huw has been such a
dedicated loser, we won't know what to make of him if he starts winning.
JETSAM (1-8172) (25-33-1,126) of SEA DOGS fought KNEE BREAKER (26-4770) (21-15-
0,98) of ULTRA-VIOLENT. JETSAM overcame KNEE BREAKER in an action packed 4 minute
melee. This is what they call "dues," Knee.
PRISONER BG11 (99-1620) (18-24-4,129) of DUNGEON CELL 508C fought NINJA FERD
(101-30) (0-0-0,130) of Random Bods. PRISONER BG11 was overcome by NINJA FERD in a 4
minute fight. And another standby win! Take a tip from me, and stay out of the main
bars tonight, guys. The standbys are going to be howling.
HEART BREAKER (26-4752) (27-18-1,168) of ULTRA-VIOLENT fought CORRUPT TURNKEY
(42-4487) (22-6-3,125) of DUNGEON CELL. HEART BREAKER was overpowered by CORRUPT
TURNKEY in a 1 minute one-sided struggle. CT left the little lady in tears, which is
the way she usually leaves her dates. Serves her right.
MATH OP OWAIN (35-1418) (61-108-1,176) of CHILDREN OF LLYR fought FLESH FLAYER
(26-4751) (28-14-1,112) of ULTRA-VIOLENT. MATH OP OWAIN bested FLESH FLAYER in an
action packed 1 minute brawl. This may be a good omen for Math's adventure, but it's
not a surprise for us, given the difference in their records.
GAR & BRILL (38-4252) (75-126-1,156) of JUST BECAUSE fought OWAIN HARLSON (35-
3130) (43-66-1,154) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. GAR & BRILL was defeated by OWAIN HARLSON
in an exciting 1 minute fight. Will Owain crow about this next time? Probably.
PRISONER 0103 (82-33733) (49-66-0,208) of DUNGEON CELL 21 fought BUDDERCUP (60-
5967) (45-41-0,185) of BUMS 'R' US. PRISONER 0103 was savagely defeated by BUDDERCUP
in a crowd pleasing 8 minute duel. I guess it takes a golem to withstand eight
minutes of savagery.
POOP DECK GUY (1-8274) (27-12-2,182) of SEA DOGS fought DIVING HAWK (3-2665)
(40-59-0,166) of WE BIG WOHPUM. POOP DECK GUY vanquished DIVING HAWK in an exciting
1 minute uneven battle. Remember to pull out of that dive before you hit the deck--
or the deck hits you, Hawk.
For the title:
MAKESHIFT ANCHOR (1-7724) (51-50-0,284) of SEA DOGS fought TAVIS CADFALSON (35-
1419) (50-119-3,181) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. MAKESHIFT ANCHOR bested TAVIS CADFALSON in
a crowd pleasing 3 minute Title fight. Probably just as well. Congratulations to
Makeshift Anchor, and also congratulations to Tavis for hanging on into the third
minute.
